These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Home Counties Loft Ladders come in.

The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50sqft of boarding and in less than a day from just £444! But it’s not just the affordability of the package that makes Home Counties Loft Ladders stand out, as manager Jamie Oakley explains: ‘Our

watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages tradesmen, so our customers are assured of the best job.

Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.

Our business relies on referrals and we get a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers

- that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.

At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for

every installation we carry out!’

So, if you want to make use of your loft space, call Jamie free on 0808 301 9559 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

Charity Treecycling

Sue Ryder, the palliative, neurological and bereavement support charity, is encouraging residents to keep spreading the festive cheer into the new year by signing up to have their Christmas trees collected and recycled to raise vital funds for families needing their care.

After the festivities are over, Sue Ryder volunteers will be collecting real Christmas trees direct from people’s front door or driveway so that they can be chipped into mulch and recycled.

For a donation, people who live in MK40, MK42, MK43, MK44 and MK45 postcodes can have their trees collected between Saturday 7th and Tuesday 10th January 2023. All money raised will help Sue Ryder to continue offering its compassionate palliative care and bereavement support – helping its teams be there when it matters.

Find out more about the environmentally friendly fundraising collection drive and book a collection by Tuesday 3rd January 2023 at www.sueryder.org/bedfordshiretrees.

Lunchtime Learning at The Forest

Learning Lunchtime talks are free events that take place every Monday at The Forest of Marston Vale. Their 2023 programme kicks off with some fascinating topics in January.

The first talk on 9th January covers the work of the Humanimal Trust which was established in 2014 by Professor Noel Fitzpatrick a ground-breaking orthopaedic-neuro veterinary surgeon. The Trust drives collaboration between vets, doctors, and researchers so that all humans and animals benefit from equal and sustainable medical progress but not at the expense of an animal’s life.

Join Stephen Tonkin, Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, on 16th January who highlights ten ways the universe is trying to kill you! Find out about gamma-ray bursts to asteroid impacts, and everything in between – this is an overview of cataclysmic events. This light-hearted but scientifically robust approach incorporates many fundamental cosmological processes, from stellar evolution to galactic interaction.

On 23rd January, The Dogs Trust presentation covers the charity’s history, as well as the work they are currently doing, and how supporters can get involved with donations and volunteer opportunities. It also features some fabulous dogs!

Talks are around an hour with time for questions. As there is a cost involved in putting on the Learning Lunchtime talks, donations to the Forest of Marston Vale are much appreciated. www.marstonvale.org

Suspension of Marston Train

The Marston Vale Line services have been suspended following confirmation that Vivarail (the company which maintains the trains) has entered administration.

Without the guarantee of effective maintenance cover for the fleet, London Northwestern Railway has taken the decision to temporarily suspend the service whilst a solution is found.

In the meantime, a full rail replacement bus service (all stations and limited stop) will be provided, including a replacement bus stop in Stewartby. This is located at the entrance to the disused Brickworks for services towards Bedford and from the pavement just before the level crossing near platform 1 for services towards Bletchley. All vehicles are accessible.

Please note that bus drivers are unable to issue rail tickets. In order to travel, rail tickets should be purchased from either a staffed station, the Ticket Vending Machine (TVM) at unstaffed stations, or via www.londonnorthwesternrailway.co.uk. Tickets purchased online can be collected at any TVM.

The rail replacement bus timetable can be downloaded at www.marstonvalecommunityrail.org.uk

New Bike Repair Station

Central Bedfordshire Council have installed a series of new bike repair stations for residents, including one at the Millennium Country Park, as part of a suite of wider improvements to cycling infrastructure.

The repair station contains a stand to mount a bike on, an integrated multi-valve pump and a series of tools such as screwdrivers, spanners, hex keys, and tyre levers. These allow cyclists to make minor repairs on-the-go, such as inflating flat tyres, replacing inner tubes, raising seat heights and other adjustments. They are also available for users of wheelchairs and prams, if needed.

Councillor Steven Dixon, Executive Member for Sustainability and Public Protection, said: “The new bike repair stations are in visible and easily accessible areas of our towns, leisure centres and close to cycle routes and local facilities. We’re currently engaging with towns and villages across Central Bedfordshire on proposed route networks as part of our emerging Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans (LCWIPs) and the new bike repair stations help support cycling to become the first choice of active travel for short journeys.” Check out the repair station next time you are cycling at the Millennium Country Park!

Petite-

A Nation of Shopkeepers: The Unstoppable rise of the

Bourgeoisie

Lifting the lid on the UK’s modern class structure, Daniel Evans’ forthcoming book, A Nation of Shopkeepers: The Unstoppable Rise of the Petite-Bourgeoisie, focuses on the class of people existing between the working class and the bourgeoisie – those shopkeepers, smalltime landlords and self-employed artisans who were expected to be swallowed up by monopoly capitalism, but who’ve actually grown in recent years.

