PRESIDENT’S REPORT In preparing my report to the members for this year, I took the opportunity to review the reports I have made over the last few years. There is a clear and common theme that despite the numerous challenges the club has faced, its resilience and that of our management, staff, members and board, have resulted in the club not only surviving those challenges but growing stronger despite them. On 7 October 1922 a fleet of seven, which included six 16ft skiffs and one small yacht, took to Belmont Bay to sail what was to become the first race for the Belmont 16 Foot Sailing Club. On the 100th anniversary of this race we will be celebrating the many milestones that have taken place since that time, both on and off the water. The Centenary weekend will commence with a gala event incorporating quality entertainment, together with first rate food and beverage in the Spinnaker Room on Friday 7 October 2022, followed by a regatta in the days following which includes the participation of some historic skiffs. We expect that demand will be strong for tickets to the celebration event, so I encourage you get in early when they go on sale. After years of planning and despite the uncertainty that Covid creates, the Board have committed to the eagerly anticipated Centenary Project, which is now underway. We are proud to have ensured that many local contractors have been engaged to complete this project under the direction of Newcastle based head contractor Graph Builders to sustain employment and help drive the local economy. Apart from the enhanced indoor/outdoor dining areas and reconfigured function facilities I anticipate that the roof top bar and restaurant on the first floor will be the most popular. My expectation is that the Centenary Project will reinforce our position as a market leader, set up our Club for the next one hundred years and make all of you proud to be a Member of Belmont 16s.

adopt best practice governance processes, we are also proposing to introduce the Sailing Associate Director role which will expand the eligibility for close relatives of our sailors (including our juniors) to join the Board. Apart from our ongoing support for the sport of sailing, we have continued to support our local community across a broad range of initiatives. Some of the funding we have provided during the last year included our Helping Hands program to assist grass roots local organisations, supporting a broad range of charities, community groups and sporting teams together with some recently announced funding for the Pink Ladies at Belmont Hospital (which is featured in the following pages). We are committed to continuing to provide social dividends to our broader community. While I will leave it to the Commodore to reflect on the success of the 2021/2022 Australian 16ft Skiff Nationals hosted by our club in January as an event, I want to recognise the efforts of our management and staff (in particular our catering staff) in making the event a huge success. Faced with severe restrictions due to Covid and a constantly changing program both on and off the water, they dealt with it professionally and enthusiastically and as a result played no small part in the success of the event. As always, I thank our fantastic team at Belmont 16’s, our staff and our management team under the guidance of CEO Scott Williams. Thanks also to my fellow board members under whose guidance the club continues to prosper. All of these efforts would be fruitless were it not for the loyalty and continued support the Club receives from you, the members. There will undoubtedly be some disruption and inconvenience during the building process however, I am confident it will be worth it and that the end result will be one of which we can all be proud.

You will notice that the Board are supporting a series of special resolutions to amend the Clubs Constitution at the 2022 Annual General Meeting. Whilst the bulk of the amendments are to reflect changes in legislation or to

David Berryman President

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT It is with great satisfaction that I present my 18th annual CEO’s report to Members and advise that your Club has performed well despite the ongoing impact of the pandemic. As I reflect on the 2021/22 trading year, it is the resilience of all our stakeholders that stands out in my mind. Whether that was represented by a compulsory nine-week shutdown, the Omicron wave, isolation periods, LGA based travel restrictions, mandatory face masks, vaccinations or QR codes, we all showed that we are resilient by nature as we attempt to get on with life and put Covid in our rear-view mirror. Although we were forced to close our doors for nine weeks and the summer tourist trade was well below traditional expectations, your Club has still achieved an after-tax surplus of $3.122M for the year ended 31 March 2022. Our past strategies of building our cash reserves as well as targeting non-core properties adjacent to the Club for acquisition have been validated, which is evident in the current strength of our balance sheet. This will allow us to minimise the level of debt required to undertake the Centenary Project and places us in an enviable position as we explore development opportunities for our non-core properties in the years to come. After the completion of the sailing safety upgrades, including the installation of a new concrete apron on our eastern perimeter during the year in review, we are now in the planning phase for enhancements to our sailing infrastructure. This includes an internal reconfiguration of the Brian Ellis Boat Shed that will allow us to consolidate our sailing operations and race management facilities, including the introduction of training rooms to enhance the skills of the next generation of sailors coming through our Tackers ‘learn to sail’ programs.

