Career Academy of Hair Design has four locations in Northwest Arkansas and a new location in Fort Smith.

Career Academy of Hair Design produces top-performing stylists in Northwest Arkansas By Sarah Haney NWA Democrat-Gazette

C

areer Academy of Hair Design has been providing superior services and offering training to promising stylists since the late 1960s. There are four locations in Northwest Arkansas including ones in Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers, and Siloam Springs, as well as a more recent addition in Fort Smith. The customer base sets Career Academy apart from similar institutions in the area. “The clear distinction is the number of clients we serve,” stated Career Academy of Hair Design President Jim Butenschoen. “We do between 4,000

and 5,000 services a month.” With this volume of customers, students at Career Academy of Hair Design have the opportunity to learn the skills of the trade on actual people. The primary focus of Career Academy is to ensure that the students are completely “salon ready” when they graduate. One of the ways this is accomplished is with the large number of clients the students serve. Another is with many extremely experienced instructors who provide direction with clients. The results from this training are invaluable to students, making them highly sought after by local salons because they are truly ready to

NWA Democrat-Gazette Best of the Best

work and make money. “This is a whole educational experience for the students,” noted Butenschoen. With a very small student to instructor ratio, the stylists at Career Academy of Hair Design receive a high quality training. Training and services offered to the public include hair cutting, styling and coloring, as well as manicures, skin care and cosmetics. A shampoo and cut (men’s or women’s) is priced at $7 and offered at all locations. Full-salon services are offered including facials, microderm abrasion, waxing and chemical peels. “We are also the state’s only CHI partner school,” added Butenschoen. “We offer a

3

full line of CHI products such as flat irons, shampoos, conditioners, and hair colors.” Career Academy of Hair Design has been designated a model program by the state of Arkansas for its high school program. The program is offered to juniors and seniors and enables them to get licensed once they have finished high school. In addition to this distinction, Career Academy of Hair Design has also won Best of the Best four years and is nominated for the fifth time this year. All five locations are open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. More information on Career Academy of Hair Design is available at beautynwa.com.

Relationships, great games pay off for Indigo Sky Casino By Dave Woods NWA Democrat-Gazette

M

elanie Chase said she knows why Indigo Sky Casino is so popular with residents of Northwest Arkansas. “Customer service is our number one priority,” Melanie, the casino’s assistant general manager, said. “We have a lot of long term employees here who have created relationships with our guests that most casinos haven’t. We go above and beyond to make sure that people have a great time when they are here playing.” The staff devote themselves to understanding the needs of Indigo Sky’s patrons, a commitment that allows for a greater level of service. “The biggest thing is that our staff is out there each and every day with our guests,” the 25-plus year casino veteran said. Relationships, Melanie said, are what it’s all about. “The relationship between the employee and the player is so important,” she said. “It is just an extension of our family.” While relationships and anticipating a player’s needs are both important to Melanie, she knows the quality of the casino experience is also dependent on the quality of the gaming floor. Melanie said she will put hers up against any casino around. “Almost all of the games are new,” she said. “We have new cabinets. The floor is up to date, especially on our progressive games. Our game vendors are always providing us new games. We have people go to the Global Gaming Exposition. They are always sourcing out new games and deciding on the new titles they want to bring in.” But, of course, everyone does have

a favorite and the casino staff work to make sure they please as many players as possible. “One of the things I find is that people like television or movie themed games like ‘The Walking Dead,’” she explained. “We always make sure we have those on the floor. Everyone has their favorite. We get asked, ‘When are going to get this or are you going to have this?’ We select a great game mix to please everyone.” The great mix of entertaining slots, table games, bingo and offtrack betting isn’t the only concern for casino staff. People need to eat, drink, be entertained, and maybe find a place to rest their heads following a winning night on the casino floor. Indigo Sky has that covered. “We just expanded the hotel with 127 more rooms,” Melanie said. “So if you don’t want to go home you can stay and close down the bar or play bingo then just pop in and grab a room so you don’t have to go home.” Hungry? Check out the dining options available. “Chef Dell and his team does a great job,” Melanie bragged. “We have buffets every night. We have crab legs buffets. People actually flock here for the buffets. We have live entertainment Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at Indigo Sky and our sister property, Bordertown Arena and Casino, has live entertainment on Friday and Saturday.” Melanie is happy for the support Northwest Arkansas residents show to the casino and the Indigo Sky staff. “I think that if you are looking for fun and great food and entertainment this is the place to be,” she said. “It’s right on the Oklahoma and Missouri line and not far from Northwest Arkansas.”

Ninth annual poll honors NWA’s Best of the Best thousands of votes, these businesses stand among the best in this competitive, vibrant area of Northwest Arkansas and this is why it is one of our favorite publications,” said Dani Beeman, Business Development Manager for the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. This section is packed with photos and articles about the winning businesses, along with a comprehensive list of the winners and the two finalists. “I think that Northwest Arkansas consumers want to recognize those businesses that go above and beyond in service and quality,” Beeman said. “In turn, I see and hear from local business owners who genuinely feel honored and want to show their appreciation for the vote of confidence from their customers.” This achievement deserves celebrating. We recognized our top three finalists at our Best of the Best Gala on Thursday, October 26 at the Metroplex in Springdale. Photos from the event, and a searchable directory of winners, are available online at nwadg.com/best.

