In this edition of the Bellarmine magazine, among updates on the amazing things happening on campus, you’ll see the names of so many people who have helped to make the work that we do possible. I’m enormously grateful to everyone who has given their support to Bellarmine this past year, in any fashion – whether that is through teaching or coaching, sharing with friends about the value of Jesuit education, or making a financial contribution to the school. We are thankful for support in whatever form it takes.
Throughout the Fall here on campus, there has been so much to be grateful for: the new Wade Academic Center, the enthusiasm of the freshman class, the spirit on display at rallies and games, and the good learning happening in the classroom, just to name a few.
On August 29th, thanks to the vision of Principal Rod Jemison, the hard work of our Athletic Director Kevin Saldivar ’04 and so many other others on staff, we hosted our first-ever night football game and Fan Fest on campus. For those who were there (and for a minute it felt like all of the South Bay!) it was truly a night to remember. Yes, the football team posted a season-opening win against Sobrato High School, but perhaps even more importantly, the whole community came together in a true celebration of Bellarmine. It was a great way to kick off the start of our celebration of 175 years of Jesuit education, with 100 here on the College Park campus.
In 2026, we’ll be hosting a community-wide celebration on Saturday, May 9th, the day after our official 175th birthday. I hope that many of you will come out to enjoy the day, to celebrate all that the school and our students, alumni, parents and friends have accomplished, and to look forward to how this special place will continue to shape Silicon Valley for the next 175 years and beyond.
While none of us know what Bellarmine will look like at our 350th anniversary, I do know that we won’t be able to get there without your support. Thank you for all the ways in which you have supported this community in the past, and for all that you will do to show your Bell pride in the future.
Know that whether your last visit to campus was a week ago or several decades ago, there is always a place for you here at Bellarmine. I hope to see you on campus again soon.
Gratefully,
Chris Meyercord ’88 President

2025
Editor’s Note
Having joined the team at Bellarmine in January 2025, I’m coming up on one year in this role and experiencing my first holiday season on campus.
In keeping with the cyclical nature of the school calendar, I’m adding to a list of firsts. In the spring, I attended my first Golden Bell Auction, Founders’ Day Celebration, and Graduation weekend. In the summer, I watched campus launch into Summer Days, teeming with kids of all ages exploring all manner of sports, hobbies, and subjects. In the fall, I saw students come back to campus with renewed energy that was palpable at our Back-to-School Rally and the Freshmen Gauntlet – and of course, Bellarmine Fan Fest was a night I won’t soon forget.
This winter, perhaps more than any other season in my first year here, I’ve witnessed the spirit of service that animates life at Bellarmine.
In this issue of BCP Magazine, you’ll read about VolunteerConnect and Fruitsharing, two impressive initiatives launched by current students. You’ll learn about the amazing suicide prevention advocacy Paul Muller ’67 has dedicated decades of work to. And you’ll see how alumni, family, and friends of the school continue to support excellence and accessibility of Jesuit education through annual fundraisers that enliven our community.
If we covered every act of service our students have executed so far this year, the magazine would be as thick as a phone book. Whether they provided meals and supplies for our unhoused neighbors in partnership with Silicon Valley Safe Park, organized a 5K race benefiting Second Harvest of Silicon Valley, or filled bins with blankets, sheets, warm clothing, and nonperishables for our Winter Warmth Drive… our students have demonstrated care and kindness in every corner of campus.
After almost a year at Bellarmine, I can say with confidence that meaningful work is being done here. Our faculty and staff are doing the work to form men for and with others; and our students are embracing that mission with sincerity and heart.
In this season of gratitude and reflection, I’m grateful that I get to witness it – and I’m grateful to share a sliver of it with you by way of this magazine.
Warmest wishes for the season, and with pride and excitement as we enter Bellarmine’s 175th year: Go Bells!
Warm regards,
Alysen Smith Director, Marketing and Communications

From the Principal’s Office
At Bellarmine, we are constantly reminded that being “men and women for and with others” is more than a vision; it is a lifelong call. It asks us to give of ourselves without the expectation of reward – in other words, service is not an act we complete to feel good about ourselves. Rather, the purpose is to see the face of God in those we serve, and to recognize that true fulfillment lies not in what we gain, but in what we give.
Already this school year, three experiences that have deepened my understanding of this calling are Kairos, the Salinas Plunge, and my classroom visits. Though each setting is different, they all return to the same truth: God calls us to be the best version of ourselves by walking alongside others in compassion, humility, and love.
Kairos is more than a retreat: it is a spiritual journey inward and outward. It challenges us to look honestly at who we are, who we are becoming, and how we can serve others more intentionally. Through prayer, reflection, and community, we encounter God’s unconditional love and the realization that our best selves emerge when we support others. On Kairos, we learn that serving others is not a duty but a joyful response to God’s grace.
The Salinas Plunge – an annual service pilgrimage during October break – brings that same grace into action. Immersing ourselves in the Salinas community allows us to walk with those who are often unseen or excluded. We listen to stories, share meals, and participate in daily life, not as outsiders offering charity, but as companions seeking understanding. These encounters remind us that service is not a one-time act; it is a way of living that recognizes the dignity and humanity of every person we meet. Helping others is not exceptional; it is deeply human, and profoundly Ignatian.
Within the classroom, the call to service takes a quieter, but equally powerful form. In a world that glorifies instant gratification, our work as educators and students asks for patience, perseverance, and faith in the process. Learning, like spiritual growth, requires us to trust that the struggle of today shapes the wisdom of tomorrow, instilling values of empathy, resilience, and gratitude. In more than 100 classroom visits this year, I have seen these values reflected in our educators, who may never know the extent to which their efforts to shape our boys materialize.
