Fall Prevention Awareness Day Thursday, Sept. 22 | 11am-2pm NorthPointe Atrium Physical therapists will be there to give fall prevention ideas, screenings and more.

I would also like to thank the paramedics and Jennifer in the ER. She was there both times with a hug and kind words.

Nursing Collaborative Practice Corner | By Janelle Dietrich, RN As a nursing preceptor, have you struggled with an orientee? Do you have any suggestions for future nurses' orientation?

The Nursing Collaborative Practice Committee has been exploring the effectiveness of our current orientation process. New tools have been developed and are nearing time of implementation. Each nursing department has been asked to develop a unit specific orientation timeline, listing expectations of preceptees throughout orientation period. The RNs awarded with 2016 Preceptor of the Year awards will be assisting with our presentations. Also, there will be a round table discussion regarding challenges and successes.

All preceptors are required to attend a refresher course in October. Classes will be offered at numerous times including October 3rd at 10am, October 3rd at 12pm, October 4th at 8am, October 10th at 10am, October 10th and 12pm, and October 19th at 8am.

Classes will be held in the front of the Auditorium and will last approximately one hour. Refreshments will be provided during these times. We look forward to seeing you there!

Thanks to the organizing efforts of many people, the United Way fundraising drive is on its way to our $100,000 goal!

BHS will soon be conducting another system-wide engagement survey. Surveys are conducted every two years to learn employees’ and providers’ thoughts on their working “experience” at Beloit Health System. The survey will again be administered by Press Ganey and will be open from Monday, September 19 to midnight on Sunday, October 2.

By completing the engagement survey, you will provide valuable information so your work unit leader and the organization can better understand what we need to partner together on to improve and what things we are doing such an awesome job on (as a work unit or as a health system) that it merits celebrating!

It’s official. The canines love their new job as Pet Therapy volunteers for Beloit Health System. The first day “on the job” both Jack (a Golden Retriever) and Nellie (a LabRetriever mix) were petted, stroked, loved, adored and made to feel like kings and queens. Who wouldn’t love that job?

enjoyed their visits. Some of them were in the waiting room, others were receiving their chemotherapy treatments. All of them were pleased to take a moment from their illness to see a wagging tail and a “smiling” dog.

“I am actually a pet-sitter, so I love dogs,” commented one of the patients who had just received radiation therapy. Both dogs recognized a dog-lover and vied for her attention. “They can come visit me anytime.”

Another patient, a roofer by trade, was receiving his chemo treatment and then heading back out on the job. He gave the dogs lots of hugs and attention. Jack the Retriever, loved and adored him in return.

“I think our first day went very well,” commented Terri. “We were careful to be sure the patients wanted a canine visit, the nurses were very helpful, and the dogs were well behaved. I think we made an impact on the patients and they knew we were there to make their stay more enjoyable.”

Now the next question… how did the patients like it? Well, I believe it was a success from everyone’s perspective- the dogs, the patients and the pet’s owners.

Terri Harmon, RN and Cody Monyelle, RN, the volunteer coordinators of the new Pet Therapy program, wandered through the Beloit Cancer Center in late August to get the program started. There were at least ten patients and family members who

The volunteer Pet Therapy program is designed to assist patients in recovery or help patients cope with a health issue.

Terri and Cody are still accepting certified pet therapy animals and owners to fill up their schedule. 

Dogs must have a Pet Therapy certification and must be identified as a Therapy Dog when in the hospital.



Dogs have to be one year old, and the handler/ owner must have had the dog at least 3 months.



Handlers must abide by Beloit Health System rules and be an employee or join the volunteer organization where criteria will be shared.

You recently took care of a patient named Gladys Charland, she is a 95 year old who started out seeing her providers at Beloit Clinic. She and her family were very impressed with everyone they encountered during her clinic visits. Gladys then had to be admitted to the hospital with a suspected stroke. Her care here was excellent and again she and her family stated that everyone that they interacted with was professional and provided quality, compassionate care.

The annual flu shot season is almost here.

A seasonal flu shot is mandatory for all BHS employees & all who work in any capacity at BMH & our outreach centers.

UNLESS----you have turned in a medical exemption form to Human Resources.

Here is a list of the times, dates & locations of the flu shot clinics for BHS employees, volunteers, doctors, etc.

2. After my clinics are over---if you have missed getting your flu shot with me----you can then call one of the Occupational Heath Centers & make an appt with them to receive your flu shot.

I have been planning my retirement for a while and will enjoy some free time when it happens next year. I will be able to spend more time with my family (especially my grandchildren), but I will certainly miss all of you. Retirement is still six months away, and I am excited to continue working with you until then. We have a lot to do and there is no one I would rather work with than all of you!

3. You may NOT expect to get your flu shot at Occ Health before the clinics are over.

4. If you are on vacation during these clinics----you will have to wait till after Oct 18 to get your flu shot when you call Occ Health.

5. If you receive your flu shot somewhere else---for instance----your doctor, another employer, pharmacy, school etc.----send a copy to me (Julie Lautenbach) at Lee Lane.

6. If you need a COPY of your flu shot for another employer or school----please ask for it right away after you get your shot.

That is the easiest way to get a copy of it.

