These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Home Counties Loft Ladders come in.

The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50sqft of boarding and in less than a day from just £444! But it’s not just the affordability of the package that makes Home Counties Loft Ladders stand out, as manager Jamie Oakley explains: ‘Our

watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages tradesmen, so our customers are assured of the best job.

Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.

Our business relies on referrals and we get a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers

- that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.

At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for

every installation we carry out!’

So, if you want to make use of your loft space, call Jamie free on 0808 301 9559 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

Warm Homes Bedford Borough Launched

Over 1,600 residents with health conditions that can be made worse by living in cold or damp home have been identified from GP records, and eligible residents should automatically receive a letter inviting them to contact Better Housing Better Health with information on how they can apply for free support. This may include:

• Energy saving advice

• Draught-proofing for the home

• Loft and wall insulation

• Heating controls to help save money by only heating rooms that are being used

Bedford Borough residents with long term health conditions could receive free support to help keep their households warm this winter.

Warm Homes Bedford Borough has been set up by Bedford Borough Council and NHS Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Integrated Care Board in partnership with the National Energy Foundation’s warmth and wellbeing service Better Housing Better Health.

Flu Vaccinations

In the last two years, COVID-19 control measures including lockdowns, social distancing and vulnerable groups’ isolation have led to very low levels of flu activity. It is expected that the increased levels of social contact and activity will lead to a resurgence of flu, which may exceed prepandemic levels. Getting the flu vaccine will help to protect you, your family, and your loved ones from the serious consequences of getting the flu this winter.

Below is the list of eligibility for free flu vaccinations under the NHS which can be booked with local pharmacies/GPs and here is a link to finding the closest pharmacy o ering appointments: www.nhs.uk/service-search/pharmacy/find-apharmacy-nhs-flu-vaccine-service

Residents who are not eligible for support under the Warm Homes Bedford Borough service but are struggling to cope with the rising cost of living, can visit www.bedford.gov.uk/costofliving for information about help that is available, or contact Better Housing Better Health for advice about energy costs. Visit www.bhbh.org.uk or call 0800 107 0044 for more information.

Say Hello and Wave Goodbye

With the lyrics of 80’s hit track by Soft Cell in mind, it’s time to say hello to exciting new things that 2023 will bring (including more news on the regeneration of the former Debenhams and Beales of Bedford unit – we are all working on it!) and to reflect on all the great times we’ve had in Bedford in 2022.

We at BedfordBID amongst other things, help promote over 650 shops and businesses and our BedfordBID Champions are out and about helping to keep our town safe and clean. Together we host and promote events and work tirelessly towards making Bedford a town centre to be proud of with a vibrant night time economy and

thriving independent shopping scene. We were also delighted to be involved with the fabulous Bedford Park Concerts.

Sadly, we recently waved goodbye to Next on Midland Road. It’s easy to look at large empty buildings where national retail icons once stood and think there’s nothing in town left. But that’s where you’d be wrong.

Covid may have impacted the traditional High Street and the way we shop, but Bedford’s not all just about the High Street, it’s a place to explore with small family-run shops, courtyards and a modern Riverside area. A town filled with artisan

businesses across all cultures that you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere else.

There are almost double (68.5%) the UK average of independent businesses in Bedford – one on every corner. There are also a number of deals lined up for the current empty units with more new businesses coming to join the 30 new businesses/ relocations already opened this year.

To help make finding shops and services far easier in 2023 we say hello to our brand-new Love Bedford website. It will make life super easy for everyone to find out what’s going on in town and discover more about any town centre business and follow them on social media – even TikTok!

So, let’s look back at some of the times that made us smile last year. Do consider following us on social media @lovebedford on Facebook, @ lovebedford1 on Instagram and @lovebedford on Twitter and online at www.lovebedford.co.uk for all the latest updates about the town, and whilst your there, sign up for our regular newsletter.

If you can, please get involved with the fun events coming up in 2023 that make Bedford special –who doesn’t love a family event in Harpur Square? The King’s Coronation will be here before we know it! Watch this space.