God calls each of us, every day, to think less about ourselves and more about others and to move beyond comfort and convenience. Yet, as we see through experiences like Kairos and the Salinas Plunge, and in the classroom, God never calls us to do what we are not capable of. He equips us with courage, compassion, and community: the very tools that make love in action possible.
At Bellarmine, we answer this call together. In doing so, we discover that service is not something we do, it is who we are. In this edition of BCP Magazine, you’ll find many examples of our students and alumni answering that call.
Wishing all of you a wonderful holiday season with family and friends. Go Bells!

Jacob Su ’26: Sunnyvale High School Student of the Year
Bellarmine senior Jacob Su ’26 was named Sunnyvale’s High School Student of the Year this summer – an honor he describes not as a personal achievement, but as “validation of our community’s collective effort to address food insecurity together.”
The award places Jacob among an impressive group of community changemakers celebrated through Sunnyvale’s Community Awards Program, which has honored local leaders for almost 50 years. The High School Student of the Year category recognizes Sunnyvale teenagers who demonstrate exceptional initiative, compassion, and leadership.
Each year, nominations are submitted by community members and evaluated by a committee of previous award winners who review candidates based on their contributions, community impact, and perseverance in overcoming challenges.
HARVESTING CHANGE
The spirit of collaboration is at the heart of Fruitsharing.com, the student-run initiative Jacob co-founded with a childhood friend after noticing fruit from neighborhood trees rotting on the ground in abundance during certain seasons. “It seemed like such a missed opportunity,” he recalls.
“We saw a simple way to connect that untapped resource with local organizations that serve families in need.”
Since launching the project, Fruit Sharing has collected and distributed more than 20,000 pounds of fresh produce that would have otherwise gone to waste. By partnering directly with farmers’ markets and local food banks, it has helped ensure that surplus fruit from backyard harvests finds its way to families across the Bay Area.
LESSONS IN LEADERSHIP
Getting there wasn’t easy. Early efforts to spread the word through flyers and neighborhood responses drew little response: “We learned quickly that the best way to grow the initiative was to meet people where they already were,” Jacob explains. Partnering with farmers’ markets proved to be the breakthrough they needed, turning limited neighborhood donations into an ongoing network of community partnerships!
While Fruitsharing.com operates independently of Bellarmine, Jacob credits the Jesuit values of service and reflection instilled on campus for shaping his motivation and approach. “Classes like Changemakers in a Changing World and Christian Ethics, and teachers like Mrs. Franey, have consistently inspired me to turn principles into action,” he says.
Looking ahead, and with college on the horizon, Jacob hopes to establish a new Fruit Sharing chapter wherever he lands next. “I think it would be a fantastic way to move beyond the campus bubble and apply the skills I’ve developed to serve a new community.”
Through creativity, perseverance, and compassion, Jacob Su ’26 reminds us that small ideas – like harvesting fruit that might otherwise go to waste – can blossom into meaningful change that nourishes entire communities.
In September, 26 seniors found out they qualified as 2026 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists! That means they scored in the top 1% of 1.3 million juniors to take the PSAT nationwide earlier this year – an extraordinary honor requiring near-perfect test scores. California had the fifth-highest cutoff in the country (requiring Semifinalists to score at least 224 points out of a possible 228), making this achievement even more impressive. Congratulations and good luck to our Semifinalists on their path to becoming Finalists in the spring!

In May, a team of six Bellarmine freshmen – Arth Murarka, Umar Khan, Ishaan Joshi, Alden Al-Mehdi, Rohnin Qureshi, and Om Gokul – achieved something remarkable by winning first place in NASA’s 2025 Drop Tower National Challenge: Paddle Wheel.
Bellarmine Freshmen Win First Place in NASA’s 2025 Drop Tower Challenge
A highly competitive engineering contest that draws submissions from all over the country, this year’s challenge invited teams of high schoolers to design paddle wheels that can demonstrate fluid behavior in microgravity: an engineering problem tied to realworld needs in spacecraft cooling, life-support systems, and fuel management. Out of 19 teams whose designs were tested in NASA’s 2.2-Second Drop Tower, Bellarmine’s all-freshman team placed first, finishing ahead of several teams of only upperclassmen!
Their winning project, a 3D-printed paddle wheel capable of rotating in water under microgravity, not only impressed NASA scientists but also earned the students an invitation to present their research at the American Society for Gravitational and Space Research (ASGSR) Conference in December.
MONTHS IN THE MAKING
The students’ journey began when they came across the Drop Tower Challenge while browsing the NASA website and decided to form a team. What awaited them was a months-long process involving intense research, experimental design, material testing, and formal proposal writing.
The team met every weekend and held twice-weekly online meetings, dedicating their free time to understanding the physics of capillary action, hydrophobicity, and fluid dynamics – the forces that govern how water behaves in microgravity. NASA provided background videos, sample papers, and a guide describing the challenge, but the rest was left to the students.
“We started by dividing up the research,” says Arth. “Everyone chose an area they wanted to focus on, and we used NASA’s introductory materials as a foundation.” With this groundwork, they prepared a proposal that included two early 3D-printed designs. A few weeks later, NASA notified them that their proposal had been accepted for testing.
ENGINEERING TRIALS AND ERRORS
Once selected, the Bellarmine team moved into the most rigorous phase of the project: refining their design. Their greatest challenge
was identifying the right hydrophilic and hydrophobic materials to allow the paddle wheel to rotate in water without relying on gravity or mechanical force.
Because hydrophilic materials aren’t typically advertised as such, the team found themselves testing all manner of common items in developing each iteration. “I learned that something doesn’t need to be super expensive or complex to work,” Umar recalls. “We found that white board sheets or packing peanuts — just household items — can be effective [in the design].”
