CONGREGATION BETH ISRAEL OF SAN DIEGO l WINTER 2025 /

By Senior Rabbi Jason Nevarez

Friends - As we move into the final stretch of 2025 and prepare to welcome the light of Chanukah, I’ve been reflecting on what truly makes our Beth Israel community great. It’s tempting to point to accomplishments or programs - and we certainly have many to be proud of - but greatness is not measured simply by what we do. It is measured by who we are and how we show up for one another. It’s the quiet moments of connection, the courageous acts of showing up, and the ways we create meaning together. That is the heartbeat of this sacred community.
This season offers a powerful window into that truth. This month, we welcome a unit of IDF veterans into our homes and our hearts through the Peace of Mind program; we have leaned into courageous conversations about issues that matter deeply; our teens are preparing for the Platt Teen Trip to Israel at a moment of immense significance; and soon we will gather as one community to light our Chanukiot (Chanukah menorahs), celebrating joy and resilience in a world that needs both. Each of these moments reveals who we are and how we are choosing to shape our future.
Hosting the Peace of Mind soldiers is, without question, one of the most meaningful honors of our year. These young men carry stories of trauma and strength that are often beyond our imagination, and yet, when they join us for Shabbat dinner, services, and the simple joy of sharing space, that distance collapses. We become partners in their healing, witnesses to their courage, and reminders that the Jewish story - our story - binds us across oceans. Their presence invites us to remember that supporting Israel is not abstract; it is profoundly personal. It means opening our homes, our hearts, and our lives to those who have given so much on behalf of the Jewish people.
At the same time, our community continues to engage in courageous conversations - moments where we lean into complexity rather than shy away from it. Whether discussing antisemitism, Israel, identity, political discourse, or the ethical demands of this moment, I have watched our congregation model something rare and deeply needed: a willingness to listen, to stay curious, and to honor one another’s experiences even when we don’t agree. These conversations are not about uniformity; they are about dignity. They remind us that rehumanizing each other is holy work, and that learning, too, can be an act of love.
And then, there is the inspiring energy of our teens as they prepare for the upcoming Platt Teen Trip to Israel. In any year, this journey is transformative. This year, it is profoundly so. These teens will engage in an exchange with the youth of Sha’ar HaNegev, walk the streets of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, and bear witness to a nation still healing and rebuilding - and yet holding fiercely to hope. They will not just see Israel; they will feel her heartbeat. My hope is that they return not only with memories, but with a deeper sense of identity, responsibility, and pride. When our teens choose to explore their Jewish story so deeply, it’s a reminder that our legacy is in good hands.
Soon, we will gather for Chanukah, filling our campus with light upon light - hundreds of Chanukiot illuminating our shared space. In a year where the world has felt heavy, our ritual of bringing light into darkness resonates more strongly than ever. Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, the founder of Chabad, taught, “A little light dispels much darkness.” Each candle we light declares that hope is not passive; it is a choice we make again and again. Standing shoulder to shoulder as the flames grow steadier, we reaffirm that resilience is part of our inheritance and that communal joy is its own form of spiritual resistance. What ties all of this together - the soldiers’ healing, the honest conversations, the teens’ journey, the ritual of light - is not coincidence. It is the thread that has always run through Beth Israel: a commitment to building a community where meaning is created together, where every person is valued, and where each generation has a role in shaping our shared story. We don’t shy away from complexity; we meet it. We don’t retreat in difficult times; we show up. We don’t wait for hope; we make it.
Beth Israel is great because you make it great. You show up with generosity, curiosity, and compassion. You show up in moments of learning, celebration, challenge, and prayer. You show up for one another - and for the world - in ways that reflect the very best of who we can be.
As we enter the season of light, may we recommit to being bearers of that light - to one another, to our broader community, and to the world. May we continue to build a congregation grounded in dignity, strengthened by connection, and inspired by hope. And may we, from strength to strength, keep illuminating the path ahead.
Chag Urim Sameach - wishing you and your loved ones a Chanukah filled with warmth, connection, and beauty.