As construction continues, I take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience that you may experience as the contractors transform your Club. We will continue to offer the quality of food, beverage, and other activities that you expect, although at times it will be available from locations that are different from normal. Apart from the overview that is detailed within this document, please keep your eyes peeled for regular updates through social media, our website and signage in the Club. Undertaking such a large project safely whilst continuing to provide the facilities and products that you deserve, is a juggling act and I thank you for your understanding. I wish to pay homage to our wonderful team and acknowledge how exceptionally proud I am of how they performed in a constantly evolving environment with their positivity, agility and being prepared to adopt a next person up attitude. On top of this the leadership, guidance and faith shown by President David Berryman and the Board over the last year was stellar which has been instrumental in the ongoing success of your Club. Finally, I extend my gratitude to all our loyal Members who truly are the fabric which binds Belmont 16s together. Thank you All! I believe that the Centenary Project will be transformational for both our Club and Lake Macquarie as a whole. Through the creation of new facilities and by leveraging our location over the water through creative design including bespoke interiors, we expect to be the benchmark that others will be judged by. Belmont 16s is currently in its next phase of evolution, and we are all looking forward to exceeding your expectations for many years to come.

Scott Williams Chief Executive Officer

COMMODORE’S REPORT This year Club racing after a delayed start was back to normal across all classes, with the skiffs enjoying average weekly fleet sizes well into the mid 20’s. Saturday afternoon saw a growth in the Cherubs, while the Laser fleet was again very strong, all very encouraging signs. Rod Carter, Adam Gillson & Andrew Stone teamed up to claim the Lion Club Championship this year, sailing Insight Building Services. Bailey James, Robert James, and Jamie Dobinson sailed Schweppes to victory in the Aristocrat Yearly Pointscore. Wonderful recognition for what was a very consistent performance this season, congratulations! On the representative stage it was Belmont’s time to shine hosting the Australian 16ft Skiff Titles. Rod Carter’s crew sailing Insight Building Services were our highest ranked entrant finishing 6th. The State Titles were hosted by both Belmont and Middle Harbour Skiff Club this season Will Howard’s crew sailing Contender Sailcloth were our highest ranked entrant finishing 3rd. The Cherubs saw their National Championships abandoned due to COVID-19; however, they did compete on a State level. Huey and Dewey sailed by Henry Makin and Jordan Makin were 1st Overall NSW State Championships. At the club level, Cherub Club Champion this year was Huey and Dewey – Henry Makin and Jordan Makin, while the Cherub Pointscore Winner was Harden Up – Georgia Steenson and Thomas Steenson. In the Lasers our Club Champion this year was Phantom 2– Colin Blanch and the Yearly Pointscore Champion was Krusty Krab – Darren Andrews.

Our junior fleets continued to show strong participation on a club level, the Pelican Club Champion this year was Y Knot – Banjo Nicholson and Noah Morris, while the Pelican Pointscore winner was Donut King – Taj Waters and Spencer Beeby. In the O’pen Skiffs the Club Champion was Dunnaruna – Bella Jones, while the Pointscore winner was Thunder Cat – Connor Radford. The Flying 11 Club Champion this year was Cheeky – Marshall Day and Leo Pirret, while Taj Waters and Mackenzie Paterson sailed Nomad to claim victory in the Flying 11 Pointscore. It was fantastic to see so many juniors out each week enjoying their sailing and showing fantastic team spirit and sportsmanship. Congratulations and well done! As always, I congratulate our various Start Crews, Rescue Boat Crews, Radio Officers, and numerous Volunteers. Without these individuals giving so freely of their time, week in and week out, our racing simply would not be possible. Thanks, must also go to our generous Sponsors, the Club, its Board of Directors, Management and Staff. We are all extremely fortunate to benefit from your support and assistance. Finally, I would like to thank our Vice-Commodore Mat Waters, our Sailing Committee and Sailing Administrative staff, Nadine Steenson, and Dave Sullivan. Their advice and support throughout the year has been greatly appreciated, contributing strongly to another successful and enjoyable season.

On the Junior representative stage, Flying 11 Cheeky sailed by Marshall Day and Leo Pirret claimed victory in the 2021/22 Flying 11 Australian Championships hosted by Gosford Sailing Club. What an amazing effort and fantastic achievement. Wonderful recognition for what was a very consistent performance throughout the season, well done and congratulations.

