annual report

Not the same person, not the same river.
At the end-of-the-year Moving Up Assembly, I reminded those gathered of the Greek philosopher Heraclitis’s suggestion that “no person steps into the same river twice, for the person has changed and so, too, has the river.”
The mighty ‘river’ of Belmont Day— students, faculty, parents, grandparents, and other friends of the school—certainly experienced a fair deal of change last year as we moved responsibly towards the classroom experiences we enjoyed before the pandemic. As for the people, most notably the young people we aim to inspire and challenge each day, they changed for the better: growing, playing, learning, and leading us all back to the familiar sights and sounds of a Belmont Day education.
To further extend the metaphor, COVID-19 protocols and the challenges of protecting our community’s health were still impacting the river last fall. A surge had us returning to school to contend with many of the same complexities that had
impacted the 2020-2021 school year. As the year progressed, however, and due to the excellent work of our nursing team of Liz LaRocque and Dario Azzone, we were able to loosen restrictions safely. Traditions and routines began to return: Sharing Assemblies, Friday Night Lights soccer games, art classes in the Barn studios, recess play with mixed cohorts, and the exciting prospect of a full return to a more ‘normal’ experience across the board. The river was changing before our eyes.
So, too, were we changing. By spring, students were inches taller, strong mathematicians and readers, improved musicians and performers, and more empathic citizens. After a year of maintaining a six-foot distance between desks,
isolated cohorts, and silent lunches, the faculty embraced the newfound opportunities for connection and collaboration. Learning spaces began to look more like the innovative environments one would expect to see at Belmont Day. And before long, more familiar traditions returned—an in-person Thanksgiving Assembly, Friday Night Hoops that welcomed the first visiting fans of the year, and the Spring Concert that showcased the talents of our young musicians and ensembles before a packed house in the Downing Gym. In the classrooms, Fundations, BeeBot coding, and Singapore math were in full swing for our youngest learners. After Capstone, our eighth grade students took a long-awaited, well-deserved, and inaugural trip to the
Southwest to study the science of Zion National Park, the Grand Canyon, and the Native American history of the region. A reimagined Freedom Night for our sixth grade students followed, and then, middle schoolers were welcomed back to Coolidge Hall for lunch. By year’s end, as members of the Class of 2022 rang the bell to announce the completion of their Belmont Day educations, there was little doubt that while the people and the river had changed, there were promising signs of a return to something familiar.
Meanwhile, through the extraordinary work of our development, communications, and admissions teams, Belmont Day had a banner year with record-setting support of the annual fund and applications at our pre-kindergarten and sixth grade entry points at their highest levels.
We are very grateful for the generosity of our community that ensured Belmont Day would be well-resourced to respond to the challenges of the pandemic. The impacts of learning loss and concerns about mental health and social development playing out nationally, especially for students in marginalized communities, were also felt at BDS. The school’s commitment to fostering equity,
inclusion, and belonging and a partnership with psychologist Dr. Julia Burch Martin has been critical in guiding our support for students and families. In its second year, our Summer Spark Academic Camp offered academic review and enrichment for children enrolled at other schools.
One thing remained true through the ups and downs of the 2021-22 school year:
Belmont Day’s commitment to its students, the six core values, and our mission to inspire and challenge. As you will see in the pages ahead, we couldn’t have achieved our goals without each of you. Thank you for another great year at Belmont Day.

By giving to the annual fund, our current parents, trustees, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty, and friends invest in the school’s promise to inspire and challenge our young learners and leaders.
Our March Madness Alumni Giving Challenge aimed to encourage alumni participation in the annual fund, and they got in on the madness in a big way. Three events engaged alumni, friends, and current families alike. Chef and food stylist Elle Simone Scott joined us for a presentation in Coolidge Hall about finding your voice and using it; the
Claremont Trio featuring alumnae Emily Bruskin Yarbrough ’92 and Julia Bruskin Wunsch ’92 presented a virtual concert; and Alasdair MacKenzie ’11 engaged in a conversation with us about his band Hush Club and the influence of his Belmont Day experience on his music career. (See “A Musician Brings Creativity to Art and Business” on page 14 for the story.)
Our alumni continue to inspire us through the amazing things they do and their continued engagement with and support of BDS. Special acknowledgment goes to the Class of 2021 for being the top class for participation during March Madness. Thank you to all those who participated for being outstanding and committed members of our community.