It takes a Village Inn to feed a family BY DAVE WOODS NWA Democrat-Gazette

A

lice Walker may be Village Inn’s biggest fan. The longtime marketer has been singing the praises of Village Inn since the family friendly restaurant opened its doors in Fayetteville 20-plus years ago. She understands area residents’ attraction to the place and its sister restaurants in Bentonville and Ft. Smith. “I think it’s because our food is made to order,” she said. “It’s made fresh as you order it and we have an extensive menu. If you bring a family there is going to be something for everyone. We have customers who eat with us every day because of the numerous menu choices. People know what you are going to get is quality fresh food. While the food brings people back, the staff – many who have been with the operation for years – have

NWA Democrat-Gazette Best of the Best

created a Village Inn family. I would put our staff up against any staff in the restaurant business,” Alice bragged. “Carol Gray in Fayetteville knows all of her regular customers by name and if they don’t come in to see her, and if she knows that they are usually there, she makes a phone call to check on them. It’s like a family.” While family is important it’s really all about the food and Village Inn is famous for its wide selection of homemade dishes. “We want our guests to have the best dining experience possible,” she explained. “They reward us by becoming our friends. We have our menu staples, we have quarterly specials and things that are on the menu for a limited time.” And, as Alice pointed out, there is pie. Lots of pie and it’s free on Wednesdays with purchase of an entree. “It’s one of our favorite promotions,” she said. “It’s

9

a favorite of the NWA Democrat-Gazette’s readers as well. We started it back about four years ago. We’ve been lucky enough to have won the Best Pie category in the Best of the Best contest I don’t even know how many years. Were very good at breakfast, but we are even better at our pie selection. It’s a sweet honor.”

Steve’s Plumbing “THE JOGGING PLUMBER” for all of your residential service By Dave Woods NWA Democrat-Gazette

S

teve and Rose Beaver have been running Steve’s Plumbing since 1987. The husband and wife team are proud of the business they built. Steve handles the plumbing and Rose keeps the office and appointments running smoothly. At first a full service plumbing business that did everything in the plumbing world including new constructions, they now concentrate and specialize in residential service. Steve and Rose know what sets the family-owned business apart. “We say what we do and do what we say,” Steve said. “We warranty our work. If you have any problems at all with something we did we come out and fix it. I think that over the last nine years we’ve grown our business through advertising, but what we practice is that the customer is always the number one priority.” Keeping the customer in mind and informed is important to the team at Steve’s Plumbing. “We keep in contact with the customer

all through the day,” Rose explained. “So if we are running behind because a service in front of you goes longer than anticipated we will let you know. We never ask that you leave your work place or quit what you are doing in a hurry. We are going to call you and we’ll give you plenty of time to get home to meet us.” Another thing that is in Steve’s sweet spot is the installation and maintenance of tankless water heaters. Steve’s been to school and had extensive training on their proper installation and upkeep. He knows how to size your house so it’s the right fit. Steve’s not the only person in the field. They have a well-trained and professional staff as well. “They are all very good,” Rose said. “We have plumbers who are going to school and are apprentice which are help to the licensed plumbers. We have journeyman plumbers, which are licensed plumbers in the state of Arkansas. We have insurance that covers your home, and the staff is really dedicated and here to help our customers.”

Walton Arts Center ready to welcome holidays with style

A

Special to NWA Democrat-Gazette

fter almost 26 seasons of bringing live performances of theater, music, dance and other artistic endeavors to the Northwest Arkansas region, the Walton Arts Center is enjoying a new beginning. “We’ve been a fixture in the region for decades, but now we have a new look,” said Jennifer Wilson, Walton Arts Center’s public relations director. “We just had a grand reopening in November, which revealed our new facility and the $23 million in renovations that were made. We’re still committed to bringing the best entertainment to Northwest Arkansas, and this is our first season without construction, so we are excited to fully utilize our facility.” From the best of Broadway to author/comedian Davis Sedaris to Ballet

Walton Arts Center has always been a hub of cultural activities for the region, Jennifer said. “It has been a cultural cornerstone for the community because we’ve always had the commitment to bringing in worldclass entertainment,” she said. “We work with other performing arts organizations in the region to present and create new works, and we are proud to be an anchor of the region’s performing arts culture.” Walton Arts Center’s facilities include two theaters as well as several multipurpose spaces that the public may rent for private events, weddings or meetings. Walton Arts center’s 2017-18 season is just getting started, and there are many shows to choose from, including some special holiday offerings. “We are kicking off the holiday

Arkansas, Jennifer said the flexibility of the renovated complex allows for a great variety of shows. “Baum Walker Hall seats 1,200 people and is great for our larger performances including Broadway shows,” she explained. “We also have Starr Theater, which is a black box theater. That gives us some flexibility with that space for our West Street Live series and our Starrlight Jazz Club series. For both of these series the theater is set up like a music club with cabaret tables in front and then stadium seating in the back. It is also used for many of our children’s shows and creates a theater that is intimate and less intimidating for kids. We have some traditional spaces, and we have some newer spaces that are flexible and allow us accommodate a variety of different entertainers.”