Hydrophobic options proved equally complicated as certain coatings weren’t durable enough for repeated water testing. After countless trials, they settled on a combination of materials, including the commercial hydrophobic spray NeverWet, which withstood repeated experimentation.
As their research deepened, the team reviewed past NASA competition papers to learn how to structure their own report, which ultimately reached an undergraduate level of technical sophistication.
MAKER LAB MENTORSHIP AND STUDENT-LED INNOVATION
A critical resource throughout the project was Bellarmine’s Maker Lab. “The sophisticated 3D printing available in the Maker Lab made a huge difference by allowing us to test ideas quickly and make changes efficiently,” says Ishaan.
Maker Lab Director David Dutton served as the faculty advisor and helped the team organize their workflow at the start, but after that, the students took full ownership of their project. “The Maker Lab really promotes student agency and exploration,” Mr. Dutton explains. “They would occasionally ask questions, but for the most part, worked pretty autonomously.”
Once the final design was complete, the team packaged their hardware and shipped it to NASA Glenn, where technicians placed it in the Drop Tower: a facility that simulates microgravity for 2.2 seconds by allowing experiments to fall freely in a controlled environment. NASA engineers then assessed each project based on design creativity, test performance, analysis, and the clarity and quality of the accompanying research report.
AN UNFORGETTABLE WIN
After more than four months of researching, testing, and developing their paddle wheel, NASA notified the team that they had won.
“We learned a lot of useful skills and had a lot of fun,” says Arth. “It was definitely worth it.”
Beyond the victory, the students gained skills in research, engineering, technical writing, and long-term collaboration that they will carry with them well beyond high school.
Their success also underscores a key truth about Bellarmine’s STEM ecosystem: when students are given the space, resources, and mentorship to explore, they rise to the challenge – and sometimes all the way to NASA!
Taiwanese Student Delegation Visits Bellarmine Robotics for International Engineering Exchange
This summer, Bellarmine’s acclaimed Robotics program welcomed a student delegation from Taiwan for a day of learning, collaboration, and cross-cultural exchange. The visit, organized by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education and Bellarmine Robotics
Coach Andrew Lawrence, brought a cohort of high-achieving students from Taipei City to Bellarmine’s Robotics Lab, where they met with members of Team 254, toured the space, and shared the innovative projects they’ve been developing in their respective engineering programs.
Showcasing Innovation at Bellarmine
When the Taiwanese delegation arrived, Bellarmine students took the lead in welcoming their guests, with a large group of Robotics team members present despite being on summer break. Bells presented an overview of the school’s Robotics program, the structure of Team 254, and the priorities that guide each year’s work.
Fan Fest
The visitors were also treated to a demonstration of Undertow, Bellarmine’s 2025 competition robot. Students highlighted the engineering choices behind the robot’s design, followed by a live demo of the machine in motion. The exchange offered a rare chance for international peers to compare robotics approaches in real time!
Learning from Taiwanese Engineering Students
Just as Team 254 showcased their work, the Taiwanese delegation arrived ready to share their own research and projects. Their designs spanned a wide spectrum, from assistive devices for the elderly to automated household tools, illustrating an impressive ability to identify needs within their communities and engineer inventive solutions.
“The most valuable thing our students learned from them was how to look at the world and identify problems to solve,” says Mr. Lawrence. He noted a key difference between the programs: Bellarmine students receive a defined challenge each year through competitive robotics, whereas the Taiwanese students often seek out problems independently. This contrast sparked rich discussions about engineering purposes and possibilities.
“At first everyone was a bit nervous and unsure of how things would go,” Mr. Lawrence recalls. “But by the end of the day, our Taiwanese visitors and Bellarmine representatives were friendly, inquisitive, and excited to have made new friends.”
Building Bridges for the Future
Beyond technical presentations, the day emphasized the value of connection. Students spent time exchanging ideas, comparing school experiences, and celebrating the creativity that drives young engineers around the world.
“The goal of the visit was to engage with an international community, and both share our knowledge and experience while also learning how engineering programs outside of our culture work,” Mr. Lawrence says. “Not only did we accomplish this, but we also gained long-distance friends in engineering along the way.”
The exchange offered a powerful reminder of what makes Bellarmine Robotics exceptional: hands-on creativity, collaborative spirit, and the belief that innovation grows stronger when shared.
We “kicked off” the 2025-26 school year with Bellarmine Fan Fest, an unforgettable community celebration that brought thousands together on campus! More than 4,500 students, alumni, families, and friends of the school joined us in the Quad for a festival complete with a bounce house, food trucks, games, and giveaways – then, over 3,000 fans packed the stands for the first-ever oncampus football game under the lights!
Campus was teeming with students and their families well into the night, the school spirit was as palpable as ever, and the Bells started their football season with a victory over the Sobrato Bulldogs. One parent told us “the energy was electric,” another parent said “it was truly a night to remember,” and a senior football player called it the best night of his life!
Connecting Passion to Purpose: How Bellarmine Students Built VolunteerConnect
When Andrew Lei ’27 came to Bellarmine as a freshman and was faced with a 15-hour service requirement, he didn’t know where to start. “My middle school didn’t offer service opportunities, and I was too intimidated to venture alone to a public school,” he recalls.
Luckily, he didn’t have to look far: a peer suggested volunteering with Friends of Children with Special Needs, and Andrew “jumped right in and fell in love.” But he didn’t forget about the initial dread of searching for service opportunities that fulfilled the school’s requirements, and felt like a meaningful way to use his time and talents.