Access to fast, reliable internet connectivity has become a necessity for many residents and local businesses which was further highlighted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Recent figures show that gigabit broadband is now available for 61% of homes and businesses in North East Bedfordshire, which has trebled since 2019 thanks to the government’s £5 billion Project Gigabit. Nearly all (97%) of the constituency now has access to the lower speed, so called “Superfast” Broadband.

The government accepts there is still more to do to complete the rollout to rural areas such as some areas in my constituency. To meet that challenge, it recently announced that it will triple the value of vouchers available under the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme.

Under this scheme, from early 2023, eligible homes and businesses can apply for up to £4,500 to cover the costs of a gigabit-capable

connection. Previously this was capped at £1,500 for homes and £3,500 for businesses. This increased subsidy will enable broadband providers to reach further into rural areas where the build costs can be significantly higher.

The scheme enables households and businesses to club together to increase the total subsidy of a project to cover the costs for installation to eligible areas.

Reliable-fast broadband unlocks jobs and business opportunities. For too long rural communities have been left behind in the digital transition. By tripling the value of gigabit broadband vouchers many rural homes and businesses can benefit from faster connections.

To find out more about the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme, please visit www.gigabitvoucher.culture.gov.uk

How good and how reliable is your broadband? At home? At work? During my regular surgeries around the constituency and meetings with parish councils I hear of pockets of areas where constituents are still unable to receive a high speed broadband or where service is intermittent.

WORDS FROM

Yasin, MP for Bedford and Kempston

As we approach the February anniversary of Putin’s further illegal invasion of Ukraine, I’ve been thinking a lot about the war in Europe.

I’ve been thinking of the millions of families torn apart, the mainly women and children who fled as refugees and the people still there, fighting for their country in sub-zero temperatures. And of course, I think of the tens of thousands who have been killed, wounded and brutalised.

When Russian forces attacked the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, in an attempt to overthrow President Volodymyr Zelensky’s government, it seemed everyone but the Ukrainians thought the war would be over in a matter of days. But after months of fierce resistance and extraordinary leadership, in November Russia was forced into retreat. But the war is far from over. Despite Ukrainian forces enduring almost daily strikes, information fatigue is creeping in as stories about the war drop down the news agenda –even as evidence of atrocities continue to be documented.

At the end of November, Ukraine’s First Lady, Olena Zelenska, spoke in Parliament about the atrocities of the Russian invasion and why the West must not give up on her country. She compared the bombing of Ukraine by the Russian aggressor to the bombing of Great Britain by the Nazis during World War II. “You didn’t give up” she said, “We will not give up.”

“But”, she continued, “We need more than just victory. We need justice.”

During her speech, Olena Zelenska showed footage of Ukrainian cities during blackout following Russian shelling and photos of people forced to look for electricity and heat.

The First Lady called on the British government to lead a global effort to establish a Special Tribunal for the crime of Russian aggression against Ukraine. She told MPs that everywhere in the liberated cities and communities, thousands of war crimes have been documented. Torture chambers arranged by the occupiers had been found.

The First Lady focused on crimes of sexual violence in war. She told MPs they had evidence of numerous rapes of Ukrainians by Russian invaders. The youngest girl who was raped by the Russian occupiers was four years old. The oldest survivor was 85.

Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle told the First Lady to keep “shaking the world awake to the horrors Russia is committing.”

It is our duty to keep the spotlight on the plight of Ukrainian people. It is not a distant land. If Putin wins, other nations will be in his sights. The appetite of despots is never satiated.

We will not forget Ukraine’s tragedy.

I want to express my gratitude to the people across Bedfordshire who have done extraordinary acts of kindness to help Ukrainians in desperate need, including taking them into their homes. People in Bedford Borough alone have provided homes to over 300 Ukrainians.

Peace on our continent will prevail if we stick together and continue supporting Ukraine through these dark days and nights.

Emmaus Welcomes New Trustees

Sue Ryder, the palliative, neurological and bereavement support charity, is encouraging residents to keep spreading the festive cheer into the new year by signing up to have their Christmas trees collected and recycled to raise vital funds for families needing their care.

After the festivities are over, Sue Ryder volunteers will be collecting real Christmas trees direct from people’s front door or driveway so that they can be chipped into mulch and recycled.

