At Belmont Day, we are dedicated to preparing our students for academic success and lives filled with purpose, resilience, and meaningful contribution. This commitment feels especially relevant today as we navigate an ever-changing world, where challenges like rising anxiety call us to respond with empathy, thoughtfulness, and a renewed sense of purpose.
During Grandparents and Special Friends Day, I reflected on Jonathan Haidt’s book, The Anxious Generation. Haidt’s themes—independence, play, connection, and resilience—are relevant and deeply aligned with our mission at Belmont Day. They echo the values our students’ grandparents cherished in their childhoods. These themes continue to inspire our efforts to equip students with the tools they need to thrive.
Curiosity, resilience, community, integrity, and joy align with our mission and guide how we teach, nurture, and inspire our students so they are prepared to meet today’s challenges and tomorrow’s opportunities with confidence and compassion.
The rapid pace of change, fueled by advancements like artificial intelligence, requires a spirit of curiosity. At BDS, we encourage students to ask bold questions, explore innovative ideas, and embrace learning as a lifelong endeavor. This curiosity equips them to adapt, innovate, and contribute meaningfully to an increasingly complex world.
Haidt underscores the critical importance of resilience in helping young people navigate challenges confidently. At BDS, we empower our students to embrace setbacks as opportunities for growth, teaching them to persevere and tackle difficulties head-on. Whether solving intricate math problems or engaging with thought-provoking texts, they build the determination to thrive academically and in life.
One of the most powerful takeaways from Grandparents and Special Friends Day was the value of connection. At BDS, the community is at the heart of what
we do. Students learn the importance of empathy, collaboration, and caring for others, building relationships that will serve them well as future leaders and contributors to a better world.
In an increasingly fast-paced and complex world, honesty, respect, and responsibility are more important than ever. At BDS, we empower students to act with character and make a positive impact on the people they interact with and the communities they belong to.
Finally, our grandparents reminded us of the wonder and simplicity of childhood. At BDS, we celebrate the joy of discovery, creativity, and play. While we prepare students for the future, we also ensure they thrive in the present, experiencing the excitement and fulfillment of learning and personal growth.
We honor the wisdom of the past while embracing future opportunities. Our mission to inspire helps us foster learners and leaders ready to contribute meaningfully to the world. With the remarkable support of our families and faculty, we empower students to rise to every challenge, lead with character, and succeed well beyond their years at BDS.
Best, Brendan

“Your support elevates experiences and broadens opportunities for our learners and educators alike.”
Year after year, your generosity—through philanthropy, volunteerism, and active participation—has profoundly impacted the Belmont Day School Annual Fund.
We set out to raise $968,000, and together, we exceeded that ambitious goal, reaching an outstanding $1,018,300! This success reflects the strength of our community and our collective commitment to advancing Belmont Day's mission.
The school continues to flourish because of the steadfast dedication of current and alumni parents, grandparents, alums, faculty, and friends. Your support elevates experiences and broadens opportunities for our learners and educators alike, enriching every aspect of BDS—from academic programs, the arts, and athletics to leadership initiatives, cutting-edge technology, and innovative teaching practices. These investments cultivate a lifelong passion for learning and empower our students to explore, create, and excel.
As chair of the development committee, I extend my deepest gratitude for your generosity in all its forms. Your unwavering commitment to our students, teachers, and the enduring legacy of Belmont Day is truly inspiring. Thank you for being an integral part of this extraordinary community.
With warmest thanks,
Carolyn Atinizian P ’27 ’31 Trustee, Chair of the Development Committee
YOUR GIFTS GROW LEADERS —EVERY DAY. $1,018,300 RAISED
YOUR SUPPORT impacts every aspect of the BDS experience and makes our commitment to
Tuition and fees do not cover the full cost of a Belmont Day education. There is a gap between tuition and the cost of educating a student in all independent schools. At BDS, that gap is $5,000. Our annual fund contributes toward making up that difference, along with income from the endowments and other
revenue-generating programs. Philanthropy typically accounts for 6% of the cost of a student’s Belmont Day experience. In 2023–24 our community strengthened its commitment to prioritize BDS, and, as a result, support for the annual fund accounted for 4.8% of the school’s operating budget.
Thank you for an incredible, record-breaking Giving Day!
Because of you, we far surpassed our goal of 225 gifts in twenty-four hours. Our remarkable community stepped forward with full hearts on December 12, committing over 293 gifts and $429,178 to support the annual fund. Thank you for believing in BDS and advancing our mission forward with your generous support.
We are grateful to our community for rallying for BDS on Giving Day and every day. Current families, grandparents, alumni, parents of alumni, faculty, trustees, and friends were inspired to shape our students’ future academic, athletic, artistic, and social lives. Thank you for continuing to prioritize the future of Belmont Day—we feel your support and love.
Students are all smiles when grandparents and special friends are in the house! Thank you to the nearly 200 guests who joined us for classroom visits and a special Sharing Assembly.
The Eighth Grade Legacy Campaign is a longstanding tradition and an opportunity for our eighth grade families to demonstrate their appreciation for their child’s education at Belmont Day and their dedication to our mission.
Through engaging in a collaborative selection process, eighth grade families take a hands-on approach to their legacy gift. Parents of the Class of 2024 came together to raise funds to support the
Class of 2024 Wellness Center as part of a future capital project.
The future Class of 2024 Wellness Center will host a variety of wellness offerings, such as yoga, dance, meditation, fitness classes, and more.
This gift complements the parents of the Class of 2023 gift that funded the school’s Campus Vision Plan.
Our parents’ continued commitment, dedication, and generosity shined through yet again, with 89% of the graduating families contributing to the campaign. We are especially grateful to Legacy Campaign co-chairs Elise Bayard Franklin P ’24 ’28 and Jen Holleran P ’24. Their tireless
efforts and inspiring leadership were instrumental in the campaign’s success.
We thank them and all of the Class of 2024 parents for their meaningful and lasting support of Belmont Day.
The Class of 2024 allocated their legacy gift to creating a Cultural Culinary Series to celebrate the rich diversity of our community through a series of curated lunch meals offered by the Belmont Day kitchen periodically throughout the school year. Students and families will be encouraged to share aspects of their culture by contributing menu ideas and recipes. The series will continue every year to honor the Class of 2024 and offer authentic experiences of learning about and tasting new foods and flavors.