7. Outreach centers----Will be receiving information regarding flu shots via email.

Advanced Joint Care Center Opens

The new Advanced Joint Replacement Center offers patient-centered, coordinated care for joint replacement patients. The ribbon cutting was part of an internal launch to formally announce the program that has been in development for more than a year.

Beloit Health System was proud to participate in this year’s National Night Out event in Beloit showcasing the SANE, Trauma, Cancer and Hospice programs.

Organized by the Rock County Sheriff’s office, Beloit Police, Beloit Area Crime Stoppers, Beloit Fire Department, and law enforcement from across the area the event garnered hundreds of residents to join law enforcement from the area in a fun, festive and educational night.

Picnics are always fun. A romantic little basket for two people under an oak tree.

Maybe some sandwiches, apples and homemade cookies? Well, try organizing a picnic for 1,400 people at 14 different locations! That is what the staff of Beloit Health System’s Hospitality Department did for the August 19th United Way picnic.

As with many picnics, the weather forced the festivities indoors, as Friday morning torrential rains closed the Neese Garden on the hospital’s third floor. However, that didn’t stop the fantastic food or fun for those who enjoyed the pulled pork, hamburgers, roasted potatoes and delicious broccoli salad- plus lots of yummy extras at the annual picnic to kick off our United Way pacesetter fundraiser.

Tom Sullivan, Director of Hospitality Services, provided us with the following commentary to give us a glimpse of what goes on “behind the scenes” to accomplish this feat.

Organization and set up starts with Kay Kramar – the Czar of Organization.

Seriously, we couldn’t do it without her.

Kay begins the organization process about two months prior to the event.

Then I setup the ordering sheets based on the menu items chosen and my recipes.

We gather staffing info from the 14 different areas that are part of the Beloit Health System. For the hospital, we figure 900 persons for the employees, guests, and visitors between lunch and dinner, plus an additional 60 for third staff we feed the night of August 18th.

Following are the outreach facilities and the number of people we anticipated feeding.

Janesville Medical Center -4 Riverside Terrace -25 Westside Clinic - 6 NorthPointe Health & Wellness - 80 NorthPointe Terrace - 10 Occupational Health - 20 Darien - 4 Clinton Clinic - 6

Beloit College - 4 At Home Healthcare - 22 Cancer Care - 20 Hospice - 35 Beloit Clinic - 250 Total number of people served: 1,446 Putting together all the components of packaging and sending food to the outreach areas, as well as all the condiments and beverages needed, takes organization to another level.

Kelly Hill was the person in charge of preorganization and execution of sorting and delivering to the pickup person for the outreach area.

Cooks who are involved with cooking and guaranteeing on-time delivery of food to all areas are Lori Hanson, Dawn Gerloff, Tina Weigelt, and Aly Garvey.

Food Service Workers included Diana Guernsey, Sarah Holmes, Jalisa Royster, Alicia Cruz, Cindy Kunkel, Amanda McCallips, Shelley Montero, Brittany Quezada, Stephany Martin, Valeria Ceballos, Lovely Maquiling, Rosalyn Maquiling, Shauna Harmon, Kristen Toon.

Meanwhile, and the most vitally important

to Nutrition Services, is food service to patients continues uninterrupted and ontime by all staff.

The amounts of food we ordered for the United Way Picnic included:  240 pounds of Broccoli  40 pounds bacon  30 pounds Craisins  120 pounds Mayonnaise  390 pounds of potatoes  30 pounds of Gardenburger  1,080 packages of potato chips  2100 cookies  350 pounds of Pork  350 pounds of Hamburger  1656 cans of soda  4000 packets of ketchup  1000 packets of mustard  1680 hamburger buns And of course, all of the time and effort it took to turn these ingredients into the finally prepared food for everyone to enjoy. Thank you to everyone who assisted in this process. This is just an example of the many special events and daily responsibilities of this dedicated staff.

We hope you enjoyed the day and now know a little more about the people who made it happen.

Bacon & Broccoli Salad 4 oz bacon 5 cups small broccoli florets 16 Tbs mayonnaise 1 Tbs cider vinegar 1/4 cup chopped onion 4 Tbs sugar 12 Tbs Craisins 1/2 cup sunflower kernels 1. Cut the bacon into small pieces and cook over medium heat just until crisp; drain on paper towels.

2. Bring a large saucepan of salted water to a boil. Add the broccoli and blanch until bright green and slightly softened, about 3 minutes.

Drain well, run under cold water to stop the cooking, and drain again.

3. In a mixing bowl, combine the mayonnaise, vinegar, onion, sugar and raisins. Add the broccoli and toss the coat with the dressing. Refrigerate for 1 hour.

4. Just before servings, fold in the sunflower kernels and the bacon pieces. Serve immediately.

It is not just our subscribers who benefit, but their families, caregivers, neighbors and friends all feel more secure knowing their loved one has the safety of the AlertLine service.

AlertLine is honored to have recently received two wonderful letters from current AlertLine subscribers.

The first letter came from a lovely lady who has had the AlertLine service for over six years. The other letter was sent to Beloit Daily News by a new subscriber, Esther.

Esther was extremely pleased to know she could rely on such an important service

locally, without having to subscribe to a service with operators half way across the country.

The AlertLine service began at Beloit Hospital 32 years ago and is succeeding today with immense gratitude from the community, our employees, and our great volunteers.