For a donation, people who live in MK40, MK42, MK43, MK44 and MK45 postcodes can have their trees collected between Saturday 7th and Tuesday 10th January 2023. All money raised will help Sue Ryder to continue o ering its compassionate palliative care and bereavement support – helping its teams be there when it matters.

Emmaus Village Carlton have announced four new trustees who will play a vital role volunteering their time and working together to support and steer the direction of the charity.

Simon Botterill, a qualified accountant with over 40 years’ experience, joins the charity as Treasurer. He said: “I had visited Emmaus Village Carlton prior to my retirement and was impressed by the operation and the ethos of the community. So, after I retired, I o ered to help as a volunteer.”

Ian Henderson has over three decades of senior IT-management experience spanning financial services, local government, education, retail, logistics and distribution, insurance, housing, airports, NHS, charities and the hospitality industries.

The pandemic was a time of re-evaluation for Emily Willis, who decided to step away from her retail career. Emily said: “I feel really privileged to have been chosen to be part of an organisation that makes such a di erence

to people’s lives and the society we live in, with a strong purpose at its core and such a rich history.”

Finally, Dominique Cox worked for her local police service for 13 years and then in family litigation. While on maternity leave, she ran a project for disadvantaged local families and later moved into charity management. Emily said: “It’s all about the companions. If I can channel my enthusiasm and experience into improving their day-to-day experience of being part of Emmaus Village Carlton, then my role as Trustee will be a worthwhile one.”

Bedford Borough Council Publishes Budget Consultation

Bedford Borough Council is asking for your views on its Budget for 2023/24. The Council has a strong track record of financial management and provides numerous di erent services to our 185,300 residents: from waste and recycling collection, street cleaning and homelessness services, to business support, social care and community safety.

However, as in recent years, we know we will have to make some di cult decisions during the setting of the 2023-24 budget to ensure resources continue to be prioritised and money is directed to where it is needed most.

The council faces significant financial pressures across the medium term, largely due to inflation pushing up the cost of delivering services, but also due to increasing demand for services and reduced funding in real terms from central government.

To manage these pressures, the Council will be continuing the approach within its Transformation Programme; making use of new technology and improving how they operate; and procuring goods and services more e ciently

This Budget also outlines areas of longer-term ‘capital’ spending investing in the future for the Borough

This includes:

• New schools and classrooms to meet the needs of a growing population.

• Investment in maintaining and improving our roads and pavements, including resurfacing of the Paula Radcli e Way (A6)

• Improvements to our buildings to make them more energy e cient and tackle climate change.

• Purchasing council owned housing to provide emergency accommodation for the homeless that will save money on leasing accommodation.

• A new Railway Station serving Wixams

• Investing in pedestrian and cycling improvements, Midland Road, St Paul’s Square and Greyfriars junction as part of the Town Deal.

• Completion of Riverside enhancements opening up the Great Ouse urban area for all.

Cllr Michael Headley, Portfolio Holder for Finance said, “Every year we work hard to proactively

ensure we use the money and resources available to provide the high-quality services our residents and businesses need.

“We understand that everyone in Bedford Borough is currently dealing with a very concerning rise in the cost of living. The council is continuing to support residents through these di cult times, including help with meal costs during holidays times for families eligible for income related free school meals. There is support with energy e ciency measures and extra support from the CAB for those facing escalating financial problems.

“But the deep-felt impacts of rising inflation, following so swiftly o the back of the pandemic impact, is also presenting Bedford Borough Council with significant financial challenges. It remains a challenging time as we continue to face uncertain financial pressures.

“We have also identified several priority areas for investment that includes addressing climate change, improving our local environment, and continuing to reinvigorate our town centre following the impact of the pandemic restrictions.

“We want to hear from you- what do you think about how we are developing the way we work, and our plans for investment into the future?”

The findings from our consultation will be given to the Mayor and councillors as part of the evidence they will use to help them come to a decision about the budget proposals.

You can find out more and have your say at www.bedford.gov.uk/budget2023

You can respond via that website, or by emailing consultingbedford@bedford.gov.uk or by writing to Consulting Bedford, Borough Hall, Cauldwell Street, Bedford MK42 9AP. Hard copies are available in libraries and on request.

BEDFORD BOROUGH WARM SPACES NETWORK

The rise in the cost of living and increased energy bills means that many households will struggle with their heating bills this winter. People will be faced with tough decisions about when they can afford to heat their home.

