Focused – Being focused in patient care is important because patients are the reason why I am here. It also gives a sense of purpose to my life and my community. Being focused, however, means that I have to put aside whatever else is going on in our hospital or global world environment to ensure I’m focused on helping my patients achieve the best quality of life. Emotionally Invested – For physicians to be emotionally invested in our patients, it requires that we put our own needs aside and put the needs of patients and staff at the forefront. Sometimes that means missing dinner or missing time with our families but, at the end of the day, it’s all worth it if our patients have a good outcome and a good experience. Teamwork – Teamwork is important because it takes a village to deliver a best patient experience and sometimes that means we physicians need to pick up a role that is not

customary. For example, one weekend when we had a lot of discharges and the social worker was overwhelmed, I made phone calls to assist her because I recognized that a timely discharge was part of providing a best patient experience. Fun – It’s imperative to have fun doing this because it shows that as a physician I love my job. In situations when a patient is having a tough day, just a smile or a light joke to spark a laugh can be the best medicine I can deliver.
