A Note From The CEO I am thrilled to be bringing you the first edition of our magazine for 2024, with dedication to celebrating the remarkable achievements and milestones we’ve reached with the delivery of our $20 million Centenary Project.

I am proud to be able to share with you some insights into the design intent of this project, the encouraging reception of Martha, our exciting upcoming entertainment series and more about our community involvement and support.

From the very inception of our Centenary Project, we wanted to ensure that every corner of our venue offers breathtaking water views, providing you with an unmatched connection to our lakeside landscape. I’m pleased to report that based on the feedback we’ve received, it’s clear that this vision has been realised. Most importantly, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our Members for their unwavering support and patience throughout the sometimes frustrating construction process. We have created a comprehensive outline of the project on pages 10-14.

The latest addition to our Club, Martha Drink & Dine has quickly become a popular dining destination since its opening in late November. The feedback we’ve received about the venue’s cocktails, Mibrasa based menu and the sensational views it offers has been overwhelmingly positive. If you haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing Martha yet, I urge you to do so. You can read more about Martha on page 28 of this magazine.

Don’t forget that free entertainment is on offer every Friday and Saturday night along with featured headlining shows coming in 2024. Please turn to page 20 to discover our lineup of iconic Australian artists and authentic tribute performances that promise to provide unforgettable experiences for our Members and guests, in our intimate 600 seat Spinnaker Room.

At our core, we remain committed to supporting the community that has embraced us. In this magazine, we recap the organisations we have supported through ClubGrants and sporting sponsorships, reaffirming our dedication to making a positive impact beyond our venue’s walls.

With your renewed membership you will receive our 2024 membership card that pays tribute to our Club’s momentous rebrand, the first in a quarter of a century. From The Racing Deck This season has been truly amazing! In 2023, we started using our new race control facility for the first time, which enhanced our sailing capabilities. We’ve also had more young sailors join our tackers program and are looking at expanding this course offering for our next season. Now, let’s take a look at some of the best moments and accomplishments of the season so far.

O’PEN SKIFFS

CHERUBS

We had four sailors compete in a fleet of 47 boats, with 15 races over 4 days. Congrats to Emma Webb who placed 6th overall and was 1st Female, Zoe Webb 8th place overall and 2nd female. Congrats to Hamish Skelton who placed 13th overall and was 1st place under 12’s and Nic Drummond (who unfortunately due to illness was unable to compete that last day) placed 17th overall and 3rd place under 12’s.

Our sailors had a range of conditions, including 2 days of 15-25 knots. Amazing effort and well done!

Belmont had 4 Cherubs make the trek across country to Perth to compete in the 59th Cherub National Championships held at Perth Dinghy Sailing Club, WA. Once again Belmont came away as National Champions with “Motorboat” 3198 – sailed by Zac Heyes and Peter McLeod taking out the championship in stellar fashion with a perfect score card. In addition, Belmont claimed 2nd place with “Buckle Up Buttercup” Marshall Day and Brett Lancaster and 3rd Place “Gold Digger” Keisha Day and Ryan Lancaster.

FLYING 11S Belmont 16s Sailing Club had 13 Flying 11s compete in the recent 2024 Allen Flying 11 Australian Championships held at RQYS in Brisbane QLD. “Team Belmont” sailed a fantastic regatta in tricky, varying conditions.

Congratulations to “Ondalay” who placed 3rd overall and rounded out the podium.

“Team Belmont” sailed incredibly well with 5 Belmont Flying 11s in the top 10 in what were some tough conditions.

13FT & 16FT SKIFF AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS Belmont 16s Sailing Club had 14 16ft Skiffs head to St George Sailing Club, NSW to battle it out with some of the best sailors. In a tough fleet of boats Skelcon sailed by Henry Makin, Grant Makin and Jordan Makin placed 3rd overall claiming a spot on the podium.

The Historic Rebrand Journey

Uniforms have been refreshed

Marking the first of its kind in over 25 years With extensive member engagement sessions accomplished in 2022 surrounding the anticipated revitalisation plans of the Club, it became clear that the overarching identity of Belmont 16s needed reassessing and a refresh to it’s branding to reflect the Club’s ongoing commitment to innovation while honouring its rich heritage and is delivered in line with our $20 Million + redevelopment.

