Beth Israel's Annual Fundraiser: L'Chaim, To Life!

Shalom!

WE MUST REMAIN vibrant AND healthy FOR OUR community

I am John Lefter and I am excited and privileged to serve as the President of the Board of Directors of Beth Israel. My wife Angela and I have been members of Beth Israel for 13 years. I was born and raised in Bucharest, Romania and earned a Bachelor’s in Finance from San Diego State University and a Master’s in Accounting from the University of Notre Dame. Angela is a native San Diegan and a proud Aztec as well. Our children Aaron (11) and Alexandra (9) are alumni of the Bill and Sid Rubin Preschool and current Lee and Frank Goldberg Family Religious School students.

In my professional life, I specialize in financial and operational audits and advisory services. I am the Director of Internal Audit Services for Kaiser Permanente and was previously the Director of Internal Audit for Sharp HealthCare. My volunteerism combines my professional expertise with my passion for non-profits in our community.

Having served Beth Israel over the past decade in different roles and committees, including Treasurer of the Board, I have firsthand experience with some of the inner workings and an appreciation for how many people support the success of all facets that make up Beth Israel. I benefit from the strength, vision and leadership of the board presidents who have come before me and plan to lean on their wisdom. My success also relies on an incredible Board and lay volunteers that bring new ideas, boundless energy, and willingness to roll up their sleeves for Beth Israel. In each cycle of terms we see talent roll off the Board, thank you to outgoing Board members, Ryan Goldenhar, David Kuhn, and Lori Shearer. We also see new talent step up, welcome to incoming Board members, David Olsen-Velazquez, Julie Tedde and Rachel Wegner.

I look forward to deepening my partnership with our clergy team and welcoming Rabbi Elana Ackerman Hirsch. We are a large multi-faceted community and are blessed to have spiritual leaders and staff, under the guidance and support of Senior Rabbi Jason Nevarez, who love, sustain, guide, inspire, challenge, teach and carry us no matter where we are in our Jewish journey.

The three-legged stool that ensures our success is not complete without our talented staff led by the amazing Lesley Mills who brings patience, humility, passion, creativity and always a smile to even the most challenging times.

The dangers to our Jewish community cannot be understated. We are still reeling from the October 7 massacres and kidnappings and the ongoing war in Gaza. Our hearts, prayers and support go out to our brothers and sisters in Israel, as well as to Am Yisrael, the People of Israel, around the world. In the US and locally in San Diego, we continue to see the rise of antisemitism, which was already at an all-time high before

October 7. Antisemitism impacts our daily lives and those of our children on college campuses, in high school, and even in younger grades. Beth Israel continues to be a place of safety, a place to grieve, and a place to recharge so we can keep fighting for a better world. We lead by example and partner with other Jewish and non-Jewish organizations to educate, increase awareness, and form networks of support and reform.

The realities of this time underscore the need for Beth Israel. We must remain vibrant and healthy to meet the needs of the community. We are blessed to have the financial resources to navigate uncertain times but with our continued growth in membership and increased community needs following the Pandemic and the war in Israel, we must obtain meaningful financial support from you. Our leadership is diligent in the efficient financial management of our resources and our lay leaders, staff and clergy continue to be innovative financially, although we are already a lean organization. We need your help to ensure we can continue to provide you with the programs and services that make a difference in your life when you need them whether that is now or at an unknown time in the future. As you renew your membership commitment, Beth Israel needs you to contribute in a meaningful way at, or above, the annual sustaining membership level of $2,830 per household. In addition, as we launch focused campaigns such as the “Building for the Future” Campaign for campus renovation and upgrade, the construction of our Rabbi/Cantor Arlene Bernstein Mikvah, and growing our Endowment Fund, we look for your participation if you are able.

The focus of my presidency will be in three critical areas:

1) Ensure a sustainable financial future so Beth Israel can meet known future needs and have the resources to adapt and meet the challenges of an unknown future.

2) Efficient and effective governance along with continuance of the implementation of the Seven Strategic Commitments to keep all facets of Beth Israel aligned with an overarching blueprint for success.

