MESSAGE FROM THE Head of School
Every June, Belmont Day’s Moving Up Assembly closes the school year by recognizing the growth of our students as learners, citizens, and leaders and celebrating their many successes. The joy and wisdom of Frog and Toad, two best friends who enjoy the seasons together, inspired my remarks at the 2023 gathering.
Frog and Toad All Year tells the story of how the friends care for each other and face challenges together in each season. In the fall, they rake each other’s leaves as a surprise, only for the wind to blow them all back; in winter, fearless Frog convinces reluctant Toad to join him sledding, and halfway down the hill, Frog tumbles off the toboggan; on a cold, rainy day Frog looks and looks to find the corner that spring is just around; and in summer, their sticky, melting ice cream cones motivate them to find a beautiful shade tree to settle under side by side.
At Belmont Day, caring for one another, understanding and honoring differences, learning together, and embracing challenges mark our seasons too. In the fall, our students settle into new roles and responsibilities. Pre-kindergarteners uncover many varieties of potatoes in the patch planted by the
previous pre-k class. Students count, sort, and wash the potatoes for the kitchen team to cook and serve at an all-school lunch. The cycle continues when a new crop of potatoes is planted for the incoming pre-k class to discover.
Fourth graders are the elder crossgraded partners for the first time. Sixth graders spend three days at Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center. Middle schoolers engage in leadership by volunteering as admissions ambassadors, considering global issues through Model UN, and through community service. Eighth graders tackle high school applications and shine during Capstone. All of our students exert great energy in caring for others and rising to challenges, just as Frog and Toad do.
We find our stride in winter. From Friday Night Hoops to celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. together as a community
and supporting Pine Street Inn to “Kindergarten Cooks!” the hottest new restaurant started by kindergarten students learning about community helpers, our students had their fair share of joyful learning opportunities. Still, from time to time, we were thrown from our proverbial sleds, faced with new and exciting challenges and opportunities to learn, with our core values to guide the way.
Once spring is “around the corner,” the days move quickly, and we are thriving. We welcome grandparents and special friends to visit. Families are invited to culminating curriculum events that showcase their child’s learning and growth. The Southwest trip challenges our eighth graders as they navigate a new landscape and encounter people with diverse experiences and perspectives. All students and faculty work together on service day to care for and support our communities. Then, before we knew it, another group of extraordinary eighth graders crossed the stage and joined a prestigious group of Belmont Day alumni.
After a brief rest in a shady summer spot with our friends and our ice cream, we are back. We have moved up to our next grades and are ready for our next challenges and new opportunities to care for and help each other. This cycle, integral to Belmont Day, is brought to life for our students with the support we receive all year from our community. Thank you in this season and every season.
Best, Brendan

AUCTION PADDLE RAISE SUPPORTS
Associate Teacher Program
FAMILIES AND FACULTY COMMIT TO IMPROVING ACCESS FOR ASPIRING TEACHERS
For three decades, Belmont Day’s Associate Teacher Program has guided the development of caring teachers who know how to connect with and inspire their students, and its mission has never been more critical. Children, no matter who they are or where they go to school, need educators who seek to know, support, and challenge them by making learning relevant, engaging, and relational.
The Associate Teacher Program, in partnership with Lesley University, offers three programs of study—early childhood education, elementary education, and middle school humanities—each leading to full Massachusetts licensure and a master’s in education degree. Associate teachers spend a one-year residency working shoulder-to-shoulder with mentor faculty in two semester-long classroom placements.
Proceeds from the paddle raise— $86,000—will offset a portion of the $6,000 residency tuition that associate teachers pay to the school and lower a financial barrier that might hold talented people back from participating in the program.
“Associates have such a positive impact on our community. Students benefit from additional support, differentiated instruction, and points of connection throughout their day,” says Director of Development Jessica Halton, who emphasized how grateful the school is to the families and faculty who stepped up to support the program.
In addition to allocating the paddle raise proceeds to the Associate Teacher
Belmont Day has mentored and supported hundreds of associates who now teach and lead in public and independent schools across the country. If we pause to think about how many students have been impacted by those educators, the numbers move up into the thousands. The ripple effect is profound. At last spring’s biennial auction, parents and faculty invested in future generations of associate teachers that will multiply that effect.
Program, the school further demonstrates its commitment to supporting new educators through the Belmont Day Associate Teaching Fellowship. The fellowship covers the full cost of the residency tuition and is awarded annually to an associate teacher of color who demonstrates excellence and a strong commitment to working in the classroom.
By engaging in the work of preparing teachers, mentor teachers also sharpen their own skills by explaining their practice and approach to novice teachers. Second grade teacher Nancy Fell noted, “Being a mentor has absolutely made me a better teacher—every day, I have to think about how and, more important, why I do something. We do so much as teachers based on instinct, but verbalizing my thought process to another person makes me think through things much more deeply. I also get fresh, new ideas from each amazing associate I’ve been lucky enough to mentor.”

