Dear Friends & Neighbors, Welcome to our November issue of Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors. This month we celebrate the November holidays of Veterans Day, to honor the service of active and former military, and Thanksgiving, with features that remind us to be thankful for all that we have. But November also kicks off with a dark reminder of something we’re losing this month - more daylight!

We’ve been seeing less daylight every day since mid-June but we lose a full hour of daylight when Daylight Savings Time slides into hibernation on Sunday, November 5th. With clocks turned back an hour, most of us are now leaving for work, and driving home from work, in the dark. We will be for a few months before beginning to notice an inch of daylight has been returning everyday until March when Daylight Savings returns to point our hopeful eyes toward Spring. But first, Fall colors burst, then winter’s worst? Hopefully not before the holidays.

As I write this I’m watching a Phillies playoff game, reminded of writing the welcome to last January’s issue while watching the Eagles play for a necessary win to get closer to the Super Bowl. That January issue was sent to the printer in December. I knew by the time it arrived in homes in January, we’d all know if the Eagles would be playing in Super Bowl LVII. This is what I shared: “Here’s hoping new year happiness continues through to next month when we may be rooting for our Eagles in Super Bowl LVII. That kind of success will push all our teams further, with the Phillies and Union just warming up, the sparks may ignite all our professional sports teams in 2023. We can only hope. Go Eagles!”

That cautious hope was rewarded, although not rewarded enough. So, while watching this dramatic Phillies division championship game while writing this (weeks before you’re reading this, and being Phanatically slowed down), I'll again swing for the fences with hope for another playoff payoff. By the time you’re reading this November issue of Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors in print or reading online at: www.TheNEMag. com, we'll all know if the 2023 World Series is a part of Phillies history. Then, we'll focus on our Eagles driving some unfinished business in the new year.

For now, I’m thankful for this great November issue I know you’ll enjoy.

Latin Club (where they practice Latin skills through games and activities), Math Counts (a chance to learn math outside of regular class and potentially become a member of the Math Club Team) and Senate Club (where students get to decide which school events such as dress down days and spirit weeks, to put into action).

Jordyn supports many middle school service projects, which include donating items, providing baked goods and helping to promote the projects, with high interest and compassion.

“Seen as one of our kindest students, Jordyn often befriends our new middle school students and makes sure they know where they are going. Overall, she is always so thoughtful and considerate of others as she balances her service, academics and athletic commitments,” shared Baldwin’s Communications Manager Lisa Algeo.

Taking a special interest in foreign languages, particularly French and Latin, Jordyn enjoys learning German with her mom. She enjoys practicing squash with her dad. Jordyn really likes doing all kinds of crafts, but particularly diamond painting, along with designing and creating greeting cards. She is also a big Duke University basketball fan.

Christopher and Cindi Young: Service to Our Country and Our Community

P

lease join your fellow Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors this November in recognizing and celebrating our brave servicemen and women and their families for National Veterans and Military Family Appreciation Month. We would like to take the time to honor them and their commitment and contributions in support of our military and our nation.

This month, we are honored to introduce you to Christopher and Cindi Young, a couple whose service to their country and community is admirable and inspirational.

Chris is originally from Elmer, NJ, where he lived with his parents, older brother and younger sister. He went to Arthur P. Schalick High School in Pittsgrove, NJ, where he played football. After graduation, Chris earned two associate degrees from the Community College of the Air Force, one in Aviation Maintenance Technology and one in Metals Technology.

Chris began working for the Defense Logistics Agency as an Industrial Specialist. “Our team would travel all around the US and evaluate wartime capabilities of various factories,” he said.

“Our reports of the industry capabilities we evaluated would then be sent to Congress for review.”

“I enlisted in the Air Force in August 1980 on the delayed Enlistment program. I left for Basic Training on January 20, 1981, the day President Ronald Reagan took the oath of office as our 40th President of the United States of America and the Iran Hostage Crisis ended,” Chris explained. After graduating from Basic Training, he was sent to Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, TX, to attend school to become an Aircraft Crew Chief. Upon graduation, Chris was stationed at McGuire Air Force Base in Wrightstown, NJ, where he worked as Crew Chief in the 438th Organizational Maintenance Squadron on C-141A and C-141B Aircraft from 1981-1985.

