Like many, I am one of those who has set a New Year’s goal to lose a few pounds, be more active and definitely be more present in this life I’ve been given. My 2026 goal for your hometown magazine is simple, but I can’t achieve it without our Reader Leaders. What’s a Reader Leader? Christopher loves teaching because every day presents a new challenge and a new opportunity to learn and grow. His teaching philosophy centers on educating the whole child and reinforcing the idea that character truly counts. He strives to reach students on a deeper level so they understand the value of becoming good people—not just strong students or athletes.

Recently, Chris experienced an unexpected “aha” moment during the school’s annual Boosterthon. Each year, he leads a problem-solving challenge called “Quicksand,” a cooperative game that uses mats, a few simple props and teamwork to move students across the gym without touching the floor. In all his years facilitating the activity, no group had ever advanced beyond level four.

That changed just a few weeks ago when a pair of fifth graders successfully completed the entire challenge. The moment was especially meaningful because Chris remembered one of the students from kindergarten—a once-shy, quiet child who had clearly grown in confidence and ability. Watching the two students accomplish what had always seemed impossible reaffirmed Chris’s belief in the power of character, teamwork and steady personal growth. his month’s Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors featured family is Ed and Pantea Minnock and their two children, Kira and Tyler.

The Minnocks certainly know how to enjoy life! Whether it’s traveling around the globe or welcoming friends and neighbors into their beautiful home, this family is always ready to make memories.

Pantea (pronounced Ponta) lived in many places long before arriving in Edgmont. Born in Iran, she spent parts of her childhood in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, before settling for her longest stretch in Bucks County. Her upbringing fostered adaptability, sensitivity and a comfort with diversity. Her family remains spread throughout the country. Pantea’s younger brother Parham lives with his family in Yardley. Her father lives in Glen Mills, her aunt in Garnet Valley and a cousin in Media. These connections provide an added layer of closeness and community nearby.

Education played a defining role in shaping Pantea, both professionally and personally. After attending several grade schools across different states and countries, she went on to graduate from Neshaminy High School in Langhorne. Her academic path took her to Penn State University, where she earned degrees in Bio Behavioral Health and Psychology before completing both her BSN and MSN at the University of Pennsylvania. The combination of science, compassion and communication that nursing requires felt naturally aligned with who she is.

Today, Pantea is a pediatric nurse practitioner at the Diabetes Center for Children at CHOP, where she has worked since 2008.

Her work fulfills her in every possible way. “I absolutely love what I do,” Pantea said. “I love working closely with children and families, but am equally passionate about program development,

Ed spent his childhood with his parents and his sister in Topeka, Kansas. He attended Bishop Elementary and Topeka West High School. After graduating from Penn State with a business degree in 1997, he spent nearly a decade living and working in New York City and earning his MBA in Finance from Rutgers in 2003. His career eventually led him into consumer banking, and he now works at Barclays in Wilmington. “I focus on credit card portfolios and unsecured lending strategy,” he explained. “I enjoy the fast pace of the work, but especially the challenge of understanding consumer behavior and the patterns that shape modern spending and financial decision making.”

The story of how Pantea and Ed met feels almost destined. Their paths first crossed at Penn State University in the spring of 1994 in a freshman English class. They became friends, then something more, then partners whose shared interests and complementary personalities created a natural and lasting bond. They were engaged in Central Park in December 2001, married in Mahwah, New Jersey in June 2003 and spent their early married life in motion.

Ed and Pantea lived in New York City for nine years, traveled for an entire year, which included visiting 22 countries, settled in Kansas for a short time and moved back to Pennsylvania in the summer of 2008. Their move to Conshohocken was meant to be temporary while they found the right home, and once they discovered Edgmont, they knew they had arrived somewhere special.

When Pantea and Ed moved to Edgmont in March of 2009, they hoped to find a community where they could plant lasting roots, raise their future family and feel surrounded by natural beauty without losing access to the culture and convenience of nearby cities. What they discovered exceeded their expectations. They found a community that reflects their values, embraces newcomers and offers the mix of peacefulness, opportunity and kindness that they now consider central to their daily lives. Although they still seek out travel whenever possible, Pantea and Ed also enjoy following Philadelphia’s sports teams, summer nights at Media’s Dining Under the Stars and the experience of getting to know a place through its people and its atmosphere.