season a bit earlier this year,” Jennifer noted. “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas is our next Broadway musical with eight performances from Nov. 7-12. The musical is based on the famous movie with Bing Crosby that so many people watch as part of their Christmas traditions. Now you’ll be able to see the story come to life on stage.” Another classic family show, Charlotte’s Web, offers performances for the whole family Nov. 17, 19, 25, 26 and Dec. 1-2. For this production, Walton Arts Center is partnering with Bentonville’s Trike Theatre to bring this famous story to life, and it will feature a local cast of kids and adults. “We have a great season, a lot of variety and shows for everyone. This is definitely a season that you don’t want to miss,” she said.

ark Marquess has been in the home building business since 1981. He and his team have built more than 2,000 homes and developed more than 300 lots in Northwest Arkansas. Mark has been able to provide over 2,000 satisfied customers an enjoyable home buying experience. “We’re an affordable home company,” Mark said. “The difference in us and the rest is that we price it with all options in our homes. Our company’s motto is ‘Yes… it’s all included.’ They don’t have to worry about coming in with out a whole lot of options.” Having a home style and design for every buyer’s need and budget is an important part of his business strategy. “We have three different divisions of the company,” he said. “We have

“We have myself and my wife in the ownership of the construction and real estate company. Now, we have our son and my daughter working, too. It’s a company that’s been handed from generation to generation and that’s the success of it. We are hoping that it will go on to future generations in our family.” While Mark has been building homes for decades, Riverwood Homes is a relatively new addition to his portfolio. Opened in 2009, Riverwood homes was created out of necessity. “I was still developing,” Mark remembered. “I got out of the construction side of the business in 2003 and thought I was done building homes. Then the great housing depression hit and we had some subdivisions with no builders left. I had to go back in the building part of it. It’s just where the good Lord wanted me to be.”

our production homes, we have semicustom homes, which start at about 2500 square feet and go to 3500 square feet in our subdivisions. Then we have our custom home division, which are built on the buyer’s lot separate from our subdivisions. They go from about 3000 square feet up to 6000 square feet. We design the home and they pick everything and we in turn build it for them.” Riverwood Homes is truly a regional company, Mark said and he is proud of his companies reputation around the area with subdivisions from Centerton to Bentonville to Rogers to the Fayetteville and Springdale markets. “We’re solely a Benton and Washington County company,” he said. While Marks business introduces him to new faces almost every day, in the office familiar faces surround him. “My mother is the broker of our real estate company,” he said.

Mark’s new company started off in 2009 by building 35 homes. Now, they produce more than 200 a year. A testament to the success and reputation of Riverwood Homes is when a former home buyer brings in a child or grandchild to buy their first home from his company. “Truly the test of time and the compliment is when we have people I sold a home to 25 years ago bring in their grandchild to buy a home from us. We’ve actually got three generations of home buyers out there now. That’s the true test.” The key, Mark added, is quality customer service. “The best take away is that we stand buy any customer that has a problem,” he said. “Whether it’s today or five years later. We are proud of what we do and stand behind what we do.”

Finding fun at Cherokee Casino & Hotel West Siloam Springs not a roll of the dice By Dave Woods NWA Democrat-Gazette

S

hannon Jennings gets excited when she talks about Cherokee Casino & Hotel West Siloam Springs. The longtime casino veteran spent the last nine years getting to know the casino game and what it is that keeps players coming back. “I think the gaming is fun and we also have great service,” she said. “People come here because the they like the service they get. They can have fun. It’s because our employees are number one and we have great people who work here. They always strive to make the players experience memorable at Cherokee Casino.” The appeal of Cherokee Casino & Hotel West Siloam Springs, Shannon believes has a lot to do with location. “We’re right on the boarder of Siloam Springs, Arkansas in Oklahoma and just across the street from Northwest Arkansas,” she explained. “The majority of our

employees actually live in Northwest Arkansas and I think that with the majority of our employees living there that’s how we connect with the residents. We are also residents of Northwest Arkansas. Basically this is our home.” Most days Shannon can be found on her home turf, the casino floor surrounded by more than 1500 machines, 30 gaming tables, a poker room, several bars, live entertainment and multiple dining options. “We have live shows in the SEVEN Bar,” she noted. “We have free entertainment Thursday through Saturday with cover bands, classic rock, country and all of those shows are free. We usually have one big act during the month that draws a really big crowd. But we also have starting to do ticketed events in our Qualla Ballroom.” Comedy shows have been successful at Cherokee Casino and Hotel, too. “Several have been sold out,” she said. “We have comedians from all over the United States and New They

are a lot of Fun.” When you are ready to take a short break from gaming Shannon suggests checking out one of their dining options “We have the River Cane Buffet, which every body loves,” Shannon said. “So many choices… anything from hometown to Italian. We have a Mexican station and an Asian station. We have crab legs on the weekends and amazing desserts at the Sweet Treats Bakery. We have a restaurant called Flint Creek. You can get a great steak there. We also have a late night bar and a late night bar menu. Shannon thinks it’s the fun environment and friendly staff that keep patrons coming back week after week. “The main thing is that we offer a fun environment,” she stressed. “We have a great team. We couldn’t run this place without them. There the ones who make our guests feel comfortable here and keep them coming back.”