The new brand identity sees a return to the Clubs full name of Belmont 16s Sailing Club from other previously shortened versions and introduces a modern twist to the Club’s legacy. Featuring a redesigned logo that artfully blends a contemporary rendition of our reimagined original burgee flag, symbolising both our proud sailing history and our progressive vision.

In line with commitment to our heritage, our new brand colours are inspired by the original palette from 1922 of Midnight Blue and Sunshine Gold and are harmoniously blended with a selection of tones that echo the natural hues of the stunning Lake Macquarie environment.

Another significant aspect of the Club’s rebranding is the introduction of new uniforms for our staff of over 180. These uniforms have been meticulously designed to reflect a contemporary nautical feel, resonating with our core identity as a sailing club. The new attire not only revitalises our team’s appearance but also reinforces our commitment to professionalism and excellence in service while being setting appropriate.

A closer look...

WHAT’S IN A NAME? While we revert back to our Clubs full name, the community have referred to our Club under various names ; Skiff Club, the Footers, the 16s, The 16 Footers, Belmont 16s, Belmont Sailing Club and Belmont Skiff Club.

PURPOSEFUL PATTERNS You may see a geometrical style line pattern accompany our new branding; this actually means something! These lines are a collation of our sailing flags that we use on the water to provide warning, guidance and direction.

NOT JUST A LINE Our brand pillars were created to redefine our ethos and came from a moving engagement session with 45 life members where stories, memories and yarns were shared one afternoon. From this we have created authentic bylines as part of our branding that you will see throughout our Club that reflect our Clubs essence “ Together on the water” “ Here you are always in good company” “ Our Club was built where the winds blow well” “ A place for generations”.

CLUB UPGRADES

The Coastal Makeover of the Century Over the past 20 months, Belmont 16s Sailing Club has buzzed with activity, much of it behind the scenes, hidden by construction partitions as we pivoted and shifted offerings and moved access points and facilities. The redevelopment time frame has been a solid one and we’re grateful for your patience and understanding during this period of transformation.

Our Centenary Project’s design brief was finalised in 2019 and construction commenced in May 2022, progressing in stages to ensure minimal disruption to our members. While our original goal was to complete the project 10 | Belmont 16s Sailing Club Magazine

in time for our 100th anniversary in October 2022, the unforeseen challenges posed by Covid-19 caused some delays.

The journey at Belmont 16s Sailing Club over it’s 102 year history has been one of constant evolution to meet the evolving needs of our members and the local community. In recent years while our ground floor has continued to offer beloved traditional dishes like roast dinners and schnitzels, we’ve also expanded our menu selections to cater to a growing demand for fresh and healthy food choices, craft beers, cocktails, and non-alcoholic options.

The first floor, once underutilised, has been refreshed through the introduction of Martha and new event spaces with large protected private decks overlooking Lake Macquarie.

And while noticeably our décor, furnishings and fit outs have become more contemporary and reflective of our coastal location and our product range has expanded, our unwavering commitment to delivering top-notch hospitality remains one of our significantly unchanged offerings.

Whilst through the initial conceptual stages there was a major desire to optimise our unique location on the shores of Belmont Bay, as the pre planning progressed, the broader intent of the Centenary Project was to deliver generational change to our facilities that will enable us to serve our local community in a relevant and dynamic way for at least another 100 years.

Now, as we unveil the new look, we can confidently say it’s been well worth the wait!

CLUB UPGRADES

The Externals & Entry set the tone The car park was painstakingly resurfaced and re-lined to allow for better parking options, the Club’s exterior was painted in stages a breezy shade called “Sea Spray” and our front entrance was given a glow up, with lush new landscaping and an airy porte-cochère for drop offs and pick ups. Beyond the double story glass entrance is an island style customer service desk and a show stopping atrium ceiling. Leaving this area now to resemble a deluxe welcome that our members and visitors deserve.

