Pick Researchers Use AI To Predict Challenging Behaviors Common in Profound Autism

U

sing artificial intelligence tools to analyze years of biomedical data, researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have discovered a possible connection between sleep, gastrointestinal health, and two potentially harmful behaviors often associated with profound autism: selfinjury and aggression.

illiam E. Pelham, Jr., Ph.D Ph.D.,., a child psychologist, ADDitude contributor, and proponent of behavioral therapy for children with ADHD, died on October 21, 2023. He was 75. Founding director of the Center for Children and Families at Florida International University (FIU) and distinguished professor of psychology, Pelham advocated that children with ADHD begin treatment with behavioral therapy and parental intervention techniques, adding low doses of stimulant medication if necessary.

Bill is credited with decelerating the role of medication-first treatment regimens in favor of more evidence-based treatment programs…. [he] transformed the lives of countless children, adolescents, and their families all across the world, including thousands in South Florida,” wrote Elizabeth Bèjar, FIU Provost, Executive Vice President, and COO in an email to the university.

Pelham began his nearly 50-year career as

a professor at Washington State University, training hundreds of scientists and clinicians working with children with ADHD. He also taught at Florida State University, the University of Pittsburgh, and the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Dr. Pelham was one of the original giants in the field of ADHD research.

The study not only connects sleep and gastrointestinal issues with future challenging behaviors, it also shows that these health issues experienced can help predict the next day’s behavior.

The researchers found that, for one in five adolescents in the 80-person study group, gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea and constipation predicted next-day challenging behaviors with more than 80% accuracy.

Poor sleep quality — difficulty falling asleep or waking up multiple times during the night — also influenced behavior.

“We were not surprised to see that GI and sleep problems had an effect, as these are common health problems in those with autism spectrum disorder.

However, finding such a strong connection between these issues and challenging behaviors is clinically significant and worth investigating further,” said Hahn, who is also a member of Rensselaer’s Shirley Ann Jackson, Ph.D. Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies.

AI Can Spot Autism Early and Accurately

A

new artificial intelligence (AI) system can diagnose children between the ages of 24 and 48 months with autism at a 98.5% accuracy rate, according to research being presented next week at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). The system analyzes specialized brain MRIs and produces a report detailing any affected neural pathways, the anticipated impact on brain functionality, and a severity grade that can be used to guide early therapeutic intervention.

The researchers said infants and young children with autism receive a delayed diagnosis for several reasons, including a lack of bandwidth at testing centers. Khudri said their AI system could facilitate precise autism management while reducing the time and costs associated with assessment and treatment.

Sure, I was able to outperform virtually anyone when it came to work. My attention to detail, my ability to focus for long periods, and my dedication were unmatched. But that never stopped me from being fired for “just not fitting in.” The concept of “fitting in” always eluded me, no matter how much effort I put in.

Now that I know I am not a certifiable nutcase, some relief washes over me. It isn’t all in my head; it’s just the way I am wired. But knowing this doesn’t change the world around me. The feeling of isolation still lingers, the constant reminder that I am different from the majority.

Growing up, I was always labeled as “weird” or “strange” by my peers.

I

was diagnosed as being neurodiverse yesterday, which puts me squarely on the Autism Spectrum. It was a revelation, a key to unlock the door that held the answers to so many questions I had about myself.

Now I understand why I have always felt like an outsider looking in. Growing up, I was always labeled as “weird” or “strange” by my peers. I couldn’t comprehend social cues and struggled to connect with others on a deeper level. Little did I know that it was all part of my neurodiversity.

Being diagnosed as high-functioning autistic explained the difficulties I have faced throughout my life. It shed light on why I always felt almost completely alone, even though I am a married man. It’s not that my wife doesn’t understand or support me; it’s just that the loneliness that comes with being different is something hard to shake off.

All I have ever wanted was to be accepted for who I am, to find a place where I truly belonged. It didn’t matter where I went or what I did; I never fit into any group or organization. No matter how hard I tried or what I did to just be accepted, I was always

But as I navigate my way through this realization, slowly embracing my neurodiversity, I find solace in knowing that I am not alone in my journey. There is a whole community of individuals like me, all with unique talents and perspectives. Together, we find support, understanding, and acceptance that is sometimes hard to find elsewhere.