Real estate veteran values training, professionalism, customer service above all else By Dave Woods NWA Democrat-Gazette

A

lot has changed in the real estate industry since Doyle Yates received his licenses in 1975. One thing that hasn’t changed, in fact it may be more important than ever, is professionalism and customer service. “We stress that it’s important that you do it right and that you follow not just the law, but a code of ethics, and operate with integrity” Doyle, executive vice president of Coldwell Banker - Harris, McHaney & Faucette in Fayetteville, said. “Professional in the way you deal with the public and the way you deal with fellow REALTORS. The thing to impress on a new agent coming in is that it’s important that you have a good reputation in this business and that reputation is established by the way you conduct your business day in and day out.” Doyle believes that kind of professionalism, attention to detail and customer focused work ethic is what sets

Coldwell Banker - Harris, McHaney & Faucette apart. “The level of expertise is a result of the training and support our agents receive,” he said proudly. “I think that

makes our agents much more confident and the public appreciates that level of competence and expertise in the market and in the type of customer service they receive. Doyle stressed that training is everything. “I think that our training, not only of new agents but the continued training of all our agents is pretty much unparalleled in this market. We continue to introduce and train our agents on new and innovative tools and resources to give them that added advantage in the marketplace. Our agents are very knowledgeable and continue to work on different designations and certifications through the National Association of REALTORS, with a large number of our people certified through the Graduate REALTORS Institute as well as holding designations such as Certified Residential Specialist, and Accredited Buyer Representative. When asked why I believe our agents out-produce most of their counterparts; I say it’s simple, “Our people are well trained and know their craft”, Yates said.

Because of you, we have done it again! We sincerely thank our wonderful customers, for taking the time to vote us Best of the Best Real Estate Company! Without your support we would not be able to do what we love. We remain committed to providing you and your family with the very best customer service in your quest for buying or selling a home.

B

Special to NWA Democrat-Gazette

etter Hearing and Balance Connection continues to provide quality audiology care in Northwest Arkansas including current diagnostic methods for yourself and your hearing instruments, as well as provide options for the highest levels of technology with devices available and selection. With two locations — one at 906 NW 8th St., in Bentonville, and the other at 5 Cunningham Corner, in Bella Vista — Better Hearing and Balance’s professionals realize the need to provide flexibility in treatment for their patients and want to give individuals options that fit their lifestyle balance. Each location is enabled with similar

technologies to best meet your needs and even transition as needed between those facilities. Dr. Key is the primary provider in Bentonville and sees patients Monday through Wednesday, with the office open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Patients are also able to visit the office for supplies

or repair services during these times. Dr. Gretchen Magee, AuD, and Dr. Shawn Key, AuD, are the providers in the Bella Vista location and they are available from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Better Hearing and Balance Connection’s goals are to talk to you about hearing goals and frequented

lifestyle environments so they can select the right hearing aids for you and explain if your goals are reasonable for the environments you are in and the nature of your hearing loss. Drs. Magee and Key are both looking for a consistent hearing solution that will last you a number of years versus a right now solution. Their goal is to provide patients with powerful resources to not only start a hearing journey, but maintain it over a period of time. Call (479) 657-6464 with questions you may have or schedule an appointment at either of the locations. Sassafras Springs Vineyard offers beautiful settings for your celebrations By Sarah Haney Special to NWA Democrat-Gazette

S

assafras Springs Vineyard, located at 6461 E. Guy Terry Road in Springdale, has been serving Northwest Arkansas’ venue and wine accommodations for the past 3 ½ years. As a former winner and finalist in Best of the Best, Sassafras Springs knows that quality matters. With their friendly approach to customer service combined with the relaxed atmosphere of the vineyard, it’s easy to see what sets them apart from the competition. It isn’t uncommon to see a family having a relaxing family picnic anywhere on the 30 acres while a couple

may be having a formal celebration of their anniversary, enjoying a glass of wine under the covered patio next to the fireplace. Currently, Sassafras Springs Vineyard produces and bottles six of their very own wines on the property. Wine tasting events are held frequently with vintners from all over the world in attendance discussing the various wines. In addition, winery tours are given of the property and open containers are welcome. Some people even enjoy bringing their dog along for a tour. The excitement extends to the weekends as well when on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, Sassafras

Springs Vineyard hosts live music and offers a dinner. Sassafras Springs Vineyard is also the premier venue in Northwest Arkansas for all of your celebrations. Whether you are celebrating an anniversary, birthday, engagement, wedding, Christmas party, corporate engagement, or any other celebration, Sassafras Springs has the perfect venue to accommodate your event.

You can taste wines in the beautiful winery that was once a milk barn 50 years ago, or take in a reception in the Stables — a breath-taking renovated horse stable complete with wine glass chandeliers. The Chapel Ruins at Sassafras Springs — an old appearing chapel with architectural features from historical times — is a popular venue for weddings and can seat up to 400 guests. Sassafras Springs Vineyard was voted Best in Celebrate Arkansas Magazine in both 2016 and 2017, was a finalist in the 2016 Best of the Best, and a Best of Northwest Arkansas winner in CitiScapes Magazine in 2016. Sassafras Springs Vineyard is open from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Thursday through Saturday.