Ground Floor Refresh Further along on the ground floor SALT Kitchen and Sails Eatery have received a comprehensive upgrade in configuration, allowing for sweeping lake views, airy and sheltered open air Terrace options and a larger footprint for the much missed children’s play area complete with large built in cubby house and colourful oversized climbing caterpillar.

The main bar aka “The Bay Bar” has been given a nautical facelift and a realigned set up for a more streamlined service flow. The Star Lounge was redesigned with more modern 12 | Belmont 16s Sailing Club Magazine

touches to ensure comfort as it plays host to our weekly and speciality raffles, members promotions, “Bingo with a View” , Westpac helicopter housie and free live entertainment.

Our Gaming Lounge was also updated and now exclusively features a late night snack menu from 9pm – 2:30am. Ensuring a fluid passage between the levels resulted in the addition to now three internal staircases connecting level one and the ground floor through various locations within the Club.

Level One Elevates Upstairs, you’ll now discover our new dining experience “Martha, Drink & Dine”, which has quickly become a favourite amongst our members. Notably, we’ve also re- introduced a dedicated wedding and event space, “ The South East View” that boasts panoramic 240-degree views of the lake south down the bay and east along the shoreline, expansive terraces and a beautiful sophisticated interior colour palate completes this space.

State of the art Sailing facilities Our Brian Ellis Boat Shed (located on the eastern boundary) also received an upgrade of sailing amenities including a new mezzanine level that provides our sailing officials and volunteers with improved race control facilities including optimum graded UV protection viewing deck, new state of the art technology and reconfigured racks that were custom made for our boats and new space specifications.

The shell for a secondary dining possibility on the first floor was also built, it is currently planned to open in the second half of 2025.

Martha’s floor plan includes 5 different coverings (timber floors, Spanish tile, crazy paver, linear stone tile and carpet)

The lower parts of the waterfront side of the Club were painted with painters wading in thigh deep water with tools floating in a dinghy attached by rope.

Expanding our Reach Supporting Top Blokes Foundation in improving the mental health of young men In our continued commitment to innovative and impactful community support, Belmont 16s Sailing Club are proud to introduce you to the Top Blokes Foundation, an organisation on a mission to enhance the mental health and well-being of boys and young men.

Top Blokes Foundation's High School program is a transformative 16-week mentoring initiative designed for male students aged 14-17 years that operates within a prevention and early intervention framework, creating an environment that encourages critical thinking, self-efficacy, and the development of essential life skills.

Over the course of the program, qualified youth workers from Top Blokes Foundation provide education on a wide range of crucial topics, including mental health, anger management, the impact of drugs, peer pressure, online behaviours, masculinities, the realities of explicit sexualisation and racism along with tactics to equip the next generation of young men with the tools and knowledge they need to lead happy, mentally healthy, and safe lives.

The impact this program made in the lives of these young individuals was evident when speaking to the young men with one of the participants sharing their experience, "Top Blokes helped me use different strategies to control my emotions and create healthy relationships."

“Top Blokes Foundation has experienced a significant increase in demand for its services, with a substantial waiting list of schools in Lake Macquarie seeking our support. We are committed to ensuring that every young man in need can benefit from our program” says Daniel Allars, NSW State Manager Top Blokes Foundation.

Belmont 16s Sailing Club donated to Top Blokes as part of the ClubGrants initiative in 2023, contributing to direct facilitation costs of their 16-week workshop classes. We are thrilled to announce a special musical event series that promises to be unforgettable!

Join us for intimate events throughout 2024 of music as iconic Australian musicians like Kate Ceberano on 9 March and Mr Eagle Rock himself, coveted singer and song writer, Ross Wilson on 5 April followed by Aussie rock icon Richard Clapton on April 20. Artists take the stage in a cosy setting with a crowd of less than 600 people. This unique experience allows you to get up close and personal with these legendary artists as they share their incredible music with you. CHEF’S RECIPE

Roast Chicken Panzanella Salad INGREDIENTS

METHOD

4 chicken breasts

1. Preheat oven to 200°C.

1/3 cup Kalamatta olives, pitted 1 red onion, thickly sliced 2 red capsicums, sliced thickly 2 tsp dried oregano

2. Place chicken, olives, onion, capsicum and zucchini in a large roasting dish. Combine oregano, garlic, lemon juice, vinegar and olive oil. Drizzle over dish and season.

