RABBI’S MESSAGE

Dear Friends,
l HIGH HOLY DAYS l EVENTS IN THE SPOTLIGHT
l MAZAL TOV TO BETH ISRAEL MEMBERS l PROGRAMMING AND INITIATIVES
By Senior Rabbi Jason Nevarez
Dear Friends,
I hope your summer has brought moments of rest, joy, and time with those who matter most.
As the High Holy Days draw near, your Beth Israel clergy and staff are deep in preparation for the sacred task of welcoming 5786 together. Each year, we arrive at this season carrying the weight of the world as it is, and the longing for the world as it could be. This year is no different. We are living through fragile times—moments that test our endurance, our unity, and our spirit as a Jewish people.
And yet, our tradition insists: Od Lo Avda Tikvateinu—Hope Is Not Lost. These words (and this year’s High Holy Day theme at Beth Israel), which beat at the heart of Hatikvah, have carried us across centuries of adversity. Hope is not naïve optimism or blind certainty. It is an act of courage, a refusal to let despair have the final word. Rabbi Jonathan Sacks z”l put it simply:
“Optimism is the belief that things are going to get better. Hope is the belief that if we work hard enough together, we can make things better.”
Rabbi Naomi Levy, in her book Hope Will Find You, writes about discovering hope not as a passive feeling, but as a discipline—a daily choice to lift our eyes toward what is possible, and to participate in creating it. That is what od lo avda tikvateinu demands of us: to believe that hope endures, and to live as if our actions can redeem tomorrow.
As we gather in just a few weeks, the sound of the shofar will pierce our hearts once again, stirring us to awaken from complacency and to recommit ourselves to building lives of meaning and a community of strength. The shofar’s cry reminds us that we are heirs to a legacy that has always chosen hope—not because the path was easy, but because it was essential.
May this sacred season renew our spirits, deepen our compassion, and fortify our resolve. May we carry forward the lesson that, no matter how heavy the present moment feels, hope is never lost—and with it, neither are we.
I look forward to sharing these Days of Awe with you and to stepping into 5786 together—anchored in hope, and ready to bring it to life.
L’shana Tova, Rabbi Jason Nevarez

Shalom!
I hope this summer offered you and your loved ones moments of rest, renewal, and joy. I also hope you were able to join us for some of our incredible summer programming - whether it was our beloved annual Shabbat Under the Stars, the intimate summer courtyard services, or our moving Pride Shabbat. At Pride Shabbat, we were honored to be joined by representatives from a majority of Jewish organizations across San Diego, along with civic leaders and hundreds of community members - over 800 in attendance. The energy, spirit, and unity of that gathering were truly unforgettable.
In addition to our programming, we have continued to move forward on several important initiatives:
• Leadership Development - We are welcoming three new members to our Board of Directors and continuing our thoughtful review of the nominating process. The valuable feedback we received is helping us shape a process that is both efficient and meaningful, ensuring that new leaders can step into their roles with confidence and purpose.
• Campaign Progress - Our Campaign Cabinet has been hard at work, reaching out personally and meeting with members. As of August 23, we have raised more than $7.5 million. We will continue to share updates on our progress in the coming weeks and look forward to broadening our outreach to all in the Beth Israel community in the near future.
• High Holy Day Preparations - Our clergy, staff, and Board are working together to plan an uplifting and memorable High Holy Day experience. We cannot wait to welcome you back to campus as we celebrate renewal, reflection, and community together.
As we approach the New Year, I warmly encourage you to renew your membership, and, if possible, consider increasing your level of support. The extraordinary programming, connection, and care we provide are only possible because of your generosity.
I look forward to updating you further on our progress and seeing you in person soon.