In 1985, Chris became an Air Force Reserve Technician in the 514th Field Maintenance Squadron as an Aero Repair Technician. The Aero Repair shop did all the heavy maintenance on the Aircraft, from changing the landing gear to operating the flight controls. “I was assigned to the 514th Aircraft Generation Squadron as a Flightline Expeditor responsible for all the maintenance of 13 C-141B Aircraft, then promoted to a Production Superintendent responsible for the

Maintenance of 26 C-141B Aircraft,” Chris said. “Then I was promoted to the Red Aircraft Maintenance Unit responsible for 120 Maintainers responsible for the maintenance of 26 C-141B Aircraft before being promoted again to Fabrication Flight Chief in the 514th Maintenance Squadron, overseeing the sheet metal shop, non-destructive testing shop, plastic shop, machine shop, and survival equipment shop.”

Chris quickly rose through the ranks and was selected as the 514th Maintenance Squadron Superintendent, overseeing the Fabrication Flight, Aero Space System Flight, Isochronal Maintenance Flight, Aerospace Ground Equipment Flight, and the Avionics Maintenance Flight. He only spent two months in this position before being named the 514th Maintenance Group Superintendent. “My favorite position in my career was the 514th Maintenance Group Superintendent,” he remarked.

maintenance squadrons, executing an over eighty-million-dollar budget in support of six hundred fifty-plus Traditional Reserve and Air Reserve Technicians.”

Chris’ Air Force career sent him around the United States, St. Croix, Germany, Spain and Puerto Rico. After 9/11, he deployed to Qatar as a Production Superintendent for nine KC-10 Aircraft which flew several missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Chris’ wife, Cindi, is one of eight siblings who grew up with her brothers, sisters and parents in Bala Cynwyd. She attended St. Bernadette’s in Drexel Hill, then St. Matthias in Bala Cynwyd before graduating from Merion Mercy Academy, where she was active in student government, the theater department and the tennis team.

Cindi’s exemplary grades and determination earned her appointment to the United States Military Academy, which she attended for two years, from 1981 to 1983. “I thoroughly enjoyed my time at West Point, but all cadets graduate with a degree in Engineering,” she explained. “My plan was to be an Army doctor and minor in organic chemistry – that was a double fail”! Cindi said that as much as she thought medicine was her calling, she hated chemistry and disliked engineering even more. “I have limited spatial skills, and the one engineering basics class I took was a disaster,” she explained. So, it was onto a new path for Cindi in California. She worked by day and attended Golden Gate University at night, graduating summa cum laude with a BS in Accounting in 1985.

“I passed the CPA exam in 1986 in California and returned home to work at Price Waterhouse in Philadelphia,” Cindi said. “After six years, I joined The Rubin Organization (now PREIT) working on commercial real estate projects such as the Mellon Bank Center and the Bellevue.” Cindi said while working there, she caught the real estate bug and began a career in commercial real estate with COMPASS Management & Leasing, then WP Realty. continued on page 10

So, how does a girl from Bala Cynwyd meet an Army guy from New Jersey? On the dance floor, of course! “One of my passions is dancing,” Cindi said. “It was the early 1990s, and having never listened to country music, a friend of mine convinced me to go to the American Cowboy Company (ACC) in Cherry Hill, NJ.” There was line dancing and Country Western couples dancing, and Cindi was hooked. She soon became a regular, dancing four to five times a week, and began performing on their dance team. “What I didn’t know then was that a fellow dance team member, Dan, worked with Chris on the flight line,” Cindi explained. Dan was helping Chris learn how to dance and told him there was this girl he was convinced was a great match. “So Chris went to the ACC that night expecting to meet Dan and be introduced, but Dan was a no-show.”

Cindi said that she and Chris met about halfway through the night and started chatting. She laughed when she admitted, “I actually “fake” carded him since I didn’t think he even looked 21, let alone 32!”. Chris and Cindi hit it off, and when Chris went to work the next day, he told Dan that he had met someone, and Dan said, “That’s the girl I wanted you to meet!”. Cindi said that was almost 30 years ago, and the rest is history.