Shalom!
The fall season has brought a renewed sense of energy and connection to our congregation. It was truly uplifting to see so many familiar faces—and to welcome new ones—during this year’s High Holiday services, which offered both in-person and virtual participation. Whether attending for the first time or returning after many years, members consistently shared how meaningful it was to gather together as a community, to feel the warmth of our congregation, and to experience services that were both inspiring and spiritually elevating. My sincere gratitude goes to our clergy, staff, musicians, choirs, soloists, and the many volunteers whose dedication made this sacred time so memorable.
I also want to express my deep appreciation to past presidents Mary Ann Sher and Dan Jones, who are serving as co-chairs of our Capital Campaign. Their leadership is instrumental as we work to raise the remaining funds needed for our campus renovation and the new mikvah. With $7.8 million of our $12 million goal already committed, we have been able to begin the permitting phase for the mikvah and complete several essential infrastructure projects on our campus—including the roof replacement, select HVAC upgrades, and the installation of a new commercial refrigerator and freezer. These critical improvements were part of our campaign’s original scope, and we are grateful for the generosity that has made this progress possible.
We look forward to broad community engagement as we enter the public phase of the campaign.
I am also pleased to share that our Board of Directors recently concluded its 2025 retreat, focused on reviewing, refining, and approving updated Mission, Vision, and Values statements. These updates reflect who we are today and articulate our aspirations as a cornerstone of Jewish life in San Diego and beyond. Please stay tuned for our upcoming community-wide introduction of these guiding principles.
I look forward to keeping you informed of our continued progress and to seeing you in person soon.
L’Shalom!
As many of you know, Beth Israel has embarked on an inspiring journey to restore and preserve our beloved campus while creating a beautiful, state-of-the-art mikvah and mikvah program to serve our members and the greater San Diego community. More than a building project, Building for the Future is about ensuring that Beth Israel remains a vibrant, welcoming, and meaningful center of Jewish life for generations to come—a true home where it is safe and joyful to be Jewish.
Thanks to the dedication of our Campaign Cabinet and the generosity of so many in our community, we’ve already raised

over $7.8 million toward our $12 million goal. We are deeply grateful to all who have joined this effort.
In the months ahead, we will continue to share updates and will reach out to the entire Beth Israel community to invite you to participate in the campaign. Your support reflects the spirit of l’dor v’dor—from generation to generation—ensuring that our community’s light continues to shine brightly for years to come.
Happy Chanukah, Mary Ann Scher and Dan Jones, Campaign Co-Chairs
RABBI ELANA ACKERMAN HIRSCH'S MESSAGE

Shalom friends,
IT IS A TIME FOR US TO channel OUR
In the winter months, many of us long for more light. When we celebrate Chanukah, we add more light to the world each night, adding a candle until there are nine shining lights. This light isn’t meant to exist only in our personal homes and spaces. Rather, we are meant to “publicize the miracle of Hannukah” by placing our menorah in the window, letting others know that we are Jewish and celebrating the miracle of the oil lasting eight days. I know that many of us feel more hesitant to share that we are Jewish in this time, but this season isn’t just about sharing Judaism: it is also a time for us to channel our inner light to make the world a better place.
Chassidic tradition says that lighting the menorah reminds us of our relationship with the Divine. God is the ultimate source of light, but the only way for this light to be seen out in the world, is for us to channel it through
our actions. We have the power to make a difference in the lives of our families, friends, and communities. Light is added to the world even in the darkest months through our acts of gemilut chassidim, acts of loving-kindness and care for others, as well as through our very presence in the world.
There is a light within each of us that Jewish tradition says is hidden from view. It is our job to let our light out and share it with the world. This season reminds us of the importance and beauty in sharing our whole selves, including our Jewish selves or our connection to Judaism, and who we are with others so that the hidden light within us can shine. It also reminds us of the importance of our actions.
May this season be full of hope, of kindness and compassion for ourselves and others, and of course, full of more light.

During the High Holy Days, our Beth Israel community came together in sacred reflection and song, praying for renewal and awakening hope for the year ahead. In moments of stillness and the music of our prayers, we found strength in one another and in the enduring spirit of our tradition. As Israel and the global Jewish community faced profound pain and uncertainty, we stood united in faith and compassion. Guided by our clergy and leadership with care and understanding, we entered the new year with hearts full of gratitude and enduring hope.

