Her Majesty The Queen 1926 – 2022

Like the whole of the UK and many people around the world, the BedsLife team were extremely saddened by the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 8th September. For all of us here she was a constant and steadfast presence in our lives, and the one person we could rely on to hold true to her values as the world around us underwent epoch-defining changes.

Although she lived to a remarkably great age of 96, she had understandably become a more private person after the death of her husband Prince Philip in 2021. Nevertheless, she was still there at the most important moments, despite her increasing mobility problems, and who can forget the wonderful four-day celebration of her Platinum Jubilee earlier this year in June?

The Queen notched up some remarkable achievements during her 70-year reign. In pure numbers alone they would have required immense stamina, focus and fortitude. Since 1952 she travelled to more than 100 countries and made more than 150 visits to Commonwealth countries including 82 state visits. She worked with all 15 UK Prime Ministers, met 13 US Presidents and 7 Popes. She attended 21,000 public engagements, including 39 Royal Variety Performances, posed for 1,000 official photographic and painted portraits, sent 300,000 birthday messages to centenarians, vetted over 1,000 new laws, and owned 30 corgis.

Those closest to her often talked about her wicked sense of humour, which became apparent to the rest of us during some big national moments. The 2012 Olympics opening ceremony featured a skit in which she accompanied Daniel Craig as James Bond from the palace to the Olympic Stadium; her own idea, which she had kept secret from the rest of her family. This year, her Platinum Jubilee celebrations included her playing herself in a short video with a CGI version of Paddington Bear, bonding over a shared love of marmalade sandwiches – finally revealing the secret of what she’d been keeping in her handbag for all those years!

And let us not forget she was also a mother and grandmother, a matriarch as well as a monarch. She was married to Prince Philip for 73 years, had four children, eight grandchildren and 12 greatgrandchildren. For them as well as us, she was a symbol of stability, resilience, and wisdom. During times of national strife, she provided comfort and reassurance. It’s difficult to summarise her legacy in just a few words, other than to say that we’re grateful for her grace, humour, and tireless support in helping Britain navigate its way through the 20th century and onto the 21st. She was an extraordinary figure, and we feel proud and very, very lucky to have had her in our lives for as long as we did.

Rest in Peace, Your Majesty.

As I address the nation, From here, beyond the sky, I know you cannot hear me, I’m here, I see you cry.

But do not weep my children, Be brave and dry those tears, Now it is my time to rest, Having reigned for 70 years.

My duties are complete now, I’ve seen my final dawn, My family surrounds me, My country starts to mourn.

And now join my Phillip, Together hand in hand, A picnic in the clouds, As leave behind this land.

Farewell my dearest people, I leave with no regret, Thank you, for everything, Your Queen, your Lilibet.

(Haydee Waldron Jones08/09/22)

Phillip came to me today, and said it was time to go. I looked at him and smiled, as i whispered that “I know”

I then turned and looked behind me, and seen I was asleep. All my Family were around me, and I could hear them weep.

I gently touched each shoulder, with Phillip by my side. Then I turned away and walked, with My Angel guide.

Phillip held my hand, as he lead the way, to a world where King’s and Queens, are Monarch’s every day.

I was given a crown to wear or a Halo known by some. The difference is up here, they are worn by everyone.

I felt a sense of peace, my reign had seen its end. 70 years I had served my Country, as the peoples friend.

Thank you for the years, for all your time and love. Now I am one of two again, in our Palace up above.

WORDS FROM

Richard Fuller, MP for North East Bedfordshire

One of the most significant issues facing our country is the rising cost of energy caused by President Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. As the brave people of Ukraine fight daily to remove the aggressor from their land, we in the rest of Europe are having to shoulder costs to our economy.

Liz Truss, the new Prime Minister, has set out decisive action to support households and businesses with these immediate financial pressures. She has also rightly announced policies to tackle the root causes in the UK energy market and to strengthen our long term self-sufficiency in energy supplies. A new Energy Price Guarantee will take effect from October. This will give people certainty on the maximum level of their energy bills. The Guarantee takes account of temporarily removing green levies, worth around £150, from household bills and will supersede the existing energy price cap.

From 1st October, a typical household will pay no more than £2,500 per year for each of the next two years, while the government gets the energy market back on track. This will save a typical household £1,000 a year and comes in addition to the £400 energy bills discount for all households.