They married and settled down in Ardmore. Chris had three children from a previous marriage, Tiffany, Brittany and Shelby, and he and Cindi welcomed two children of their own, Logan and Sarah. After a few years, they relocated to Rosemont, then took on a home renovation in Gladwyne and moved Cindi’s mother in with them. “Eventually, my mother started having trouble with the steps in our home, so we decided to look for something more suitable and found the perfect spot in Newtown Square,” Cindi said. “It’s a cute story. I took our youngest daughter, Sarah through the open house, and a Harry Potter movie was playing on the TV downstairs, so she then referred to it as “The Harry Potter House”.

These days, Chris and Cindi are as busy as ever. Chris retired from the Air Force after a decorated 30-year career and is currently the Deputy Fire Chief of the Newtown Square Fire Company. “I love serving the community and helping people when they are possibly experiencing the worst day of their lives,” Chris remarked. The Fire Company is like a second family to me, very similar to how my Air Force family was, which has helped me transition into civilian life.”

Cindi retired from full-time work to care for her mother in 2013 and has since gone back to working part-time and volunteering in the community.

Aside from dancing, reading is another of Cindi’s passions.

“I have been a volunteer at the Newtown Public Library for the past ten years,” she said.

“At first, I helped at the front desk, then I took over the stocking and merchandising of the lobby book carts.” Now Cindi is the Co-Chair of the library’s semi-annual book sale that is held each spring and fall.

“I currently work at the Domestic Abuse Project of Delaware County helping to prevent domestic violence and empower victims/survivors to move towards self-sufficiency,” she explained.

“We offer a 24-hour hotline, safe house emergency shelter, counseling, advocacy and legal services.” Cindi is especially proud that her daughter Sarah has recently joined the staff as a full-time Safe House Advocate. For information visit: www.DAPDC.org.

Cindi also volunteers her time for Meals on Wheels, makes monthly casseroles and collects gently used men’s clothing for St. John’s Hospice through St. Anastasia parish. And when Chris isn’t at the fire station, he is a Krav Maga instructor and will be testing for his Black Belt this month in San Diego. He is also an avid hunter and enjoys taking his grandchildren with him. “I have fond memories of hunting with my grandfather and dad,” he said. “I hope my seven grandchildren will always have special memories of spending time with me.”

Perhaps the most meaningful moment for Chis during this interview was the photo shoot at the Delaware County Veterans Memorial, where he is honored to be a Board Member.

“For me personally, the Delaware County Veterans Memorial is sacred ground. I served a total of 30 years in the United States Air Force. I lost friends during this time serving our Great Nation.

The Memorial is a place for me to be at peace and reflect on those I knew, loved, and lost. I have sat in the rain, and the hot sun at the Memorial, laughing to myself, crying, and praying, remembering these friends. It is hard to explain to my family and non-military friends why I feel the way I do on some days, but being around other Veterans, they just know, and you know they know without having to talk about it.”

aving on electricity during the winter can help you reduce your energy bills and lower your environmental impact.

Here are some tips to help you save on electricity during the winter months: Adjust Your Thermostat: Lower your thermostat setting by a few degrees when you’re at home and awake. For every degree you lower your thermostat, you can save about 1- 3% on your heating bill.

Programmable Thermostat: Invest in a programmable thermostat or a smart thermostat that can automatically adjust the temperature based on your schedule. You can program it to lower the temperature when you’re not at home or when you’re sleeping.

Use Curtains and Drapes: Close curtains or blinds at night to prevent heat from escaping and open them during the day to let in natural sunlight, which can help warm your home.

Seal Leaks and Insulate: Check for drafts around windows, doors, and other openings.

Seal any gaps or leaks with weatherstripping or caulk. Ensure your home is adequately insulated in the attic, walls, and floors. This prevents heat from escaping.

Seal Off Unused Rooms: Close vents and doors to rooms that you’re not using to concentrate heat in the areas you occupy.

Plan for Energy-Efficient Holidays: If you decorate for the holidays, use LED lights and be mindful of energy use when lighting decorations.