That realization became the spark for VolunteerConnect, a studentrun platform aiming to bridge the gap between passionate teens and impactful volunteer opportunities. “Other online databases aren’t geared toward students or personalized to our local communities,” Andrew says. VolunteerConnect helps solve that problem.
The website started with a spreadsheet. Andrew Lei ’27, Aarav Iyer ’27, John Xie ’27, and Vihan Bhattacharjee ’27 combed the internet for volunteer opportunities, looking through large databases and directly on nonprofits’ websites to collate details on opportunities for high schoolers.
The first iteration of the website came together last year, and the group has since built it into a comprehensive, interactive, searchable, and account-free database with hundreds of volunteer opportunities that are filterable by skills, location, areas of interest, and more!
According to Andrew, Bellarmine faculty have been the biggest source of support for VolunteerConnect. The group has sought advice from adults in the Christian Service Program and the Office of Advancement, and VolunteerConnect became an official school club this year. “We’re endlessly grateful for the support and assistance Bellarmine has provided to our website and vision,” Andrew says.
The club has multiplied its membership since the school year began, including more than a dozen students from other schools! Here’s what a few members have to say about the initiative:
Ari Iyer ’27: “Being able to collaborate with all these other great organizations through VolunteerConnect has really helped me understand why I was so passionate about this project in the first place.”
John Xie ’27: “At its core, volunteering uplifts the community and creates positive, impactful change. VolunteerConnect has really shown me the importance of enabling access to these opportunities for teenagers and peers.”
Adyant Bhavsar ’28: “As a lifelong volunteer, joining VolunteerConnect has strengthened my teamwork and creativity skills, as I seek to lead projects while tackling obstacles along the path.”
Vihan Bhattacharjee ’27: “It’s inspiring to be part of a group that actively encourages our peers to make a difference. Watching fellow Bells come together with a shared passion for serving their communities is also really inspiring.”
Matteo Cortes ’29: “We’ve been able to include over two hundred different volunteer opportunities in one place, and it feels really good to know that we’re facilitating students being able to match their personal areas of interest with service opportunities.”
Michael Ghobrial ’28: “VolunteerConnect has taught me the importance of taking initiative as a form of leadership and developing new solutions to old problems. It’s not just about completing and delegating tasks.”
VolunteerConnect is still in its infancy, but the team has big plans for it already. They’re working to automate the addition of new opportunities, as well as incorporating one-time events alongside long-term and recurring opportunities. They’re also exploring partnerships with libraries, community centers, youth councils, and middle schools.
Even as it grows, the goal for VolunteerConnect remains simple: make it easier for every student to discover the joy, purpose, and community that come from serving others.

— Student, Class of ’28
2025 President’s Award Recipients BARBARA & BILL HEIL
Barbara and Bill Heil are huge San Francisco Giants fans, so to use a baseball analogy to describe their generosity, one might say this year’s recipients of the Bellarmine President’s Award have hit it out of the park.
The Heils have been significant supporters of Catholic education and of Bellarmine for decades, with their five children all having attended St. John Vianney School in San Jose, where Barbara was instrumental in the design of its kindergarten and extended care center. Their sons, Bill ’99 and Patrick ’03, are Bellarmine alumni; and their daughters, Katie, Madeleine, and Julia, are Presentation High School alumnae.
“We’re so grateful for the excellent education our two sons received, and we want to ensure that Bellarmine is accessible to the broadest range of students,” noted Barbara. “Even our three daughters benefited from the Bellarmine experience as, along with their older brothers, they were involved in Speech and Debate and Bellarmine’s Theater program and Sanguine Humors. So, they, too, spent a lot of time on the Bellarmine campus.”
During their years as Bellarmine parents, Barbara and Bill also spent a lot of time on campus. As Barbara has reflected, “Running the Speech and Debate parent group and participating in the Mothers’ Guild and Fashion Shows took up a significant portion of my eight years as a mom at Bellarmine, culminating with my chairing the Fashion Show in 2002. That was most definitely a family affair!”
The many ways the Heils have contributed to Bellarmine over the years have included financial support for tuition assistance, The Bellarmine Fund, the Mothers’ Guild Fashion Show and Golden Bell events, and major gifts to the current Capital Campaign, specifically designated for the James A. Harville ’63 Speech and Debate Hub in the new Wade Academic Center.
The Heils' philanthropic generosity goes well beyond supporting Bellarmine, as numerous organizations are benefiting from their kindness. Bill, a veteran tech executive and graduate of M.I.T. and of Harvard Business School, is a Board member of the Tech Interactive in San Jose, with which he has been involved for 30 years. He and Barbara, who received degrees in Architecture and Art History at Pennsylvania State University, are sponsoring an expansion of the Tech Challenge program in the Bay Area and Kenya (among the initiators of the Kenya program are two Bellarmine alumni, Shiven Patel ’23 and Ian Pearce ’23). Barbara and Bill journeyed to Kenya this summer where 18,000 teachers were expected to be trained. Bill also serves as a Board member at Project Invent, a national STEM education program that links middle-high school teams with community partners, allowing the students to ‘invent’ technology solutions for a partner’s real-world problem. Other not-for-profits supported by Barbara and Bill are the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the San Francisco Giants Junior Giants Program.
These organizations align with the Heils' personal and philanthropic philosophies. “My personal philosophy is that I should do all I can to leave this planet in a better place for our children and grandchildren,” noted Barbara. Bill’s philosophy is also forwardthinking. “Our generation has left many important problems unsolved (number one is the climate crisis),” he shared. “We want to help create a next generation of compassionate problem solvers equipped to anticipate future technology breakthroughs.”
In recognition of their care, compassion, and inherent goodness, and – using another baseball analogy – for the countless ways they have stepped up to the plate for the benefit of so many – locally, nationally, and globally – Bellarmine is honored to present the 2025 President’s Award to Barbara and Bill Heil.

