Dear Friends,
TRULY FEELING THE importance OF gratitude AND appreciation
As the Festival of Passover approaches next month, I started to think about “journeys” – specifically those we have traveled together these past few years. Whether be it by one’s bedside, under the chuppah, in prayerful moments together at services, advocating for justice in Washington, DC, or traversing the land of Israel, each journey has and continues to offer profound takeaways, for which I am personally grateful.
I am currently reflecting on a journey I shared with a number of you this past month, where teens and adults from Beth Israel joined with our friends from the First United Methodist Church here in San Diego to wander into the midbar (the wilderness): in our case, a rural community in the mountainous region in the Dominican Republic. Much like our ancestors, we were transformed along the journey. While we, modern-day descendants of Moses and Miriam trek by plane and bus, our call to covenant, responsibility, and action were laid before us, as we entered into this week-long cross-cultural experience.
Many elements of our recent experience remind me of some of the takeaways from a recent Torah portion out of the Book of Exodus. The portion begins with the command to kindle the ner tamid, the lamp in the Tabernacle that is to burn continually. In the Midrash, the Rabbis compared the light from the lamp to the study of Torah: "See how the words of Torah give light to one who studies them. . . those who study Torah give forth light wherever they are. It is like one standing in the dark with a lamp in his hand; when he sees a stone he does not stumble, neither does he fall over a gutter because he has a lamp in his hand, as it says, 'Your word is a lamp to my feet, a light for my path' (Psalms 119:105). . . . What is the lamp of God? The Torah, as it says, 'The commandment is a lamp, and the teaching a light'.” (Proverbs 6:23). (Sh'mot Rabbah 36:3).
Throughout the week in the DR, the words of Torah were woven into our daily actions as we interacted with community members there. From loving our neighbor, not standing idly by…justice, justice, shall you pursue….do not put a stumbling block before the blind. These teachings guided us throughout our time there, as we get to live them through our actions.
Many of us are aware that our community is surrounded by affluence, emphasizing a critical reason to engage to understand and experience, first-hand, how 80% of the world’s population lives. Bridges to Community (the NGO that supports this annual mission) charges its participants to create a world where basic needs are treated as
human rights: shelter, nutrition, education, healthcare, and employment. On a Jewish level, the synergy between Bridge’s mission and Torah values is organic, and together become the foundational blueprint for this experience – v’ahavta l’recha kamocha – to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Lev. 19:18). Throughout our trip, participants work tirelessly to meet our faith-based goals by living in materially poor communities and working on sustainable community development projects.
During the exchanges we have nightly, we get the opportunity, not only to reflect on the powerful experiences had that day (building and interacting with the local community), but also learning to translate this new-found language into that which is at the very heart of our tradition: to live our Judaism through action, to “walk the talk” through our hands and hearts.
I have had the privilege to partake in this immersive journey for two decades, and have witnessed participants return to the states transformed. And the long-term effects on our young people have been far-reaching. We have found that this social justice experience inspires them to take action at home and remain valued and active members of our youth and congregational community. Some have even noted that what makes this mission unique from other local and regional volunteer opportunities is a mandated “healthy detachment from technology”: limited cells phone usage, no texting, no internet – a time to truly appreciate and be grounded in the actions of the day – as one student noted: “…a time for gratitude without distraction”.
For me, as a rabbi and teacher of Torah, it has offered numerous teachable moments: to stress the importance of gratitude and appreciation…. not to return home and feel guilty about our blessings in life. Rather, we should count those blessings for good.
On our trips, we live amongst the poor in their neighborhoods. Together we share our food, our thoughts, our laughter, and our dreams. We leave changed forever.
In a world that too often feels filled with pain and hatred toward the other, we are reminded through Pirke Avot, the Ethics of our Fathers: “B'Makom She'Ein Anashim Hishtadel Li'hiyot Ish", in a place where there is no humanity, we must strive to be human. (2:6)” Our recent experience brought us in touch a bit closer to this mandate. Next year, I hope you can join us and experience much of the same.

