TRESTLEBOARD

FROM THE EAST Brethren, As men, we are influenced and shaped buy the men in our lives. These men, whether intentionally or not, play a large part in determining the men we eventually become. As children we look up to our fathers for guidance. Symbolically, they draw us up as a rough stone from the quarry and begin the process of preparing that stone for the builder’s use. They break off the rough corners of indiscretion and youthful ignorance and eventually send us out into the world as men. As young men, we are also influenced by an athletic coach or club advisor. These men, too, play a role in our development. Sadly, for many of us, that is the extent of our development as men. However, for those of us fortunate enough to find Masonry, we discover that good men can become better men simply by association. Masonry affords each and every one of us an opportunity to grow as men. “Ever ready” is our brother to lend us his hand when we physically need it and his heart and mind when we emotionally need it. They remind us when we stray off path, encourage us when we strive forward and praise us when we succeed. We tell the young initiate that “you get out of Masonry what you put into it”. Many never fully understand that what we speak of is much more mental than physical. Just attending Lodge to extend your hand to another brother in friendship grows the Fraternal bonds we share. Fraternally, Paul H. Schutz, Sr. WM