Thanks for voting us one of the Best of the Best of NW Arkansas! Sassafras Springs Vineyard is a newly designed venue, located in Northwest Arkansas, that will accommodate all of your celebrations. Please contact us for weddings, anniversaries, engagement parties, birthdays, corporate engagements, Christmas parties, or any other celebrations.

We can also take care of your kitchen, bath and laundry remodeling needs.

NWA Democrat-Gazette Best of the Best

Our newest addition to home services is electrical for residential. Our electricians make it easy for you to make your home more safe and secure, and get reliable electrical solutions. You’ll save money and keep your family safe with changing out your electric panel, smoke and CO detectors, adding outdoor/indoor lights, a backup generator or easy hook-up, and GFCI outlets.

40

Bud Anderson Heating & Cooling can also perform crawl space encapsulations and installation of HVAC systems for new constructions. A crawl space encapsulation involves leveling of the crawl space; removing debris, dirt mounds, and leftover construction materials; and adding a 90-mil airtight liner that seals and insulates the home from underneath to keep out mold, mildew, and soil gases. This also helps lower the energy costs year round. Bud Anderson also offers convenient and flexible payment plans with no payment period options. They also always offer up front pricing, so that you always know your costs before they begin services. Bud Anderson Heating & Cooling’s commitment to excellent customer service is what has defined it as a great customer satisfaction-oriented business. Bud Anderson Heating & Cooling reflects this customer service oriented business model by being the recipient, year after year, of the top prize in the Best of the Best Heating and Air category. Big night for Best of the Best It was a big night for Northwest Arkansas business owners and their employees as they gathered at the MetroPlex in Springdale to celebrate being named Best of the Best. The Best of the Best Gala is the culmination of months of nominating businesses and voting for them by the readers of the Northwest Arkansas democrat-Gazette. More than 600 excited business owners and their employees came together for a night of good food, good fun, good drink ‌ and, some not so good dancing... and to celebrate their victories. Being named Best of the Best is a great honor for our local businesses and the excitement carries through from the awards ceremony and to the Gala party following. Here are just a few moments captured during the 2016 Best of the Best Gala. Enjoy!

Speedy Splash Car Wash offers premium services at a low cost By Sarah Haney NWA Democrat-Gazette

S

peedy Splash Car Wash is a premium car wash that focuses on quality, efficiency and fivestar customer service. With three locations in Northwest Arkansas, Speedy Splash Car Wash came to the area in March of 2016. The first location to open was at 3274 N. College Ave., in Fayetteville, followed by locations at 216 SE Walton Blvd., in Bentonville, and 260 Joyce Blvd., in Fayetteville. “We really strive to have great customer service,” explained owner Lori Fitch. “We care about the quality of service our customers receive.” And this shows from beginning to end of your

visit at Speedy Splash Car Wash. Before even entering the car wash, you have the option to pretreat the front of your car with bug removing solution and are given free interior wipes to clean the inside of your car during the wash. Speedy Splash Car Wash offers a concentrated lava wash — it is a premium wash that is equipped with extra scrubbers that go on the tires and sides of the car. You can get a wash for as inexpensive as $5 and a 3 minute express car wash is even offered. The superior quality doesn’t stop at the automatic wash either — the great customer service continues to the vacuum stations. Each vacuum is free to use and has two hose options — the

regular sized, triangle shaped end option and a long skinny hose for the hard to reach spaces in between your car seats.

Each of the Speedy Splash Car Wash locations are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week.

Thank you for your support in the Best of the Best of NWA voting!

We hope to exceed your expectations in cleaning cars and customer service!

Thank you for Voting us One of the Best Real Estate Companies in Northwest Arkansas for the 9th Year Straight!

We LOVE serving Northwest Arkansas!

Lindsey realtors put customers first

F

Special to NWA Democrat-Gazette

or the eighth straight year, Lindsey and Associates has been nominated as one of the best real estate companies. Started by Jim Lindsey and J.W. Gabel in 1972 in a small little house on U.S. 71, Lindsey & Associates has continued to grow. Lindsey and Associates currently has one location in Fayetteville and one in Rogers. In August 2006, the 74,000-square-foot Lindsey Tower in Fayetteville opened to accommodate the growing real estate company, which now has more than 200 real estate agents. Rigo Gomez, senior vice president, sales manager and designated executive broker for the Fayetteville office, said that Lindsey’s on-going success is built upon a legacy of putting the customer first, an attitude that is practiced by our managers, agents, and staff. “It’s in our DNA, we are delighted that our clients and customers continue to choose us as best real estate company. This award underscores our unwavering devotion to superior customer service, an oath we practice every day, and a commitment that our agents have

practiced since our modest beginnings in 1972,” he said. Suzette Sparks, senior vice president and managing broker for the Rogers office, said Lindsey is the perfect combination of great ownership, the best agents and a dedicated staff. She said that Lindsey is dedicated to providing full service to its agents and clients. “Whether it is advertising, temporary housing, or an unsurpassed honest and ethical approach to business, Lindsey & Associates will not be outdone,” she said. “That in addition to the most knowledgeable, caring agents sets us apart from any competitor.” Lindsey’s friendly, professionally trained sales associates are committed to helping their customers buy or sell a home. They understand that buying or selling a home can be a very scary process, and they work with people every step of the way. Potential buyers or sellers can search for property, contact a realtor, learn the steps involved in buying or selling property, find out about career opportunities and learn about the company itself at lindsey.com.

