Our purpose is serving Christ and transforming lives through welcome, worship and encounter.

The Church of which we are members is not defined by the walls of a building but by the Body of Christ of which we are members. In making our communion spiritually, we are joining with Christians everywhere to be nourished by the one who tells us, ‘I am the Bread of Life’. ❖ The flowers this week have been given by Alex McLelland in loving memory of Vera. ❖ The Cathedral Choir leads this morning’s worship. The choral setting is Missa Brevis by Neil Cox (b1955).

Prayers of Penitence God’s whole creation groans.

The land produces thorns and thistles and longs to be set free.

Our sin affects all around us.

We confess our sins in penitence and faith.

You delight in creation, its colour and diversity; yet we have misused the earth and plundered its resources for our own selfish ends.

Lord, have mercy.

You have brought order out of chaos, light in darkness, good out of evil, but we have preferred darkness in words and deeds which dishonour God’s holy name.

Christ, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy You have showered us with blessings, but we have been grudging towards others and lacking in generosity in word and deed.

Silence May God who loved the world so much that he sent his Son to be our Saviour forgive you your sins and make you holy to serve him in the world, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon.

They shall see the glory of the Lord, the majesty of our God. 3

As he walked along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2His disciples asked him, ‘Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?’ 3Jesus answered, ‘Neither this man nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that God’s works might be revealed in him. 4We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming when no one can work. 5As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.’ 6When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva and spread the mud on the man’s eyes, 7saying to him, ‘Go, wash in the pool of Siloam’ (which means Sent). Then he went and washed and came back able to see. 8The neighbours and those who had seen him before as a beggar began to ask, ‘Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?’ 9Some were saying, ‘It is he.’

Others were saying, ‘No, but it is someone like him.’ He kept saying, ‘I am the man.’

The Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. cf 1 Corinthians 15.3-7

Commissioning of Stewards All stewards stand Canon Law states that it shall be the duty of stewards (appointed by the Annual Parochial Church Meeting) to promote the cause of true religion in the parish and to assist the Churchwardens in the discharge of their duties in maintaining order and decency in the church, especially during the time of divine service.

The Acting Dean addresses the stewards Will you strive to welcome all who enter this Cathedral Church as if you were welcoming Christ himself?

With the help of God, I will.

Will you proclaim to them, by your words and example, the good news of God in Christ?

With the help of God, I will.

Will you work collaboratively with the Clergy and Churchwardens to maintain order and so enable others to participate freely in worship?

With the help of God, I will.

God give you grace to serve him with dedication, cheerfulness and humility, and to support the Churchwardens with true loyalty, and may God`s all-powerful Spirit direct your paths throughout the coming year, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hymn There’s a wideness in God’s mercy like the wideness of the sea; there’s a kindness in his justice which is more than liberty.

There is no place where earth’s sorrows are more felt than up in heaven; there is no place where earth’s failings have such kindly judgement given.

For the love of God is broader than the measures of man’s mind; and the heart of the Eternal is most wonderfully kind.

But we make his love too narrow by false limits of our own; and we magnify his strictness with a zeal he will not own.

There is plentiful redemption in the blood that has been shed; there is joy for all the members in the sorrows of the Head.

There is grace enough for thousands of new worlds as great at this; there is room for fresh creations in that upper home of bliss.

If our love were but more simple, we should take him at his word; and our lives would be all gladness in the joy of Christ our Lord.

Great Thanksgiving Prayer The Lord is here.

His Spirit is with us.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise.

It is indeed right, it is our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. For you have created the heavens and the earth, and formed us in your own image.

In the fullness of time you sent forth your Son, your eternal Word, who laid down his life for our salvation and rose from the grave, the first-fruits of your new creation.

You send forth your holy and life-giving Spirit to give life to our mortal bodies and to renew the face of the earth.

Therefore with all the heavenly hosts, we give voice to everything that you have made, and sing the eternal hymn of praise: Choir

As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you.

Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever.
