Bedworth United v WANTAGE TOWN

FROM THE DUGOUT good AFTERNOON everyone. I would like to extend a warm welcome to the officials, staff and supporters of WANTAGE Town to THE OVAL for toDAY’s LEAGUE FIXTURE. I hope you all enjoy the game, facilities and have a safe trip home. We have had our usual slow start to the campaign, but I have seen some green shoots growing with our last performance. We played well against Halesowen but playing 80 minutes without a goalkeeper was another example of fighting against the odds. For those of you that understand football you would have appreciated the effort and determination in getting back into the match. I was pleased with the attitude and spirit we showed, and results will follow. The season is a marathon and not a sprint and the standard of the league is decent, fortunately we do not have teams in our league that will run away with it and every team is beatable. We have had a very tough start playing many of the fancied teams for promotion and these are the levels we need to aspire too. I still believe we are a top half of the table side, but players need to step up to the plate and believe this. I have been extremely pleased with the two new signings of Blaize Punter and Dan Preston, both strong experienced defenders which were needed in the squad after losing Tom Sharpe to a knee injury, that’s requiring surgery. As always, we will be looking to keep improving the squad and keep competition high for the starting eleven.

Stay positive and enjoy the game. Stuart

Bedworth United v WANTAGE TOWN

AWAY END

Wantage Town FC (the Freds) has been affiliated to the Berks and Buck FA since 1892. Prior to this, they played in the Swindon & District North Berks and Reading & District Leagues., achieving success in 1903-04 in the Swindon Advertiser Cup, which they repeated in 1907-08 as well as becoming the League Champions. After the 1st World War, the Freds briefly played in the North Berks League, winning the North Berks Cup in 1920 and 1921 and the Championship in 1921-22. After a brief period playing in the Reading& District League with no success then re-entered the Swindon & District League, winning the title in 1933-34. The Fifties was the most successful period for the Club, winning the League in 1952-53 (without losing a game) and again in 1955-56, while in 1954-55, the Freds won no fewer than five cup competitions, including the Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup. Since joining the Hellenic League in 1956, Wantage have spent most of their seasons in the Premier Division, Their best finish in the Premier Division had been third place on three occasions - 1973-74, 82-83 and 93-94 but have won promotion from Division 1 on six occasions - as runners-up in 1969-70, 1987-88, 1991-92 (where they set a club record of 32 games unbeaten) and 1995-96, and as Champions in 1980-81 and 2003-4. Season 2003/2004 was one of the Freds most successful. The First Team won Division One East to regain its position in the Premier League of the GLS Hellenic Football League, and the Reserves finished top of their league, also winning promotion. The Reserves success was repeated in 2004/2005 as they secured the Reserve Division One title. The First Team consolidated their Premier League status, finishing in 10th place. In 2010-11, the Freds won the Premier League title, but despite great effort on the part of the Club management, they were not promoted to the Southern League due to ground grading criteria not being achieved. In the 20122013 season, the club achieved the Southern League Ground grading, but finished runners-up to a very strong Marlow, and again missed out on promotion. The 2013-2014 saw a great season for the Freds . The First Team won the Uhlsport Hellenic Premier league title, and with the appropriate ground grading in place, promotion to Division One (South and West) of the Southern League. The Reserves, as Runners Up, were promoted to Division One (West) of the Uhlsport Hellenic League, and the ‘A’ Team squad also gained promotion from the North Berks League to Division Two (West) of the Uhlsport Hellenic League. Despite the turbulent start of season 2014-15, which saw a change of management in the First Team and a number of key players depart, the First Team retained their position in Division One (South and West) of the Southern League, and the Allied Youth team win the Allied County Cup. Following the installation of the floodlights in 1996, the Club has continued to invest in the upgrading of the facilities at Alfredian Park. In the past sixteen years the main pitch has been renewed and a training pitch has been established. Two new and additional pitches have been formed north of the Clubhouse, enabling five full sized pitches (including the adjacent School pitches) to be used by the growing number of teams supported by the Club. The old stands have been replaced with a new stand.

AROUND THE CLUB Its been a long time since I updated you on all of the clubs teams now that their seasons are well underway here is a roundup of how they are all getting on.

LADIES

The Ladies first team haven’t had the start to the season that they would have hoped for in the 4th Tier of ladies football, but have got points on the board against some tough opposition. They opened their season against Sporting Khalsa at The OVAL going behind in the first 2 minutes they fought hard and took a 2-1 lead into the break only to be pegged back in injury time. The game finished a 2-2 draw. The Greenbacks ladies then had a home tie in the Womens national league cup and after a hard fought game they eventually ran out 4-2 winners after extra time knocking Stockport County out of the cup. After the win in the cup it was back to league action with a visit to Lincoln City where they narrowly lost 2-1, it was then Back to The OVAL on a wet Wednesday night to face Birmingham and West Midlands yet another enjoyable game saw the ladies draw 2-2 again. The following Saturday saw the ladies travel the long distance to TNS in wales and unfortunately had the long journey home nursing a 4-2 defeat. The girls then took the long journey to Norton and Stockton Ancients in the 2nd round of the Womens national league cup where they travelled up on the Saturday but unfortunately got knocked out after losing 4-2. They were then back in league action here at The OVAL losing 8-0 to Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Ladies Development team who are playing in the Reserve Midland division 2 this season had their first game away at Wolverhampton Wanderers Development where unfortunately they lost 4-1 their next game saw them travel across the border into Wales to face Cardiff reserves where they were on the wrong end of a 6-0 scoreline.