Wade Academic Center Dedication
The new Wade Academic Center on Bellarmine’s campus was dedicated the afternoon of August 20.
The ceremony, which included a blessing by Fr. Sean Carroll, Provincial of Jesuits West, was attended by more than 200 guests, many of whom were benefactors who supported the new 21-classroom facility.
Wade Academic Center is named in honor of Fr. Jerry Wade, S.J. ’55, and his late, beloved parents, Clara and Walter Wade. As Fr. Wade was unable to attend the event, remarks on his behalf were conveyed by his good friend, Fr. Dick Cobb, S.J. Chris Meyercord ’88, President of Bellarmine, also delivered remarks during the ceremony.
The event included a reception in the new Moley Family Quad, and guests toured the new 43,000-square-foot building that is home to the James A. Harville ’63 Speech and Debate Hub, the Atwood Family IT Center, the Fr. Dick Cobb, S.J., Center for Adult Spirituality, the Dean’s Office, Nurse’s Office, and Modern and Classic Languages classrooms.
PARENT GIVING
The following parents of Bellarmine students during Fiscal Year 2024-2025 have supported the school in a variety of ways, including but not limited to gifts made to The Bellarmine Fund, Direct Tuition Assistance Fund, Tuition Assistance Endowment, Capital Campaign, Mothers’ Guild Fashion Show for Tuition Assistance, and the Golden Bell Auction.

GIFTS-IN-KIND
In addition to receiving financial support, Bellarmine relies on the generosity of those who contribute non-monetary items and services, which are considered Gifts-in-Kind. This type of support results in savings to the school, allowing funds to instead be applied directly to programs and services for the benefit of our students. The following individuals and companies provided Gifts-in-Kind to Bellarmine during Fiscal Year 2024-2025.

Meet Bellarmine’s Pinkston Fellows: Jasper and Jacobi Mitchell
The Pinkston Fellowship – established in honor of retired faculty member, mentor, and spiritual leader Steve Pinkston – supports recent college graduates of racially and culturally diverse backgrounds who aspire to serve through teaching, coaching, counseling, or ministry.
Inspired by Mr. Pinkston’s legacy as Bellarmine’s first African American faculty member and a champion for inclusion and belonging, the fellowship program seeks to cultivate a more diverse educator pipeline while uplifting the next generation of leaders.
Twin brothers Jasper and Jacobi Mitchell are this year’s Pinkston Fellows, joining the Bellarmine community with a shared passion for faith, creativity, and connection. They graduated from Morehouse College in 2025 and will be on campus through the end of the 2026-27 school year.
From Morehouse to Bellarmine
The Mitchells learned about the Pinkston Fellowship in what they describe as a "beautifully unexpected way.” An encounter in the Morehouse College cafeteria with Dr. Sonya Arriola, Bellarmine's Chief of Staff, led to a meeting with Mr. Steve Pinkston, where they learned more about the mission and vision of the fellowship. “We knew right away that our goals were aligned,” says Jacobi.
Through their work with the Christian Service Program, Partners in Mission and Ministry, and the Immersion program, Jasper and Jacobi are already making an impact on campus: leading with love and building belonging.
Read on to learn what drew the Mitchell twins to Bellarmine, their hopes for the fellowship, and how they plan to continue Steve Pinkston’s legacy.
Tell us about who you are and how you got here. What shaped who you are today?
Our journey to this point has been shaped by our family, faith, and the transformative power of music. We’ve been singing and playing instruments our entire lives — piano, guitar, bass, drums, and more. This shared passion led us to create our own music studio, where we learned how to produce, record, and release our own songs.
Music has been our greatest teacher in collaboration, creativity, and perseverance. It’s also shown us how art can bring people together across differences, a lesson that deeply informs how we approach education and community-building.
What inspired you to pursue a career in education? How does Jesuit education, in particular, resonate with your values?
Our decision to pursue education is rooted in a desire to lead as Jesus led — with compassion, purpose, and love. Jesuit education, with its emphasis on being “men and women for and with others,” resonates strongly with the way we’ve tried to live our own lives. We believe that true education is an act of service — one that forms the mind, the heart, and the spirit.
Who are the teachers, mentors, or role models that influenced you? How do they shape the kind of educators you hope to be?
We’ve been shaped by incredible mentors who modeled the kind of leadership we aspire to achieve. From our professors at Morehouse who challenged us to think critically and live intentionally, to our family and faith community who showed us the power of grace, each has inspired us to lead with empathy and integrity. These mentors have made us want to be educators who not only teach, but also listen, creating spaces where students feel seen, valued, and loved.
As educators of African Ancestry, how do you hope to bring your identity and experiences to Bellarmine? Why does representation in education matter to you?
As educators of African ancestry, we recognize how vital representation is. We want students, especially Black students, to see themselves reflected in their teachers and to know that their presence and perspective matter. We hope to bring our full selves to Bellarmine: our cultural background, our artistic gifts, and our lived experiences as HBCU graduates. One of
our special goals during our fellowship is to help strengthen Bellarmine’s Black Student Union and ensure that every Black student feels welcome, safe, and celebrated.
We are also passionate about founding the Bellarmine Music Studio, where students can explore their love for music both formally and informally. Our dream is to give them the tools and space to create, record, and perform their own art, and to experience what it means to transform emotion into sound and sound into connection.
What excites you most about being at Bellarmine this year, and what do you hope to learn or contribute through the Pinkston Fellowship?
