GREAT SUMMER TRADITIONS ARE BACK “We’re excited to be getting back to some of the Bay Creek summer events that are so popular,” says Bobby. “For starters, we have begun our Friday afternoon gatherings at the Tree of Life and Saturday night movies outdoors at the Life Center.”

Friday Afternoons at The Tree of Life “The Tree of Life is one of those scenic, natural spots that Bay Creek is known for,” says Bobby. Picture yourself relaxing beneath the canopy of a beautiful, old oak tree on an island listening to live music and enjoying a very happy happy hour. This is the Tree of Life, situated on a little island at the beginning of the Preserve trail, which starts near Bay Creek’s Coach House Tavern. “The view is absolutely gorgeous,” Bobby explains, “and it’s just a great way to kick off the weekend with live music and good neighbors.”

Saturday Night Movies on the Lawn at the Life Center “This summer tradition is always a favorite,” says Bobby. “We’re inviting residents and guests to make their way down to the Life Center on Saturday evenings and join us for a great movie under the stars.” Bring a blanket or just relax on the soft grass and watch classic summer flicks with friends and family.

The Life Center is a key location for enjoyment, and in summer, it’s a cool, refreshing place to have a swim, take a yoga class or keep your fitness routine on track. Preserve Communities’ dedication to the renovation and refurbishment of the Life Center will further enhance the guest and resident experience. Lush landscaping, new furnishings, new class offerings and seasonal food and beverage service will make your Life Center visit even more invigorating.

The Beach There are many ways to enjoy summer on the Bay, but nothing says summer at Bay Creek like the beach. The private beaches here are a landmark in their own right. With calm, pristine waters lapping against soft sandy shores, it’s the ideal locale for kayaking, swimming, looking for beach glass, or building an epic sandcastle with the kids.

“Bay Creek’s beaches are a natural wonder,” says Bobby.

“Residents and guests spend a lot of time here and we want that time to be easy and worry-free.” Bobby continues, “We have food and beverage service slated for the beach this season, and we’ve now installed a new bathroom facility, too.” The facility is located at the entrance to the beach walk-through and is now open. “We hope this makes a beach day at Bay Creek that much easier for members and guests, especially those with children.”

On Course Thanks to a committed all-season maintenance and repair effort, Bay Creek’s acclaimed golf courses are in peak condition and ready for summer play. Head out for a day of amazingly scenic golf with friends. Pro tip: Focus on the game, but don’t forget to stop and take in your surroundings — Bay Creek is teeming with hundreds of birds, flowering plants and interesting wildlife, from box turtles to wild turkeys.

Muirfield Bluffs at Bay Creek: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Opportunity in a Once-in-a-Lifetime Community

It doesn’t take long to find out that Bay Creek Sales Assistant (and resident), Marianne Voltin is a people person. Her friendly demeanor and affinity for genuine conversation are evident immediately, as is her passion for Bay Creek. It’s what makes Marianne a natural fit for assisting Bay Creek Sales Executives.

Marianne and her husband, Randy, have owned a home in Bay Creek for seventeen years. They enjoyed their home in Marina Village as a second home getaway as they were raising their children.

Then, when Randy was transferred to the area for work, the home became their full-time residence, and they couldn’t be more pleased.

Marianne has had just over three months as Sales Assistant under the leadership of Director of Sales, Jack Madden—but a lifetime of experience has prepared her to excel in this role. Besides her knowledge and love of the community as a Bay Creek owner for nearly two decades, she is a certified hospitality trainer, has worked in corporate training and human resources, and holds undergraduate degrees in both Business and Psychology.

“My job is a great one. I get to talk with people who are interested in the community and help them learn more,” Marianne explains. “I answer their questions and help them plan a Discovery Visit so they can get to know Bay Creek and the town of Cape Charles.”

The Voltins, who will celebrate 40 years of marriage in September, have two children who live in Williamsburg with their spouses and children. “We have five grandchildren,” Marianne beams. “They’re only an hour and a half away which is just perfect.”

The Bay Creek team is dedicated to helping everyone make the most of this spectacular Eastern Shore community. Now, Preserve Communities along with leadership at the Club are unveiling a new way to share and explore Bay Creek.

Bay Creek and Preserve Communities is incredibly excited to announce the launch of a revolutionary member/guest experience: The Bay Creek mobile app.

Envisioned and spearheaded by Preserve Communities’ own Vice President of Marketing, Jennifer Buntin and her team, the Bay Creek app was designed to be a seamless digital luxury tool. Partnering with industry leader Pacesetter Technology has ensured just that. Pacesetter develops mobile apps for the luxury private club space. George Stavros, founder of Pacesetter, explains some of the key features of the new app for a vacationer or Discovery Tour guest. “For the first time ever, a guest who embarks on a Discovery Visit or vacation at Bay Creek will have a sleek, easy-to-use app that helps them make the most of their Bay Creek getaway,” George explains.

“The app focuses on their visit to Bay Creek but will also highlight what the everyday Bay Creek lifestyle is all about,” he adds. “It’s a great way to help a guest conveniently navigate Bay Creek during their stay and get an idea of what it’s like to live here.”