There has been further support for those on means tested benefits, for pensioners who receive the winter fuel payment and for those on disability benefits. Importantly for many in Bedfordshire, those households who do not pay direct for mains gas and electricity – such as those living in park homes or those in rural areas who use heating oil – will receive equivalent support through a new fund.

Business owners, charities and public sector organisations, such as schools, will be eligible for a new six-month scheme that will offer equivalent support as is being provided for consumers. After this initial six-month scheme, the Government will provide ongoing, focused support for those sectors of the economy most vulnerable to energy price rises. There will be a review in 3 months’ time to consider where this should be targeted to make sure those most in need are getting the appropriate level of support.

The Government is also taking action to accelerate domestic energy supply, increase our energy resilience and achieve our ambition to make the UK an energy exporter by 2040. Actions include undertaking fundamental reforms to the structure and regulation of the energy market through recommendations from a new review of the UK Energy Regulation, launching a new oil and gas licensing round and launching a review to ensure we are meeting our Net Zero 2050 target in an economically-efficient way.

The recent surge in energy prices has been a source of enormous concern for households and businesses across the country and these steps will provide reassurance to all those who were fearing the bleakest of winters. By taking these strong and decisive measures in her first days as Prime Minister, Liz Truss has demonstrated the decisiveness to address the most-pressing issues facing us all. By laying out plans to address the country’s long term energy security, the Prime Minister is setting us on a path for steadier and more sustainable energy prices for the years ahead.

This is my first article since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and the accession to the throne of King Charles III. I am sure I join all of you in sending our warmest best wishes to our King as he takes on his duties as sovereign.

Mohammad Yasin, MP for Bedford and Kempston WORDS FROM

Watching her family rushing to the bedside of the gravely ill Queen will have brought back traumatic memories for many of us who have received the heart stopping call with news of the imminent death of a loved one.

For as we remember the 70 years of dedicated and loyal service from the Queen, we first pay our respects to a grieving family, who have lost a mother, a grandmother, a great grandmother and a friend, who was very special.

And so has our country.

This is a profoundly sad moment for the UK, the Commonwealth and the world.

Queen Elizabeth is an icon throughout the world who makes our nation proud.

She earned our respect and embodied all that is good about public service, duty, fortitude and diligence.

Her reassuring presence, her dignity and constancy, especially in times of discord, bound us in a way we may only be about to understand.

She has been a role-model throughout the ages. I pay tribute to her remarkable life’s work - the legacy she leaves and the lives she has touched will echo through the ages.

It was a delight to see our community come together to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The outpouring of love was heartfelt and enduring.

The days and months ahead will be difficult.

May we come together in peace, kindness and respect as we remember our Queen and prepare for the next chapter in our nation’s history.

On behalf of the people of Bedford and Kempston, Thank you Ma’am.

And long live the King.

In this special edition, I’d like to share with you the tribute I made in Parliament to our late Queen Elizabeth II on behalf of people in Bedford and Kempston…

The museum is a memorial dedicated to the personnel of the 306th Bomb Group who operated from Thurleigh during World War 2 as part of the Eighth Air Force 40th Combat Wing, 1st Air Division and is open throughout the summer on FindSundays.outmore about the museum at www.306bg.co.uk

He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert – a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers.

typically more expensive, so that leads us to a potential conflict of choice – do we look after our planet, or do we prioritise the money in our pockets?

The answer – from research I have been doing on part of my website, and a collection of other polls that pool data on this subject – is very much that green issues take a massive backseat when our backs are against the wall.

to play by the rules with clear billing and fair price schemes; we expect home insulation initiatives to really add up in the short-term, not 25 years down the line; and we expect new customer incentives to be accompanied by rewards for existing ones.

In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at whether it’s possible to still be green at times of real economic restraint.

None of us need reminding how tough this year has been, and while we’re all looking for the green shoots of recovery, that greenness has become another sticking point of late, with environmental campaigners looking to keep their own eco priorities live and real.

As consumers, we’re all pretty aware that products and services that are more organic, or better ethically sourced, or that contain a strong environmental edge, are

Now that’s not to say I don’t have a green conscience, or the average Joe in the street doesn’t work hard to preserve the planet, but the absolute truth is that in the vast, vast majority of cases – both at times of struggle and even when things are less chaotic – individuals are not willing to make big sacrifices.