What excites us most about being at Bellarmine is the spirit of love that radiates through the community. The Jesuit values, the open-hearted leadership, and the genuine care we’ve already experienced align perfectly with who we aspire to be. Through the Pinkston Fellowship, we hope to create radical, groundbreaking, and unifying spaces that nurture inclusivity, artistry, and student development.
Above all, our prayer is to reflect those who poured into and prayed over us to ensure that every student we encounter knows their voice is heard, their opinions are valued, and their presence is cherished.
Athletics Highlights
by Kevin Saldivar ’04, CAA, Director of Athletics
Bellarmine Athletics continues to build traditions of teamwork, sportsmanship, and excellence – and this year brought yet another milestone! In November, the varsity cross country team raced to a West Catholic Athletic League title at Crystle Springs, securing the 300th WCAL Championship in school history (more than twice as many as any other WCAL school in the league in boys sports).
From a record-setting Cross Country season, to a history-making home Football game, to the heart resilience on display across the pool in Water Polo, our teams continue to compete with grit and represent Bellarmine with pride. Here are some highlights from the Fall of 2025.
Water Polo The Bells battled with determination in every Water Polo match despite an up-and-down season, with a young varsity roster showing strong promise for the years ahead. Senior Night was filled with energy, gratitude, and heartfelt celebration as we honored our departing student-athletes at the pool they’ve called home for four years. The team notched a postseason victory over Soquel High School in the opening round of CCS playoffs before falling in the semifinals.
Cross-Country Following last year’s CIF State runner-up finish, the Bells continued their excellence by dominating the competition throughout the WCAL schedule. The varsity squad captured its sixth straight WCAL championship and its 32nd in school history. Throughout the season, runners shattered multiple school records, and their league championship saw a rare double 4x4 sweep: the Bells won the team title and had the individual champion at all four levels!
Football This season brought a historic game to Bellarmine’s campus: our first-ever night game here at College Park. Over 4,500 people came to Fan Fest – complete with bounce houses, food trucks, games, and giveaways – and more than 3,000 fans packed the stands to watch the Bells defeat the Sobrato Bulldogs. The opening-night victory, paired with overwhelming support from every corner of the Bellarmine community, was a truly memorable experience and a stellar way to start the season.
On August 23, the Bellarmine community gathered on campus to celebrate three remarkable alumni whose lives and careers exemplify the school’s Ignatian ideals. Paul Rose ’75, Bill Sullivan ’76, and Adnan Iqbal ’00 were inducted into the Bellarmine Alumni Hall of Fame during a ceremony honoring their accomplishments and commitment to being men for and with others, followed by dinner with family and friends of the school.
Paul Rose ’75 is the winningest high school boys’ soccer coach in California history, accumulating an extraordinary .840 winning percentage and 918 career victories. A fourtime National Coach of the Year, Paul's Jesuit values and love for the game of soccer guided him to shape thousands of student-athletes over 45 years at Jesuit High School.
Bill Sullivan ’76 is the founder of Neighborhood Hands, a nonprofit that provides dignified work opportunities, as well as hot meals, clothing, hygiene resources, bike repairs, haircuts, and access to critical services to unhoused individuals. Bill embodies what it means to be a man for and with others, and his work in San Jose has transformed lives while advancing long-term, community-based solutions to homelessness.
Adnan Iqbal ’00 is the co-founder & CEO of Luma Health, a health technology company working to solve one of the biggest challenges in healthcare – getting a patient to the right provider and to the best outcome quickly. Adnan's work has helped transform the way healthcare is delivered by addressing systemic barriers to access and helping millions of people receive the care they need.
2025 Alumni Hall of Fame Honorees
Grand Reunion
In September, alumni from eight different Bellarmine classes gathered on campus for Grand Reunion: an annual celebration combining class reunions across generations! This year’s event brought Bells together from the Classes of 1980, ’85, ’90, ’95, ’00, ’05, ’10, and ’15.
The evening began with Mass with the Jesuits in the Leontyne Chapel, followed by a campus tour, then a reception in the Quad. Reconnecting with classmates, looking through old yearbooks, and swapping stories with fellow alumni made it a resounding success. Once a Bell, always a Bell!
38th Annual Bellarmine Golf Classic
The 38th annual Bellarmine Golf Classic raised over $30,000 for the Direct Tuition Assistance Fund! Temperatures were below 60 and it rained on and off all day – but that didn’t stop 200+ participants from joining us at Cinnabar Hills Golf Club for a day of fun and friendly competition. We had Bellarmine parents, grandparents, former faculty, coaches, and seven decades of alumni participate in the tournament, generating a meaningful contribution to our students’ Tuition Assistance needs.
Congratulations to our 2025 champions, the foursome of Boots Del Biaggio ’16, Curtis Lloyd ’16, Kolbey Moreno ’17, and Austin Murphy ’17, who shot 55 (-17) to earn a spot on the Bellarmine Golf Classic perpetual trophy. They captured this year’s crown by winning a tiebreaker over the 2023 champions, the quartet of Pat Crema ’88, Dennis Namimatsu ’88, Dennis Ventry ’88, and Ian Calip ’88, who also carded 17 under par. We’re already looking forward to next year!

Paul Muller ’67 Helps Lead a Decades-Long Effort to Save Lives
When stainless steel netting quietly appeared beneath the Golden Gate Bridge in 2024, most people saw a subtle change to a familiar landmark. Paul Muller ’67 saw something else: the culmination of a decades-long, deeply personal campaign led by grieving families who refused to give up.
Paul, who co-founded the Bridge Rail Foundation, was named to the 2025 TIME100 Health list for his role in the project. He’s quick to point out, however, that the honor really belongs to the parents who transformed their loss into relentless advocacy.