Referring to them as a “mysterious class”, he investigates what their seemingly unstoppable rise might mean for the Left..

You Are Not Alone

Cariad Lloyd losing her father at 15 inspired her award-winning podcast, Griefcast, in which she talks to celebrities about navigating their own experiences of loss.

In You Are Not Alone, the comedian and writer explores society’s reluctance to talk about death and its impact. Amid stories from those she’s interviewed, including Stephen Mangan, Sara Pascoe, and Adam Buxton, are Lloyd’s own thoughts on therapy and friends as, amongst other things, she debunks ‘the five stages of grief’ in appraising loss and heartache in all its unexpected forms.

Jay Shetty, author of the no.1 New York Times bestseller Think Like a Monk, offers a revelatory guide to every stage of romance, drawing on ancient wisdom and new science.

Instead of presenting love as an ethereal concept or a collection of cliches, Shetty lays out specific, actionable steps to help you develop the skills to practise and nurture love better than ever before.

He shares eight rules, each teaching and empowering, detailing how to win or lose together, how to define love, and why you don’t ‘break’ in a break-up, and more.

Look Both Ways

by Linwood Barclay

Linwood Barclay introduces us to Sandra Montrose, who hasn’t been the same since her husband died after he fell asleep at the wheel of his car, leaving her a single mother to Archie and Katie.

When, in an experiment, the cars on Garrett Island are switched for driverless vehicles called Arrivals. Sandra is hesitant. Sure enough, as the day of the big reveal gets underway, a member of the press has gone missing and there are rumours of industrial sabotage.

Shortly afterwards, the sleek driverless cars stop taking orders. In fact, they have rules of their own and start targeting the trusting residents of Garrett Island.

BEDFORD BOROUGH WARM SPACES NETWORK

The rise in the cost of living and increased energy bills means that many households will struggle with their heating bills this winter. People will be faced with tough decisions about when they can afford to heat their home.

To help residents, Bedford Borough Council is working with local partners to develop a Warm Spaces network. Warm Spaces will offer free, non-judgemental spaces where people can go to stay warm and maybe enjoy some company and a hot drink, or simply spend time reading a magazine or book. The Warm Spaces network will continue to grow as more organisations share their details.

Woodgreen rehomes thousands of pets every year. With more and more being handed in due to the cost of living crisis, the charity is appealing for local volunteers who can offer their hearts and homes to a temporary furry friend.

Fostering is a hugely rewarding way to help pets in need – meaning you can enjoy their company without the long-term commitment and without the price tag. It doesn’t cost you a penny! When you become a volunteer foster carer, Woodgreen will provide everything you need and cover all expenses, as well as providing you with full training and roundthe-clock support. You’ll make friends with the volunteers that are already enjoying fostering too.

You can apply to foster dogs, cats and/or small pets (like rabbits and guinea pigs), and take care of them until they find a loving new home. This could

around holidays and any commitments you have. Some pets might be recovering from operations, be pregnant or too young to rehome, need further training and support, or just feel happier in a home environment. By opening your door to a homeless pet, it will make space for Woodgreen to help another pet who needs them.

The pets looking for fosterers are best suited to homes without any other animals or small children, but anyone can volunteer – whether you’re an experienced pet owner or you’ve never had a pet. All Woodgreen asks is that you’re aged over 18, you live within 40 minutes of the charity’s centre in Cambridgeshire, and you have the time and love to give to pets like Nugget and Nutcracker (above). To find out more and to apply, please visit woodgreen.org.uk/foster

THE POTTING SHED OF THE GENTLEMAN GARDENER

Hello everyone

I hope you had the Christmas you wanted. Come into the potting shed and get warm; you’re very welcome. I’ve still got some mince pies somewhere, and there’s plenty of hot co ee in my flask.

Well, December saw the first serious frosts and the shortest day on the 21st. Spring is just around the corner, so bring some colour back to the garden by planting fragrant, flowering shrubs such as witch-hazel and bright winter-flowering pansies. Not wanting to wish time away, but something to set your sights on is the clocks going forward on Sunday 26th March.

The wise gardener is always looking ahead, and it’s always best to start as you mean to go on. Why not make it a new year resolution? Forward thinking certainly makes gardening easier and can bring better results. You never keep the resolution about losing weight anyway.

If your lawn was not top dressed last autumn, weather permitting, you should do it now. Sweep it first with a besom to scatter worm casts, leaves, and dead grass. Here’s your first gardening lesson of the year: if you don’t know what a besom is, research it, and I’ll check it with you next month.

Now’s the time for prep work on your vegetable garden. Heavy clay soil, dug over this time of year, benefits from the frost and rain, which helps to break down any large clogs and makes it easier to get a fine tilth when spring arrives.

I hope, like me, you’re looking forward to the growing season in your garden. I find no two seasons are ever the same.

I wish you the very best in your garden this year. Let’s make it the most successful one ever.

My kindest regards The Gentleman Gardener