Tuition and fees do not cover the full cost of a Belmont Day education. There is a gap between tuition and the cost of educating a student in all independent schools. At BDS, that gap is $5,000. Our annual fund contributes towards making up that difference, along with income from the endowments and other revenue-generating programs. Philanthropy typically accounts for 7% of the cost of a student’s Belmont Day experience. In 2021-22 our community strengthened its commitment to prioritize BDS, and as a result, support for the annual fund accounted for 10.3% of the school’s operating budget.
Our initiatives supporting equity, inclusion, and belonging span over two decades, beginning with the Families for Diversity group in 1995, leading to the years-long work of Braiding Different Strands, to the launch in the 2021-22 school year of more than a dozen social identity groups for parents and students. EIB efforts in 2021-22 included four faculty trainings and the development of an EIB curricular strand.
We elevated our students’ experience and interaction with the Erskine Library by introducing access to online books and audiobooks. To meet the needs of our growing community, the school expanded the collection, added interactive resources, and grew the team to include a library support position.
The Annette Raphel Scholarship for Leadership and Diversity, a merit scholarship granted to a middle school student of color from Boston, now has graduated four scholars and enrolled a total of eight students since 2017. In addition, new funding ensured the enrollment of a new scholar in the 2021-22 school year.
Through the pandemic, we expanded access to learning through 1:1 devices in kindergarten through eighth grade and integrated four adaptive learning platforms. We have continued to integrate innovation in every classroom and the Erskine Library, providing a more diverse and accessible selection of resources for our students and faculty.
We enhanced our well-established health and wellness program that has been a part of our curriculum for over a decade. Our teachers’ commitment to social-emotional learning provided critical support to our students during a year when the pandemic still impacted the school.

BDS Fest: Fall Harvest and Spring Fest: A Celebration of Cultures and Traditions
Countless parent volunteers joined the development team to bring joy and connection to the forefront during another year shadowed by COVID restrictions and uncertainty. These two events anchored the school year with celebrations that brought our community closer together. At every opportunity to be back on campus, the community
gathered together with excitement and eagerness for connection and to support the school values that foster their children’s learning at BDS.
“Families volunteered to run the field games in the fall, and others hosted tables to share their culture in the spring. Throughout both events, our students were joyful and caring to one another and played together to the last possible minute.”
Thank you to everyone who stepped up to ensure these events would be successful—we appreciate you!
“Families volunteered to run the field games in the fall, and others hosted tables to share their culture in the spring. Throughout both events, our students were joyful and caring to one another and played together to the last possible minute.”
The Eighth Grade Legacy Campaign is a long-standing tradition and an opportunity for our eighth grade families to honor their child’s time at Belmont Day. Over the years, our families have made a legacy gift to demonstrate their deep appreciation for the Belmont Day education their child has received and their dedication to our mission. Through engaging in a collaborative selection process, eighth grade families take a hands-on approach to their legacy gift.
This tradition has made a tremendous impact throughout the community
In June 2022, a group of returning and new Belmont Day faculty members attended the annual three-day Multicultural Teaching Institute (MTI) conference. MTI is a conference designed by educators for educators where participants learn hands-on teaching tools to enrich their classrooms while expanding their ability to critically evaluate their own multicultural teaching practices in their classrooms.
by supporting initiatives such as the Parent Fund for Excellence in Teaching, the purchase of the Claflin Field scoreboard, an HVAC system for the Kiva, and contributing to the COVID-19 Relief Fund to purchase technology tools for on- and off-site learning.
The parents of the Class of 2022 came together to leave a lasting legacy for the Belmont Day community by raising funds to support excellence in teaching through professional development opportunities for faculty. The families of our largest graduating class of 45 students sought to
raise $250,000. With 95.2% participation, they raised a remarkable $220,322. The continued commitment and support of our parents shined through yet again, and we could not be more grateful. Eighth grade families found creative ways to connect and celebrate, despite another year of navigating COVID restrictions, thanks to the outstanding leadership of Legacy Campaign co-chairs Audra Dainora P ’17 ’19 ’22 and Sasha Ebrahimi P ’22. We thank Audra, Sasha, and all of the eighth grade parents for their dedication to the mission and legacy of Belmont Day.
We are thankful for the continued support of our community in celebrating the culture of giving at Belmont Day. Each gift and every amount helped us reach our goal of 150 gifts in 24 hours! We had an impressive number of donors increase their impact by engaging with fun challenges offered to the community. Our supporters rose to each challenge and inspired us once again with 249 gifts that raised over $276,000 for the annual fund. Thanks to all of those who participated and made it a success.
During the months of March and April, the development team, with the support of parent volunteers, brought warmth to the community with the BDS Love Campaign. As the campus reopened for more indoor engagement, the BDS Love Campaign offered opportunities for families to connect. We were delighted to reimagine parent visiting days and re-introduce friend-raising events and parent education opportunities. The campaign culminated in the BDS Spring Fest: A Celebration of Cultures and Traditions that sparked many conversations, connections, and moments of joy!

