And now, I am so thrilled to welcome playwright and director Mieko Ouchi. I have long been a or fan of Mieko’s writing—in particular her hugely ks Ph o to successful plays The Blue Light and The Red Violin (Eight graphy Ways to Say Goodbye). But I also remember her well from her starring role in Anne Wheeler’s film The War Between Us. To have her here at the Belfry for the first time has been a wonderful gift—as is this play—! The second treat for me is to have Susinn McFarlen back on our stage. Susinn starred in our production of Michele Riml’s on the edge, early on in my tenure here. But my relationship with Susinn goes back to Glynis Leyshon’s time at the Vancouver Playhouse, when Glynis hired me to direct a number of musicals. Together with Susinn as Dolly Levi, we were immersed in the heartfelt Thornton Wilder-ness of Hello, Dolly! As I entrust you to the safe hands of these two amazing pros—I am confident that you are about to embark on a happy and emotional journey—! Thank you for joining us and helping us celebrate 50 seasons of theatre—!

I am always blown away when I see our sets, lovingly engineered, built and painted in our shops just behind this stage. We have a great team and staff who have brought this piece to vivid life—congratulations to all of them.

I know you will love this show. When I read it, the whole world of this play jumped to life for me, o to graphy with every character and every situation movingly and lovingly crafted. Seizing a moment, an opportunity, or a risk, completely resonates with me; alongside the fear, trepidation and foreboding that uncomfortably need to be overcome in doing so. This play reminds me also of the joy in making that leap. With great pleasure we share some of that joy with you. or