2 punnets mixed cherry tomatoes ½ bunch basil (leaves picked) 2 zucchinis, sliced 1 cos lettuce torn 4 slices of ciabatta bread 3 garlic cloves, finely grated 1 lemon, juiced 100ml Extra Virgin Olive Oil 25ml red wine vinegar

3. Roast for 25 minutes or until chicken is slightly golden.

4. Add ciabatta to the roasting dish and ensure you give it a good coating of roasting juices. Add the tomato and roast for a further 10-15 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through.

5. Serve topped with basil.

WEDDINGS & EVENTS

Tying the Knot Paige & Luke’s Wedding 1 December 2023 During an “impromptu” sunrise walk with their Border Collie, Cash at Newcastle Beach and after snapping a photo of the sunrise, Paige turned around to a perfectly unexpected sight of Luke on one knee asking her to marry him.

Having grown up in the Belmont area, Paige and her family consider Belmont 16s Sailing Club as the families local, and previously attending her cousins wedding here felt that it was a “must do” on her venue options list.

After the initial site inspection of the space while still under construction with her Mother and future Mother in Law, Paige felt that the view was unbeatable and that she had a wonderful rapport with the Wedding Coordinaton Team.

Can you tell us about your wedding party apparel?

My wedding dress was a very fitted, lace dress with a low back which I bought from Made With Love in Sydney at their St Ives boutique.

My three bridesmaids wore emerald green flowy dresses. My husband Luke and his three groomsmen wore beige suit jackets, grey chino pants and emerald green ties (Luke wore a bow tie).

How did you decide on your wedding style?

I just looked at lots of different wedding styles on Instagram to find inspiration. I also asked friends and family for recommendations and if they knew any small businesses in the Newcastle area.

Did you stay strict on vision or did you flex?

Definitely was flexible, I feel you have to be.

Some things don’t work out the way you initially thought but that’s okay.

Who was an unexpected help in the lead up?

The night before our wedding and on our wedding day, Claire who was our onsite Venue Coordinator at Belmont 16s Sailing Club was absolutely fantastic! I met with her the night before the wedding when we were setting a

few things up and I asked her if we could change the layout and she was just so calm and relaxed, nothing was too much of an ask. Even on the wedding day, she made me feel very relaxed and that everything was completely under control.

What would you tell other brides not to compromise on?

Don’t compromise on your wedding dress! I had a lot of people say to me “but it’s just one day” but you will have these photos for the rest of your lives. When I first got engaged I was looking at cheaper dresses but my best friend and Mum encouraged me to try on ‘more expensive’ dresses and I’m so glad they did. You really do get what you pay for and I have never felt more beautiful. I would also tell other brides to not compromise on your entertainment. This brings your whole wedding together and sets the vibe for the night. We decided to go with a band, rather than a DJ and I’m so glad we did. Everyone had so much fun!

Is there a favourite image captured?

My favourite photo of Luke and I, is the one where we’re holding hands, walking on the jetty at Belmont 16’s Sailing Club. We both look so happy and we had all of our friends and family watching us from the balcony whilst we had our photos taken.

Can you tell us about the role of music at your wedding?

We had a live band as opposed to a DJ at our wedding (Tre Soul) and they were absolutely fantastic! All of our guests were dancing from the moment they started, to the moment they finished.

Do you have a planning hack?

I like to have everything written down, I find it therapeutic to write so my best friend gifted me a wedding planning diary and it was so helpful! I wrote all of my vendors down, how much of a deposit we paid, how much the final invoice was and the date it needed to be paid by. I then ticked off when things had been paid.

What was the key factor that you chose Belmont 16s Sailing Club as your venue for your ceremony and reception?

A major selling point for us was that we could have both our ceremony and reception at the one venue. I loved that we could still have our ceremony outside on the balcony, even if the weather wasn’t great because it’s covered and protected. Also, while we went off to get our bridal photos, our guests either bought a drink in Martha or went downstairs to The Boat Shed Bar whilst they waited for us to return.

