Seventh-annual poll honors NWA’s Best of the Best

A

s the diversity of businesses and consumer selections in Northwest Arkansas expands, so does the number of people who want to recognize their favorites among them. This special publication reflects the results of more than 300,000 votes that were collected in the 2015 Best of the Best in Northwest Arkansas. In Northwest Arkansas DemocratGazette’s largest poll to date, it is clear that the public is passionate about supporting businesses that excel in their services, products and quality get recognition for a job well done. Two voting rounds were offered. In the first round, the public filled out an open-response ballot, available online and in print, to select their favorite businesses in 147 categories covering places, dining, entertainment, shopping, home, finances and services. This process gave us the top-five finalists. These finalists were then put back to the test for another vote so the public could make final choices as to the Best among the Best.

A competitive environment is said to be good for all involved, particularly the consumer. That holds true in Northwest Arkansas. “Because it brings together readers’ opinions with a celebration of local businesses, the Best of the Best of Northwest Arkansas is one of our favorite publications,” said Crystal Costa, advertising and marketing director for the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. This section is packed with photos and articles about the winning businesses, along with a comprehensive list of first- and second-place winners. The complete list of the top five finalists can be seen online at nwadg.com/ best. “I think that Northwest Arkansas consumers want to recognize those businesses that go above and beyond in service and quality,” Costa said. “In turn, I see and hear from local business owners who genuinely feel honored and want to show their appreciation for the vote of confidence from their customers.” First- and second-place winners were honored Thursday evening at the 2015 Best of the Best Boots and Bling Awards Gala at the Metroplex in Springdale. Photos from the event, along with videos about winning businesses and a searchable directory of winners, are available online at nwadg.com/best.

BEST OF THE BEST

lot of people wonder if Dog Party USA is a national chain or franchise. With a name like that, who can blame them? However, it is not – the location in Northwest Arkansas is the only one there is. Dog Party USA is celebrating its 10th anniversary this fall and staff members say it has been an amazing 10 years with the dogs, the staff and the family. When they first opened Dog Party USA in 2005, Chaddie Platt and Priscilla Kumpe anticipated getting to know lots of dogs, but little did they know how much they would grow to love them and their families. “In this business, you become aware of what is going on in people’s lives, both the happy and sad occasions such as weddings, births, funerals and illness,” Platt said. “People usually think of vacations when they think about boarding their dogs, but there are many other occasions in people’s lives that require the pups to come and stay. We are glad to be able to ease the owner’s minds when something comes up that is out of their control, such as illness, damage to their house, or a family member who needs their help out of the area. “Now that it has been 10 years, we have seen romances turn into marriages and then children come along. We are with the dogs from puppyhood to old age and are thankful to count them as friends.” Platt said that every day is a new day at Dog Party USA. “Some people might think that working with dogs all day would get old, but that is far from the reality,” Platt said. “They all have such different personalities, and you get to know them better over time as your relationship grows closer.” With five play groups from which to choose, the staff is continually striving to make sure each dog is in the right play group for their size, temperament, play style and age. These are all important factors to consider when evaluating a dog for group play, in addition to breed, body language, amount of past socialization, and confidence level. All of these factors are continually evolving as a dog grows and gains confidence, or ages and becomes less playful or agile. With seven outdoor play areas and six indoor play areas, dogs are able to play all day no matter what the weather is like outside. “We have some great projects planned for the coming years, such as an agility field and a swimming pool – stay tuned for more fun and games,” Platt said.

aVida Massage & Medspa has been successfully providing a variety of health, wellness, and rejuvenating services for Northwest Arkansas since 2008 in Fayetteville. LaVida can now offer those same services in Bentonville with a second center located just southeast of Rainbow Curve, in Rainbow Curve Junction. “With the growing awareness of health and wellness, people are realizing what benefits routine massages can have,” said owner Gwen Heim. Studies of the benefits of massage demonstrate that it is an effective treatment for reducing stress, pain, muscle tension and headaches. Some studies have found massage may also be helpful for anxiety, fibromyalgia, insomnia related to stress, myofascial pain, sports injuries, and TMJ pain. LaVida Massage offers 60- and 90-minute sessions in a relax-

ing and professional atmosphere. With more than 30 licensed massage therapists, LaVida has the staff and experience to accommodate clients seven days a week. In December 2012, LaVida added advanced aesthetic services with the introduction of LaVida Medspa. The professionals at LaVida Medspa offer up-to-date aesthetic procedures for optimal results with little to no downtime. “Over the last decade, aesthetic medicine has significantly advanced largely as a result of a better understanding of laser technology,” said Dr. Marcus Heim of LaVida Medspa. “At LaVida Medspa, we offer treatments that significantly improve appearance and skin health with very little to no downtime. We are very excited about our new hybrid fractional laser, Halo.” Over time, the skin can lose its youthful glow due to sun exposure and the body’s natural aging process. As a result, sunspots may develop, fine lines may appear and the skin loses some of its natural, healthy glow. Previous