“My interaction with this happened by accident,” he says. In the spring of 2004, Paul was finishing a consulting project with the Psychiatric Foundation of Northern California, which was working to address homelessness in San Francisco, when their board chair raised a different topic: the high rate of suicides at the Golden Gate Bridge. Paul was asked to serve as a consultant on what would become a 20-year project that would meaningfully reduce the number of lives lost at the bridge each year.
A Defining Insight
The chairman handed Paul a medical textbook on suicide prevention and pointed him to chapters on “access restriction” – the idea that if the means to take your own life aren’t easily available, the lethal impulse will likely subside before you’re able to act.
“My jaw dropped,” he recalls. “I’ve lived in the Bay Area for 99% of my life, and suicide at the bridge was just kind of, ‘Yeah, somebody ought to do something about that.’ But this was different. It was so easy to jump over that short railing, and the numbers were astronomical.”
At the end of 2003, The New Yorker published a harrowing story with a one-word title: Jumpers. The story brought significant public attention to the Golden Gate Bridge as the world’s leading suicide location, with someone jumping off it every two weeks on average. Paul began connecting with families who had been directly impacted – those who had lost loved ones and the very few who had survived the fall. When initial efforts with the psychiatric group stalled, two parents approached him about starting something new: an organization solely focused on ending suicides at the Golden Gate Bridge.
Together, Paul and those parents founded the all-volunteer Bridge Rail Foundation.
Advocacy Over Engineering
“They turned out to be very effective at recruiting other parents,” Paul says. As the foundation grew, he helped organize advocacy efforts as a board member and became president in 2017. In the Bridge Rail Foundation’s early days, Paul assumed the biggest obstacle would be engineering. Instead, he discovered that the real challenge was changing hearts and minds.
“What was really challenging was getting people past preconceived notions about suicide, which is simply, ‘Well, if somebody decides to do it, you can’t really stop them,’” he explains. It seemed like a problem that had a sure enough solution but lacked political will and the large-scale funding and resources needed.
The Golden Gate Bridge is governed by a 19-member board, representing counties from San Francisco north to Del Norte. Over many years, Paul and fellow advocates prepared testimony, marshaled research, and helped families share their stories at key public hearings. The Marin County Coroner, who processes deaths from the bridge, testified about the sheer number and range of lives lost – a presentation Paul remembers as “very impactful and very powerful.”
At one pivotal meeting in the late 2000s, the foundation’s advocacy helped persuade the board to formally explore barrier designs. Earlier proposals for taller railings had been rejected on aesthetic grounds. Eventually, architects proposed a net system inspired by a successful installation in Bern, Switzerland, where extending a net 20 feet from a popular jumping site had reduced suicide occurrences by nearly 100%.
The Long Road to Completion
Once the Golden Gate Bridge District accepted the net proposal, a new phase began: the long, technical work of final design, wind-tunnel testing, permits, and funding. Paul and others had already framed the project as highway safety, opening the door to state and federal transportation dollars. They worked with regional agencies and elected officials to secure the necessary approvals. In 2017, the Bridge District approved the construction contract. Net construction began in 2018 and was completed in early 2024.
During those years, Paul says, it was families from the Bridge Rail Foundation who kept the effort anchored. One couple, whose son died by suicide from the bridge, attended nearly every bridge district board meeting for about a decade, holding their son’s photograph as they told his story time after time.
“Social change requires a great deal of energy and genuine sacrifice,” Paul reflects. “This process required people to bear the pain of their families and share it in such a way that other families wouldn’t suffer the same loss. These people were willing to put their stories out there and fight for something that can’t resolve the pain they have, but might keep others from experiencing it. It’s a real, genuine personal sacrifice and a real giving back to the community.”
According to the Golden Gate Bridge Highway & Transportation District, “Over the last 20 years, on average, there were 30 confirmed suicides at the Bridge every year. In 2024, one year after the net was completed, there were eight suicides at the Bridge, reducing the annual number of suicides by 73%.”
A Model for Change
The impact extends far beyond San Francisco. Coverage of the Golden Gate story has inspired efforts to secure other bridges and tall structures across the United States and abroad. Paul has fielded inquiries from advocates in more than a dozen states and in countries such as Canada and the U.K., many of whom are now pursuing their own lifesaving projects.
Paul sees this story as a case study in how change really happens.
“Golden Gate is a very small, focused social change package,” he says. “If you think about the really large social change movements we’ve had in the United States – civil rights, women’s rights – those things did not come about without real significant personal sacrifice. People stuck with it and kept playing the cards they were dealt, and they were able to see genuine progress. But it’s a tough road.”
It’s also, he insists, a road worth walking.
The net under the Golden Gate Bridge is a visible reminder of that truth: of parents who showed up, month after month, and of alumni like Paul Muller ’67 who quietly live out what it means to be people for and with others, even when the work takes 20 years.
Thank you for reading about the work of Paul Muller ’67 and the Bridge Rail Foundation. If you or someone you know might be at risk for suicide, call or text 988.

Jim Healey ’54, along with his brother Jack ’46 and his daughter Erin, made his third trip down Route 66 last year. Jim sang with the band “Banjos By the Bay” for seven years, published two textbooks and several poems, spent time acting and doing magic shows, and wrote 29 songs, including “We Are Bellar-men” which he sings annually at Bellarmine’s Golden Reunion dinner.
John A. Sobrato ’56 was honored by PACT (People Acting in Community Together) at the organization’s Leadership Luncheon on October 14, 2025. The event was held at the Mexican Heritage Plaza in San Jose. During his remarks, John, who was recognized for his longtime commitment to philanthropy in Silicon Valley, particularly his organization’s efforts to provide educational opportunities to the most vulnerable and marginalized members of the community, credited his family and his Jesuit education at Bellarmine and Santa Clara University with his value system. Fr. John Baumann ’56 was also in attendance in support of PACT and of his Bellarmine classmate.