U21/YOUTH

The U21 have had a storming start to their season negotiating a tricky away tie against Silhill u21 in the Midland football league bowl running out 3-2 winners. The lads in green then started their league campaign with a resounding 4-0 win against NFK Burbage U21 and by all accounts had it not been for poor finishing could have doubled that score line. With a game last Saturday against Rushden and Diamonds producing a 6-0 scoreline in the Greenbacks favour the U21s are unbeaten at this stage of the season, hopefully it will stay this way for the future. The U18 youth team started their league campaign in the Midland Floodlit league with a home game against Coton Green which finished 2 all. Next up was a 3-1 win against local rivals Coventry Sphinx, unfortunately though the young Greenbacks they went out of the FA youth cup at the first hurdle after being drawn against Alvechurch’s academy it was always going to be mountain against a team of that standard but the lads did well with a 4-1 scoreline flattering the hosts. Their next game was back in the league and a trip to Coton Green on a Thursday night where they again drew with a 1 -1 scoreline but were extremely unlucky as Coton Greens equaliser came from the last kick of the game. The following Wednesday saw them host Rugby Borough and come away with all 3 points after a 3-0 win. The newly formed under 19s started life in the new Midweek MJPL league with a 3-1 loss to Bilbrook Juniors, their next game saw them face AFC Birmingham youth development at The OVAL in a game that ended in a 4-4 draw with the boys in green grabbing a point after equalising in the last 3 minutes. Wednesday night saw Dudley Town FC visit The Oval in a very one sided game the lads in green ran out 6-0 winners. The Sunday Youth team started life in the Tamworth league with a 2-2 draw against Elford Boys FC Dynamo the game was soured by one of the Bedworth lads, Aiden Barrow being taken away by ambulance after breaking his tibia resulting in surgery. I am sure I can speak for all of us and wish him luck in his recovery.

JUNIORS

The Juniors have had a mixed bag of results the under 16 MJPL side ran out 3-0 victors against Bromsgrove Sporting in their first game and then took all 3 points in a 2-1 victory against Aylestone Park to have a 100% start to the season. The Under 15 MJPL side in their first outing in the league were on the wrong end of a 7-1 result going 5 down in the first 20 minutes in a game where nerves got to a few of them, They then rallied for their second game and won 3-0 here at The OVAL against a very organised Allscot side to give them their first win and 3 points of their journey in the MJPL, There next game saw them face Bilbrook who finished fifth in the league last year the lads in green d were holding them 2-2 at half time and after missing a penalty to go 3-2 in front eventually lost 4-2. The Sunday teams in the Coventry and Warwickshire youth league had a mixed bag of results. The Under 16s competing in the C league in their age group had their first game away to Southam United after going into the half time break 1-0 up they hit the gas in the second half and eventually ran out 6-1 winners, their second game was a close affair drawing 2-2 at home to Kenilworth Town The Under 15 jnrs starting life in the B league had a 6-4 victory away against Alvis Junior colts to start their campaign with a win and then followed it up with a 3-1 win against Alvis colts to take maximum points from their first 2 games. The Under 15 Lions competing in the A 10