This year’s graduating senior class stands as a shining example of young Jewish leadership within our Lee and Frank z”l Goldberg Family Religious School. Over the years, these students have grown not only in knowledge but in their commitment to Jewish life and learning. Their journey through our program has been marked by curiosity, compassion, and a deep sense of responsibility to the Jewish community.
As madrichim (teen teaching assistants), our seniors have played an essential role in shaping the next generation of Jewish learners. Week after week, they have guided younger students in discovering the beauty of Jewish tradition, community, and values. Whether leading discussions, helping with classroom activities, or modeling participation in all school tefillah, they have embodied what it means to be active, authentic Jewish role models. Through their presence, they have shown that Jewish learning is not something that ends after Bnei Mitzvah—it continues to grow and evolve.
Inside the classroom, these teens have not shied away from the complex questions of modern Jewish life. They have engaged deeply in discussions about Israel, the challenges and opportunities that come with social media, and the decisions that await them as they prepare for college. Their ability to wrestle thoughtfully with these issues—while maintaining a sense of respect and curiosity—demonstrates maturity and insight well beyond their years. Beyond the classroom, this class has also built meaningful traditions that have strengthened our school community. During our 4th-7th Grade retreat last year, they began a new tradition: teen-led programming that combines fun with meaningful Jewish lessons. The creativity and care they brought to this initiative quickly became one of the highlights of our retreat experiences.

As we welcomed the Jewish New Year, our classrooms were alive with the joy of learning, laughter, and meaningful tradition. Rosh Hashanah gave our infants, toddlers, and preschoolers the opportunity to explore the values of reflection, kindness, and new beginnings. Through tasting apples and honey, hearing the sound of the shofar, and creating beautiful holiday-themed art, our children built a sweet and lasting connection to Jewish life.
Now, as we turn the page on a new season, we are excited to begin preparing for Chanukah — a time of light, hope, and miracles. The scent of latkes, the sparkle of menorahs, and the joy of singing holiday songs will soon fill our classrooms, continuing our tradition of bringing Jewish holidays to life in age-appropriate and meaningful ways.
With the care and creativity of our dedicated educators, every day at Bill & Sid Rubin Preschool is filled with opportunities to learn, celebrate, and grow together.

Wishing our families continued sweetness in the year ahead — and a bright beginning to the Chanukah season

In October, Caring Community hosted a three-part series of informative and supportive sessions led by spiritual leaders, legal experts, and community professionals. The program, Preparing For and Managing Loss, was open to the entire community. Each session focused on a different aspect of loss—from Jewish traditions and spiritual practices to legal planning and the logistics of burial.
In November, Caring Community partnered with Jewish Family Service to convene representatives from synagogues and Jewish organizations across San Diego. Together, they explored ways to strengthen a culture of kindness, inclusiveness, and mutual support within the Jewish community. The symposium culminated in the formation of a 34-member coalition of community leaders, clergy, professionals, and volunteers committed to building a more resilient, welcoming, and vibrant Jewish future in San Diego.
For further information and how to get involved, contact Katey Lindley, Director of Caring Community at klindley@cbisd.org.

My connection to Judaism began when I was just five years old, standing on the bimah in Los Angeles for my consecration. From that moment on, Jewish life became a central thread in who I am. I spent twelve years in Sunday school, nine summers at Jewish day and overnight camps, and later joined a Jewish sorority in college — each experience weaving another layer into my Jewish identity.
Howard and I were married 48 years ago in a Beth Israel ceremony led by one of its rabbis, and the synagogue has been our spiritual home ever since. Our sons, David and Mark, grew up here — from preschool and day school to their Bar Mitzvahs and confirmations. Now, our granddaughters, Ellie and Emmy, are continuing the tradition, having attended Beth Israel’s preschool as well.
Over the years, Beth Israel has given me countless opportunities to serve and give back. I’ve loved working on committees such as the Rabbinic Search Committee, the Nominating Committee, and the Torah Project celebrating Beth Israel’s 150th Anniversary. Beyond the synagogue, I’ve served as President of the Women’s Auxiliary at Seacrest, President of the Parent Association at La Jolla Country Day School, and I’m a lifetime member of Hadassah.
One of my proudest moments came in 2022, when I became a Bat Mitzvah — a milestone that deepened my faith and connection to Jewish learning. In retirement, I’ve also embraced my passion for running, completing 14 marathons and earning the Abbott World Marathon Majors Six Star distinction in 2023.

Congratulations to Dan & Phyllis Epstein for being named the Outstanding Philanthropists of 2025 by the Association of Fundraising Professionals San Diego Chapter. This award is presented to an individual or family with a proven record of exceptional generosity who, through direct financial support, has demonstrated outstanding civic and charitable responsibility, and whose generosity encourages others to take philanthropic leadership roles on a community, national and/or international level.