What I think is important though is that, in future, it would be nice if people are being incentivised to go green, and doing so means we are given all the support we expect from government. We expect tax cuts on fuel and a decrease in oil price to be reflected at the pump; we expect utility providers

What’s more, the days of us feeling guilt-tripped into buying a green product over one that isn’t, are probably and hopefully over. Of course, we all want to get back to a place of economic and environmental prosperity, and I’m sure that will come, but our conscience to feed our families has been proven, time and again, to be stronger than anything else.

GEORGECHICKENJNR

Earlier this year Chicken George Jnr announced they would be opening their 3rd restaurant in Bedford. After much excitement and anticipation, they opened their doors in August and have quickly become one of the most popular restaurants in town.

Chicken George Jnr is a Bedfordshire born business with the original shop in Luton. If you know much about chicken wings in the UK, then you’ve probably heard about these award winning wings and they definitely live up to the Thehype!team

have completely transformed the old Tavistock pub in to a fully kitted out sports bar. The atmosphere is always buzzing with good music and friendly service. There is a great choice of drinks from the bar including a full range of cocktails.

The food menu is the most exciting part, with the flavoured fried wings being the main event. They also o er classic fried chicken with meal deals and some outrageously good burgers and sides. My favourite wings were the Mango Rubicon or the Thai Me up with lemongrass and coriander mayo, with a side of garlic Parmesan fries.

A very exciting addition to the Bedford food scene, make sure to check it out!

THE SKIDS

Sun 9th October

The Saints Are Coming! The Skids are back in Bedford again following their packed show at the Bedford Corn Exchange in 2018, this time in the more intimate surroundings of Bedford Esquires. The Skids formed in 1977 in their hometown of Dunfermline, Scotland by Richard Jobson, Stuart Adamson, Bill Simpson & Tom Kellichan. After releasing an independent single the band were played by John Peel, supported The Clash in concert and then were signed to Virgin Records in 1978. Their first singles were “Sweet Surburbia”, “The Saints are Coming” and “Into the Valley” –the latter reaching the UK Top Ten in early 1979. Another coup for Bedford.

GEMMA ROGERS + ANNIE & GEARY

Variously compared to Kirsty MacColl, Ian Dury, Lily Allen and more, the London post-punk indie artist’s debut LP is a packed with own authentic style of witty, talky, mischievous lyrics and catchy melodies from the perky to wistfully emotional. Much beloved on BBC 6 music, this will be Gemma’s first visit to Esquires. Annie and Geary are an up-and-coming vintage inspired young music duo performing an eclectic mix of jazz, folk, and Americana in their signature acoustic style. They develop pieces from the Great American Songbook with thrilling new arrangements for a solo guitar and vocalist, as well as classic folk songs with vocal harmonies alongside their own original compositions.

Anouska Sokolow, bassist Tim Curtis, and Yuri Shibuichi on drums – may lack the bombast of previous landmark signings to Dan Carey‘s tastemaking Speedy Wunderground label, but listen closer to their debut and this group reveal themselves an outfit of surprising depth. Picked up by Carey after a short Windmill residency, Honeyglaze deal in a dour, baroque indie-pop that’s close in spirit to The Orielles or Cate Le Bon, and rendered chilly and strange by Sokolow’s excellent, stately English folk dourness.

Bedford Town’s journey in the FA Cup this season started at their close neighbours Kempston Rovers. The teams were rivals last season until the Eagles won promotion, while Rovers fought relegation.

test would present itself in the next round as Gary Setchell’s men faced a trip to his old club King’s Lynn who topped the table in the National League North.

Setchell has strengthened the team in recent weeks including the signing of ex Premiership player George Thorne who plied his trade for West Bromwich Albion early in his career before later moving to Derby County. He retired from professional football in August 2022, before joining the Eagles on a one-year contract in September.

Also in is Sam Dreyer, the 19yo former Stevenage player who has Southern League experience playing for Kings Langeley, Hendon and Biggleswade FC.

The third signing in this spell is Dan Jarvis who signed for a month’s loan from Peterborough Sports, the midfielder is equally at home at right back.

VETERINARY

How to prepare your pet for VISITS

Pets can find a trip to the veterinary surgery stressful. The veterinary nurses and surgeons try very hard to make vet visits as pleasant for pets as possible but there is a lot that pet owners can do to help too.

Travel calmly to the practice

Sometimes the journey to the vets can be worse than the veterinary exam itself. Make sure that dogs are used to travelling in the car for other reasons so that getting in the car doesn’t always mean a vet trip! Many dogs will prefer to travel in the back seat with a member of the family, rather than in the boot which can be more likely to cause travel sickness.