Their life in Edgmont is centered around family and filled with activity. Their daughter Kira, now sixteen, attends Penncrest High School, where she is in eleventh grade. She loves soccer, track, skiing, reading and traveling. She serves as secretary on the teen board for Girls Spark, providing middle and high school girls with

a safe, supportive and empowering environment where they can learn, collaborate and overcome adversity in facing today’s social issues. Her recent induction into the National Honor Society and her participation in language and math honor societies reflect her focus and motivation. “Kira is hardworking, confident, kind and thoughtful,” Pantea said. “She is someone who is studious and strong and a true joy to be around.” Kira recently earned her driver’s license, has plans to attend college and is considering a future career in nursing. continued on page 10

Their thirteen-year-old son, Tyler, is an eighth-grader at Springton Lake Middle School and the kind of kid who moves easily between sports, games and social life. He plays soccer, lacrosse, basketball and golf, and loves snowboarding in the winter. Like his sister, he is a strong student and was recently inducted into the National Junior Honor Society. “Tyler is funny, charismatic, smart and perceptive,” Ed remarked. “He notices things that others overlook and is an excellent gift giver because he always pays attention to what people truly enjoy.” Tyler also loves keeping an eye on the neighbors’ dogs, which has become a meaningful connection to the community.

The Minnocks have created a home that reflects both their personalities and their priorities. Much of this can be credited to Ed, who is known among friends and family as the ultimate DIY enthusiast. “Over the years, he has built his own home office, a laundry room, a renovated basement complete with gym, sauna, wine room and bar, updated living and dining rooms and designed a teenage bedroom for Kira when she turned thirteen,” Pantea said.

Outdoors, Ed created an under-deck living space and a garden.

Family time is treasured in their home. Game nights are a tradition built on competition, laughter and the occasional playful rivalry. Whether it is ping pong, pool, basketball, a board game or a round of four square, the kids and Ed play to win while Pantea plays for the joy of it, even if she rarely wins. Movie nights remain a staple, too. They often introduce their children to films from the past, whether they are classics or cult favorites. Some receive enthusiastic approval, such as the recent viewing of Die Hard as a Christmas movie. Others are far less convincing, which becomes part of the fun.

Travel continues to shape their family life. Each year they take mountain trips for skiing and snowboarding, visit Kansas for the Fourth of July, go on family vacations, both local and international and end summer with a beach weekend before school begins. These traditions help maintain ties with loved ones across the country and around the world. In the summer of 2025, the Minnocks traveled to Italy and Montenegro. In Montenegro, the family volunteered at the first diabetes camp ever held in that country. Pantea collaborated closely with local staff to help launch the program, creating meaningful memories while sharing their time and support.

Their approach to parenting is rooted in perspective and purpose.

They want their children to understand the diversity of the world, appreciate their privileges and learn how to contribute to the well-being of others. Pantea and Ed agreed that their family mottos reflect this balance. They often ask themselves whether their actions or words help or hurt. They encourage one another to follow their heart, trust their gut and use their brain when making decisions.

Above all, they value being healthy, kind, thoughtful and strong.

Life in Edgmont supports those values. Their home near Ridley Creek offers both natural beauty and convenience. They love the hiking trails, parks, fishing spots and access to outdoor adventures. They love being close to Media and enjoying Dining Under the Stars. They appreciate how easy it is to reach major East Coast cities, the airport, the beach or the mountains in just an hour or two. And they have found neighbors who embody the warmth, respect and generational pride that make this community feel like home”.

The Minnocks have lived in Edgmont longer than anywhere else in their lives. It is the place where they built a family, strengthened their careers, created friendships and established traditions that define their identity. They love to travel, but they also love returning to the peaceful roads and open spaces that welcomed them so many years ago. Their hope for the community is simple and sincere. They are grateful for the kindness, diversity and support they have found here, and they are thankful for the chance to raise their children in a place that models the values they hold most dear.

Riding Toward Access: E-Bike Laws, Safety and Etiquette

E

lectric bicycles, better known as e-bikes, are changing the way people move through our communities and trails.

They are not scooters, mopeds or motorcycles. They are bicycles first, equipped with pedals and designed to be powered by human effort with the option of electric assist. That distinction matters. Scooters and mopeds fall under different legal categories, often requiring licensing and registration. E-bikes, by contrast, are regulated as bicycles in Pennsylvania, making them accessible to riders of all ages and abilities.

Pennsylvania law defines an e-bike as a pedal cycle with electric assist that weighs no more than 100 pounds, has operable pedals and is powered by a motor of 750 watts or less. The motor cannot propel the bike faster than 20 miles per hour on its own, and it must shut off when braking. Devices that exceed these limits are not considered e-bikes and may be prohibited on trails or require licensing as mopeds or motorcycles.