lasers couldn’t effectively remove the damage because the treatment was either too shallow or too deep. The new Halo technology eliminates years of damage by precisely targeting the right depth. In the past, patients had to choose between a procedure that offered really great results but required a lengthy recovery, or a procedure with a fast recovery but marginal results. With Halo, patients are offered the best of both worlds — great results with minimal downtime. Halo precisely targets years of damage to the skin, including discoloration, enlarged pores, sun damage, poor texture, visible signs of aging and uneven skin tone. The Medspa also offers Botox and Filler Injections, Forever Young BBL, Laser Hair Reduction, SkinTyte, and Vanquish Core & Flex for non-invasive fat cell elimination. Those interested can call the Fayetteville location at (479) 521-3232 or the Bentonville one at (479) 876-8004 to set up a free one-hour skin consultation.

Join LaVida experts for a hip and casual chat to learn more about the HALO and aesthetic services over lunch or cocktails on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at the Springdale Country Club at 11:30 p.m. or 5:30 a.m. Seating is limited. Book reservations with Gina Minton by calling (479) 521-3232.

Better Hearing and Balance Connection is in the business of helping others Special to NWA Democrat-Gazette

etter Hearing and Balance Connection has become a staple in Benton County since Dr. Gretchen Magee opened the doors in 2010 in Bella Vista. Magee is an audiologist who is in the business to help people avoid isolating themselves from friends and family because of hearing problems. “I give them the ability to reconnect with friends and family,” Magee said. Magee earned a doctorate in audiology from the University of Oklahoma in 2008 and enjoys educating her patients about hearing and hearing aids. “The first consultation is free,” Magee said. “I want to reduce the stigma of talking about hearing loss — our doors are always open.” A member of the Bella Vista Business Association, Better Hearing and Balance Connection offers a valuable

hearing-care package with the purchase of most hearing aids. The free package covers batteries for five years, disposable supplies and office visits. Outside of the office, Magee volunteers with the Daughters of the American Revolution and also is involved with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. She volunteers specifically in the academic accreditation department, reviewing speech and hearing programs for ASHA. Magee also serves as a leadership development program reviewer for ASHA, helping select new career professionals and reviewing ethical violations for the profession. She also currently serves on the Board of Ethics Committee. Dr. Shawn Key, a doctor of audiology, joined Better Hearing and Balance Connection in September 2014. He spent the previous 10 years practicing in West Texas. Key’s younger cousin was diagnosed at age 3 with a profound hearing loss, which prompted Key to enter the

audiology profession in effort to help improve people’s hearing. Key credits his compassion for others as a Godgiven gift, and he refers to his professional career as a calling. In addition to practicing as an audiologist, Key is also a licensed minister. He received his license to minister in 2013, but he has been active in church ministry for several years. He founded Faith, Hope, & Love Fellowship – an affirming, apostolic ministry — in his home in September 2014. In addition to his work as a pastor of a home mission church in Northwest Arkansas, Key is also the education coordinator for Reconciling Pentecostals International, which is a fellowship of affirming, apostolic ministers and ministries in the United States and abroad. eing ranked one of America’s Top 10 Best Healthy Places to Retire by U.S. News & World Report shouldn’t come as a surprise to most of those who know a thing or two about Bella Vista. However, to most people, it is unexpected to learn that Bella Vista is ranked one of the Top 25 Best Places for Affordable Homes by CNNMoney. com and Money Magazine. It shouldn’t be surprising that Bella Vista has captured national attention, considering it is home to seven stocked lakes, seven golf courses, several trail systems for walking, running and biking, tennis courts, swimming pools, a gun range and a long list of other amenities. The surprising thing is how little it costs to enjoy the amenities year-round. For less than half of what HOA dues cost the average homeowner in Northwest Arkansas per year, an individual can take advantage of almost everything Bella Vista has to offer. Becoming a member has never been easier. All one has to do is buy a piece of property in Bella Vista Village. Lots aren’t as expensive as one might think. Bella Vista Village Property Owners have access to a variety of amenities, including seven golf courses, seven stocked lakes, indoor/outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, walking trails, nature trails, biking trails, a gun range, recreation centers, an RV park, playgrounds, miniature golf, racquetball, basketball and boating, as well as several parks, pavilions and clubhouses. atrons shouldn’t be fooled by the name. Crabby’s in Rogers has been voted as one of the Best of the Best by readers in the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette annual readership poll for good reason, including its friendly atmosphere. Opened in 2008 just north of Pinnacle Country Club, Crabby’s has developed a loyal following of global customers over the years. As a locally owned private establishment, being able to focus on one location helps provide a singular focus on quality throughout the restaurant. This commitment to excellence by the staff is what has crafted Crabby’s reputation throughout the business traveler community and with the local residents who visit the restaurant regularly. General Manager Joey Hurt, who has worked at the restaurant since its opening, says that “despite being primarily known as a seafood restaurant, we have fresh hand-cut pork chops and steaks, great pastas and risottos, and a little bit

of everything.” Crabby’s is open every day. Hours on Monday through Saturday are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sunday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. A highlight of the finely furnished restaurant is the large outdoor patio where happy hour takes place Monday through Friday from 4-7 p.m. and 9 p.m. to close, and on Sundays from 3 p.m. to close. The bar stocks fine wines, a plethora of liqour and craft beers. The interior offers a high-class style fitting a romantic dinner or a business lunch. Staples of the Crabby’s menu is their pan-seared Chilean sea bass, blackened salmon Oscar topped with lump crab meat, and sesame-encrusted ahi tuna. Those three dishes have been on Crabby’s menu since day one and are the signature dishes. Collier Drug Stores provide hometown service Special to NWA Democrat-Gazette

