Welcome to the Belfry’s 2025–2026 season—our 50th season—and my last as the company’s Artistic Director. And welcome to 1979, a comedy about politics and ethics, and the rare moments at which they intersect.
I originally programmed Michael Healey’s play for April–May of 2020. Glynis Leyshon and the cast were just a week away from the beginning of rehearsals when the pandemic forced us to shut the theatre down.
With the rumours that Justin Trudeau was going to call an election in the Fall of 2025, it seemed like a great time to re-program Michael’s political comedy. Then the American President announced his designs to make us the 51st state and slapped outrageous tariffs on us. Trudeau stepped down, Mark Carney was elected in the Spring, and suddenly our politics and our politicians shone like diamonds in the mud. All of which has contrived to make this the ideal time to present a play that examines politics, and the line between the winning move and the moral choice.
Elbows (and scruples) up!
FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
It is such a pleasure to welcome this fantastic team who have brought you this great production. As I write this, I hear them rehearsing loudly and enthusiastically in the rehearsal hall next to my office. I hope the production gives all of you as much joy, and perhaps, also, a pause to reflect on our tumultuous world today.
You may have noticed some changes when you bought your tickets or subscriptions to the show. We have had a busy summer. Kudos to our staff for riding the wave of learning a completely new integrated ticketing-donations-marketing system.
Thank you again for joining us for our 50th Season. It bears repeating that so many have built and sustained the Belfry for us to reach this point in time. Staff, boards, volunteers, donors, sponsors, community partners, audiences—it is this extended community that collectively make the Belfry. So, here’s to our 50th!

R EMEMBERI ng A lE g E n D — A n D A FRIE n D
On July 28, Canadian theatre lost one of its most talented and most acclaimed actors and directors, Joseph Ziegler. He was 71.
Born in Minneapolis, Joe came to Canada to study at the National Theatre School, and—to the great good fortune of theatre in this country—never left.
I first met Joe at Stratford, first directed him in Toronto, and had a long and cherished working relationship with him. He set a standard that I always aspired to meet. Our most significant collaboration was on Soulpepper’s perennial production of A Christmas Carol, in which Joe was a fierce presence as Ebenezer Scrooge. I have lost track of how many times we mounted that production—it was well over a dozen—and never did he fail to move me to tears.
Joe Ziegler first appeared at the Belfry in 1980 in a production of Da, and returned two years later for Mass Appeal. His only other performance on this stage was in 2019, in Lucy Kirkwood’s play The Children, opposite Brenda Robins and Joe’s wife (and former NTS classmate), Nancy Palk. Shortly after returning from Victoria, Joe played Scrooge for the last time, and it was the last time he “trod the boards.”
We have lost a legend. I am blessed to have worked with him and doubly blessed to have called him my friend. And I am especially thrilled that we all got to see him on the Belfry stage one last time.
