BMO is proud to be the Production Sponsor of If you Could Read My Mind: The Songs of Gordon Lightfoot
What a great time to be celebrating a Canadian icon and Canadian songs—!
Welcome to If You Could Read My Mind: The Songs of Gordon Lightfoot. And what glorious, personal, and emotionally complex songs they are—! It is my hope that this performance will help you to hear them with fresh ears—and allow you to find new beauty and meaning in the words and music.
If you have half as good a time watching this show as I have had working on it— you will leave the theatre with a smile on your face. Collaborating with Tobin Stokes is always a pure joy—the man is a cheerful genius. And these five actor-singermusicians have not only brought their prodigious talent—but have also contributed so much throughout the process. They really are our co-creators. My thanks to everyone connected with this show. It has filled my heart with joy. And my deepest gratitude to you—for being here with us at this performance. And for making the Belfry a part of your life.
I hope you enjoy this musical tribute to the late great Gordon Lightfoot, and I hope to see you back here in the fall—for another all-Canadian season—!
With my very best wishes to you and yours for the remainder of this Spring and the coming Summer—
I didn’t grow up on Gordon Lightfoot, but when the cast were rehearsing, I heard so many familiar songs, which I had no idea he had written. They conjured up long buried memories of the voices of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and of course, Peter, Paul, and Mary. It is lovely to hear those lyrics again, decades later, this time with a very different resonance. I am sure you will enjoy the experience too.
As we come to the end of yet another season, I am always grateful for your support, as both ticket buyers and donors. You allow us to maintain our high standards of production. Thank you for accompanying us on this artistic journey. I look forward to seeing you next season. Enjoy the show!