RABBI’S MESSAGE
By Rabbi Arlene Bernstein, Cantor Emerita
RABB’S MESSAGE
By Rabbi Cantor Jeremy Gimbel
From the first sounding of the Shofar on the first day of the month of Elul to the Shofar’s last call at the end of Yom Kippur, hope, is the pervasive theme of our Yamim Noraim, our Days of Awe. The shofar’s calls awaken us to a certain hope that we can change and transform ourselves as individuals and as a community.
When we hear that ethereal call, we are reminded about who we are and what actions we must take to bring about change for the future. Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, of blessed memory, reminded us “to be a Jew is to be an agent of hope…” In our every action, in our every prayer, in our every joyful celebration and sad commemoration, we are agents of our people for hope, not only in our own lifetime, but even when we no longer walk this earth.
Connecting with the cherished memories of our loved ones reminds us of their hopes for their futures and ours, just as we will provide hope for the generations that will follow us with our participation and actions this Holy Day Season.
Our Tikvah, our active hope and actions this New Year will provide the memories of the Shofar’s call— that call is the source and sound of our future. Let it be a call to hopeful action for us this year.
L’shanah Tovah.
Before we know it, we will stand together, before God, before each other, and before ourselves. One of the central rituals of the season is the communal recitation of Ashamnu. In this prayer, we do not say, “ashamti - I have sinned,” but “ashamnu - we have sinned.” Yet, as we offer our communal, confessional prayer, we strike our own chest. This moment of personal vulnerability allows us to name our failings as a collective. How can we hold this act without collapsing into shame or despair?
18th century Ukrainian Rabbi Menachem Nachum Twersky — known as and for his work, “Me’or Einayim” — offers us profound guidance: “This is what it means to ‘love your neighbor as yourself’: as (you relate to) yourself. If we see something unfavorable in ourselves, we do not hate ourselves but that unfavorable thing. This is how we should relate to our fellow. In the end, we are all one. Does not our fellow have a divine portion and a letter in the Torah, just as we have?”
Just as we are invited to discern our flaws without erasing our worth, so, too, must we see that in our neighbors. When we tap our chests during Ashamnu, perhaps we can see this as not a gesture of punishment, but of awakening — knocking gently on the door of compassion for ourselves and those who sit around us. Yes, we declare our shortcomings, but we also awaken love for ourselves and others as flawed and holy human beings.
The High Holy Days are meant to renew and uplift us, leading us to atonement; not crush us and lead us to resentment. By embracing compassion for ourselves and our neighbors, we honor the divine spark in every heart. This season invites us to be both honest and gentle, to see the flaws within ourselves and in each other without turning to hatred and despair.
The very act of confessing together is an act of hope— affirming that tikkun (repair) is possible, that renewal is within reach, our hope is not lost.

Last July, Beth Israel proudly hosted a joyful Pride Shabbat for the San Diego Jewish community. The evening was filled with song, as we were joined by clergy from seven congregations to collaboratively lead the service on the bimah. Nicole Murray-Ramirez, LGBTQ+ activist and co-founder of San Diego Pride, joined us for the evening and spoke about the Jewish community’s involvement in civil rights movements and the importance of speaking up when we see injustice in the world. The evening ended with a festive oneg in the Price Family Courtyard, complete with rainbow challah and celebratory music.