A Sustainable Approach Blankets of Warmth from upcycling Faced with hundreds of soon-to-beredundant uniforms sporting an old logo, our administration team embarked on an innovative journey towards sustainability. We thought beyond convention, reaching out to a familiar organisation we had supported before and fostering a sustainable mindset to repurpose these uniforms.

Rather than discarding or donating them with uncertainty of how they would be distributed, we partnered with the local charity, Warm Blankets For Everyone (WBFE), to breathe new life into them. The result? "blanket toppers" ingeniously crafted from these uniforms, paired with polar fleece, now providing comfort to those in need within our community.

Our Club orchestrated the effort by donating hundreds of uniform items from our current inventory stock. Additionally, we rallied our 180+ team members to bring back any uniforms they had at home, ensuring no piece went to waste.

Sue Bardsley, the Chairperson/Workshop Manager of WBFE, expressed her heartfelt gratitude for our support. She emphasised

the invaluable role the superseded uniforms from Belmont 16s Sailing Club played in creating "male blankets," addressing a specific need within their organisation.

WBFE, a not-for-profit charity that emerged during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, has since become a symbol of hope and comfort. With a dedicated team of 110 volunteers, WBFE gathers excess blankets, crocheted and knitted blankets, and even manufactures its own blankets using fabric backed with polar fleece. However, the cost of polar fleece is approximately $18 per blanket.

In our quest for sustainability, we've encountered a pressing need. Warm Blankets For Everyone urgently seeks high-quality blankets, preferably wool or knitted blankets reminiscent of the ones used before doonas became popular. We invite you to check your linen cupboards and consider donating.

Every blanket counts in providing warmth and comfort to those who need it most.

The story behind Martha is an intriguing one as it is relevant to our location...

In 1800, Captain William Reid sailed the 30-tonne schooner, ‘Martha’ from Sydney to the Hunter River on a mission to collect coal.

Not going far enough north, he sailed into Lake Macquarie and accidentally became the first European person to visit the area.

For many years the lake was known as Reid’s Mistake after his fortuitous error.

Around 1826 it was renamed after Governor Lachlan Macquarie.

Behind the Scenes: Secrets of Martha HISTORICAL IMAGES The pictures adorning Martha’s walls are not mere decorations; they are snapshots from our own archives, featuring historical images of women and skiffs that chronicle our remarkable 102-year journey. These images pay homage to the resilient spirit of women and the elegant skiffs that grace our waters.

AUSTRALIAN CRAFTSMANSHIP Our commitment to local craftsmanship shines through in every aspect. All the furniture within Martha was handcrafted right here in Australia, including the creative repurposing of decommissioned telegraph poles, giving pieces a unique or sustainable touch.

MARTHA’S REMARKABLE VOYAGE Martha’s journey is an interesting yet short-lived one. Her voyage to Ried’s Mistake remains a legendary tale, but not many know it was her first and one of only two known major expeditions.

PRESERVING OUR LEGACY What is old is new again at Martha Drink and Dine. Our branding was meticulously crafted over a year before her doors opened. It emerged from profound discussions, emphasising the importance of our history as a testament to our commitment to preserving and celebrating our century-long legacy.

Keeping her name a secret was an extremely hard task!

Martha is open Thursday to Sunday, 12 pm - 3 pm | 5 pm - 10 pm.

Kids Learn To Sail Holiday Program TACKERS 1 - HAVING FUN

This course aims to provide children aged 7-12 with a fun, safe and affordable way to get into sailing. All boats, life-jackets and equipment are supplied. Catering for absolute beginners in a fun environment!

TACKERS 2 TRICKS & TECHNIQUES

This course aims to build on the fun participants had in Tackers 1, to progress their sailing skills. All boats, life-jackets and equipment are supplied.

TACKERS 3 - SAILING FAST

This course aims to build on skills learned in Tackers 2 and focuses on advanced sailing skills through games and adventures on the water. All boats, life-jackets and equipment are supplied.

TACKERS 4 - GREEN FLEET

Our Green Fleet is open to young sailors who have completed Tackers 3 and are keen to try their hand at sailing around a course and learn more about racing.