HONORING THE SCHOOL’S COMMITMENT DURING THE PANDEMIC Parents’
Association Donates Playful Benches
Ask any parent who had children enrolled at Belmont Day at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and you will hear one word—gratitude.
Safely reopening our doors in September 2020, while so many schools remained closed, was a monumental effort made possible by a legion of community members who worked tirelessly to ensure our students would continue to learn and grow here on campus.
The 2020-21 COVID-19 Relief Campaign allowed the school to take immediate action to meet the unexpected costs of supporting students and faculty, first during remote learning and then after returning to campus.
“Keeping school open as much as possible—I know parents appreciated how school leadership stepped up at a difficult time for schools,” says Gigi Saltonstall, P ’25 ’27, a member of the parents’ association (PA) executive committee. Students were also
grateful, writing to Head of School Brendan Largay, “I can’t believe you’ve been able to pull off getting everybody to be at school. You’re the best, and I don’t know what else to say!” and “You have done so much for the school and keeping it in order. I can’t express how happy I am to see my friends in person, and it is all thanks to you!”
Parents were keen to recognize the perseverance and dedication of the entire community and encouraged the PA to identify a creative way to commemorate this effort. Families contributed generously, and additional funds remaining in the PA coffers at the end of the school year were also earmarked for the commemoration.
With funding available, the next task was choosing an appropriate commemorative marker. Gigi, a practicing landscape architect and cofounder of G2 Collaborative, was recruited to identify options. It seemed appropriate to have
something outside where students had spent so much time with their teachers and cohorts.
Now, five brightly colored tiered benches—two yellow and three blue with charming sheep cut-outs—live on a bed of crushed stone outside the kitchen, where a tent and plastic benches had made an outdoor learning and lunch space during the pandemic. The benches are flanked by large planters filled with perennial grasses and catmint.
The area is intentionally playful and useful, designed to be a space for people to engage with one another. “A teacher could have a lesson with a small group of students, a Capstone advisor could hold a one-on-one meeting, or five parents who just dropped off their children could perch there for a conversation. I love pulling up in the parking lot and seeing students scrambling all over them,” Gigi says. “People are embracing them in a joyful way.”
DID YOU KNOW?
Tuition and fees do not cover the full cost of a Belmont Day education. There is a gap between tuition and the cost of educating a student in all independent schools. At BDS, that gap is $5,000. Our annual fund contributes toward making up that difference, along with income from the endowments and other revenue-generating programs. Philanthropy typically accounts for 6% of the cost of a student’s Belmont Day experience. In 2022–23, our community strengthened its commitment to prioritize BDS, and, as a result, support for the annual fund accounted for 6.2% of the school’s operating budget.
EVERY GIFT, EVERY AMOUNT MAKES AN IMPACT.

EIGHTH GRADE LEGACY CAMPAIGN
PARENTS OF THE CLASS OF 2023
The Eighth Grade Legacy Campaign is a long-standing tradition and an opportunity for our eighth grade families to demonstrate their appreciation for the education that their children have received at Belmont Day and their dedication to our mission. Through engaging in a collaborative selection process, eighth grade families take a hands-on approach to their legacy gift.
Parents of the Class of 2023 raised funds to support a campus vision plan. Architects from designLAB evaluated the campus and school buildings to identify underutilized or inadequately sized spaces for our current community of 334 students. The study revealed a host of possibilities for the school’s consideration, and select projects may become part of a future capital campaign.
and provides a quiet space for faculty to gather, connect, and collaborate.
This class also prioritized reestablishing a dedicated faculty room, as the former faculty room was repurposed for teaching space to de-densify classrooms during the pandemic. The new faculty room is next to the Palandjian Arts Center
Our parents’ continued commitment, dedication, and generosity shined through yet again, with 96% of Class of 2023 families contributing to the campaign. We are particularly grateful for the outstanding leadership of Legacy Campaign cochairs Adnelley Reyes-Colberg P ’23, Jen Cutie P ’23 ’26, and Saré Largay P ’19 ’21 ’23. We thank Adnelley, Jen, Saré, and all of the Class of 2023 parents for their meaningful and lasting support of Belmont Day!
THE CLASS OF 2023
The Class of 2023 allocated their legacy gift to tree planting on campus. On a sunny day in June, the eighth graders were joined by their crossgraded pre-kindergarten partners to plant a beautiful Japanese Maple.