By implementing these tips, you can reduce your electricity consumption and lower your winter heating bills while still staying comfortable in your home. E

Upgrade to Energy-Efficient Appliances: If you have old, inefficient appliances like a furnace or water heater, consider upgrading to energy-efficient models.

hake off those winter-weather blues, grab your skates and hit the ice for some fun this winter at Flight On Ice’s Energy Transfer Veterans Memorial Rink. This pop-up winter wonderland right in our own backyard features a fullsize (60’x100’) outdoor skating rink, skate rentals, festive lighting, delicious food and beverages, heated hospitality tents, cozy firepit seating, special events and entertainment for the whole family.

The buzz surrounding the rink over the past two years has been undeniably electric, and the reviews since then have been spectacular, with the rink being voted Best of Delco 2022 and 2023 for Fun Day Family Outing. Season passes and individual online ticket sales have been as brisk as the weather, as many of our Friends & Neighbors gathered in good cheer last season to enjoy the rink and all its splendor.

This month, the Flight On Ice team is just getting started! Their calendar of events will feature a jam-packed lineup of special events and party opportunities. And with the addition of Tired Hands Brewery’s Winter Beer Park, the scene will be even more enjoyable! Jon Schaffer, President of Flight Entertainment, shared his enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, "We are excited to announce that Tired Hands Brewery will keep their already popular outdoor Beer Park open during our skating season.

We are always looking for ways to enhance our guest experience, and we are thrilled that Tired Hands has agreed to join us this season.”

“Through our donations and our new community-partnering educational program last year, were able to help teach younger generations what it means to serve our country.”

A portion of the proceeds from both rink sales and sponsorships will benefit the Delaware County Veterans Memorial Association, located just blocks away from the rink. To date, Flight On Ice has raised over $55,000 for the DCVMA to support the memorial and local veterans in the community.

The donations received from the ice rink were used to start an endowment program for the memorial. This season, they will roll out new fundraising programs to help achieve their goals.

There are a number of sponsorship opportunities available at the rink, including a special educational-focused program that brings groups of school students out to the rink for a private skate session and complimentary refreshments, but more importantly, includes a visit to the Delaware County Veterans Memorial just a few blocks up the road where the students get a guided tour of the Memorial and learn first hand from a local veteran about those who have sacrificed for our freedoms.

Flight On Ice’s location and its mission were made possible through a partnership between those two partners and the Delaware County Veterans Memorial Association (DCVMA).

Jon Schaffer said that the mission of Flight On Ice is to donate a significant portion of their proceeds to that worthy organization and other similar organizations that support veterans.

“We want to help shine a light on our veterans,” Jon explained.

Jon said that local businesses are welcome to sponsor a field trip that they’ve branded their Skip and Skate event, to show their support and commitment to educating our youth. The Energy Transfer Veterans Memorial Rink is located at 4901 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, right next door to Starbucks and Bonefish Grill at the Shoppes at Marville.

A Q &A with Deborah M. Truscello

T

he Law Office of Deborah M. Truscello has been providing legal representation to residents of Pennsylvania and New Jersey for the past 31 years. The office is a full-service law firm providing counsel in all areas of personal injury, work accidents, divorce, custody, support, real estate, wills, estates and social security disability. We spoke with Deborah (“Debbie”) to find out how she became interested in the law and why her clients think of her as a Lawyer-in-Law, aka the family’s attorney.

How did you choose a career in law?

I had a great education at Archmere Academy in Delaware that had a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, which prepared

me really well for college. I went on to Elizabethtown College and was considering Pre-Med, so I enrolled in a lot of science classes. But, when it came time to dissect a cadaver, I realized I could not be a doctor so I shifted gears and pursued a degree in political science, which was pre-law at Elizabethtown back then. I also placed first in a French-speaking legal debate about euthanasia, which earned me a scholarship to study abroad in England. My political science background combined with my speaking and writing skills led to my desire to become an attorney.

What has inspired you to serve the community?

As a lifelong resident of Delaware County, I was inspired by my parents who were very involved in Folcroft where we lived and helped the residents. My mom was a community organizer and my dad was magistrate. He was integral in shaping Pennsylvania’s Magisterial Court system. My parents did a lot for our community, including spearheading the building of a new library in Folcroft when the old one was slated to close. I was always right there by their side as they worked to improve our community. I followed in their footsteps.