And even though I may never truly fit into what society deems “normal,” I now have the courage to embrace my differences. I no longer feel the need to change who I am or mold myself into something I am not just to fit in. I have learned to value myself and my unique perspective. I may be different, but I am valuable in my own right.

So, while the road ahead may still be challenging, I now face it with newfound understanding and self-acceptance. Being neurodiverse isn’t a curse or a defect; it’s a beautiful expression of the diversity that exists within the human mind. And I am proud to be a part of that beautifully diverse tapestry.

tanley sat on a bench in the park, watching as the autumn leaves gently fell to the ground. He had always found solace in the serene beauty of nature, but lately, his anxiety had been overwhelming. As an autistic veteran, everyday tasks often felt like insurmountable obstacles. The simple act of grocery shopping or going to a crowded event became daunting challenges that left him mentally drained.

Stanley had heard that having a service animal could make a significant difference in the lives of people with disabilities. He wondered if having a furry, loyal companion by his side could help alleviate some of his struggles. With mounting excitement and a glimmer of hope in his eyes, he decided to embark on a journey to find his perfect service dog.

After months of research and numerous visits to various Helters and training centers, Stanley found Luna—a beautiful, gentle golden retriever. Luna had been trained specifically to assist individuals with autism, and her kind, understanding eyes seemed to convey a sense of understanding that melted Stanley’s heart.

However, amidst this concern, I’ve come to realize that my child’s deep fascination with specific topics, even onscreen, is an authentic expression of their individuality.

In our household, routine is a comforting anchor for my autistic child. The repetitive nature and predictability of YouTube videos, especially those focused on ABCs, offer a sense of stability. It’s like a security blanket, making these videos irresistibly appealing to my child and many others like them.

These videos, with their blend of visual and auditory stimuli, act as a sanctuary. For my child, who grapples with sensory sensitivities, this controlled and consistent input becomes a source of calmness and engagement.

I’ve come to appreciate that screen time can be more than just a source of entertainment.

Many YouTube channels weave educational content into their videos, transforming this seemingly passive activity into a potential learning adventure. We explore interactive and educational videos that align with my

Intense Interests Children on the autism spectrum often display intense and focused interests in specific topics or activities. This intensity may go beyond what is considered typical for their age. They may become deeply absorbed in a particular subject, hobby, or collection, sometimes to the exclusion of other activities.

Sensory Sensitivities Heightened or diminished sensitivities to sensory stimuli are common in individuals with autism. Some children may be sensitive to bright lights, loud sounds, certain textures, or strong smells, leading them to cover their ears or exhibit other reactions to sensory stimuli.

My 4 year son has started flapping his hands when he gets excited or upset, for about 6-7 minutes straight, he would bang his head on the floor anytime he got upset, but that just stopped out of nowhere one day. do you recommend i get him evaluated as well? if so, when?

Some people are more introverted and prefer a smaller circle of friends, while others are more extroverted and enjoy larger social groups. Emersen’s journey began with a dream. In her sleep, she saw a vision of a prophecy that foretold of a young girl and her dragon who would bring an end to King Simon’s reign of terror. This dream ignited a fire within Emersen’s heart, and she knew that she had a purpose to fulfill.

As she woke up from her dream, Emersen’s mind was filled with questions. Who was this evil king, and why had he taken her sister? What role did she and Leo play in the prophecy? With determination in her eyes, Emersen set out to uncover the truth and bring her sister back home.

Emersen’s first step was to learn more about King Simon.

She discovered that he had a reputation for ruling with an iron fist, oppressing the villagers and hoarding their resources for himself. His greed knew no bounds, and he would stop at nothing to maintain his power.

mersen was a young girl with a heart full of curiosity and a mind that worked in mysterious ways. She had a unique perspective on the world, for Emersen was autistic. Her vibrant imagination and keen attention to detail allowed her to see things that others often overlooked. While some people struggled to understand her, Emersen’s family embraced her for who she was and encouraged her to explore her passions.

With her bright blue eyes and a smile that could light up a room, Emersen had a contagious enthusiasm for life.

She had a deep love for animals and spent most of her time surrounded by her furry friends. But there was one companion who held a special place in her heart - Leo, her loyal pet dragon.

Leo was no ordinary dragon. He was small in size, with shimmering green scales and eyes that sparkled with
