Voluntary

Herzlich tut mich erfreuen – Johannes Brahms Op. 122 No. 4

Welcome The Reverend Canon Philip Gray, Assistant Precentor We stand. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Hymn Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation; O my soul, praise him, for he is thy health and salvation: all ye who hear, now to his temple draw near, joining in glad adoration. Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things so wondrously reigneth, shieldeth thee gently from harm, or when fainting sustaineth: hast thou not seen how thy heart’s wishes have been granted in what he ordaineth? Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee; surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend thee: ponder anew what the Almighty can do, if to the end he befriend thee. Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him! All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before him! Let the Amen sound from his people again: gladly for aye we adore him! Joachim Neander (1650-1680), tr. Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878) LOBE DEN HERRN, CP 558

The Greeting The Lord be with you and also with you. We remain standing.

Prayers of Penitence We run the race set before us, surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. Therefore let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which clings so closely, bringing them to Jesus in penitence and faith. cf. Hebrews 12.1

Silence You were sent to preach the good news of light in the darkness of the world: Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. You were sent to plant in our hearts the seed of eternal life: Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. You were sent to reconcile us to yourself by the shedding of your blood: Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. May almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you your sins, and bring you to everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We remain standing as the choir sings

Gloria Choir

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Collect The president introduces a period of silent prayer. Almighty and eternal God, who, for the firmer foundation of our faith, allowed your holy apostle Thomas to doubt the resurrection of your Son till word and sight convinced him: grant to us, who have not seen, that we also may believe and so confess Christ as our Lord and our God; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. We sit.

First Reading

Ephesians 2.19-end

read by Susan Ibnouzaki

You are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, 20built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. 21In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; 22in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling-place for God. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence

Gospel Acclamation We stand.

Choir

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Choir

I do not call you servants but friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. cf. John 15.15

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel Reading

John 20.24-29

read by the Reverend Canon Mandy Coutts, Canon for Mission and Pastoral Development

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him, ‘We have seen the Lord.’ But he said to them, ‘Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.’ 26

A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ 27Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.’ 28Thomas answered him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ 29Jesus said to him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon

After an opening prayer, we sit. The Reverend Canon Paul Maybury, Canon Precentor

Anthem For the beauty of the earth, for the beauty of the skies, for the love which from our birth over and around us lies, Lord of all, to thee we raise this our joyful hymn of praise. For the beauty of each hour of the day and of the night, hill and vale and tree and flower, sun and moon and stars of light, Lord of all, to thee we raise this our joyful hymn of praise. For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, friends on earth and friends above, for all gentle thoughts and mild, Lord of all, to thee we raise this our joyful hymn of praise.

6

For each perfect gift of thine, to our race so freely given, graces human and divine, flowers of earth and buds of heaven, Lord of all, to thee we raise this our joyful hymn of praise. John Rutter (b. 1945)

We stand.

The Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. We kneel or sit.

Prayers of Intercession

led by Mary Fisher

Encouraged by our fellowship with all the saints, let us make our prayers to the Father through our Lord Jesus Christ. After each section this, or another, response is used: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. At the end: Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. We stand. 7

Giving and Receiving Peace We are fellow-citizens with the saints and of the household of God, through Christ our Lord, who came and preached peace to those who were far off and those who were near. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. We offer one another a sign of peace, and offer our gifts to God. The Table is set with bread and wine.

Hymn Blessed Thomas, doubt no longer, see the wounds in hand and side; now behold the risen Saviour who for thee has bled and died, and from death’s dark pit arising, lives in body glorified. Here behold the love victorious, over death triumphant now, see the feet where nails were driven, and thy faith in him avow: for he lives, the world’s redeemer, unto whom all knees shall bow. Thomas looked upon the Master: was it then indeed the Lord? Were those wounds no phantom tokens? Did the sight with truth accord? Scarce believing, joy unbounded, leapt to greet the Saviour’s word. Prostrate falling, Thomas worshipped: ‘O my Master, Lord, and God’, here in truth was Christ the Saviour who the path of suffering trod, and, to ransom souls unnumbered, broke in pieces Satan’s rod. Thomas, sight has now convinced thee, faith within thy heart has stirred; blessèd more those faithful servants, trusting in the Saviour’s word, who, though vision is denied them, still believe, and own him Lord.

8

Grant, O Father, that among them we thy servants may be known, and the ground be ever fruitful where the seed of faith was sown, till at length in heaven’s glory, faith and vision are but one. George Bourne Timms (1910-1997) REGENT SQUARE, NEH 173 / CP 501

Prayer at the Preparation of the Table Father, accept all we bring before you this day. Guide us with your love and feed us at your table as you nourish the faith of the Church by the preaching of your apostles. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Great Thanksgiving Prayer

It is indeed right and good that we should give you thanks, praise and glory, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. For after his resurrection he sent out his apostles and evangelists to preach the gospel to all nations and lead us in the way of truth. Himself the chief cornerstone, he founded his Church upon the apostles firmly to stand for ever as a sign of your holiness upon earth and a living witness to all of the way that leads to heaven. 9

And so with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we lift our voices and join in their unending hymn of praise: Choir

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Accept our praises, heavenly Father, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, and as we follow his example and obey his command, grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit these gifts of bread and wine may be to us his body and his blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Therefore, heavenly Father, we remember his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross; we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; we look for the coming of your kingdom, and with this bread and this cup we make the memorial of Christ your Son our Lord. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again.

10

Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise, and as we eat and drink these holy gifts in the presence of your divine majesty, renew us by your Spirit, inspire us with your love and unite us in the body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen. We kneel or sit. Silence

The Lord’s Prayer As our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

11

Giving of Communion Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. As the ministers receive communion the choir sings Choir

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: grant us peace.

Please indicate if you would like a gluten-free wafer.

Communion Motet The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures. He leadeth me beside the still waters. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil, For you are with me, You will comfort me. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Text: Psalm 23 Music: Howard Goodall (b. 1938)

Prayer after Communion Almighty God, who on the day of Pentecost sent your Holy Spirit to the apostles with the wind from heaven and in tongues of flame, filling them with joy and boldness to preach the gospel: by the power of the same Spirit strengthen us to witness to your truth and to draw everyone to the fire of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Valediction of Choristers Alex Berry, Director of Music Dean Andy, I present to you: Rhianna Peddar Frieda Wellesley-Smith Luke Sayles Naomi Reiss past choristers in our Girls’ and Boys’ Choirs, and Choral Scholar, each having completed their time of service in our Cathedral Choirs. Hymn Hope of our calling: hope through courage won by those who dared to share all Christ had done. Saints of today, Christ’s banner now unfurled, will bring his gospel to a waiting world. Hope of our calling: hope with strength empowered, inspired by all that we have seen and heard; this call is ours, for we are chosen too, to live for God in all we say and do. Hope of our calling: hope with grace outpoured, from death’s despair the gift of life restored; our call to serve, to wash each other’s feet, to bring Christ’s healing touch to all we meet. Hope of our calling: hope by faith made bold to sow God’s righteousness throughout the world; bring peace from conflict, fruitfulness from weeds, the kingdom’s harvest from the kingdom’s seeds. Hope of our calling: Spirit-filled, unbound, old joys remembered and new purpose found, our call refreshed by sacrament and word, we go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Ally Barrett (b. 1975) WOODLANDS, SP 157 / CP 362

The Blessing God, who has prepared for you a city with eternal foundations, bring you, with all the saints, to the eternal and triumphant joy of that city; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

The Dismissal Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen. Voluntary
