Edward Rowlandson Group Managing Director RO Group

The RO Group, a family-owned trading business established in 1932, has always prided itself on venturing into a diverse array of interests. Today, the business encompasses commercial property, housebuilding, land trading, renewable energy and venture capital. Edward Rowlandson shares insights into the RO Group’s various ventures and its commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.

Q What do you do?

The RO Group is a multifaceted familyowned trading business. Our commercial property division, RO Real Estate, has developed over 1.1 million square feet to date and currently manages 300,000 square feet of office, industrial and retail space. Metis Homes, our award-winning housebuilder, is dedicated to crafting modern homes with traditional values. Our portfolio boasts bespoke, high-quality homes in diverse settings, from traditional rural properties to contemporary town centre schemes. Additionally, RO Capital Partners is our venture capital arm, focusing on early-stage investments in Proptech and Cleantech, where we are keen on driving innovation in utility-focused areas and providing a real estate platform to support our investee companies. Our youngest venture, RO Land, is unlocking the development potential of land, promoting greenfield and brownfield sites for various uses, including renewables.

Q Who do you work for?

I have the privilege of leading the RO Group. We are driven by a commitment to create value for all our varied stakeholders, and that is what makes my role so fulfilling.

To become an engaged member of a network of businesses that share our commitment to growth, innovation and sustainability in the region. The Chamber provides a fantastic platform for both knowledge exchange and networking, and champions local issues.

Through the opening of doors and personal introductions to valuable connections and opportunities. We have been able to foster meaningful relationships, share experiences, and gain insights that have positively benefitted our various ventures.

Q What do you think is the

Technology and climate change are the two biggest challenges impacting business both today and for years to come. That being said, they also bring tremendous opportunity. Businesses need to continually adapt, innovate, and ensure they remain relevant in the face of these changes.

Q What support do you want from government?

Government support plays a pivotal role in fostering a business-friendly environment. We would appreciate measures that incentivise sustainability initiatives and technological advancements, such as tax incentives for green initiatives.

Q How confident are you that

Starting a business can be a daunting yet rewarding journey. My advice is to always remain agile and adaptable recognising you need the support of others to achieve. Be open to innovation, embrace change, and never underestimate the power of networking and collaboration. Your business will only thrive if it aligns with your values. Be in business to do business.

We are cautiously optimistic about the coming year. The current economic climate is challenging, but we are well-positioned to adapt and grow. Our diversified portfolio and commitment to innovation and sustainability give us confidence. We remain focused on creating value for all our stakeholders and to contributing to a better, more sustainable world.