The BDS Love Campaign included:
Classroom sharing visits for lower school parents and shadow visits for middle school parents
Weekend socials for families
An evening cooking class co-hosted by the friendraiser committee of the parents’ association

The Zofnass Environmental Award will be announced annually to celebrate a program supported by this endowment: 2019–20 Let the Garden Thrive; 2018–19 Initiating Schoolwide Composting Program; 2017–18 Building a Pollinating Garden; 2016–17 Establishing a Beehive Curriculum.
On behalf of the development committee, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to each of you for demonstrating philanthropic support to Belmont Day School’s 2021-22 Annual Fund campaign.
Due to the generosity of parents, grandparents, trustees, faculty, and others, we are excited to report that we surpassed our annual fund goal of $800,000 by raising $1,227,000, with overall board and faculty participation of 100% and current family participation of 96%.
The annual fund is an essential component of the financial health of our school. The annual fund helps bridge the gap between revenues and expenses. It also gives Belmont Day the financial flexibility to offer an enriching learning environment through innovative programming in academics, athletics, after school enrichment classes, and visual and performing arts.
Whether you volunteered your time, shared your talents, or contributed financially to the annual fund last year, you had a far-reaching impact on the school’s continued dedication to providing excellence in education.
Thank you all for supporting Belmont Day School, ensuring its commitment to the whole child, and its core values, which are captured in its mission. Our community is the number one reason for our success!
Warmly,
“Whether you volunteered your time, shared your talents, or contributed financially to the annual fund last year, you had a far-reaching impact on the school’s continued dedication to providing excellence in education.”

The 1927 Young Alumni Society was established to recognize and honor young alumni who prioritize Belmont Day by making a gift to the annual fund. Alumni join this society by making gifts each year with the hope of inducting them into our Bell and Laurel Society which recognizes donors who have given consecutively to the annual fund for ten or more years.

The 1927 Circle was established to recognize and honor individuals who make provisions in their estate for a gift to the school. Planned gifts can be made through a bequest or by naming Belmont Day as a beneficiary of part or all of a retirement asset. Planned gifts can help a donor make a meaningful contribution without relinquishing current assets and also can help donors avoid income and estate taxes.
If you would like to learn more about joining The 1927 Circle, please contact Director of Development Jessica Halton at jhalton@belmontday.org.