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) permits e-bikes on most trails and public-use roads where traditional bicycles are allowed, with exceptions for natural areas, designated hiking trails and routes marked closed to biking. On non-motorized trails, riders must pedal or use pedal-assist; throttle-only riding is prohibited. On motorized trails and public-use roads, e-bikes are generally welcome unless signage indicates otherwise.

Local rules also apply. The Schuylkill River Trail, one of the region’s most popular multi-use paths, enforces a 15-mile-perhour speed limit for all bicycles, including e-bikes. This limit reflects the trail’s heavy use by walkers, runners and families, and it underscores the importance of adjusting speed for conditions and respecting shared spaces.

Age and helmet requirements also matter. Riders must be at least 16 to operate an e-bike on state or local highways. Helmets are required for riders under 12, but safety experts strongly recommend helmet use for all ages. Simply put, helmets save lives.

Safety is about more than equipment. Riders must control their speed, remain visible with lights and reflective gear and avoid distractions such as headphones. Riding defensively—anticipating the actions of drivers, pedestrians and other cyclists—keeps everyone safer. Trail etiquette ensures harmony: Wheels yield to feet, riders announce their presence when passing and everyone stays on designated paths to protect ecosystems.

E-bikes expand opportunities for recreation and transportation, allowing people of varying ages and abilities to enjoy cycling. They reduce reliance on cars, promote healthier lifestyles and connect communities. By following the law, respecting trail etiquette and prioritizing safety, riders ensure that e-biking remains a welcome and inclusive part of our neighborhoods and natural spaces. E

few years ago, I was given an old book on Quaker history.

Inside was the signature of the book’s owner, Randal Pratt.

I immediately thought “Who was Randal Pratt?” Today, with a laptop and the internet, the answer is usually literally close at hand. So off I went, in search of Randal Pratt.

He was born in 1801 on his family’s farm, the 10th of 11 children of David Pratt and Lydia Hoopes, near Goshen Friends Meeting, still standing by the intersection of Rte 352 and Paoli Pike. He no doubt visited his grandfather Pratt’s farm, which is still welcoming visitors today, at the Colonial Plantation at Ridley Creek State Park.

The Pratts moved to Newtown, where Randal’s mother died in 1836. That event cast a pall over Randal’s marriage to Mary G. Lewis of Newtown in 1837, at the Quaker Meeting House.

Randal brought his bride back to a 750-acre farm along Crum Creek, in the northwest corner of Marple Township, where they raised eight children. Randal was industrious: In addition to operating the farm and an adjacent mill, and reading Quaker history (over 900 pages!), he came up with an improvement to a horse rake and patented it in 1856.

Randal died in 1866, at age 64. He is buried near his parents at Newtown Square Friends Meeting. His farmhouse, described in 1920 as “one of Delaware County’s historic homes,” was knocked down in 1931 when a dam was erected on Crum Creek, flooding the entire Pratt farm, to create Springton Reservoir.

Randal, a man of learning, would probably be delighted to know that every time the local residents turn their faucets on, out comes pure fresh water from the reservoir named after his family’s old property, “Springton Farm.” E

Our Nation’s 250th Birthday

P

hiladelphia will turn 250 years old in 2026, and this major milestone offers our Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors an opportunity to celebrate the region’s shared history in meaningful and community-centered ways. Although the national spotlight will focus on the city where the Declaration of Independence was signed, the semiquincentennial belongs to every town and neighborhood that has grown alongside Philadelphia.

Newtown Edgmont residents have a chance to reflect, participate and take pride in the role our area has played in the broader American story.

One of the most enjoyable ways for local families to celebrate is by exploring the historic sites that have shaped our region. Many residents typically visit Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell when entertaining out-of-town guests, but the anniversary offers a reason to experience these landmarks with fresh appreciation.

A short trip into the city can be combined with lesser-known locations that deepen the story, such as Washington Square, the Museum of the American Revolution or the homes and meeting places of early Philadelphians whose contributions often go overlooked. Making these visits as a community, whether through school field trips, neighborhood groups or family outings, adds an extra layer of connection.

If you want to get swept up in the triumph of leaving it all on the field and in the stands, visit Philadelphia in 2026 — home to the FIFA World Cup 26, NCAA March Madness, the MLB AllStar Game and the PGA Championship, right here at Aronimink Golf Club. For Aronimink, the championship is both a nod to

the past and a promise for the future. It underscores the club’s commitment to hosting the game’s biggest moments while honoring its roots. For golf fans, it will be a chance to witness history in the making—on the course and in the larger story of America’s 250th year.