SPRING 2024 / 5784 3 RABBI’S MESSAGE
By Dan Jones
IT HAS BEEN MY honor AND privilege
For those of you who know me, you know I’m not often at a loss for words. As I sat down to write what will be my last BIQ article as the President of the Board of Directors of Beth Israel – I found myself with an odd case of writer’s block. I’m a person who thrives on the idea of always looking and moving forward. Being in this moment when I have an opportunity to reflect, may be a little out of my comfort zone.
Much has happened in the three years that I’ve been honored to serve as the President of our community. At times, it feels like it was just a few weeks ago that Kim Carnot (our immediate past president) passed the gavel to me. At other times, I feel all the hours, days, and miles. What remains constant for me is a strong sense of gratitude to all in our community who have lifted me up and enabled me to do the work I’ve done. I feel a strong sense of pride in the work that our staff and lay leadership have set in motion and in some cases completed.
When I became President in May of 2021, we were still navigating our transition out of the complete and total lockdown of the COVID pandemic. Kim Carnot had served as our President during an unprecedented time, and I can’t imagine a better lay leader to have guided us through the darkest of those days. We were making decisions every week (and sometime every day) on how we would adjust and evolve our operations to best meet the needs of our community both physically and spiritually. We didn’t get everything correct, but we had more successes than missed opportunities. Our staff and clergy went above and beyond to hold our community while they made their way through the same pandemic challenges and fears that all of us where facing.
As our world re-opened and we began to enjoy the normalization of our synagogue activities, we were able to open up our bandwidth and begin to once again look towards the future. I was privileged to join in this opportunity.
At a breakfast in early 2015, Mitch Siegler first asked me to join the Board of Directors; I told him that I wasn’t very interested in the idea. He appealed to two things to change my mind: my sense of duty towards the Jewish people and my interest in strategic thinking. His appeal obviously worked as I’m currently tracked to finish ten years of Board service in May of 2025. We had hoped to endeavor into a process of Strategic Planning during the
Carnot Presidency, but this was postponed (like so many other things) due to COVID. In the Summer of 2021, under the leadership of Co-Chairs Keving Berkowitz and Sari Hartman and the guidance of Lesley Mills and Rabbi Nevarez, we were able to begin this work. The work done by the excellent team they assembled and the feedback of our community resulted in the creation of our Seven Strategic Commitments. These Commitments have given us a tool to reflect on our ongoing and future processes as well as giving us a lens with which to see the future directions of our congregation.
In late 2022, we began to consider the future of our Clergy Suite. Our beloved Rabbi Cantor Bernstein was looking ahead and beginning to imagine what her future retirement could look like. As we helped her plot her course to become our first Cantor Emerita and shift into a part-time role as one of our Rabbis, we also had an opportunity to consider the role of our future Cantor. Under the guidance of a special task force led by Andy Mayer and Buddy Voit, we took a deep dive into the musical needs of our community. Through research into not only our needs but the greater trends in the musical efforts of Reform Judaism also, they were able to clearly identify our community wants and needs for our future Cantor. They also engaged in countless conversations within our community to hear from our membership and staff in their own words – their hopes, aspirations, and dreams for this key position in our clergy suite. Based on this work, Andy and Buddy formulated a strong recommendation, that our own Rabbi Jeremy Gimbel was an incredible internal candidate. This aligned with Rabbi Gimbel’s own personal growth track and career aspirations. Rabbi Gimbel felt so strongly about his path into the Cantorate, that he carried his full-time role as our Associate Rabbi while at the same time attending Cantorial School. He engaged in both tasks with such grace, concentration, and aplomb – that there was no lessening in effort to either task. At times it seemed that he must have had a clone of himself to be so present in both efforts. I am grateful to all who were involved in this process and look forward to celebrating his graduation from Cantorial School and his assumption of his role as our next Rabbi Cantor in July of this year. With the continued guidance and mentorship of Rabbi/Cantor (soon to be Cantor Emerita) Bernstein, Rabbi (and soon to be Cantor) Gimbel will be set up for success for many years to come.
