Neuro Physiotherapy

Kinesiology

Whilst many of us are familiar with the term Physiotherapy, less is known about Neuro Physiotherapy and how it can provide relief for patients suffering from movement difficulties, whether due to age or neurological impairments. Tanya Riddlesdell is a Neuro Physiotherapist (specialising in MS, Parkinsons, Head Injury, Spinal Injury and Stroke) with 20 years’ experience in the NHS and in the last 5 years has also been working with private patients in the Rutland area with much success. Treatments cover exercise programmes to treat symptoms, fatigue management, postural advice, strengthening programmes and monitoring symptoms to provide ongoing support. Tanya starts with a consultation to determine the exact nature of the patient’s needs before running a six week session with a group tailored specifically to individuals with similar requirements. If booked individually, costs are £40 for the initial assessment and £15 for each class thereafter (£130), or £118 if booked and paid for in one go. Home visits are available by separate arrangement. In order to explain the benefits of this treatment, Tanya has organised an ‘Introduction to Neuro Physiotherapy seminar’ on March 31st at the Voluntary Action Centre in Rutland; free places are limited so you will need to book in advance by calling 07980 239 203.

Having gained popularity in recent years, Kinesiology is fast becoming recognised as a key treatment for resolving complex and difficult health problems. Essentially it is the study of human movement and it can help identify blockages within the body which may be causing health issues by means of a muscle test. I went along to visit Kinesiologist Anna Findlay who began by systematically exerting light pressure on my limbs to see how the muscles responded. Generally, the tests detected that I was in good health (always good to know!) but that I could re-balance myself emotionally by acknowledging feelings of grief and regret and also that my spleen and stomach were working slightly too hard. Once these areas had been identified, Anna stimulated certain acupuncture meridians to restore the muscle’s strength and work on the corresponding organ. Additionally, homeopathic vials can be selected which could indicate potential stressors to the body such as candida, good bacteria deficiency, blood sugar irregularity and other imbalances. I was given a formula for strength and vitality and also one for balancing hormones. Initial consultations take 11/4 hours and cost £60 with subsequent 45 minute appointments costing £40. Clients would need to expect to pay for nutritional or homeopathic supplements if applicable.

Mindfulness practice Tired, stressed, anxious… sound familiar? With many of us leading increasingly hectic lifestyles, it’s no wonder that cases of anxiety and depression are on the rise. Taking steps to reduce your stress levels can have a hugely positive impact on your life – but without the use of medication, it’s not easy to know how to achieve this. Helen Tipper is a qualified CIC Accredited Mindfulness practitioner with a degree in nutrition and psychology and offers Mindfulness courses as well as one-to-one sessions to help with a variety of stress-related problems. Helen told me: “Mindfulness practice is essentially the formal practice of a daily meditation in order to train the brain and change the way in which you think. It will teach you to live in the present rather than worrying about what’s happened in the past or what will occur in the future; alleviating a lot of stress and anxiety.” Helen’s sessions have also helped patients overcome eating disorders and addictions. Courses consist of 8 weekly 2 hour sessions with a maximum of 18 per class and cost £195. One-to-one treatments cost £250 for 8 sessions. Take care of your heart Judith Ewing is a local personal trainer and fitness instructor with 25 years’ experience in the industry. She told me how exercise should play a vital role in maintaining your overall health: “Exercise is not just about weight loss and acquiring a fantastic physique. Although it is important to control your weight and obtain the best shape you can, exercise is important for your general well-being. The most important part of our body to maintain is our heart. The heart is a muscle and just like any other muscle in your body, will grow bigger and get stronger if you exercise it regularly. A strong heart means it doesn’t have to work so hard to pump the blood around your body; thereby reducing blood pressure - all good things for improving your health and your life span. The best form of exercise to keep us fit and healthy is cardiovascular or in simpler terms aerobic exercise whereupon your heart beats faster and you break out into a sweat. So you need to perform exercises such as running, cycling, swimming, join an aerobics or dance class or use the cardio equipment at the local gym. Any exercise which elevates your heart rate will benefit you. And you don’t have to exercise for long - just 20 minutes 3-4 times a week will drastically improve your health and fitness. Everyone wants to enjoy a long, healthy life and if you include regular exercise into your lifestyle you will definitely live longer, your body will work more efficiently and you will feel and look better. Exercise really is the closest answer you will find to eternal youth!” • Judith Ewing, 07771 866123, judithewingfitness.com, Facebook: Judith Ewing Fitness, Twitter: @EwingFitness

Hypnotherapy If you’ve struggled with a particular aspect of your health and found that conventional methods haven’t worked, it may be time to think outside of the box. Lynne Woods has practised holistic and nutritional therapies for many years and has recently qualified as a hypnotherapist. She believes in integrating these practises and using a combination of methods to ensure each person is treated in a unique way: “I always start with a detailed consultation to get to the root of the problem and identify any emotional issues that may be the cause or a contributory factor. In a situation where someone is struggling with their weight, I have found a lot of success with hypno weight reduction and hypno gastric band therapy in which the unconscious mind can be persuaded that a gastric band has been fitted and acts accordingly. This can be combined with nutritional advice to ensure real, long-term weight loss.” Lynne also works with people suffering from insomnia and those with chronic fatigue: “Up to 50% of people suffer from some sort of sleep problems and this can often be caused by the stresses and anxieties of everyday life. Nutrition plays a huge role in our overall health and a change in diet can have a really positive effect on stress and depression, resulting in improved sleep patterns.” To find out about the full range of natural healing therapies that Lynne offers, please contact: • Lynne Woods, Health Routes, Tel; 01572 720044, 07794 723831, lynne_woods@hotmail. com, www.health-routes.co.uk RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING MARCH 2015