3) Engagement, building on the momentum of our renewed membership growth in the last few years, to focus on strategies so we engage both members and prospective members, continuing to meet them where they are and making sure we have the capacity to meaningfully support their needs.

Beth Israel’s mission starts and ends with service to you, our members. Thank you for choosing Beth Israel as your spiritual home. We welcome and appreciate your diversity and the contributions of your talent, time and treasure. You entrust us with holding you throughout the entirety of your Jewish journey. This is a responsibility we do not take lightly, and we look forward to our continued partnership in serving you.

RABBI’S MESSAGE

Dear Friends,

OUR COLLECTIVE strength IS inspiring

As we will soon move past May Gray and June Gloom and enter into the warmth and vibrancy of summer, I am reflecting on the myriad ways in which we, as a Jewish community, have and continue to stand together to support one another and advocate for our collective values and needs. This sense of unity and mutual support is the bedrock of our community's strength and resilience, especially as we continue to navigate these trying moments.

One of the key events this season where we demonstrated this unity was at the Jewish Public Affairs Committee (JPAC) conference in Sacramento. Held annually, the JPAC conference is the largest single gathering of Jewish community leaders and advocates in our state, bringing together a diverse array of voices and perspectives. This year, our delegation's participation (both from CBI and the greater San Diego community) was not only robust but also deeply impactful.

Advocacy: The JPAC conference serves as a vital platform for the Jewish community to engage directly with policymakers, advocate for crucial issues, and collaborate on strategies to enhance our communal life. This year, our delegation focused on several key areas:

Combating Antisemitism: With the exponential growth of antisemitism on the rise globally, our presence at the JPAC conference was a crucial opportunity to address this disturbing trend. We met with lawmakers to discuss enhancing security measures for Jewish institutions, implementing educational programs to combat hate, and promoting stronger legal frameworks to deter antisemitic acts. These efforts are vital not just for the safety of our community, but for the broader principle that no one should live in fear because of their identity.

Additionally this year, we laid focus to the need for increased security funding for Jewish institutions, as well as accountability for those on college campuses (and beyond) who spew and teach Jew-hatred.

Supporting Israel: This remains a cornerstone of our community's advocacy. At JPAC, we emphasized, especially in these moments post October 7th, the importance of maintaining a strong and vibrant relationship between our state and Israel is critical. This included advocating for continued economic partnerships, educational exchanges, and cultural

collaborations. Our efforts help ensure that Israel remains a strong, secure, and prosperous nation, reflecting our deep and enduring connection to the land and people of Israel.

Interfaith and Intercommunity Relations: A significant aspect of advocacy involved building bridges with other communities. We recognize that our strength is amplified when we join forces with others who share our commitment to justice, equality, and peace. By fostering strong interfaith and intercommunity relations, we not only advocate for our needs but also contribute to a more inclusive and harmonious society.

The success of our advocacy at the JPAC conference underscores the power of collective action. When we come together as a community, our voices are amplified, and our impact is magnified. This collective strength is what enables us to effect meaningful change and to support one another in times of need. I am hopeful that next year, many of you will join us to strengthen our advocacy in Sacramento and our Social Action network right here at Beth Israel.

Our participation in the JPAC conference is just one example of how we stand up for our community. Throughout the year, I know many of you engage in numerous initiatives that reflect our values and commitment to one another. Whether it's through volunteering, philanthropy, or simply being there for a neighbor in need, each act of kindness and solidarity contributes to the fabric of our community.

Over the coming months, as we launch our Israel Engagement Network and continue to build out our robust Social Action Network, we will need you, our Beth Israel family, to engage in new and meaningful ways. Our collective strength is one of our superpowers!

Our participation in the JPAC conference was a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish when we stand together. It highlighted the importance of advocacy, community support, and the power of collective action. As we enjoy the summer months, let us continue to embody these principles in all that we do, strengthening our community so that we can continue to make a positive impact on the world around us.

May this summer be a time of growth, reflection, and renewal for us all.

RABBI’S MESSAGE

BETH ISRAEL IS proud TO introduce...

We extend a warm welcome to Elana as she becomes part of our Beth Israel family! We eagerly anticipate Elana bringing her passion for teaching, dedication to fostering meaningful connections, and love for Torah and learning into our community.