4 SPRING 2024 / 5784 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
We will continue to grow and evolve our Clergy Team thanks to the successful work of our Assistant Rabbi Search Committee spectacularly led by Robyn Spiegel. Her committee reviewed over twenty applicants and extensively interviewed over ten candidates to help find our next Assistant Rabbi who will be joining our team in July.
While the planning for our Capital Campaign has been in the works for over a year, we are now entering into our work in earnest. The horrors of October 7th and the events that followed and continue to unfold, gave a pause and shift to our planning – but now we must move forward. Building for the Future is a comprehensive effort that accomplishes three crucial goals for our community. It allows us to maintain and refresh our twenty-two-yearold campus and keep it the world class facility it was built to be. It adds to our endowment to help “future proof” us against the march of time, the evolution of unknown needs, and the natural degradation of our campus over time. It gives us the opportunity to add an incredible feature to our campus – a progressive Reform Mikvah. Our clergy have identified the addition of a Mikvah as a critical need of not only our own community, but the greater progressive Jewish community of Southern California. Beth Israel has always aspired to be the central address for all things Jewish in San Diego and the potential construction of the Rabbi Cantor Arlene Bernstein Mikvah and Education Center help us continue that aspiration while also creating a lasting legacy.
I will not be President when our Capital Campaign successfully concludes towards the end of 2024 or early 2025, but I know that President Elect John Lefter will the ideal leader to see these efforts through. For those of you who don’t yet know John, he is an incredible leader in our lay leadership structure. A member of our Board of Directors since 2016, in addition to serving as our Treasurer, John has served on multiple committees including but not limited to: Finance, Outreach, Membership & Engagement, Strategic Planning, and Rabbinic Search. I know that John will be the leader we need, and I look forward to the ingenuity, optimism, humility, and grace that he will bring to that role.
It has been my honor and privilege to do my best to lead our community for the last three years. I will thank them many times over the coming months, but my partners in leadership: Executive Director Lesley Mills, senior Rabbi Jason Nevarez, the staff and Board of Congregation Beth Israel should take the credit for whatever accomplishments can be attributed to my term. The collaboration I have enjoyed with all of them helped make the heavy lift of Board leadership a privilege and not a chore.
Take good care,
Dan Jones

LEE & FRANK Z”L GOLDBERG
Lee and Frank z”l Goldberg joined Beth Israel in 1967. Their children and grandchildren grew up in the congregation, and the family celebrated countless lifecycle events at Beth Israel. The Goldbergs are the embodiment of l’dor v’dor—from generation to generation. Their exceptional philanthropic commitment to Beth Israel was recognized when The Lee and Frank Goldberg Family Religious School was named for them.
Lee and Frank z”l exemplify all that the Carl M. Esenoff Memorial Award represents. Throughout their almost 70 years of marriage, the couple were actively involved in the San Diego community. From the San Diego Opera to Seacrest Village, San Diego State University to Moores Cancer Center and Words Alive (to name just a few from a very long list), their support and leadership have been felt throughout San Diego. The couple’s commitment to making an impact is captured in words they included in their Book of Life Statement: “We have learned that it is not what you gather but what you scatter that matters.”
THE CARL M. ESENOFF MEMORIAL AWARD FOR EXTRAORDINARY COMMUNITY SERVICE
The prestigious Carl M. Esenoff Award was established in 1987 by the Board of Directors of Beth Israel in recognition of the lifelong dedication of Carl M. Esenoff, the first recipient. Despite being recognized as one of San Diego’s outstanding civic, professional and communal leaders, it took three trips to persuade the humble leader to accept the inaugural award. Recipients of this unique honor are outstanding individuals who maintain a meaningful membership in the congregation and have been active in, supportive of, and demonstrated leadership in the synagogue and the larger San Diego community.

NATE NEUSTADT
Empowering Youth Voices Against Antisemitism
Being selected to speak at the March for Israel on the Washington Mall was a surreal moment for Nate Neustadt, a high school student with a passion for activism and community engagement. Surrounded by nearly 300,000 participants, Nate felt honored to represent his peers and make a difference in the fight against antisemitism.