The 1927 Circle was established to recognize and honor individuals who make provisions in their estates for a gift to the school. Planned gifts can be made through a bequest or by naming Belmont Day as a beneficiary of part or all of a retirement asset. Planned gifts can help a donor make a meaningful contribution without relinquishing current assets and also can help donors avoid income and estate taxes.

Be Invested in Our Future
BELMONT DAY ENDOWMENTS
Through the generosity of alumni, parents, and friends, Belmont Day’s endowments and reserves continue to grow and provide vital support to the day-to-day experience of our students and faculty. The investment committee currently oversees funds exceeding $15.9 million in unrestricted and restricted funds in the endowment and operating reserves.
Acorn Endowment
Established in 2003 by a Belmont Day family, this endowment supports a unique and central aspect of the Belmont Day curriculum: helping children to become strong citizens and effective leaders in their communities. Belmont Day School has a long history of nurturing community leadership through such activities as student-led community service, interpersonal skills curriculum, faculty development, and serviceoriented class trips. Proceeds from the Acorn Endowment provide consistent funding to support this tradition.
Diversity Endowment
Established in 2017 by a Belmont Day family, this endowment funds diversity programming and initiatives for our students, faculty, and families.
Francine Brosens and Catherine Brosens
Francis ’75 Endowment for Library Technology
Established in 2017 by the Brosens and Francis families and in honor of Belmont Day teachers Francine Brosens (French teacher, 1964–75) and Catherine Brosens Francis ’75 (world language teacher, technology specialist, 2004–18), this endowment provides funds for technology investment in the Erskine Library.
Endowment for Reading and Learning Support
Established in 2003 by a Belmont Day family and expanded in 2016, this endowment provides funds for educating teachers about the complexities of the learning and reading process, engaging outside speakers and consultants, investing in materials for students and faculty, and developing learning support and enrichment initiatives.
Financial Aid Endowment
Established in 1994, this endowment provides financial assistance for families who would otherwise not be able to attend Belmont Day School.
General Endowment
Established in 1994, this endowment strengthens the school’s financial reserves, providing lasting security for the school and its current programs as well as preparing for future needs.
Lenesa Leana Endowment for Innovative and Collaborative Education
Established in 2011, this endowment supports the multidimensional ways that our community comes together to explore, develop, and implement innovation, all the while upholding the values at our heart.
Miss Zareen Taj Mirza ’69
Endowment for the Lower School
Established in 2017 by alumna Zareen Taj Mirza ’69, this endowment provides funds to directly support lower school curriculum and teachers.
Sarah Levine Endowment for Adult and Professional Development
Established in 1987 and renamed in 1998, this endowment provides grants to faculty and other adults in the community for continuing education, travel, summer curriculum development, research, and other opportunities for enrichment and personal growth.
Science Endowment
Established by the parents of the Class of 2005, this endowment supports the needs of the school’s science program, specifically the science laboratory, and ensures the ingenuity and depth of the program.
Teacher of Reading Endowment
Established in 2007 by a Belmont Day family, this endowment supports teachers trained in Orton-Gillingham techniques as they instruct students in their reading classes and in their individual tutoring sessions at school.
Technology Initiative Endowment
Established in 2002 by the Ramsey McCluskey Family Foundation, this endowment provides consistent support for the faculty Pioneer Program. These funds also support technology needs in the IMPACT Lab, Palandjian Arts Center, and classrooms.
Tommy Kaplan Library Endowment
Established in 2000 by Nancy and David Kaplan in memory of their son
Tommy, who would have graduated in the Class of 1981, this endowment provides consistent support for the purchase of library books, periodicals, and curriculum-related materials.
Walter Knight Music Endowment
Established in 1988 by an alumna in honor of her music teacher Walter Knight, this endowment supports the salaries of the music faculty and ensures the continued existence of the music program at Belmont Day School.
The Zofnass Family Environmental Sustainability Endowment
Established in 2015 by the Zofnass Family—Paul ’59, Joan ’61, and Emily ’63— this endowment funds the school’s environmental sustainability efforts and supports curriculum in the study of environmental science. The yearly exposure to meaningful projects and annual recognition instills lifelong interest and commitment to the environment by our students.