A

nyone who has lived in or around Fayetteville or the Northwest Arkansas area for any length of time likely has been in one of Collier Drug Stores’ nine locations. The family-owned drug store has been around since 1917, starting as Red Cross Drug Store on the Fayetteville Square, and was opened by M.M. Collier to provide a pharmacy for Fayetteville. Collier offered many modern conveniences like free delivery and charge accounts, and that tradition continues today. In 1930, Morris Collier joined his father in the family business after completing pharmacy school. The family opened their second location, Collier Rexall Drug Store, in 1950 on Dickson Street. A short time later, the store on the Fayetteville Square burned, and they simply moved everything to the Dickson Street location.

Many years later, Morris Collier’s sons, Carl and Morris Jr., joined the family business and continued providing service in and around Fayetteville. In 2007, Carl’s son, Mel, took over ownership and continued to expand, opening additional locations. These include Prairie Grove, Farmington, Willow Creek Compounding, North Hills, Elkins, Bentonville and Har-Ber/ Tontitown. Collier Drug Stores’ compounding lab in the Willow Creek location provides medication not readily available on the market and compounded to meet a customer’s specific needs. Collier Drug Stores continues to provide hometown service, being one of the few places left to provide free delivery and charge accounts, just like many years ago. Collier Drug Stores is online on Facebook, Instagram and its website at collierdrug.com. Prescriptions can be refilled online or by phone and mobile app.

The facility is family owned and operated, therefore the residents are treated like family. “It has everything you could ever need for easy living; family taking care of family,” said Leroy Miller, a resident of The Meadows since 2007. “You are always treated like family,” said resident Verna Menard. The Meadows is a licensed Level II Assisted Living community with a unique setup. acadoodles once again has been voted to the top of the Best of the Best list by Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette readers, an honor the stores’ owner credits to outstanding selection and customer service. Macadoodles’ locations include Pineville, Mo., and Springdale, both which offer the same outstanding selection for which the flagship Pineville store became so well known. Macadoodles owner Roger Gildehaus said it’s a great feeling to know his loyal customers appreciate all the hard work put into each day by Macadoodles staff members. “This award reinforces our strong belief that we give our customers the great service they deserve,” he said. Gildehaus said Macadoodles has been recognized in the industry for the hard work of its associates, as well as for their efforts to be creative in selling products.

Macadoodles’ founding principles are to have the best assortment of beer, wine and spirits in stock at all times; to have extremely competitive pricing; and to provide world-class customer service. Gildehaus said those fundamentals, along with ensuring an enjoyable shopping experience, draw in customers and keep them coming back. He also sees them as a big reason for the Best of the Best honor. “When you walk in the door, you will be greeted by a friendly staff member,” Gildehaus said. “At every corner there is someone to help, and when leaving, you will be thanked for coming to visit us.” Gildehaus said that during the past year and a half since Benton County has gone wet, Macadoodles has maintained its loyal customer following. He attributes that success to his staff of hardworking associates. More information is available on Facebook, Twitter or by visiting the frequently updated website at macadoodles.com.

From the beginning the customer has always been the top priority at MACADOODLES. Every idea, every plan and every detail has to pass the customer test. L

ocated in the Kantz Center on the northwest corner of East Mission Boulevard and Crossover Road in east Fayetteville, Mission Family Practice offers an array of medical services for the needs of any family member. Dr. Mark Bonner is the principal in the practice and has been practicing family medicine for 25 years in Northwest Arkansas. A Little Rock native and graduate of the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, Bonner is an Arkansas born-and-raised, Arkansas-educated physician who understands the needs of his Arkansas patients. Those with sports-related injuries can be assured of quality care from Bonner, as he has been a team physician for Arkansas Razorbacks sports teams for more than 13

years and for Fayetteville High School sports for 25 years. Having left a large corporate practice just this past December to open an independent practice and being voted by the readers of the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in his first year of operation is a testament to the quality of staff at Mission Family Practice. Bonner accepts most all types of insurance and government health programs. Mark Bonner Jr., Office Administrator, explains that Bonner never wants to refuse care to a patient based on policies and procedures. There are three advance practice nurses at Mission Family Practice with up to 18 years of experience each. These nurses play a pivotal role in Bonner’s practice. Besides seeing traditional patients, they are available to treat urgent cases with minimal wait time, allowing Bonner to concentrate on patients who may need longer, more thorough examinations.