Standing before the vast crowd at the March for Israel, Nate was overwhelmed with a sense of awe. As he gazed upon the sea of people and the iconic Washington Monument in the distance, he realized the magnitude of the moment. Nate knew it was an experience he would cherish and share with future generations.
Through his speech, Nate aimed to inspire other teenagers to speak up, be proud of their identity, and take action against antisemitism. He shared his own efforts, including spearheading fundraisers and advocating for Jewish students' rights in his high school. Nate's message emphasized the importance of education and empowerment in combating hate.
As a Kenneth Leventhal StandWithUs intern, Nate received the Shield of David Award for his outstanding contributions. Speaking at the annual gala in Los Angeles, he highlighted the role of education in countering hate and shared personal experiences that shaped his activism. The internship provided Nate with valuable skills and knowledge to confront antisemitism and advocate for accurate representation.
Looking ahead, Nate is committed to continuing conversations for better understanding and representation of Jewish culture and identity. He plans to study security policy and Arabic at George Washington University's Elliot School of International Affairs, with the goal of working towards stabilizing the Middle East. Nate recognizes the importance of cultivating dialogue and fostering breakthrough agreements to effect positive change.
Nate credits his family for instilling in him a sense of responsibility and activism. Raised in a household where open discussions about politics and current events were encouraged, Nate learned the importance of speaking up for what he believes in. His connection to his Jewish identity and community, particularly Beth Israel, provides him with strength and resilience in the face of adversity.
For Nate, being Jewish means being part of a resilient people who support each other in times of need. His deep connection to Israel, evident from his Bar Mitzvah there and subsequent visits, fuels his determination to contribute to its rebuilding efforts. Nate's journey is a testament to the power of youth activism and the importance of standing up against hate and discrimination.

NER TAMID CIRCLE
JACKIE AND CHARLIE MANN
Our path led us to Congregation Beth Israel in 1986 as a newly engaged couple leading the lives of busy young professionals. We both grew up in Los Angeles. Charlie’s family was deeply involved in Culver City’s Temple Akiba synagogue and its fantastic youth program. We felt being active Jews in San Diego was going to be an important part of both of our lives. We were married in 1987 by Beth Israel’s Rabbi Coskey along with two family rabbis.
We spent many years struggling to build relationships and integrate into the Beth Israel community. Our two sons, Ian and Thomas, both attended the Lee and Frank Goldberg Family Religious School and celebrated their B'nai Mitzvah with the congregation. Ian was a Madrich. In 2007 we joined Cantor Bernstein on Beth Israel’s youth & teen choir trip to Israel. The experience with the families who went was a milestone in our involvement with the synagogue. Many of the Israel trip participants have gone on to become board members, lead committees (from Rabbi Search to WBI), and continue to play so beautifully at services as the Chai band.
In 2012 Jackie had her Bat Mitzvah through the adult education program, allowing her to fulfill a goal she did not have the opportunity to participate in at age 13. With her temple friends, Jackie hosts an annual Hanukkah party for the Jewish community of Point Loma, regardless of temple or religious affiliation.
We have been members of Beth Israel for 38 years! We attend services often and delight in the beautiful music and the synergy of Rabbi Nevarez together with Rabbi Cantor Bernstein and Rabbi Gimbel. The musical services bring us calm and joy. We feel connected with the community and the clergy and are glad Beth Israel can be a Jewish mainstay of our lives. The live music from the Chai band greatly enriches the services and brings warmth and joy to the songs and traditions.
We feel honored to be able to contribute to the temple and its mission. By including Beth Israel in our estate plan, we hope to make it possible for other members, both new and old, to discover the same depth of richness and Jewish experience Congregation Beth Israel contributes to our lives.

WRAPPING ISRAELI SOLDIERS IN WARMTH AND HEARTS IN OUR DECEMBER DRIVE

• We've installed a map of Israel where preschoolers and their families place heart stickers to mark the locations of their family members and friends