This is the second time Aronimink Golf Club will host the PGA Championship. The first was back in 1962 when Gary Player claimed the first of his two PGA Championship titles. 2026 PGA Championship Director Ryan Ogle is looking forward to the event. He said, “Bringing the PGA Championship to Aronimink Golf Club and Newtown Square this May is more than just hosting a Major. It’s a chance to celebrate a region that lives and breathes sports. With the world’s best players competing on one of golf ’s most premier courses, the 2026 PGA Championship will be a once-in-a-generation moment during our semiquincentennial year for spectators, the community and the game itself.”

Newtown Edgmont, itself, holds its own historical significance that deserves attention during this celebration year. Local historical societies, including the Newtown Square Historical Society and Edgmont Township Historical Society, will expand programming as the anniversary approaches. Residents can explore preserved buildings, take guided tours or attend lectures that illuminate what life in this area looked like when the new nation was taking shape. In many cases, these organizations rely on volunteers, and the semiquincentennial provides a perfect opportunity for residents to lend a hand by helping with events, assisting with archives or simply spreading the word.

Our trusted local historian and author of our History Spotlight’s, Doug Humes shared his thoughts about the significance of 2026 and it’s impact on our community and our future.

“Philadelphia hosted the Centennial Exhibition in 1876, the Sesquicentennial Exhibition in 1926 and the Bicentennial in 1976. In 2026, we celebrate the Semiquincentennial. Across America, we will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

In the Philadelphia area, we have a closer bond to that event and the subsequent celebrations, because they all occurred here.

Philadelphia isn’t just a host city — it’s the keeper of America’s memory. Generations of our families have been involved with those past events. Philadelphia Freedom is something to celebrate - and in doing so, we hope to do what past presidents have urged us to do - pass the torch to the next generation so that there is a new birth of freedom and so that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth. As we honor our past, let’s also reaffirm the duty of each succeeding generation — to build a future worthy of the America our ancestors envisioned.”

Another meaningful way Newtown Edgmont can participate is by embracing the spirit of civic engagement that defined Philadelphia’s early years. Hosting voter education events, organizing town discussions about the future of our community or encouraging volunteerism among residents of all ages can all serve as modern expressions of the ideals that shaped the nation

in 1776. When friends and neighbors gather to serve a shared purpose, they mirror the collaboration and commitment that represented Philadelphia’s earliest milestones.

Community events will no doubt play a large role as well. The Fourth of July celebrations in 2026 are expected to be especially vibrant across the region. Our beloved Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade Committee is hard at work planning an extra special event lineup for the 250th anniversary celebration. Residents can support these efforts by attending local events, volunteering to help them run smoothly or organizing small gatherings in their own neighborhoods to keep the sense of festivities close to home.

Above all, the upcoming 250th anniversary offers a chance for reflection. Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors can consider how the area has changed, what values have carried through generations and what hopes they have for the future. Sharing stories across generations can help younger residents understand the significance of the moment, while older residents may find it meaningful to recall earlier celebrations and community traditions.

Philadelphia’s semiquincentennial is a national milestone, but it is also a personal one for everyone who calls the Greater Philadelphia region home. As our community prepares to join in the celebration, the most important contribution we can make is to participate with curiosity, pride and a sense of community. Celebrating Super Bowl Sunday Bringing Friends & Neighbors Together

T

he countdown to Super Bowl LX (60) is on! Whether you tune in for the game, the commercials or the halftime show, this year’s celebration calls for friends, fun and “fan”tastic food.

The game, in which the National Football Conference (NFC) champion will face the American Football Conference (AFL) winner, will be played on Sunday, February 8th, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA, home of the San Francisco 49ers. The stadium is located approximately 40 miles south of San Francisco. It is named after Levi Strauss & Co., which purchased naming rights in 2013 and has a capacity of 75,000.

The game will air live on NBC and Telemundo, but can also be streamed live through subscription services like Peacock and NFL+. Newtown Edgmont and Media are Ready for Spring!

W

e can’t wait for baseball and softball season to begin! It might be hard to imagine the sweet sounds of spring right now, but they’ll be here before we know it. The birds will be chirping, kids will play outside, and bats will be cracking over at Newtown Edgmont Little League, Newtown Square Petticoat League, Media Little League and Media Softball League.

Boys and girls from all over town are eager to return to the fields.

It’s a long winter of waiting, and players and their families can’t wait to come back to the place they call their second home. Our area Little League fields are truly special spots where kids ages 4 through 12 of all playing abilities learn to develop their love of the game. From Tee Ball to competitive tournament teams, our top-notch community programs offer an ideal environment for players to excel and for families to enjoy their time at the fields.

Player registrations for both programs are wrapping up this month, and plans are underway for player evaluations, team assignments, opening day parades and family-fun special events.

The season will begin in early April and continue through June.