Cat carriers should be enclosed to make cats feel safe (cover wire baskets with a blanket for the same effect) and should be available to cats within the home on a daily basis so that again, the appearance of the basket from the attic or the garage does not cause panic for your feline friend!

Provide tasty treats

The veterinary staff will have treats on hand at the practice. But if your pet likes something in

particular; or has allergies that mean only certain treats are suitable, bring some with you and hand them to the vet or nurse at the start of the appointment.

Practice makes perfect

Practice handling your dog or cat’s feet, mouth and ears at home, with food rewards for good behaviour. It is also a great idea to get your pet used to coming to the clinic regularly – bring them with you when you come to collect flea or worm medication, or when you are attending with another pet, so that they realise that it is possible to visit the vets, be given a biscuit by the receptionist and go home again without anything stressful happening at all!

Consider medication

Pets that find travel and vet visits very stressful may benefit from anti-anxiety medicine given an hour or so before the visit, just as some people benefit from this approach when visiting the dentist. Your veterinary surgeon will be able to advise further.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

Atrip to the garden centre can sometimes be a confusing and bewildering experience. Everything on display, feasibly, has a purpose, and a good one at that – but at risk of blowing your entire budget on the latest equipment that promises to energise the flora and fauna of your outside space, here are our top eight tools that every garden must have.

LawnmowerONE

It’s amazing how a simple mow of the lawn can transform it from a rough and rugged outside vista into a stylish statement of beautifully bladed finesse.

Yet while the best machines on the market will wow you not just with their mowing magnificence but a price-tag to match also, there are some basic models that will set you back less than £50.

PruningTWO shears

So much to do with gardening involves keeping nature at bay, so getting a decent pair of pruning shears is essential.

Whether trimming back rose stems or dealing with an unruly

bush, regular pruning will maximise light, enabling all areas of your garden to flourish.

ATHREEsoilknife

A soil knife (or hori-hori) is a Japanese tool with a blade on one side and a serrated edge on the other.

It will cut through roots deep in the soil, so weeding and plant removal from deep in the ground is quick and easy… and dare we say it, rather satisfying!

WeederFOUR

A weeder is brilliant for removing plant matter caught between paving slabs, along edges and in small ruts, meaning that the days of backbreaking yanking of weeds are over.

RakeFIVE

Leaf debris can make even the healthiest of gardens appear unkempt, but your friendly rake will sweep aside any dead matter to give the lawn a smooth finish. And, of course, you can also use it on soil.

ShovelSIX and trowel

There’s nothing quite like digging a hole when wanting to feel connected to nature; and providing your back can deal with the impact of hammering a metal blade into soil that, inevitably, will have lumps of rock in it, shovel away to your heart’s content.

For smaller areas, and when tending to garden beds, a trowel is a must-have.

KneelingSEVEN pad

For little more than a fiver you can save your knees from impending, aching doom with a soft kneeling pad.

AEIGHThose

Finally, you’ll need your garden’s life source, water, available on tap, literally. Hence, a good hose for watering is essential, and certainly saves you lugging a watering can up and down the garden!

THE POTTING SHED OF THE GENTLEMAN GARDENER

Hello everyone, you’re all very welcome back to my potting shed.

Where’s the year gone? Autumn o cially began on Friday 23rd of last month and already the nights are starting to creep in, with the clocks going back on Sunday 30th October.

Gardening is all about thinking ahead and doing everything in a timely manner. Perhaps, for next season, you might try your hand at something new to you? This year, I really enjoyed learning all about figs, olives and eucalyptus.

This month, finish planting your spring bulbs such as narcissus and crocus. Tulips can wait until November. Choose plump, firm bulbs and try to plant them, within a week of buying, in a location with good drainage.

Summer has just about gone, but your planters and baskets can still bring you pleasure. Just repot them with dwarf conifers, heathers, polyanthus or winter pansies.

If you have a pond, cover or net it now, before the autumn leaves start to fall (I nearly broke into song Keepthen).

gathering apples and pears as varieties become ready for picking at di erent times. Handle all fruit with care and only store really sound fruit.

When planting bedding for spring, please exercise great care preserving as many roots as possible. Take your time.

Your garden is a silent, loyal friend and a great listener. Please enjoy your gardens; it’s better than therapy, and you get tomatoes.

My kindest regards The Gentleman Gardener