To help residents, Bedford Borough Council is working with local partners to develop a Warm Spaces network. Warm Spaces will offer free, non-judgemental spaces where people can go to stay warm and maybe enjoy some company and a hot drink, or simply spend time reading a magazine or book. NEW YEAR, NEW BOOK!

This month, four books that will lead you into 2023.

A Nation of Shopkeepers: The Unstoppable rise of the PetiteBourgeoisie

Lifting the lid on the UK’s modern class structure, Daniel Evans’ forthcoming book, A Nation of Shopkeepers: The Unstoppable Rise of the Petite-Bourgeoisie, focuses on the class of people existing between the working class and the bourgeoisie – those shopkeepers, smalltime landlords and self-employed artisans who were expected to be swallowed up by monopoly capitalism, but who’ve actually grown in recent years.

Referring to them as a “mysterious class”, he investigates what their seemingly unstoppable rise might mean for the Left..

You Are Not Alone

Cariad Lloyd losing her father at 15 inspired her award-winning podcast, Griefcast, in which she talks to celebrities about navigating their own experiences of loss.

In You Are Not Alone, the comedian and writer explores society’s reluctance to talk about death and its impact. Amid stories from those she’s interviewed, including Stephen Mangan, Sara Pascoe, and Adam Buxton, are Lloyd’s own thoughts on therapy and friends as, amongst other things, she debunks ‘the five stages of grief’ in appraising loss and heartache in all its unexpected forms.

8 Rules of Love

Jay Shetty, author of the no.1 New York Times bestseller Think Like a Monk, offers a revelatory guide to every stage of romance, drawing on ancient wisdom and new science.

Instead of presenting love as an ethereal concept or a collection of cliches, Shetty lays out specific, actionable steps to help you develop the skills to practise and nurture love better than ever before.

He shares eight rules, each teaching and empowering, detailing how to win or lose together, how to define love, and why you don’t ‘break’ in a break-up, and more.

Look Both Ways

by Linwood Barclay

Linwood Barclay introduces us to Sandra Montrose, who hasn’t been the same since her husband died after he fell asleep at the wheel of his car, leaving her a single mother to Archie and Katie.

When, in an experiment, the cars on Garrett Island are switched for driverless vehicles called Arrivals. Sandra is hesitant. Sure enough, as the day of the big reveal gets underway, a member of the press has gone missing and there are rumours of industrial sabotage.

Shortly afterwards, the sleek driverless cars stop taking orders. In fact, they have rules of their own and start targeting the trusting residents of Garrett Island.

THE RED LION, STEVINGTON

Nestled in North Bedfordshire is the quaint village of Stevington, and standing proudly at its centre is the beautiful Red Lion pub. The pub was returned to its former glory recently when it underwent extensive renovations and now offers a cosy and incredibly stylish dining room, with boutique hotel rooms to boot.

The restaurant is small but perfectly formed, with an open fire for cold winter days. The seasonal menus o ers contemporary British dining, and focuses on local produce.

To start, the camembert with maple and thyme went down a treat. The main courses were perfectly cooked, I particularly loved the Gressingham duck breast with fondant potato and a rich port sauce. Desserts are elevated classics, I can never say no to a crumble and it did not disappoint!

If you wanted to make a night of it, the pub has a range of luxurious boutique rooms. The interiors throughout are vibrant and welcoming, with each room having its own unique style. Plus, weekend stays include a top notch cooked breakfast.

Get cosy by the fire and enjoy some of Bedfordshire’s finest pub dining, I’m certain there’ll always be a warm welcome waiting for you at the Red Lion.

FRANCIS OF DELIRIUM + SLOE NOON – Thur 26th Jan – Esquires

are convinced 2023 will be a massive year for Francis of Delirium. To quote one of their most memorable songs, ‘Quit F*cking Around’ and come and see them before they inevitably blow up…

Tickets £8 in advance from all the usual places.

The project Francis of Delirium was created by 19-year-old Jana Bahrich (Vancouver) who invited drummer/producer, Chris Hewett (Seattle) to form an indie rock band who would be based in Luxembourg! With a sound that mixes nineties grunge and shoegaze, Francis of Delirium have to date released 2 EPs to widespread and worldwide acclaim.