Bringing People Together In Support of Our Newtown Square Volunteer Fire Company

O

ver the past five years, I have had the opportunity to interview families, individuals and groups, sharing stories in our Newtown Edgmont Friends & Neighbors magazine about where they came from, what brought them to Newtown Edgmont and why they love to live and work here. It truly is a special town filled with history, heritage and generosity.

Giving back to our community is important, especially when giving back to the people who selflessly volunteer their time, talents and resources to keep us safe. This past December, our community gathered once again at our favorite hometown spot, Casey’s, for a guest bartending event to celebrate the holiday season and raise funds for our Newtown Square Volunteer Fire Company.

This was the second year for the fundraiser, which was a huge success in its inaugural year. The idea originally began when our Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, Leonard Alteri, and I attended a Newtown Square Business Association (NSBA) happy hour networking event. Being that the two of us are lifelong Newtown Square residents and I serve as the President of the NSBA, it’s safe to say that we know a lot of people.

We got to talking about fun ways to network and raise funds, and I suggested we work as guest bartenders for a night. Mind you, neither one of us had ever stepped foot behind a bar, so the idea was a bit far-fetched. At the very least, we figured we would get a few laughs out of it. Leonard and I agreed that if we were to have such an event, the only place we would want to serve up

We arranged a meeting with Casey’s owner, Pete Crisanti, and after a friendly discussion over the best French Onion soup this side of the Blue Route, the plan was in place. Not surprisingly, Pete graciously agreed to donate 30% of all beverage sales that night toward our cause, but what was surprising was that he was okay with putting us two rookies behind the bar, as long as we were accompanied by three of his best bartenders, of course!

“Thank you to everyone who came out to Casey’s this past Tuesday night. With your support and very generous donor matching dollar-for-dollar,, we were able to raise close to $10,000!

Fundraisers like these are crucial for supporting our volunteers, who rely on community donations to maintain equipment, training, and emergency response capabilities. The money raised will help ensure that the Newtown Square Fire Company can continue to provide essential services and keep the community safe.

It’s wonderful to see local businesses and community members come together for such an important cause.”

The first event was an enormous success, raising over $8,000 for our first responders, thanks to the generosity of our friends, family, community members and a very generous local resident who matched our proceeds, dollar-for-dollar. And much to our surprise, these two bartending rookies worked hard to serve a packed house for three solid hours!

Leonard also shared a message to all who showed up that night:

The fundraiser began promptly at 6pm, when Traci, Karen and Cassidy a.k.a. Casey’s Dream Team, called us back behind the bar.

It was time to get to work, and boy, did we work! By 6:15, the bar was packed, and the drinks were flowing. The crowd continued to grow with each passing hour. We enjoyed great tunes and holiday cheer while folks from the fire com-pany worked the room, collecting additional cash donations.

“To everyone who came to the guest bartending on Tuesday, Sheila and I want to say thank you! Because of your generosity and the extremely generous dollar-for-dollar match by Joanne Berwind, nearly $10,000 was raised for our Newtown Square Fire Company! I thank Sheila Turner-Hilliard, President of the Newtown Square Business Association, for coming up with the idea behind this event. To Pete Crisanti and the Casey’s Newtown Square crew, including Traci, Karen and Cassidy, thank you for allowing us to do this event for our community.

To the members of this amazing community, many of whom just came to drop money in the donation jar, thank you for supporting the Newtown Square Fire Company. And lastly, to everyone who drank a drink that Sheila and I completely butchered, and pretended it was correct, we thank you for allowing our egos not to be bruised.”

To say our 2nd annual event was a success is an understatement.

Reigniting Your Energy Through Movement

anuary often brings a sense of possibility: a blank page, a quiet reset and a chance to ease back into routine. While many people may notice their energy levels feel lower this time of year, it can also be an ideal moment to reconnect with activities that awaken presence, creativity and momentum. One powerful way to do that is by tapping into flow—a state of complete immersion and focus in an activity.

The concept of flow was first introduced by Hungarian American psychologist Mihaly Csíkszentmihályi, a researcher whose work reshaped our understanding of creativity, focus and satisfaction.

Often referred to as the father of flow and one of the founders of positive psychology, Csíkszentmihályi spent decades studying what makes life feel meaningful and deeply engaging. His early research in 2009 led him to the conclusion that “Happiness is not something that happens,” nor is it simply luck or circumstance. Instead, we can cultivate it by taking intentional control of our inner experiences. When people are fully absorbed in what they’re doing— so immersed that time feels different and self-consciousness fades — they enter a state beyond the ordinary. This complete engagement, he argued, unlocks some of the most fulfilling moments available to us as human beings.