As we embrace Elana, we're excited to delve deeper into her journey:

In your role as a rabbinic intern at Loyola Marymount University Hillel, you engage with Jewish college students who are seeking connection and meaning in their Jewish identity. What unique challenges and opportunities do you encounter in this setting amidst the ongoing events on campus across the country?

This year, it was a challenge to help students navigate an often-one-sided campus culture where many Jewish students felt caught or forced to “pick a side” about the events of 10/7, or like their Jewish identity was not welcome in some campus spaces. I helped students through the difficulties of social media and navigating relationships with their friends in authentic ways that honored their Jewish identities.

There were also many wonderful opportunities for connection. I’m passionate about poetry and taught a class using a curriculum I wrote about Israeli poetry. This session led to vulnerable and meaningful conversations about the conflict and about students’ relationships to Israel. I also taught a six-week long class about pluralism and diversity in Israeli society, and formed strong relationships with students as we discussed Jewish identity, how religious we are (or are not), and what the State of Israel means to us.

Reflecting on your teaching diverse experiences, one of your dreams was to living is Israel. While in Israel you taught English to 1st through 6th graders. How has this chapter shaped your journey towards rabbinical service?

My time living in Israel and teaching English shaped my Jewish life. It was impactful seeing Judaism through Israeli children’s eyes because of how integrated Judaism is in their daily lives. They just are Jewish, and they don’t have to think about being Jewish because the world around them is Jewish. There was no separation between people’s Judaism and their day-to-day lives and that was something I’d never seen before.

I realized that my own Jewish life was compartmentalized; I sometimes went to Shabbat services, went to synagogue on the High Holidays, and sometimes kept kosher. My secular and Jewish lives were largely separate.

Living and teaching in Israel made me want to stop seeing my secular and Jewish lives as separate but rather see my life and the things that I already do as being inherently Jewish because I’m Jewish. In my rabbinic work, I hope to inspire others to feel the same.

Your passion for Judaism shines through your work. Can you share a particularly impactful moment or experience that reaffirmed your calling to serve as a rabbi?

One moment that reaffirmed my calling to be a rabbi was with a conversion student. We were studying Pirkei Avot (Ethics of Our Fathers) when my student made a comment about a verse that floored me. Her comment was insightful and challenged the way I had been thinking about the text.

That day, I learned from my student, and I was so moved by her interpretation that when I studied this same verse in a class I was taking in school, I shared her interpretation and understanding of this text with my classmates.

This was such a powerful moment because of what Pirkei Avot discusses in its very first line. It says, “Moses received Torah from God at Sinai. He transmitted it to Joshua, Joshua to the elders, the elders to the prophets, the prophets to the members of the Great Assembly (1:1).”

We are supposed to see ourselves as also receiving this chain of transmission and the tradition of learning so that we may go on and teach the next generation of Jewish people. This moment with my student was powerful because it connected me and my student to this ancient chain of passing down Torah.

I feel lucky and honored to get to be a part of our tradition and to have had the experience of teaching students and being taught by my students. This feeling of being a part of that long chain reaffirmed why I want to be a rabbi.

As you embark on your journey into our vibrant community of Beth Israel, what aspirations and visions do you harbor for your involvement in congregational life?

I’m excited to learn more about all of the amazing things that happen at Beth Israel; I love what I’ve learned so far but know that there is so much more to learn about congregational life and the Beth Israel community. I’m looking forward to building relationships with people from all parts of the community and forming connections. Eventually, I want to bring my love of poetry to the community, perhaps through teaching or in services. And I want to help people find what speaks to them in Judaism, whether that’s study, art, culture, tikkun olam, or prayer. There are many ways to live Jewish lives, and I want to be able to support, celebrate, and uplift all of the diverse ways to live Jewishly in the Beth Israel community.

Beyond your rabbinical duties, do you indulge in hobbies or activities that nourish your spirit and contribute to your overall well-being amidst the demands of your vocation?

I believe that it’s important to have hobbies or activities that nourish the spirit! I love being outside, going for long walks while listening to audiobooks or talking to friends and family, and doing yoga. I also like to cook and am good at getting creative and making up new recipes with whatever I have left in the fridge! I love listening to music and want to learn how to knit.