The Lee and Frank z”l Goldberg Family Religious School is excited to welcome Maia Fram to our administrative team, as she joins us in her new capacity as Youth Engagement Coordinator. Maia is a graduate of the school and has grown up at Beth Israel. She was a madricha (teen teaching assistant) and returned to teach 3rd - 6th grade Judaic Studies, as well as 7th grade. Maia has a degree in Family and Human Services, with a minor in Psychology and has a background in doing meaningful work to help those in need in San Diego. Maia is looking forward to combining her passion for social justice and her love of the Beth Israel community to strengthen our Tzedek (Justice) League, develop fun programming for our elementary school aged youth group participants in J2, and think creatively with our high school participants about what our BITY/BBYO youth group will plan together for the year ahead.
For many first-time families, choosing a preschool is one of the most meaningful decisions you’ll make. It shapes your child’s first experiences with learning, friendship, and a sense of belonging. At the Bill & Sid Rubin Preschool, you’ll find all of that—and so much more.
When you bring your child to the Bill & Sid Rubin Preschool, you’ll experience something truly special. You’ll hear the joyful sounds of children singing Hebrew songs, see tiny hands lighting Shabbat candles, and feel the warmth of a community that embraces every child and every family.
Here, Jewish traditions come to life in ways that are age-appropriate, joyful, and deeply meaningful. Your child will build a strong foundation rooted in Jewish values like kindness (chesed), respect (kavod), and community (kehilla). For families just beginning their own Jewish journey, our school is a welcoming space full of support, openness, and growth—for both children and parents.
We’d love to welcome you in person. Come tour the Bill & Sid Rubin Preschool and see the magic for yourself!
Limited spots available. Schedule a tour today. Contact us at 858-900-2530 or schooloffice@cbisd.org.
I serve on Beth Israel’s Board of Directors and Finance Committee. My wife, Annette, and I joined Beth Israel after moving to San Diego from New York City in 2019. Our son is a student at the Bill & Sid Rubin Preschool.
In 2023, I served on the Assistant Rabbinic Search Committee. Beyond a fantastic outcome, (we are lucky to have Rabbi Elana Ackerman Hirsch!), serving on the committee had a profound impact on me. The unique perspectives of my fellow committee members allowed me to gain insights that would not have otherwise been possible. And perhaps most meaningfully, I made incredible friendships in the process.
Beth Israel was an amazing community before I arrived. I hope that my contributions can help to sustain the momentum for years to come.
One of my favorite memories at Beth Israel is from last Chanukah when Annette and I brought our 7 month old son to “Light Up Your Chanukiah!” We will never forget how mesmerized he was by the courtyard full of candlelight.
PRESIDENT OF AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR RADIATION ONCOLOGY
Beth Israel proudly celebrates Beth Israel member, Dr. Catheryn M. Yashar, MD, on her election as President of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), representing more than 10,000 cancer care professionals nationwide. Dr. Yashar currently serves as Chief Medical Officer and Associate Dean at UCSD Health and is a professor of radiation medicine and applied sciences. A nationally recognized expert in brachytherapy, breast and gynecologic cancers, and health policy, she has held numerous leadership roles within ASTRO and other national medical organizations.
I’m Dr. Shayna Davis-Schreiber—a psychologist, mom of four (Ethan, Liora, Zoe, and Avi), and wife to my high school sweetheart, Brett. Beth Israel has been part of our family’s story for decades, from preschool to B’nei Mitzvahs, and now through my role co-leading the Israel Engagement Network and having served as a World Zionist Congress captain.
In November 2023, I traveled with fellow Beth Israel members and clergy on the San Diego Jewish Federation’s Solidarity Mission to Israel. Witnessing the aftermath of October 7th and visiting our sister city, Sha’ar HaNegev, left a lasting impact and inspired my deeper work with the Association of Jewish Psychologists (AJP). I helped launch the first AJP Mission to Israel, bringing trauma experts to stand with Israeli clinicians, researchers, and activists at a time when global solidarity mattered most.
These experiences reshaped my path— strengthening my love for Beth Israel and Israel, while expanding my leadership to unite experts, amplify Israeli voices, and create healing partnerships. By sharing stories, promoting Israeli research, and developing programs that inspire action, I hope to help our community feel more connected, empowered, and proud of our Jewish identity.
In the end, nothing compares to watching my children sing in Hebrew and wave Israeli flags at Beth Israel, filling me with pride, gratitude, and hope for the future.
Mazal Tov to Beth Israel member, Becky Cherlin Baird, who was honored as a Woman of Valor this year. This meaningful tribute recognizes her strength, compassion, and the profound impact she has made through her leadership and dedicated service to the San Diego community.
Iris, Emma, and Stephen Halpern
We have lived in Carmel Valley for 30 years. Emma was raised at Beth Israel, starting her Jewish education in kindergarten, and had her Bat Mitzvah there on October 10, 2010. Traveling internationally remains a passion for all of us. Steve is a retired entrepreneur and educator, active in San Diego’s music community—performing on piano and accordion at Sharp Hospital, the Museum of Making Music, a bluegrass group, and a jazz ensemble. Emma is a multilingual UX designer, and Iris contributes to the San Diego community in various roles. We have also been “dog parents” since 1996; our current 14-month-old Golden, Bentley, is training to be our next therapy dog. We have renewed our membership at Beth Israel as part of our family’s identity and look forward to making new connections and friendships.
Jenna, Victor, and Roger Hoang
Jenna, Victor, and their 3-year-old son, Roger, live in the UTC area. Originally from the Philadelphia area, they are proud Eagles fans! Victor’s career in the Air Force and medicine has taken the family to the Mississippi coast, San Antonio, and now La Jolla. They will be in San Diego for just one year and appreciate the welcoming Beth Israel community. They wanted to find not only a wonderful preschool for Roger but also a place to nurture Jewish values in their interfaith family. Jenna is excited to volunteer with the Hunger Project.
Joyce and Neal Jacobs
Joyce and Neal are thrilled to be back in San Diego after spending four years in Austin, Texas. Living in Carmel Valley, they love the arts, traveling, and spending time at the JCC. Their daughter and her family are also members, and they value the sense of community and inclusiveness that Beth Israel provides.
Kaley Levitt, Alan Deicas, Lyla Lichtman, Monty Deicas, Asher Lichtman, and Stevie Deicas
Kaley and Alan, along with their four children, recently became a blended family in Del Mar. Alan was born in Mexico and raised in San Diego, while Kaley, born and raised in San Diego, has South African roots. The family looks forward to meeting new friends and participating in Beth Israel’s youth and family programs.

