BHCF: MAKING A DIFFERENCESUMMER

ummertime in the Lowcountry brings so many of our families together, to enjoy longer days that linger and all the summer fun that comes along with it.

At Berkeley Hall, our Grand Fourth of July Celebration is one of our most well-loved traditions. From our Firecracker 5k and Cart Parade to the Grand Fireworks Showcase, our stellar line-up of events is the best way to enjoy July Fourth weekend with good friends and family!

We’re especially excited to show off our new kitchen renovation, and Chef James has big plans for our new culinary home. Look forward to new pairings, handtossed pizzas, tastings and food events to showcase fresh flavors and offerings!

As always, thank you for your support. It's been extraordinary to see club projects,

most notably the kitchen, come to fruition so successfully! This is an achievement we can all share in together, as we enhance our amenities and the overall member experience.

Soon we’ll be talking about the 2025 Charity Cup, the Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation’s signature fundraising event –registration opens on August 15th! With a rich history of philanthropy in the Lowcountry, each year monies raised at the annual Charity Cup event fund the following year’s grant cycle, and help us make a real difference in our greater community. Read more about it on pages 6-7.

With gorgeous days that stretch into soft, pastel-hued evenings, we’ll take any opportunity to get on the water! And our River Park is one of the most beautiful places you’ll find. Whether you’re enjoying an afternoon or sunset cruise on the Club's pontoon boat, gliding off for a kayak excursion, or enjoying a beautiful sunset, a feeling of peacefulness envelopes this special place.

Coastal living naturally centers on casual dining, easy happy hours and those languid evenings we love on the Verandah. We look forward to seeing you there!

Cheers to a great summer!

HURRICANE SEASON – KEEPING YOU INFORMED

With sunny skies, it's easy to forget we're already in the beginning of hurricane season. The peak months for hurricane activity in the Lowcountry are August and September.

During this season, it's important to be prepared and plan ahead for a hurricane evacuation. Look for updates on weather activity from Berkeley Hall. We will keep

members informed of any severe weather conditions via e-communications, member website updates, Club app, and social media channels.

If you’re not already following us on Facebook and Twitter, simply go to the main page of our website and click on the icons located at the bottom of the main page at BerkeleyHallClub.com.

COURSE F ACTION

Welcome to Course of Action, a recurring look at how your support of the Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation is igniting real change right here in our community, via 20+ grants to non-profit partners. Each issue, we will spotlight a grant outcome that shows how generosity from Members like you is more than just giving – it’s making a lasting impact in our greater community.

Your generous support of the Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation helped fund a grant to The Deep Well Project, backing their Livable Housing Initiative and critical home repair program. As a result, 60 low-income Bluffton residents are now living in safer, more stable, and more comfortable homes –

a real, local difference made possible by your contributions.

Founded in 1973 to dig wells for safe drinking water on Hilton Head Island, The Deep Well Project has grown into a vital source of emergency assistance across the Lowcountry – and your support continues to fuel its mission.

For 40 years, Mrs. G has called her house a home – a place she raised her children, built memories, and stood tall through life’s many challenges.

A dedicated health care worker, Mrs. G spent her life caring for others. But her own journey has taken a difficult turn. Cancer and scoliosis have limited her ability to work and brought financial strain. At 66 years old, she continues to fight for her independence.

To make matters worse, her aging HVAC system – already on its last leg – finally gave out. Summers became unbearable. Winters, bone-chilling. She sought help from several agencies, but the funding just wasn’t enough to cover everything.

Thanks to your compassion, Mrs. G received the final support she needed to repair her heating and cooling system. She can now stay safe and comfortable in the home she loves.

JULY 7 | 3PM | THE VERANDAH

“The Girl with Seven Names” by David

An extraordinary insight into life under one of the world's most ruthless and secretive dictatorships –and the story of one woman's terrifying struggle to avoid capture/repatriation and guide her family to freedom. As a child growing up in North Korea, Hyeonseo Lee was one of millions trapped by a secretive and brutal communist regime.