BRINGING THE FUN

WITH OUR NEW CONSTRUCTION DISTRACTION

We understand the value of having occupied children when dining out and while our upgrades are exciting, they will see our children’s playground out of action while it and the surrounding areas are being deconstructed and then upgraded. As a solution we have teamed up with a locally developed company called Grub Lab, whose product was created by a team of 20 locals based out of Kurri Kurri. Grub Lab’s sole focus is to deliver fun and engaging experiences for kids in dining venues, while keeping them seated! Our Grub Lab activity packs, put simply are amazing 3D games, play and experiences. Each kids activity pack is individually wrapped and includes a 13-page Scan & Play booklet, a pack of 6 colouring pencils, collectible AR Heroes cards and FREE access to the Grub Lab app which brings the activity books to life! We will be offering these packs FREE when purchasing a Children’s meal in either of our SALT or Sails outlets during our construction time frame.

“We offer the packs at the time of ordering so the wait time for the children’s meals to be delivered flies by, because everyone is busy learning how to control their own 3D player” Food and Beverage Manager - Joel Simmons

BELMONT'S PINK LADIES

RECEIVE $20,000 UPGRADE Shortly after the Belmont District Hospital opened in 1968 a small group of dedicated women established the Belmont Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, fondly known as the Pink Ladies. In those early years, the Pink Ladies created a basic set-up in the hospital’s car park where cold cups of cordial and biscuits were for purchase to visitors and patients of the Hospital, with the proceeds being gifted to Belmont Hospital improvements. Fast-forward almost 55 years and while the location of the Pink Ladies kiosk has moved to a purpose-built space within the hospital itself and the organisation’s legacy is as committed as ever to those original goals of providing support to the Belmont Hospital. COVID-19 took its toll with the pandemic forcing the Pink Ladies Kiosk to close. Volunteer’s involvement became restricted and the kiosk’s kitchen equipment sat unused for nearly two years, quickly deteriorating and in desperate need of updating. Armed with an issue, Secretary for the group Fay Smith approached Belmont 16s with a detailed funding application requesting for a donation towards the purchase of two new kitchen items that would provide improved safety conditions for the volunteers as well as efficiency in their food service. The board approved the donation of $20,726.60

37

which covered the purchase of an automated commercial grade coffee machine as well as a 'Merrychef' a high speed oven designed to reduce meal preparation times, its multifunction also means it could replace a plethora of old out dated kitchen appliances. The Pink Ladies were humbled by our donation and operations of the kiosk will re-commence shortly after these new appliances arrive. The kiosk is usually open daily from 9am to 2pm. All proceeds made from coffees / hot meals at the Pink Ladies Kiosk head straight back into the Belmont District Hospital and are used towards the purchase of medical equipment and upgrades.

of these volunteers " Some have been here for many

years, doing what they think is best with their time and giving back. This donation just makes it easier for them to do so.

"

Fay Smith - Pink Ladies Belmont Branch Secretary

Community support is at " the centre of who we are

as a Club, we hope that the equipment our donation has purchased provides additional ease and safety for all the hard working Volunteers involved in the Pink Ladies.

MALT SHOVEL

BEER SCHOOL

With great beer comes great responsibility! In it’s seventh year of operation our Boat Shed Bar has become a beacon for craft beer lovers, with a dedicated selection of our taps allocated to a highly curated list of the hard to get, limited releases and small batch domestically brewed beers. So how does our team keep up to date on the latest “beerformation” you wonder? Answer: We taste, we talk and we train! Earlier this year, the bar team sat down with the Malt Shovel Beer School to build upon their craft beer knowledge. The three week program took our team on a deep dive into the core ingredients in our beers of malt, water, hops, and yeast while looking at what else is added to the beers we serve, and why. They compared three distinctly different styles of beer and debated what makes them fall into each category. The final week of training involved discussing in detail various styles of beer we see tapped in the Boat Shed Bar with a focus on the current Australian craft beer trend in pale ales.

"It’s harder than you think to recommend a beer” says Boat Shed Bar Team Leader Rowan.

“We want to make sure that each beer we serve is enjoyed. In depth training sessions help our team to confidently identify a good match between what’s on our taps and various tastes of our customers." What’s Row’s beer recommendation? “You cannot go past our craft beer paddle, its only $18 and you get a good selection of four different beers that we can help you select.” The Boat Shed Bar located inside the Club, is the home of independent craft beer and fine wine enthusiasts. If you are visiting us, simply take a left turn after reception down the hallway to explore everything The Boat Shed Bar has to offer. The Boat Shed Bar is open from 5pm to late on Wednesday to Saturday. On Sundays the bar is open from 12pm to 7pm.