Beth Israel member Andrew Garmen took part in the first Israel Ride since October 7, cycling from Jerusalem to Eilat with more than 100 riders from around the world. The weeklong journey for peace and the environment passed through Beit Guvrin, Sderot, the Negev, and Mitzpe Ramon, ending in Eilat with breathtaking views of Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia.
Riders aimed to raise $1 million for the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies, where Israelis, Palestinians, and Jordanians collaborate on crossborder environmental solutions. We’re so proud of Andrew for riding with heart and purpose toward a more peaceful and sustainable future!

Beth Israel congratulates Dr. Andrew Lowy and Dr. Jason Sicklick, M.D on being named UC San Diego Health Top Docs in Surgical Oncology. This honor, awarded by their peers, recognizes their exceptional leadership, dedication, and high regard they’ve earned within the medical community and those they serve.

Valeria and Yan Belsky
Valeria and Yan Belsky, along with their children Richard and Julianna, are excited to join the Beth Israel community. The family is passionate about their Jewish heritage, helping others, and spending time together traveling. Ricky enjoys basketball and pickleball, while Julianna loves playing piano and volleyball. They were inspired to become members so their family could continue learning about Jewish traditions, and they are especially looking forward to Julianna participating in B’nai Mitzvah classes. The Belskys already appreciate the friendly and welcoming atmosphere at Beth Israel, and Julianna is enjoying making new friends. They are eager to meet other families and contribute to the community in meaningful ways.
Judy Briggs
Judy recently joined Beth Israel after moving to San Diego in February. Following the recent passing of her husband, she has been attending services with her son, Cory Briggs, and daughterin-law, Seekey Cacciatore. A retired social worker (L.C.S.W.), Judy has been impressed by the synagogue’s leadership, values, and the meaningful religious services it provides to its members. She is grateful to be welcomed into such a caring and vibrant community and looks forward to connecting with others as she settles into her new home.
Lexi and Joel Haimsohn
Lexi and Joel Haimsohn live in Mission Valley with their daughter, Sadie, who attends the Bill & Sid Rubin Preschool. Joel’s family has deep roots in San Diego and has been part of Beth Israel for generations—a tradition the Haimsohns are proud to continue. They want Sadie to grow up surrounded by Jewish faith and community. Together, Joel and Lexi help lead their family business, Lawrance Furniture, continuing a long family tradition. The family enjoys design, beach walks, and trying new foods, while Sadie loves animals and brings joy to everyone with her bright, infectious smile.
Amanda Haworth Blieden and Alexander Blieden
Amanda and Alexander Blieden, along with their children Ari and Spencer, live in Louisville, KY, but Amanda grew up in La Jolla and at Beth Israel. The family loves to travel, are devoted Chargers fans (though they jokingly do not acknowledge the team’s move to LA), and are very involved in the Jewish Federation in Louisville. Growing up, Beth Israel was home for Amanda, and the family wants to maintain that connection while visiting San Diego regularly. They already love the warmth of the community and the personal connection with Rabbi Cantor Arlene Bernstein, who has been part of the family for generations, from Amanda’s Bat Mitzvah and Confirmation to their wedding and the baby namings of Ari and Spencer.
Laura Katz and Nick Celano
Laura and Nick both grew up in University City and now live together in Mission Hills with their "pizza bagel" children (a nod to their blended Italian and Jewish roots). Laura attended Beth Israel as a child and had her Bat Mitzvah at the old Banker's Hill location. In their free time, the Celanos love playing sports, hiking, exploring new restaurants, and spending time with friends and family. Nick and Laura are already impressed by the warmth of the Beth Israel community and look forward to building a stronger Jewish connection in their hometown for themselves and their children. The whole family looks forward to making new friends and adding more Jewish joy to their lives.
Marjie and Jeffrey Major
Marjie and Jeffrey Major recently relocated to Del Mar Highlands from the Philadelphia area (Go Birds!) and are delighted to join the Beth Israel family along with their son and daughterin-law, Max and Melinda Matez. They are yoga enthusiasts who also enjoy hiking, traveling, and exploring the San Diego theatre scene. Marjie and Jeff have found joy and inspiration in Beth Israel’s meaningful and musical services and are excited to be part of such a welcoming and caring community.