GREG MARKOW

Cemetery & Mausoleum (C&M) Association Chair

Greg Markow has been an integral part of the Beth Israel community since 2000, shortly after he and his family moved to San Diego. Julianne and Greg’s sons celebrated their B'nei Mitzvah at Beth Israel and continued their Jewish education at the Lee and Frank Goldberg Religious School throughout high school. Greg's journey with Beth Israel took a significant turn when Rabbi Berk called to invite his wife, Julianne to join the Board; Greg answered instead and stepped into this new role. Over the years, Greg has made substantial contributions to Beth Israel, serving on the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee, and as congregation treasurer. His involvement has fostered lasting friendships and a deep connection to the San Diego community. Greg discovered his niche in the Cemetery and Mausoleum Committee, initially attracted by the simplicity of the commitment—four meetings a year and a free lunch. However, he soon realized the profound importance of providing burial spaces, a vital service to Beth Israel members and their extended families. He takes pride in being part of a community that supports its members through all of life’s milestones.

When not tending his grave responsibilities at Beth Israel, Greg enjoys tacos, dive bars, sanitizing his google search history, and contemporary classical music. His unwavering dedication to the community is not only evident through his longstanding service and ongoing positive impact but also reflects Beth Israel's profound gratitude for his leadership, friendship, and invaluable contributions over the years.

Beth Israel's Cemetery & Mausoleum offers burial spaces at Mount of Olives Memorial Lawns and niches and crypts at Home of Peace Corridors at Cypress View Mausoleum. Both located at El Camino Memorial Park in Sorrento Valley, San Diego. These interment spaces provide a crucial end to our member’s life cycle.

For those considering end-of-life arrangements, Beth Israel offers compassionate and no-obligation assistance. Contact Stuart Simmons at 619-871-4160 or Katey Lindley at 760-815-1974 for more information.

SPOTLIGHT EVENTS IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Rabbi Cantor Jeremy Gimbel

On Monday, May 27, Rabbi Jeremy Gimbel became Rabbi Cantor Jeremy Gimbel by the AJRCA. This achievement is a testament to his dedication and spiritual journey, promising even more enriching musical contributions to our Beth Israel community. We are proud and honored to witness his growth and accomplishments. Mazal tov to Rabbi Cantor Gimbel and his family!

We are thrilled to celebrate Rabbi Cantor Jeremy Gimbel's incredible milestone of singing the national anthem at Petco Park for Jewish Heritage Day. A lifelong San Diego Padres fan, Rabbi Cantor Gimbel fulfilled his bucket-list dream on May 14. This achievement not only showcases his remarkable talent but also brings immense pride to our Beth Israel community. Mazal Tov Rabbi Cantor Gimbel, on this outstanding accomplishment!

Beth Israel's Annual Meeting

At our Beth Israel’s Annual Meeting, we joyfully welcomed our new president, John Lefter, and expressed our deepest gratitude to our departing president, Dan Jones, for his dedicated service. We also honored our retiring Board members and proudly presented the Volunteer of the Year Award to Robyn Spiegel. Their remarkable accomplishments and commitment exemplify the wonderful spirit of our Beth Israel community. We are immensely grateful for their contributions and look forward to continuing our journey together.

Thank You

SOCIAL MEDIA AS A PLATFORM FOR CHANGE AND ADVOCACY WITH DEBBIE LECHTMAN (@ROOTSMETALS)

Tuesday, October 29

Debbie Lechtman is a Jewish, Israeli, and Latina author, educator, content creator, and artist, specializing in Jewish history antisemitism. She condenses complex, multilayered, nuanced, and obscure Jewish history topics into more easily accessible education that she shares with her followers. Debbie is a sitting board member at Indigenous Bridges and writes curricula for the Anti-Defamation League, Creative Community for Peace, and Honest Reporting. She works as a research assistant for a top Israeli journalist.

In our program with Debbie, we will learn about how she has used her platform on Instagram to help combat antisemitism and the spread false information, as well as the role that social media has played in shaping attitudes about Israel and Judaism.