Pest Control Service nwadg.com/best

Bugged by bugs? Let Natural State Pest Control eliminate your pest problem BY DAVE WOODS NWA Democrat-Gazette

T

rent Ragar had three main objectives to accomplish when he and his wife, Amanda, opened Natural State Pest Control just more than a year ago. “We really focus on customer service,” the young entrepreneur said. “We always show up on time. And when you call our office you get someone who is local and can solve your issue immediately. All of our technicians are drug tested and have clean background checks. But, great customer service is really the core of our company.” While quality customer service is a key tenet of Trent’s business philosophy, community involvement is a close second. “We do a lot for the community,” the former lawn care professional said. “Last year we donated $24,000 in free services right here in Northwest Arkansas. We really push community involvement.” This year during October Trent and his technicians all donned pink gear to raise awareness of Breast Cancer

NWA Democrat-Gazette Best of the Best

Awareness Month. The company donated funds to the Komen for a Cure program for each sale made and each service performed during the month-long observance. People don’t expect to see their bug guy show up wearing pink gloves,” he laughed. Another push Trent is making at Natural State Pest Control is to use an integrated approach to pest management and utilize reduced risk products. “We try and use as many green products as we can,” he said. “We use reduced risk products and integrated pest management. We are not just a spray and go company. Integrated pest management means we really try to solve the source of problem and not just spray right off the bat. We use an integrated approach to help the home owner to find ways to reduce the population and keep it down or eliminate it naturally rather than always relying on chemicals all of the time.” Natural State Pest Control is one of only 2 local Certified Sentricon Specialists for termite control. Sentricon is the first product registered under the U.S. EPA Reduced Risk

55

Pesticide Program. Trent and his team are very proud to offer the same termite technology that protects the Statue of Liberty and even the White House in Washington D.C. A full service pest control company, Natural State’s services include the elimination of roaches, termites, rodents, ants, spiders and even pesky bed bugs. “We use heat for bed bugs,” he said. “It’s a much safer and more effective way to kill bed bugs. Instead of repeatedly coming into your house and spraying a bunch of restricted use chemicals, we heat your house up to 130 degrees for four hours. We are able to get an instant kill throughout the entire home.” Trent said he wants NWA residents to understand one main thing: “We use the most advanced techniques available.” “We’re not just baseboard sprayers,” he stressed. “We hear that a lot around here. “We are looking to solve your pest problem in a customer friendly way. Call us and we’ll answer the phone on the first or second ring and take care of your issue today with our same day service pledge.”

Dog Party USA a popular place for pooches By Dave Woods NWA Democrat-Gazette

C

haddie Platt has been having a ball at Dog Party USA for more than a dozen years. “It is a lot of fun,” she said of her canine boarding business. “It’s like a doggie hotel with a lot of play time built in. The dogs come for daycare or boarding, grooming or training. They get to play outside all day in supervised play groups.” “An essential part of keeping it fun is striving to continually improve,” comments Platt. “We have a big project underway right now to put K-9 Grass in the Big Dog Yard. We already have it in several other yards and it makes life better for both the dogs and the humans. The dogs can play all day and splash around in the water, pools and sprinklers and not get muddy! And it stays nice and green and clean all year round.” Another key to keeping it fun and safe is staff training on the dynamics of group play, canine body language and stress signals. This enables employees to recognize problems before they get out of hand and to take steps to avert any aggressive behavior. Each play group is supervised all day by trained staff and there are several different groups for different sizes and play styles. Another aspect of continual improvement is taking advantage of the latest technology and trends in cleaning and sanitation. There are Ecoboxes to clean the air and also essential oils to eliminate viruses. The combination of UV technology and natural herbs helps to keep everyone healthy.

Real Estate Team nwadg.com/best

Midtown Associates brings new real estate concept to region By Dave Woods NWA Democrat-Gazette

W

hen you speak to Michelle you can’t help but notice how passionate she is about what she does. “If you do what you love you’ll never work a day in your life,” she said. “It’s true. I’ve heard that statement all my life and now I am living it daily.” When Michelle Dearing and Calah Andelman co-founded Midtown Associates in 2016 they had a lofty idea in mind. “We wanted to get back to the basics of developing relationships and introducing people to the community we love,” Michelle explained. “We find that even people who live here in Northwest

Arkansas really don’t know what all our area has to offer.” From concept to reality, the pair got moving. “We opened an office on Main Street in Bentonville,” she said. “We knew we wanted to develop relationships in the community through art, music and education. We have an art gallery in our office where we showcase local artists’ works, a community room and flexible event space. It is not uncommon to walk into our office to find yourself in the middle of an art opening, a non-profit event or a mini concert by one of our local bands.” The response to the new concept in real estate has caught the public’s attention.