‘…the blueprint of something grand’ – Pitchfork ‘One of the best new bands of 2021’ – Stereogum ‘They meld genres spanning generations with ease’ – The Line of Best Fit

Most recent release ‘All Love’ was mixed by Jolyon Thomas (Royal Blood, Slaves) and mastered by Joe Lambert (Sharon Van Etten, The National) and Jana’s impassioned vocals and guitar chops has seen the band compared to Courtney Barnett and The Smashing Pumpkins.

HUEY MORGAN’S NYC BLOCK PARTY – Sat 28th Jan – Esquires DJ, raconteur, author, producer, broadcaster and fun lovin’ criminal, Huey Morgan – a modern day rock’n’roll Renaissance man – is many things to many people.

As the whiskey soaked Lower East Side voice of 6 Music and Radio 2, he’s the man who joins the dots between funk, soul, disco, classic hip hop and rock’n’roll. As a broadcaster, he’s the man who tells laugh-out-loud stories and talks to the listener as if pulled up on a bar stool next to them. And as a musician, he’s the frontman of legendary 90s outfit Fun Lovin’ Criminals, a funk-fried indie outfit that broke big worldwide selling over 10 million records, recently celebrating their 20th anniversary.

Now after countless DJ gigs across the globe, he’s focused his DJ talent on his NYC Block Party:

INDEPENDENT VENUE WEEK –4 gigs @ Esquires

6 Music as o cial broadcast partner, IVW is also championed by a di erent Ambassador every year, which have included Colin Greenwood (Radiohead), Arlo Parks, Anna Calvi, Adrian Utley (Portishead), Nadine Shah, Wolf Alice, Wet Leg and many more.

This year Esquires has 4 brilliant shows starting on Wednesday the 1st of February when Welsh indie rockers Trampolene visit supported by hotly tipped Lincoln gang The Rills. This gig is for those who love Arctic Monkeys and The Libertines. Sprints then arrive on the 2nd, everything that goes into the band’s cathartic punk battle-cries can be seen as something of a call-to-arms: an attempt to silence the internal doubting voices and to fight against the outdated social tropes that box in individuality. Punk legends Anti Nowhere League headline the Friday (3rd) then its over to the high energy grungey rock of Sick Joy on the 4th Feb.

Independent Venue Week (IVW) is the UK’s annual 7-day celebration of independent music & arts venues and the people that own, run and work in them. During the week, independent venues come together with artists, promoters, agents, record labels and media to create a unique series of special live events across the U.K. to highlight on the work these venues do year-round. By doing so, local communities come together and celebrate these special places with thousands of artists playing hundreds of shows in villages, towns and cities all around the UK. The RSPB shares top birds to spot for annual BIG GARDEN BIRDWATCH EVENT

• Discover which birds to look out for in your Bedfordshire garden or green space during Big Garden Birdwatch 2023

• World’s largest garden wildlife survey returns, 27-29 January 2023

• Birds provide an important connection to nature and bring joy and comfort as well as being vital for our mental health and wellbeing

This winter, the RSPB are sharing their top tips for identifying the birds that may visit your Bedfordshire garden as their popular Big Garden Birdwatch is set to return for its 44th year.

Hundreds of thousands of people across the UK will celebrate their love of nature and unite to watch and count the nation’s garden birds in January for the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch weekend. This year’s event takes place on 27, 28 and 29 January 2023. Members of the public are asked to

spend just one hour watching and recording the birds seen from their garden, balcony or window, then send their results to the RSPB. Taking part in the survey helps the RSPB in monitoring how the UK’s garden birds are faring. Close to half a million people join in the Birdwatch every year.

Here are five bird species to look out for in your Bedfordshire garden, balcony or local greenspace:

2. BLUE TITS:

Streaked with a colourful mix of blue, yellow, white and green plumage, blue tits are one of our most attractive garden visitors. This species feeds on a diet of insects, caterpillars, seeds and nuts. They will happily take all kinds of bird food too, so keep an eye on your bird feeders for this vibrant garden bird.