Can you tell us about your early career as a lawyer?

I earned my Juris Doctor (J.D.) in 1988 from Capital University School of Law in Columbus, Ohio, and then began my career serving the residents of my hometown of Folcroft and surrounding Delaware County. I first served as a law clerk of the Honorable Judge Vincent A. Cirillo of Pennsylvania’s Superior Court, conducting legal research, preparing bench memos, drafting orders and opinions.The following year, I had the privilege of serving as law clerk to the Honorable Judge Rita A. Prescott, the first woman to become a Delaware County Court of Common Pleas Judge. She was a great teacher and had me work on every aspect of a case, from pre-trial to post-trial and opinion writing for civil and criminal cases. Judge Prescott also

told me how to make it as a woman in law and was instrumental in my decision to establish my general counsel law firm in Media in 1993.

What was it like for you to serve your community as a judge?

My law firm had been running smoothly for a few years, so I seized the opportunity to serve the community from the bench when my father retired. In 1998, I was appointed unanimously by both Democrat and Republican elected officials in Harrisburg to finish my father’s term when he retired. Then in 1999 I was elected by the people as Magisterial Judge covering Folcroft, Tinicum and Philadelphia International Airport.

During those eight years serving in that role, the sheer number and variety of cases added to my legal experience and understanding of the uniqueness of every case and the legal process.

Because of where we were located, we covered cases that not only involved our local police, but also state troopers and customs agents. We handled 7,000–10,000 cases each year, and I am proud to say all with consistency, compassion and equal application of the law.

What has been some of your most memorable work?

As Magisterial District Judge, I developed the juvenile mentoring program to help troubled youths learn compassion and gain self-confidence. The juveniles in my court learned that they would have to answer to their infractions instead of their parents paying a fine. I had them read books about their favorite subject, write letters of apology, bring their school report cards to me, and work at Elwyn, spending time with the physically and mentally challenged youth in our area. I’m proud that my work was successful in greatly reducing the number of repeat offenders. The program garnered bipartisan support.

How would you describe your law practice today?

The benefit of a solo practice is that I have a better bird’s eye view of our cases. I want to make sure decisions are made with the client’s best interests first based upon all of the facts and circumstances surrounding the case and the client. Although it’s a solo practice, I have a vast network of associated attorneys and experts in a wide range of complex practice areas. I also

have a great staff that includes my legal assistants Rosemary, in family law matters, and Mona, in injury cases, who’s been with me for decades. They’re both invaluable. My goal is always to ensure that every client who enters my office gets the best representation possible. In addition to my regular caseload, I take on pro bono work as much as I can for those who can’t afford an attorney and am a passionate advocate for children who suffer abuse. I have had a good amount of education and experience with the topic of abuse.

Your clients think of you as a “lawyer-in-law” or part of the family. What do you think sets you apart from other attorneys in our area?

I often represent generations of families from clients I have.

Part of my repeat business is not just from existing clients but then they recommend their family members for representation also. Many families refer to me as their family attorney. I give my clients my cell number so they know they can get a hold of me anytime for emergencies. I truly care about my clients and I work hard to get them the best possible outcome while being mindful of their wallet. I am a lifelong resident here and want to make our community better by helping serve the community. It’s been that way for 35 years.

Any plans for the future?

I would like to help implement a Juvenile Mentoring Program and continue using my years of experience working with abused children.

he Friday after Thanksgiving is traditionally called Black Friday, the first big day and kickoff of the Christmas gift shopping season. “Big Box” stores see lines of shoppers camping out overnight to ensure first-in-the-door opportunities to buy limited inventory at lowest prices of the year. And the frenzy of online buying on Black Friday at times even slows down global access to the Internet.

Many historians believe that the designation of Black Friday likely originated in our Philadelphia area in the 1960s. It was a term used by traffic reporters on the radio, sharing what they had been told by Philadelphia police and bus drivers who blamed the woes of high traffic volume on the Friday after Thanksgiving on so many people using their day off to kick off their Christmas shopping. But Black Friday was also the term retailers gave to justify the traffic burdens that help them emerge out of the red and into the black for profits over the whole year in just the last month of the year. By advertising to those shoppers looking for best prices of the year, Black Friday became the annual event we now know it to be.