Melinda and Max Matez
Max and Melinda moved to San Diego two years ago and now call Del Mar home. Both are originally from New Jersey (Max from the South, Melinda from Central) but didn’t meet until they were living in Los Angeles! The couple are passionate Philadelphia sports fans and avid vinyl collectors across a variety of genres. Since settling in San Diego, they have been looking to deepen their connection with the Jewish community. With Max’s parents, Jeff and Marjie Major, also new members, joining Beth Israel was a natural choice. Max and Melinda love the synagogue’s welcoming and inclusive spirit and look forward to getting involved and connecting with other members.
Estela Mitrani
Estela Mitrani and her sons, Elijah (11) and Wolf (8), are thrilled to join the Beth Israel family! Originally from Mexico City, Estela has called San Diego home for over 30 years and works for the Jewish Community Foundation, where she is passionate about supporting and strengthening the local Jewish community. Elijah and Wolf attend SDJA and enjoy the vibrancy of student life. As a family, they love spending time with friends and family, playing sports, traveling, and exploring new experiences. They are excited to meet new friends and become active participants in Beth Israel, sharing in its welcoming spirit and strong sense of community.
Jenna Larry and Justin Neville
Jenna and Justin are excited to join the Beth Israel community with their 5-month-old daughter, Charley, who was born in May 2025. The family lives in Mira Mesa, having relocated to San Diego in March 2022 from Dublin, Ireland. Jenna, originally from Los Angeles, enjoys staying active and taking walks with Charley and their Irishdoodle, Sadie, while Justin loves golfing and watching football. They were inspired to join Beth Israel to find a wonderful infant daycare and preschool for Charley, as well as a place to nurture Jewish values in their interfaith family. They are looking forward to connecting with other young families and love the caring teachers and staff at the Bill and Sid Rubin Preschool, who have warmly welcomed Charley this year.
Allie and Noah Rosen
Allie and Noah Rosen are thrilled to join the Beth Israel community with their one-year-old daughter, Reese. The family lives in La Mesa and enjoys going on adventures together, visiting the zoo, and spending time with friends and family. They share their home with two playful cats and love the energy of family life. Inspired by friends, they wanted to join a welcoming community where Reese can grow in her Jewish faith. Allie and Noah have been impressed by the friendliness of everyone they’ve met and especially enjoy Young Family Shabbat services, which offer a fun-filled evening of song, prayer, and connection.
Jennifer and Charlie Ridley
Jennifer and Charlie recently moved from Brooklyn, NY, to Bird Rock, La Jolla, and are thrilled to join the Beth Israel community. Jennifer called Brooklyn home for over 20 years, while Charlie, originally from England, lived there for 15. Together with their sons, William, and James, they love traveling, playing pickleball, enjoying live music, boogie boarding, camping, and board games. From the moment they arrived, they felt warmly welcomed at Beth Israel and were excited for their children to begin Hebrew school. William has been enjoying J2 youth group events, and James loves spending time with his new teen buddies, the madrichim.

She is a loving sister to Ethan, Zoe, and Avi. Liora attends High Tech Middle Media Arts in Point Loma, where she is known as an excellent student and a trusted, quiet leader among her peers. She leads not by seeking attention, but through her steady kindness, responsibility, and empathy. Liora’s name means “God’s gift of light,” and she truly lives up to it. Whether playing volleyball, surfing with her school club, babysitting, or embracing new adventures while traveling, she brings a calm joy and gentle strength to everything she does. Deeply moved by the challenges faced by those without shelter, Liora has shown a meaningful commitment to supporting the homeless, helping to organize school efforts, preparing care packages, and offering dignity and compassion to those often overlooked. As she becomes a Bat Mitzvah, Liora carries with her a heart grounded in humility, a spirit that uplifts others, and a quiet but powerful dedication to making the world kinder— one thoughtful act at a time.

GABRIEL
GIVON
Feb 21, 10am
Gabriel is the son of Laura and Roy Givon and the grandson of Jocy and Daniel Givon; Janet (z”l) and Walter Henry. Gabriel enjoys anything to do with LEGO or engineering, which is why he got involved in the FLL at school (Robotics adventures using LEGO).
Gabriel also has a big fascination with the Titanic, its design, its flaws, and its story.
As an inspiring engineer, Gabriel loves to learn how things work, the detailed designs of machines, and the mystery of complex structures. When he is not all about learning, Gabriel spends his time with his family camping and exploring National Parks as well as other outdoor activities. Another creative side of Gabriel is the viola. Gabriel is in his second year playing at the San Diego Youth Symphony, as well as in the school orchestra. With his love of dogs, it is no surprise that for his Mitzvah Project, Gabriel is helping the Humane Society in comforting animals small and large by creating blankets, hammocks, animal puzzles, and more.