The Young Alumni Society was established to recognize and honor young alumni who prioritize Belmont Day by making a gift to the annual fund. Alumni join this society by making gifts each year with the hope of inducting them into our Bell and Laurel Society which recognizes donors who have given consecutively to the annual fund for ten or more years.

The 1927 Circle was established to recognize and honor individuals who make provisions in their estates for a gift to the school. Planned gifts can be made through a bequest or by naming Belmont Day as a beneficiary of part or all of a retirement asset. Planned gifts can help a donor make a meaningful contribution without relinquishing current assets and also can help donors avoid income and estate taxes.
If you would like to learn more about joining The 1927 Circle, please contact the Development Office at 617-932-3890.

Through the generosity of alumni, parents, and friends, Belmont Day’s endowments and reserves continue to grow and provide vital support to the day-to-day experience of our students and faculty. The investment committee currently oversees funds exceeding $17.7 million in unrestricted and restricted funds in the endowment and operating reserves.
Established in 2003 by a Belmont Day family, this endowment supports a unique and central aspect of the Belmont Day curriculum: helping children to become strong citizens and effective leaders in their communities. Belmont Day School has a long history of nurturing community leadership through such activities as student-led community service, interpersonal skills curriculum, faculty development, and serviceoriented class trips. Proceeds from the Acorn Endowment provide consistent funding to support this tradition.
Established in 2017 by a Belmont Day family, this endowment funds diversity programming and initiatives for our students, faculty, and families.
Francine Brosens and Catherine Brosens
Francis ’75 Endowment for Library Technology
Established in 2017 by the Brosens and Francis families and in honor of Belmont Day teachers Francine Brosens (French teacher, 1964–75) and Catherine Brosens Francis ’75 (world language teacher, technology specialist, 2004–18), this endowment provides funds for technology investment in the Erskine Library.
Established in 2003 by a Belmont Day family and expanded in 2016, this endowment provides funds for educating teachers about the complexities of the learning and reading process, engaging outside speakers and consultants, investing in materials for students and faculty, and developing learning support and enrichment initiatives.
Established in 1994, this endowment provides financial assistance for families who would otherwise not be able to attend Belmont Day School.
Established in 1994, this endowment strengthens the school’s financial reserves, providing lasting security for the school and its current programs as well as preparing for future needs.
Established in 2011, this endowment supports the multidimensional ways that our community comes together to explore, develop, and implement innovation, all the while upholding the values at our heart.
Taj Mirza ’69
Established in 2017 by alumna Zareen Taj Mirza ’69, this endowment provides funds to directly support lower school curriculum and teachers.
Sarah Levine Endowment for Adult and Professional
Established in 1987 and renamed in 1998, this endowment provides grants to faculty and other adults in the community for continuing education, travel, summer curriculum development, research, and other opportunities for enrichment and personal growth.
Established by the parents of the Class of 2005, this endowment supports the needs of the school’s science program, specifically the science laboratory, and ensures the ingenuity and depth of the program.
Established in 2007 by a Belmont Day family, this endowment supports teachers trained in Orton-Gillingham techniques as they instruct students in their reading classes and in their individual tutoring sessions at school.
Established in 2002 by the Ramsey McCluskey Family Foundation, this endowment provides consistent support for the faculty Pioneer Program. These funds also support technology needs in the IMPACT Lab, Palandjian Arts Center, and classrooms.
Established in 2000 by Nancy and David Kaplan in memory of their son Tommy, who would have graduated in the Class of 1981, this endowment provides consistent support for the purchase of library books, periodicals, and curriculum-related materials.
Established in 1988 by an alumna in honor of her music teacher Walter Knight, this endowment supports the salaries of the music faculty and ensures the continued existence of the music program at Belmont Day School.
Established in 2015 by the Zofnass Family—Paul ’59, Joan ’61, and Emily ’63— this endowment funds the school’s environmental sustainability efforts and supports curriculum in the study of environmental science. The yearly exposure to meaningful projects and annual recognition instills lifelong interest and commitment to the environment by our students.