4. LONG TAILED TITS:

Often arriving at your feeders in large groups, long tailed tits are sociable birds with extended tails which have earnt them their name. With grey and pinkish feathers, these birds are particularly flu y at this time of year too. Primarily feeding on insects, autumn and winter sees them feed on seeds as well, which could bring them to your garden bird feeders, so keep your eyes peeled for a small flock of this species.

1. HOUSE SPARROWS:

The house sparrow is one of Britain’s most well-known and best-loved birds. Males and females are easily distinguished as males have a grey head and black bib whilst females are pale brown with a pale stripe behind the eye. House sparrows are noisy and gregarious, often sticking together in small flocks, and they’ll repeatedly congregate in big hedges where they can all hide together. They socialise by taking dust or water baths, as well as “social singing” where they call together in bushes.

3. ROBINS:

Singing nearly all through the year, the nation’s favourite bird is often one of the first to start in the morning and found to be one of the last singing at night – sometimes near a street light too. With its red chest that earns it the name “robin redbreast”, look out for this garden favourite darting through shrubs or perching on tree branches this winter.

5. GOLDFINCHES:

A much-loved little bird, the goldfinch announces its arrival with a tinkling, trilling call. Vibrantly coloured, goldfinches have red faces, black crowns and bold yellow wing patches. If you’re lucky, you may even be visited by a small flock of them, appropriately known as a “charm”.

To help you tell a house sparrow from a goldfinch check out the RSPB’s bird identification guide. To take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch 2023 and help nature in the process, simply spend an hour watching the birds in your garden or local green space, and record what you’ve seen. Whether you see lots of birds or none at all, every recording is useful information.

Top 6 Cars that changed the world

For the past century, legendary marques like Ferrari, Porsche, and Aston Martin have acquired mythological status in world culture - engineering marvels that feed our instincts as road warriors and fire our desire to defy the forces of conformity.

1. FERRARI - The Superamerica Series

Ferrari can rightfully be said to have changed the way we perceive the automobile, with the Superamerica series – in which cars were equipped with the V-12 engine developed for its Grand Prix racing cars of the 50s – renowned as the world’s outstanding sports cars.

2. PORSCHE 911

Right up to the new 2008 Porsche GT2, the 911 design has remained spectacularly intact and thus commands our attention as one of the truly iconic automotive designs.

3. ASTON MARTIN DB5

The 1965 Aston Martin DB5 gained instant immortality with none other than Sean Connery’s James Bond at the wheel of the newly launched DB5 in Goldfinger. Only 1,023 examples of this superb 6-cylinder 280 PS model were ever built.

4. THE VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE

The Volkswagen Beetle acquired a mytho-poetic status in the 1960s. It was the car driven by flower children, a symbol of cultural revolt and the ‘small is beautiful’ ethos outlined by E.F. Schumacher.

5. JAGUAR XKE (E-TYPE)

The ‘E-Type’ is the car that not only helped rescue the British motor industry in the 1960s, it also set a new standard for the low-slung, front-engine sports car.

6. TESLA MODEL 3

Truly the most futuristic of all vehicles, the potential of Elon Musk’s electric vehicle and the Tesla brand is the parallel of Henry Ford, over a hundred years on.

Acorn House was the first Veterinary Hospital in Bedford To be awarded hospital status, a veterinary practice must: • Pass regular rigorous inspections by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons • Ensure that nursing staff are on site 24 hours a day • Ensure that veterinary surgeons are available 24 hours a day • Provide specialist equipment for diagnosis and treatment • Employ veterinary surgeons with advanced qualifications and experience The highest accreditation a veterinary practice can be awarded is Veterinary Hospital status Online appointment booking now available

WHO OWNS Acorn House Veterinary Hospital?

Acorn House Veterinary Hospital has been at its present site in Brickhill for 24 years, and was located on D’Parys Avenue in Bedford for many years prior to that. Initially a mixed farm and small animal practice, the hospital has focused on small animals since 2017.

In 2018 Acorn House Veterinary Hospital was acquired by the Royal Veterinary College (RVC). The RVC is ranked as the top veterinary school in the world (QS World University Rankings) and offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in veterinary medicine, veterinary nursing and biological sciences. Although Acorn House continues to operate as an independent practice, veterinary students from the RVC observe how the practice works by attending placements at the practice. The RVC felt that Acorn House had the right facilities, experience and ethos to take on this flagship role for their students.