Retailers must advertise heavily at this time of year, right up to Christmas Eve, because they’re so heavily dependent on a

strong Christmas shopping season. And Big Businesses do just that, advertising nearly everywhere and seemingly to everyone, to whip up Black Friday shopping mania. But not all retailers or service businesses have a big advertising budget like big businesses do. What about Small Businesses? Why should we care if Small Businesses cannot compete against Big Businesses?

Small Business owners often live among us. We see them shopping where we shop and eating at the same local restaurants we enjoy, putting their money back into our community while they also employ others who live local to their business. These owners of Small Businesses often share their business expertise with local organizations, and they are frequently the only Sponsors of local events hosted in our community. Small Businesses invest in our community because our hometown is their local business market and, in many cases, it’s also the hometown of our local Small Business owners.

s the holidays get closer, it’s time to start thinking about that long list of gifts that need to be purchased and wrapped. While wrapping paper is the most traditional way to present gifts, think about alternatives that are more interesting as well as environmentally resourceful. No doubt there may be a few things under the tree in wrapping paper, as there’s nothing better than watching a small child rip through the paper to get at their gift. However, you may consider trying a few of these ideas as well and see how your gift recipients respond. It will hopefully be with delight!

Furoshiki is a traditional Japanese cloth-folding technique that allows you to wrap objects of various shapes and sizes in a single piece of cloth.

YouTube videos abound to learn the technique, and your gifts will be both eye-catching and environmentally sound. Add a small card letting your recipient know about furoshiki so that they too might reuse the cloth in the same fashion. Sad Effects of Bad Company

O

n March 28, 1881, 19-year-old Newtown resident Robert Orr left home with a plan. From his father’s farm on the southern boundary of Newtown near Crum Creek, he walked to a neighbor’s property in Edgmont.

There was a horse that he had his eye on. He put a bridle and saddle on, and took the horse, headed for Philadelphia, looking for a man who would give him money for the stolen horse – because that is what he had done. He was a horse thief.

In the days before cars and trucks, a horse was a family’s main source of transportation. For a farmer, it was also a dependable worker to plough fields, and the engine to the wagon that would carry your goods to market and your family to church on Sunday. The theft of such valuable property was a serious offense: A 1780 Pennsylvania law provided that a first time thief was tied to the pillory and given “thirty-nine lashes, well laid on” and had their ears cut off and nailed to the pillory. The second time: more lashes and then branding of the forehead with an “H” and a “T.”

To aid in capture, the Newtown Association for the Detection of Horse Thieves and Recovery of Horses and other Stolen Property Meeting was formed in the 1840s, meeting at the Sign of the Fox Chase. You paid dues,

and essentially it was an insurance policy – if your horse was stolen and not recovered, then the Association would pay for the loss.

With the rise of the automobile, there were Orr was captured more valuable things to steal. The old in Philadelphia and Horse Company was dissolved arraigned in Media.

“Those who were present say it was a pitying sight to see the distraction of the father, who appeared to enter bail for his wayward son, who will be obliged to answer for the crime in the next term of court, and no doubt suffer a term of imprisonment.” The reporter further noted that the son “owes his present disgrace to the fact that he became fascinated with companionship of wild and dissolute young men.”

Fortunately for young Robert, the earlier laws were repealed in 1860, replaced with jail time and fines. I could not find a report of the trial; but did find that he married at age 30, had two sons, and was a dairy farmer in Willistown until his death in 1912 from tuberculosis. He straightened up and flew right.

Here are some tips to help you protect and care for your trees during the winter months: 1. Mulch: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of your trees, but be sure to keep it away from the trunk to prevent moisture-related issues and pests. Mulch helps insulate the soil, retain moisture, and regulate soil temperature.

How Much Will You Need?

H

ow much money do you think you’ll need to retire comfortably? This is an important question that nearly everyone needs to address. How do you estimate how much money you’ll need to retire comfortably?