The Levin family, Scott, Mary, and their sons 13-year-old Conner, 11-year-old Lee, and 7-year-old Seth, live in Scripps Ranch. With a lively household and several beloved rescue pets, they are passionate about animal rescue. They enjoy weekends at the beach, family travel adventures, and cheering each other on at sports games. The Levins were drawn to Beth Israel for its warm and inclusive community, and they’re excited to take part in family programs, holiday celebrations, volunteer opportunities, and youth activities.
Jessica Lipsky and Sydney Lipsky Palmer
Jessica and her daughter, Sydney, live in San Diego. Originally from New York, Jessica is a marine biologist, and Sydney was born and raised in sunny San Diego. They both share a love of nature, animals, and the beach. Sydney, an avid soccer player, is in 7th grade and has started her Hebrew school journey. The family immediately felt at home at Beth Israel, drawn by the congregation’s warmth and welcoming spirit. Sydney is excited to prepare for her Bat Mitzvah with Beth Israel’s teachers and students.
Leslie Rubin
Leslie Rubin has lived in Carlsbad for the past 46 years. She enjoys travel, theatre, taking walks along the coast, and playing Pickleball. Leslie loves the sense of community at Beth Israel and the beauty of the services. She is returning to Beth Israel after 38 years and found, after attending a social hour and service, that it was something she truly missed.
Rachel, Zach, Jack, and Violet Schlagel
Rachel, Zach, and their children Jack and Violet live in Clairemont. They enjoy traveling when they can and took their biggest trip yet to Australia last year. They were drawn to Beth Israel because it felt warm and welcoming. Their daughter Violet is excited to begin religious education and prepare for her Bat Mitzvah in the future.
Chelsey, Aaron, Marley, and Sadie Smith
Aaron and Chelsey Smith are happy to join the Beth Israel family with their 8-yearold daughter, Marley, and 5-year-old daughter, Sadie. Aaron is an interventional radiologist from New Jersey, and Chelsey is a rheumatologist from Los Angeles. They have lived in San Diego for 10 years and call Pacific Beach home. The family is excited to deepen their connection to the Jewish community and enjoys live music and traveling to visit family. One fun fact: they were in a band together in medical school called "Glassfoot," inspired by an incident where Chelsey dropped glass on her foot.

Known for his quick wit, big heart, and love for Israel, Galel brings humor and chutzpah wherever he goes. A Beth Israel preschool alum, the synagogue feels like home. While not counting down the days to his Bar Mitzvah, he has worked hard to learn his blessings and Torah portion. For his Mitzvah Project, Galel is supporting an Israeli nonprofit helping people with PTSD, inspired by the events of October 7th.
