CHARLOTTENBURG FROM A ROYAL PAST TO A PROMISING FUTURE

In 1695, the future Queen Sophie Charlotte received one of the manors in today’s district of Charlottenburg as a gift. After her death in 1705, the summer residence Schloss Lietzenburg, which had been commissioned by her, and the opposite lying settlement were renamed to Charlottenburg and given its town charter by Frederick I. In 1920 Charlottenburg was incorporated into Greater Berlin.

Throughout its turbulent history, Charlottenburg has been witness to royal families, destruction in the Second World War, the first high-rise buildings and a new urban center status. Since 2010, the City West has been experiencing a new boom, which has had notable effects on the district’s economic and cultural interest and has helped give the area a high-class, elegant and future-oriented appearance.

CHARLOTTENBURG / SCHÖNEBERG BETWEEN WORLDS, WHERE KINGS MET FARMERS While the history of Charlottenburg has been dominated by the royal family since 1695, the history of Schöneberg started as a one-street village. The proximity to Berlin, however, also helped to boost the development of Schöneberg. Farmers made small fortunes as their fields were reclassified to building land and by 1919 the modest settlement had grown to a large city district. Charlottenburg, which owes its name to the memory of Queen Sophie Charlotte, already received its town charter in 1705. In 1920, both cities were incorporated into Greater Berlin. The current district boundaries date back to the local government reform of 1938. Since 2010, the City West has been experiencing a new boom, which has had notable effects on the district’s economic and cultural interest and has helped give the area a high-class, elegant and future-oriented appearance.

BETWEEN KADEWE AND BAYERISCHEM VIERTEL EXCLUSIVE, ELEGANT AND TRADITIONAL NEIGHBORHOOD Passauer Straße and Ansbacher Straße frame the historic Kaufhaus des Westens. The department store, which was founded in 1907, today has a sales area of ​​60,000 m² and is the largest department store in continental Europe. Particularly in the 1920’s, Passauer Straße contributed to the area’s nickname “Charlottengrad”. With a Russian deli, a bar, a club for Russian emigrants, a Russian fashion house, a guesthouse and a library, the unusually high proportion of Russian inhabitants had a big influence on the area. Since 1938, the area around the Wittenbergplatz has belonged to the district of Schöneberg, but its Charlottenburg past can clearly be seen in both the face and the spirit of this neighborhood.

ARCHITECTURE HISTORICALLY CONSCIOUS AND PROGRESSIVE The architecture of the Penthouses City West is a prime example of the face of the new City West.