“We knew we didn’t want to settle for business as usual but we had no idea how wildly successful our concept would be” Michelle said. “We’ve been so fortunate that our passion aligned with such a large need in the community.” While connecting back to the community is important, let’s not forget Midtown Associates is a growing real

estate agency in the region. “We’ve been able to be very selective in the agents we have brought on to the team,” she said. “Our goal is not to be the biggest just the best. We do the small things that go unnoticed, the hard things that need to be done and the important things that make a difference. We are up to nine agents now who all bring different skill sets to the team but they all have one thing in common…..they love connecting people to their hometown.” When you speak to Michelle you can’t help but notice how passionate she is about what she does. “If you do what you love you’ll never work a day in your life,” she said. “It’s true. I’ve heard that statement all my life and now I am living it daily.”

Abuelo’s immerses diners in art, culture, cuisine of Mexico

S

Special to NWA Democrat-Gazette

urrounded by hand-painted murals and carved statues, diners at Abuelo’s restaurants experience a combination of traditional Mexican dining and art. The art and culture of Mexico add a comfortable ambiance to the Abuelo’s concept. Since its first opening in 1989, Aubelo’s has consistently been on the leading edge of Mexican cuisine, combining menu creativity, outstanding food and beverage quality, colorful plate presentations and superior service in an impressive Mexican courtyard-themed atmosphere. Abuelo’s is similar to dining at upscale restaurants in Mexico City or other Mexican destinations. Instead of the stereotypical sombreros and pinatas, Abuelo’s is designed as an open-air Mexican courtyard with a mix of both modern and traditional Mexican décor. Abuelo’s menu selections feature subtle flavors of coastal and interior Mexican cuisine and have earned a reputation for “raising the bar” of Mexican food restaurants. Abuelo’s made-fromscratch dishes are made from the heart and crafted with pride from Chef Luis Sanchez’s family recipes. Abuelo’s uses only the freshest, finest ingredients in all its dishes from the scratch-made salsas, sauces and sides, to the hand-rolled enchiladas, traditional Tex Mex items and unique House Specialties. It’s this dedication to food and service that has secured Abuelo’s ranking as the #1 Mexican Restaurant in America since 2006 by consumers, as published in the nation’s most respected consumer rating magazine.

SPECIAL TO THE NWA DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE

Abuelo’s is located at 4005 W. Walnut St. in Rogers.

Owned and operated by Food Concepts International of Lubbock, Texas, the company currently has 38 restaurants located in 13 states throughout the nation and more openings planned for the future. More information is available at abuelos.com or at facebook.com/Abuelos.

he success is in the details at Buffington Homes. “The first thing that comes to mind is our floor plans and the open feel they provide,” said Mike Lamberth, who has been with Buffington since its beginning in 2010. “That paired with our attention to details, such as window location, provide a sense of airiness that not everyone can put their finger on. Having a great floor plan leaves room for attention to detail in the building of our communities, our neighborhood locations, the design process, the quality of craftsmanship, and overall home ownership experience. These things combined are the key to being a successful builder.” Specializing in residential homes, Mike said the combination of paying attention to detail mixed with his quality team means success is inevitable. “Our team is unique,” he explained. “We bring together many different types of people to build a home. They are all work together to keep design, marketing, sales, construction, and our clients, all on the same page. This can be harder than you think. We have the right people in the right positions and we are able to make this happen. Without this team working together the way that they do, we would not have the company that we have built over the past several years. Mike said his mission is simple. “Our goal as a new home builder is to provide a safe place for a family to grow, and an opportunity to make their life better no matter what stage they are in,” he explained. “Building a home to provide for a family will always be special to us and is something we never want to take for granted.

Staffing Agency nwadg.com/best

People Source Staffing Professionals brings quality employment to Northwest Arkansas By Sarah Haney Special to NWA Democrat-Gazette

F

ounded by CEO David Bozalis in 2002, People Source Staffing Professionals is considered a full-service staffing agency working to place qualified individuals in light industrial, clerical, administrative, medical and management positions with options in hiring direct, temporary, or temp to perm. While other agencies can feel more impersonal and like a cattlecall, People Source takes a minimum of 30 minutes with each candidate. During this time, People Source will match the candidate’s background with their resume, learn what the candidate’s goal is, and determine whether they meet hiring requirements.

With this added attention to detail, it is no wonder that People Source stands out as a top staffing agency in Northwest Arkansas. The dedicated teams at People Source also set them apart from other agencies. They display compassion, can-do attitudes, honesty, integrity, and respect for the employees and clients they serve. New and better ways of doing business to meet and exceed employee and client satisfaction are also continuously sought by the

leadership team. After nearly 16 years in business, People Source’s teams still fulfills the vision of creating a company that contributes to local communities by matching individuals to clients that need quality employees. With locations at 1401 SW 14th St., in Bentonville, and 3896 Elm Springs Road, in Springdale, People Source of Northwest Arkansas helps match outstanding employees with quality jobs in the area. People Source of NWA is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Guess Who? prides itself on excellent customer service By Sarah Haney NWA Democrat-Gazette