1960s
Terry Dugan ’62 writes, “I delighted in the (Summer 2025) article about Daxton Zucek ’27 and his photographic work. I was immediately transported back to my days as the photographer for the Cardinal newspaper and the wonderful experiences we had. Beyond hauling the big 4x5 speed graphic and strobe camera all over campus and shooting all the sports and activities, with Fr. Bill Rewak’s inspiration, we did a column starting in 1959 interviewing all over the Bay Area. What a treat for a high school kid to meet Willie Mays, Dave Brubek, Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee, the Kingston Trio, and many more big names at the time. Ultimately, I was able to parlay my photography into a full scholarship at USF working on the yearbook. I wish Daxton success and an exciting future working with cameras and techniques we never dreamed of 65 years ago!”
Vic Giacalone ’64, the Bellarmine Hall of Famer, in June was featured in the The Valley Catholic’s series “Loving Christ in the Unhoused,” highlighting his longtime volunteer work for the Order of Malta visiting, advocating, and providing food and supplies for unhoused people in San Jose.

The Overlooked Form That Shapes Your Legacy: Why Reviewing and Updating Your Beneficiary Designations Matters More Than You Think
by Bill Colucci, Esq. ’82, Director of Planned Giving
When most people think of estate planning, they picture wills, trusts, and perhaps a power of attorney or healthcare directive. But one essential element of an effective estate plan often receives the least attention, and it can determine where the majority of your wealth actually goes.
Beneficiary Designations
Retirement accounts, life insurance policies, annuities, bank accounts with “payable-on-death” (POD) designations, and brokerage accounts with “transfer-on-death” (TOD) instructions do not follow the instructions in your will. They pass directly to the beneficiaries you have named with the financial institution.
Today’s families accumulate accounts gradually across jobs, moves, and stages of life: a 401(k) from an employer ten years ago; a Roth IRA opened as a New Year’s resolution; a life insurance policy purchased when children were born; a brokerage account created during the rise of online investing.
Each account asks: “Who do you want to receive this when you die?” Usually, you type in a name and move on.
But those names are legally binding – and if your will or trust says one thing and the beneficiary form says another, the beneficiary form almost always wins.
When Real Life Changes but the Beneficiary Form Does Not Life changes often, with marriages, divorces, births, deaths, new relationships, reconciliations, fallings-out. With each change, your wishes might shift; but unless you update your beneficiary forms, the financial institutions will carry out the wishes you indicated years or even decades ago.
Case law and news articles about estate planning contain many examples of such beneficiary designation issues, which often result in surprised, angry, or hurt individuals. In most of those cases, the beneficiary designation form will prevail over the terms of a will or trust.
The “Missing Contingent Beneficiary” Problem
Suppose you name your spouse as beneficiary of your IRA, and then your spouse passes away before you. If you have not named a contingent beneficiary, the account typically defaults to your estate, which generally means the IRA becomes part of the probate process; beneficial tax treatment may be lost; and the distribution options for children or other heirs become more restrictive.
This means adding a contingent beneficiary could preserve the value of the account and prevent a complicated estate administration.
The Special Concern with Minors
Parents sometimes make the loving but problematic decision to name their minor children directly as beneficiaries. Financial institutions cannot legally release retirement funds or insurance proceeds to a minor, so a court will appoint a guardian to manage the money, which can be costly and restrictive. Better ways to love and provide for your children through planning include naming a trust, a Uniform Transfers to Minors Act (UTMA) custodian, or an adult guardian.
Why Naming “My Estate” Usually Creates More Problems Than It Solves
It’s not uncommon to intentionally name your estate as a beneficiary –but doing so comes with complications. The account may now have to go through probate. Taxes may increase. Inherited IRA rules become more rigid. Creditors may gain access to the funds. Far from simplifying the
administration of an estate, it often introduces the exact problems the account structure was designed to avoid.
Beneficiary Designations and Charitable Legacies
For those who wish to support the charities they love such as Bellarmine College Prep, beneficiary designations offer one of the simplest and most tax-efficient ways to leave a legacy.
Retirement accounts, for example, are ideal to leave to charity because nonprofits do not pay income tax. If you leave a $200,000 IRA to your children, they may keep only a portion after taxes, whereas a charity can put the full amount to work immediately. Many donors choose to leave retirement assets to charity and leave more tax-efficient assets like homes or appreciated investments to their families.
Others take a blended approach: “40% to Daughter, 40% to Son, and 20% to Bellarmine.” Still others say, “My children are my primary beneficiaries, but if they are no longer living, I want Bellarmine College Prep to be the contingent beneficiary.” Of course, estate planning professionals will craft the proper language to match your needs and wishes.
These are elegant, powerful gifts which can often be made by simply updating a beneficiary form.
How to Quickly Review Your Beneficiary Designations
Consulting with an estate planning lawyer or tax advisor beforehand is a good idea, but you do not need either one to effectuate changes to your beneficiary designations.
To start, you can list every account that might have a beneficiary designation. For example: all retirement accounts (401(k), 403(b), 457, IRA); Life insurance policies; Annuities; Bank accounts with POD designations; Brokerage accounts with TOD instructions; and certain HSAs or pension benefits.
Next, you can view the beneficiary designations on the account’s website or request the current beneficiary information from each institution.
Finally, update what needs updating: add full legal names, include both primary and contingent beneficiaries, coordinate with your will or trust, and if you have minor beneficiaries, make sure an appropriate custodianship or trust structure is named.
The best practice is to check these designations every three years, or whenever life changes.
A Simple Act with Lifelong Impact