Her home on the border with China gave her some exposure to the world beyond the confines of the Hermit Kingdom and, as the famine of the 1990s struck, she began to realize she had been brainwashed her entire life. Aged seventeen, she decided to escape North Korea. She could not have imagined it would be 12 years before she was reunited with her family. Review: Harper Collins Publishers

AUGUST 4 | 3PM | THE VERANDAH

“The Husbands” by Holly Gramazio

An exuberant debut, The Husbands delights in how we navigate life, love, and choice. When Lauren returns home to her London flat one night, she’s greeted at the door by her husband, Michael. There’s only one problem – she’s not married. She’s never seen him before. But according to her friends, her much-improved decor, and photos on her phone, they’ve been together for years. As Lauren tries to puzzle this out, Michael goes to the attic to change a light bulb and disappears. In his place, a new man emerges, and a slightly altered life re-forms around her. Realizing her attic is creating an infinite supply of husbands, Lauren wonders: If swapping lives is as easy as changing a lightbulb, how do you know you’ve taken the right path?

erkeley Hall’s Spring Season was brought to a close with several great tournaments. The MemberMember was played in late April with wonderful weather on both days and both courses looking fabulous! Once again, we had two exciting shootouts to decide the Member-Member Champions and it was certainly an exciting finish. And in May, we had our Mixed Member-Guest, and plenty of Club Championship play! The courses were prepared wonderfully for all the events, and it was great to

see so many members out enjoying friendly camaraderie on the courses. We now look forward to a busy Fall season starting with the North-South Challenge in late September.

As the summer months roll by, we will also experience the usual Lowcountry thunderstorms. Please take shelter if you feel that the conditions warrant it, and if you hear the lightning alert siren you should take cover immediately. Once the siren sounds, there should be no further play or practice

until the ‘all clear’ siren has sounded. And, of course, it will become very hot at certain times during the summer so please make sure you are keeping hydrated as best you can. There are many coolers around the course with water, and there are iced towels in coolers out on both courses.

The Summer Reciprocal Program is underway. Please contact the golf shop if you would like to make a tee time at one of the other local courses during the summer months.

It’s about enjoying the game even if you’ve never played before,” laughs Carol Garanich, one of the founding members and current HAGG Commissioner. Now with nearly 80 participants, their success isn’t just measured by improved golf swings – it’s evident in how quickly new members are made to feel right at home. AERIFICATION KEEPS US IN TOP SHAPE

Aerification is one of the most important things we do each year to keep the course healthy and performing the way we all expect it to. While it may not be your favorite sight – stepping onto the green and seeing a sea of little holes, sand everywhere, and wondering if someone got a little carried away with a pitchfork. But aerification delivers long-term course benefits that are essential.

Simply put, it’s a mechanical process that relieves soil compaction, improves drainage, and gets oxygen down to the root zone, kind of like giving the turf a deep breath! Over time, traffic from mowers, carts, and golfers compact the soil. When that happens, water can’t drain properly, nutrients can’t move through the profile, and the roots get stressed. Aerification opens things back up.

Depending on the season and what the turf needs, we’ll either pull cores,

use solid tines, or go with needle tines – each has a purpose. Core aerification removes plugs of soil and helps reduce organic matter buildup. Solid tines create air channels without removing material. The type we choose depends on timing, weather, and the needs of the specific surface.

Nobody’s pretending aeration makes the course better the next day. It’s a temporary inconvenience with long-term benefits. Healthier roots mean better playing conditions, improved drought and disease tolerance, and a more consistent surface across the seasons.

We schedule aerification around weather patterns, growing windows, and recovery times. We also plan it with as little interference to play as possible, which isn’t always easy when you’re dealing with two golf courses and the mercurial Lowcountry summer.

“Aerification is part of a larger strategy to keep our courses in top shape for years to come.”
– Adam Miller

Forego Aerification? We could. For a year. Maybe two. And then we’d all wonder why the greens aren’t draining, why they’re soft and spongy, and why recovery from stress takes longer. Think of aerification like preventative maintenance, it’s cost-effective and much better than dealing with a breakdown later.

At the end of the day, aerification is part of a larger strategy to keep the courses at Berkeley Hall in top shape not just for next weekend’s game, but for years to come.

We appreciate your patience during the process.