G

uess Who? makes customer service their top priority. In fact, they go by the motto “Customer service beyond the customer’s expectation.” Ever since the Bentonville business opened on March 17, 2014, every customer that comes in is greeted warmly and treated with respect. From helping customers with their selections and tasting new products to helping them load their purchases in their vehicle, the staff at Guess Who? makes sure that every visit to the spirits, fine wine, and beer store is an enjoyable one. Guess Who? has the broadest assortment of wine and spirits in the midwest. In fact, their assortment of craft beer available is double that of any store in the area. They are able to do this while also keeping the

pricing very competitive. Every month, new products are brought in and they are currently expanding on their selection of small batch bourbons. Every Wednesday, Guess Who? hosts a very sizable wine tasting at 6 p.m. There is usually an average of 40 to 60 people every night for the tasting class. The store always tries to have a representative from one of the wineries there to discuss the wines that are being tasted. The wine tastings are free to attend and are accompanied by snack foods — all you have to do is sign up in advance. In addition to wine tastings, craft beer tastings are held every other week with a representative from the brewery to teach about the craft beers. Guess Who? also has a very large tasting bar in their wine room and on any given day there is at least eight

Military veterans running Absolute Heat and Air like a family By Dave Woods NWA Democrat-Gazette

W

ith dozens of years of collective military and trucking experience, Chad Dewey and his two partners are making an impact on the Northwest Arkansas heating and air business. Co-owners of Absolute Heat and Air, Chad, his brother Lance Dewey and partner Mike Neil are determined to bring outstanding customer service to the folks who pick them for their heating and air needs. Chad said he is pleased with how their two-year old business is being received. “Man, it’s been absolutely awesome,” the Marine Corps veteran said. “It’s great to have all the folks we had worked with

before and had relationships with on our side. We’re proud of our involvement with the Springdale Schools and JB Hunt, Walmart, Tyson and with the Springfield Chamber of Commerce. I feel like the customer service experience we received working those jobs really gave us the business foot forward having those relationships. Without that I think it would have been a real real struggle, so that’s been so helpful.” The crew at Absolute Heat and Air know what they like to do in the business and are developing a loyal following of residential and light commercial customers. “That’s our sweet spot,” Chad explained. “We have a total of 17 employees in our local office. We were

not going to try to do a big hospital or something like that. We like light commercial jobs like restaurants. But, we do new residential and new commercial and services, too. Or, retro for any of those kinds of jobs. It’s what we love.” “Ninty-two percent of the employees

have more than five years experience,” he said. “We didn’t just hire people that needed training and had no experience. We hired experienced certified technicians. They are background checked and drug tested and we are insured and bonded.” With so much military training behind them it’s no surprise Absolute runs with military precision. “One of our big mottos is’ attention to detail,’” he stressed. “Secondly ‘we do what we say, and say what we do.’” The absolute teams current focus is building their customer base. Or, as Chad explained … their work family. “We what people to join our family and that’s how we are running our business. Like a family,” Chad said.

Home Instead Senior Care provides outstanding home care in Northwest Arkansas By Sarah Haney NWA Democrat-Gazette

P

aul and Lori Hogan founded Home Instead, Inc. in 1994 in Omaha, Neb. Through his own personal experience caring for his grandmother, Paul realized many families could use the help of an inhome caregiver to enable seniors to live independently at home. In 1995, Home Instead, Inc. began franchising and their network has grown to include more than 1,000 franchises around the world — including the office in Rogers, Ark. “Ultimately, when you talk about services you’re really talking about ‘why’,” stated Carey Lingenfelter, general manager and partner of the Rogers location. “Our ‘why’ is to enhance the lives of aging adults in the community.” This can be achieved by the many services Home Instead Senior Care offers including housekeeping duties, and social activities such as church,

Home Instead Senior Care is a great resource for families and helps with reducing stress between home and environment. The Rogers location was established in February 2001 and is extremely well-connected to the healthcare system in Northwest Arkansas. As an employee based organization, Home Instead Senior Care is not a registry. Every one of their representatives is an employee of the organization. Home Instead Senior Care is able to offer career advancement and education to its employees while also offering incredible employee benefits. “We really put our employees first when it comes to business decisions,” stated Lingenfelter. “We are caregivers for our caregivers.” The memory care offered at Home Instead Senior Care is another great element the organization provides. Through this, they are able to focus on the needs of Alzheimer’s, dementia, and

bingo and bridge. Staff also helps with running errands, whether it is going to the bank, the grocery store, or doctor’s appointments. “We may attend the physician visit, receive the information and translate it so it’s easy to understand for the client’s family members,” noted Lingenfelter. “We are able to share those physician requests — dietary or medicine management. We have an internal management portal called ‘The Family Room’ that is a great communication tool that keeps the family informed.” Home Instead Senior Care also offers many advanced services including personal care, bathing, dressing and personal hygiene, and helping with transfers. “Personal care takes a certain skill set and we have amazing state recognized, accredited certification and training,” added Lingenfelter. “Our employees who have this certification can go into advanced in-home care or CNA programs.”

Parkinson’s patients. Many clients are given care 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year-round. All of the Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers take part in a unique and critically acclaimed training program called CARE (Changing Aging through Research and Education). Home Instead Senior Care has received recognition in the past for their great care and compassion. In 2017, they received the Five Star Caring.com award for Best In-Home Care in Northwest Arkansas. With the singular location in Rogers at 100 N.