Bedworth United v WANTAGE TOWN

AROUND THE CLUB league of their age group came from 2-1 down at half time to eventually beat rivals Coventry Copeswood 3-2 in an extremely physical game where both sides were fortunate to end up with 11 players on the pitch. They then played in the first round of the Bedworth Nursing Cup, a competition they have never got past the first round in, and it looked like that was going to be the same again when after 7 minutes they found themselves 2-0 down to Coventry United but after the slow start they rallied and eventually managed to win the game 3-2 to set up a second round game against none other than the other Bedworth United side playing in the same age group, They then had a league game against Coventry Sphinx and again after a slow start and going a goal behind came back to win 3-1. The Under 14s had their first game in the B league of their age group after being all level at 2-2 at half time the boys in green battled hard to eventually run out 5-4 winners. The newly formed U14 girls in their first ever game found going tough against the established team of Leamington Lions but credit to the girls continued to work hard and were rewarded with their first ever goal in competitive football. Unfortunately both the Under 13 jnrs and the Under 13 warriors competing in the B league both lost their opening fixtures the Jnrs by the odd goal in five away to Firefighters Junior Rangers and the Warriors to a 7-3 scoreline at The OVAL to Christ the King Juniors Blue, The Jnrs then resoundingly beat Leamington 6-2 meanwhile the Warriors lost 3-0 to Sphinx. The Under 12 Juniors had a resounding 6-2 win against Chapelfield Colts Crusaders in the E league, The Under 12s Warriors on the other hand were on the wrong end of a 5-1 scoreline against Coventry Copeswood Colts in the D league of their age group. The under 11 Jnrs who are in the U11 Singer League. The U11 Aztecs who are in the Leofric League started of their season with 2 losses 1 to 1 Southam United minor and the other to Firefighters. The U11 Mavericks who play in the Tamworth league suffered a 4-2 defeat to St Johns, after controlling most of the game they were unfortunate in that they encountered the 10 year old equivalent of David De Gea who made to many to count world class saves to win the game for his team. From under 10 down we are not allowed to publish results but I can assure you the clubs U9s and U8s have great starts to the season with lots of goals and fun being had by the younger age groups and definitely some superstars in the making coming through the ranks. For more information on all the junior teams please visit the website Bedworthunitedfc.co.uk for the league tables please see the club noticeboards. If you think that coaching or assisting with one of the junior teams is for you then please get in contact with Liam Moore even if your level of football knowledge isn’t great there are always roles that can be filled for example Welfare Officer, Team secretary, Teams Social Media to name just a few. If you want to have an impact on todays youth and to help give kids something to do then football is a massive way of getting kids off the streets and into something productive. As you can see from the above we have 28 teams (not including the First Team) currently playing across 7 different leagues. All of these leagues have to have a club representative so you can see how time consuming for the small number of volunteers this can be. If you want to volunteer at the club be it for the Ladies, The Juniors, The Youth or U21 there are always roles that need to be filled. For more information on all the junior teams please visit the website Bedworthunitedfc.co.uk for the league tables please see the club noticeboards. FLASHBACK

A look back at some interesting football events around todays date. 26th September 1998 The headlines were from Hillsborough where Sheffield Wednesday defeated Arsenal 1-0 in the Premier League. Wednesday’s Paolo Di Canio was sent off and he then pushed ref Paul Alcock who fell to the ground in a very dramatic manner. Di Cano was later charged with misconduct - he was banned for 11 matches and fined £10,000.

27th September 2003 Following their much-criticized move from South London Wimbledon played their first ‘home’ League match at the National Hockey Stadium in Milton Keynes, drawing 2-2 with Burnley. They didn’t change their name to MK Dons until the start of the 2004/05 season.

27th September 2016 We woke up to find England manager Sam Allardyce making front page headlines in the Daily Telegraph. In a newspaper ‘sting’ he had been filmed advising undercover reporters how to get around FA rules on third-party ownership of footballers, criticising his predecessor Roy Hodgson and the England players and arranging a £400,000 a year speaking engagement contract. By the end of the day by ‘mutual consent’ he was the ex-England manager losing his £3 million a year job after just 67 days. Mind you, with an England record of played one and won one that made him statistically the best England manager of all time! 28th September 1892 An early kick off in a First Preliminary Round FA Cup between Burton Swifts, in Division 2 of the Football League, and non-leaguers Singers of Coventry – 8 o’clock in the morning! 30

FLASHBACK 29th September 2007 Two clubs have scored 9 goals in a Premier Division match – Manchester United (9-0 v Ipswich in 1995) and Spurs (9-1 v Wigan in 2009) – but on this day in 2007 a new record was set for the most goals in a Premier League fixture when eleven goals were scored at Portsmouth in their match against Reading. The 20,102 Fratton Park crowd certainly got value for money that day - Portsmouth were 2-1 up at half time but at the final whistle it was Portsmouth 7 Reading 4. There were nine different goalscorers in the match with Portsmouth’s Benjani Mwaruwari scoring three of them, another two were own-goals and one was a penalty – with another penalty being saved. 30th September 1961 There was a more innocent time when the most popular gamble in the country was the Football Pools and the winners often became media personalities. Most famous of those was Viv Nicholson who on September 30th 1961 with her husband won £152319 18s 8d for a five bob (25p) bet. That was a win of over £3.5m in todays money. But she couldn’t escape the media attention and within 5 years her husband had been been killed in a car crash and she was nearly skint.Years later both a book and a West End musical about her life had the same title Spend, Spend, Spend. 1st October 1996 After weeks of speculation and waiting Arsène Wenger finally has his first day in charge of Arsenal. He was not a universally popular appointment. Ex Barcelona manager Johan Cruyff had been favourite for the job so the appointment of an unknown Frenchman managing Grampus Eight in Japan was met by a London Evening Standard headline of ‘Arsene who?’ and a nation trying to come to terms with how to pronounce his name. Things would change! 4th October 2014

Newcastle United fans thought of a novel way of protesting against their manager, Alan Pardew, on an away-day Premier League visit to Swansea City. They unveiled an apt banner - ‘Not a Welsh town, our form in 2014’ - which detailed their poor playing form in 2014, mainly Ls and Ds. It proved to be an immediate hit with the media although a few newspapers did spend far too long listing all the Welsh towns that don’t have a vowel in their name! For the record it was another D that day (2-2) while Pardew stayed in the job for another 3 months before deciding that a move to Crystal Palace would benefit his career.