What is the benefit for Acorn House and its clients?

Acorn House staff have access to the specialist vet services, knowledge, research and training available at the RVC so they can work to a high standard and develop further experience and qualifications in the areas that interest them.

Because Acorn House is owned by a prestigious educational establishment, clients can be reassured that veterinary knowledge and best practice are the top priority for the team treating their pets. For tricky cases, advice can be sought from specialists

at the RVC and patients requiring advanced inpatient care can be referred to the RVC Queen Mother Hospital.

Who runs Acorn House?

The Practice Principal of Acorn House is Katharine Nelson, who has been a veterinary surgeon at the practice since 2003 and is recognised by the RCVS as an Advanced Veterinary Practitioner in both Small Animal Surgery and Companion Animal Behaviour. The Deputy Principal is Gaynor Dudley, who was previously one of the practice partners and is responsible for the non-clinical parts of the business. They are supported by Vice Principal Rosie Theakston (who has worked as a veterinary surgeon at Acorn House for 24 years and holds a PgCert in Veterinary Education), Head Nurse Kerry Skinner (who holds a Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing and a certificate in Emergency and Critical Care and joined Acorn House in 2001) and Paul Harris-McCulloch, the Practice Manager (Paul holds a Certificate in Education and a Higher National Certificate in Business and began his veterinary career at Acorn House in 1998).

Woodgreen rehomes thousands of pets every year. With more and more being handed in due to the cost of living crisis, the charity is appealing for local volunteers who can offer their hearts and homes to a temporary furry friend.

Fostering is a hugely rewarding way to help pets in need – meaning you can enjoy their company without the long-term commitment and without the price tag. It doesn’t cost you a penny! When you become a volunteer foster carer, Woodgreen will provide everything you need and cover all expenses, as well as providing you with full training and roundthe-clock support. You’ll make friends with the volunteers that are already enjoying fostering too.

You can apply to foster dogs, cats and/or small pets (like rabbits and guinea pigs), and take care of them until they find a loving new home. This could take weeks or months, but Woodgreen are flexible

around holidays and any commitments you have. Some pets might be recovering from operations, be pregnant or too young to rehome, need further training and support, or just feel happier in a home environment. By opening your door to a homeless pet, it will make space for Woodgreen to help another pet who needs them.

The pets looking for fosterers are best suited to homes without any other animals or small children, but anyone can volunteer – whether you’re an experienced pet owner or you’ve never had a pet. All Woodgreen asks is that you’re aged over 18, you live within 40 minutes of the charity’s centre in Cambridgeshire, and you have the time and love to give to pets like Midge and Freddie (above). To find out more and to apply, please visit woodgreen.org.uk/foster

THE POTTING SHED OF THE GENTLEMAN GARDENER

Hello everyone

I hope you had the Christmas you wanted. Come into the potting shed and get warm; you’re very welcome. I’ve still got some mince pies somewhere, and there’s plenty of hot co ee in my flask.

Well, December saw the first serious frosts and the shortest day on the 21st. Spring is just around the corner, so bring some colour back to the garden by planting fragrant, flowering shrubs such as witch-hazel and bright winter-flowering pansies. Not wanting to wish time away, but something to set your sights on is the clocks going forward on Sunday 26th March.

The wise gardener is always looking ahead, and it’s always best to start as you mean to go on. Why not make it a new year resolution? Forward thinking certainly makes gardening easier and can bring better results. You never keep the resolution about losing weight anyway.

If your lawn was not top dressed last autumn, weather permitting, you should do it now. Sweep it first with a besom to scatter worm casts, leaves, and dead grass. Here’s your first gardening lesson of the year: if you don’t know what a besom is, research it, and I’ll check it with you next month.

Now’s the time for prep work on your vegetable garden. Heavy clay soil, dug over this time of year, benefits from the frost and rain, which helps to break down any large clogs and makes it easier to get a fine tilth when spring arrives.

I hope, like me, you’re looking forward to the growing season in your garden. I find no two seasons are ever the same.

I wish you the very best in your garden this year. Let’s make it the most successful one ever.

My kindest regards The Gentleman Gardener