To start, assume you’re married and that both you and your spouse are 57 years old. You plan to retire in ten years. Over and above your Social Security and any pension benefits you may be entitled to receive – approximately how much money do you think you’ll need to withdraw monthly from your retirement savings (before income taxes) in order to sustain your lifestyle?

Let’s say your additional monthly income need in today’s dollars (after Social Security and any applicable pension) is $3,000. Since you’re planning to retire in ten years, you will need to factor in annual inflation at 3%. You have now determined that your future additional monthly income need will be $4,032, not $3,000 ($4,032 = $3,000 x 1.349 compounded inflation factor). With a future monthly income shortage of $4,032, the annual amount you’ll need to withdraw starting ten years from today is $48,384 ($48,384 = $4,032 x 12 months).

Next, in order to calculate the capital sum you’ll most likely need to accumulate during the next ten years, divide your annual inflation-adjusted amount of $48,384 by 4.5%. A commonly used withdrawal rate used in the financial services industry today is 4.0%. Last year’s research by Morningstar suggested a starting withdrawal rate of 3.8%. The above 4.5% rate is meant to be used only as a guideline, not a hard and fast rule. Based on a 4.5% withdrawal rate, a good ballpark figure of how much you’ll need to retire comfortably is $1,075,200 ($1,075,200 = $48,384 / 0.045 withdrawal rate).

You may want to calculate (or re-calculate) your own number and jot it down on a piece of paper. Is the number you came up with realistic? Are you certain that your withdrawal needs are adequate? Do your calculations need to be adjusted?

You deserve a comfortable retirement. Now that you have a process to determine the capital sum you’ll most likely need in order to retire comfortably, relax and take a deep breath. You can do this! The question is, will you?

In Memoriam: Joseph J. Montgomery

N

ewtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors would like to extend their deepest condolences to the family and friends of Joseph (Joe) Montgomery. Joe dedicated his life to serving our community and many others througout Delaware County.

The news of Joe’s untimely passing on September 29th came as a shock to those who knew and loved him. He was a hometown hero, born and raised in Gradyville, a decorated Boy Scout, varsity athlete and a graduate of Penncrest High School. Joe joined the Edgmont Township Fire Company when he was just 16 years old and served in a variety of roles, including Chief for twenty years. A tribute to Joe and his service was shared on the Fire Department’s Facebook page.

Edgmont Township would like to offer their condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Joseph Montgomery.

Especially those who served by his side at the Edgmont Township Fire Company. Joe will be remembered dearly in the community for his lifelong commitment to serving the Edgmont Township Fire Company. Joe’s big smile, willingness to help others, and commitment to his community will be missed and remembered fondly. He was a friend, an educator, and a brother to all those lucky enough to serve by his side.

Joe also served as a member of the Rocky Run Fire Department.

Their online tribute read: It never gets easier. Yesterday, Delaware County lost a great one. A true leader, educator, mentor, friend, and father. No matter where you encountered Joe, his smile and booming laugh were sure to light up the room. He could tell stories like no other, and he loved sharing his knowledge with others.

Joe was a life member at Rocky Run, having held many positions in the days of Lima, and remained one of our biggest cheerleaders. Thankfully, we have many fond memories and stories of Joe that will keep him with us always.

Most recently, Joe had joined the Delaware County Park Police as a Patrolman. He was a friend, colleague and mentor to many, and fiercely devoted to his family. May he rest in peace. E

Giving Thanks

T

he holiday season is upon us. It’s a season for traditions, from Thanksgiving gatherings and memorable family trips to the perfect gift and the magic of making memories. And even though year after year, we tend to get caught up in all the hustle, bustle and shopping frenzy, at the end of the day, we all agree that the time spent with family and friends is what it is truly all about.

For me, being thankful does not just depend on how much I have. It’s more about what I choose to be grateful for. What sparks my gratitude is an awareness and appreciation for the basic things in life, such as a roof over my head, a friend who cares about me, plentiful food on my family’s table and the beautiful fall foliage.

I'm thankful for hope (most times), that anything I need will come from Him,” he said. “But for things I think I want or don’t want, never knowing what may come, I’m most thankful for my faith in Providence. Thank God!”