In short, it’s all about access to truly great experiences. Some of those experiences as a Discovery Guest include a personalized itinerary of their visit and the ability to communicate directly with Bay Creek team members. NATURE CORNER

As spring continues to bloom and summer approaches, Bay Creek is abuzz with activity. New people are visiting, touring, and establishing their homes here. As Bay Creek residents already know, one of the most attractive things about Bay Creek is its nature.

And with that abundance of nature and the natural landscape, Bay Creek’s on staff naturalist, Joe Fehrer, has an enormous—and enjoyable— job. He is passionate about the appreciation and conservation of nature and is especially adept at sharing that passion with others.

We spoke with Joe about what’s happening right now at Bay Creek—from the water to the woods, and beyond. “Most of the trees and shrubs have come in and out of flower and are now at the early stages of setting fruit or seed,” says Joe. “Many of the meadow plants like golden-rods and yarrow will be coming into bloom in the next month or so. There’s just a lot to see. The fishing has really picked up too, as folks who fish in the Preserve area ponds have told me.”

“One of the best things about this time of year is that we’re right in the middle of prime bird migration now. Everything from the largest shorebirds to the smallest warblers, if they haven’t already passed through the area in the last few weeks, they’re doing so right now,” says Joe. “Spending an early morning on the beach or in the Preserve birding, with binoculars in hand, is about as good as it gets. Of course, we also have quite a few resident non-migratory birds that are always fun to observe and learn about.”

“Bay Creek resident, Steve Grimes, who is a retired physician, graciously offered to co-lead some of these birding walks with me,” says Joe. “He’s an excellent birder and during a recent beach walk, we counted 16 species of birds. A lot of these birds are on their way north to the Arctic Circle to breed. They’re here for a few days and then they’re gone,” explains Joe. “Having the Nature Preserve and beach area is wonderful. It allows these long distant migrant

birds—whether it’s a large shorebird or a halfounce warbler—a place to put down, rest and feed, and then continue their journey. It’s a critical piece of their flyway,” he adds.

“Observing the change of the seasons and how that plays out across the landscape here at Bay Creek has been really impressive.”

“The old golf fairways are coming alive with plants and animals as early succession takes hold, there’s so much to see and enjoy,” says Joe.” This spring and summer, Joe will be leading everything from early morning walks on the Preserve to late afternoon/early evening walks on the beach, and more. “We’ll have a varied schedule that will take advantage of all the outdoor experiences Bay Creek has to offer.”

“We hope to be spending time on the water too, kayaking,” says Joe. “We’ll explore the marsh edge and learn about tidal wetland ecology, and we’ll also learn about beach ecology from the inner tidal zone to the dune. Tide permitting, we’ll walk a transect from an offshore sand bar to the dune edge looking for different species that use those habitats.”

“I’m thinking about butterfly walks, and other early morning walks tailored for photographers and birders, and those who just enjoy the stillness of that time of day,” Joe explains. There‘s certainly no shortage of interesting and neat things to see on the beach in the Nature Preserve at sunrise.

We’re not sure how Bay Creek Head Chef Jason Van Marter does on the golf course. But on his home turf in the kitchen, he’s an absolute champion. We’re excited to share that he has just been featured on ‘Clubhouse Eats’ by Golf.com, a feature ‘celebrating the game’s most delectable food and drink.’

First off, way to go, Chef Jason! Bay Creek is honored but not surprised by Golf.com’s feature,

as Chef Jason has had a distinguished career as an exceptional chef and curator of ‘great tastes’ the world over.

‘Bay Sunsets, Fish Tacos, Flip Flops and Sandy Toes…’

Located right on the Bay in Cape Charles Town Harbor, this lively waterfront seafood restaurant and bar gives new meaning to the term, ‘ideal location.’

Golden sunsets over the Chesapeake Bay, outdoor dining on the patio and incredibly fresh, local seafood are just the beginning of this quintessential Cape Charles eatery. Now heading into its tenth season, The Shanty is everything a Cape Charles guest or local would want, and a good deal more.

Owner Jon Dempster remembers how the restaurant began. “I came down to Cape Charles on a boat in 2010 and never left,” laughs the Gloucester, Massachusetts native.

Around the time Jon arrived in his new ‘hometown,’ the Town of Cape Charles was seeking someone to lease the land at the harbor and construct a restaurant. Jon and his business

If you had to choose one restaurant that captured the Cape Charles ‘vibe’, The Shanty would certainly be a top contender.

partner, Mike Doyle, answered the call and in 2012, The Shanty was born. “We were fortunate to be in the right place at the right time,” Jon says.

What started as 1,600-square foot seafood restaurant has now expanded to a 4,000-square foot hot spot with music, creative cocktails, fresh, local seafood and the some of the town’s best views. There’s always something a little different and completely amazing every time you visit The Shanty.

“We try to do creative cocktails and elevate the bar beyond what you’d expect of a waterfront beach bar,” Jon says.

You’ll want to sample some of their bar menu favorites: Cucumber Mint Martini, Peach Basil Mule, or the tried-and-true Shanty Margarita. And then there are the new and unusual shooters and cocktails that appear at any given moment from their talented mixologists.

“We serve 100% domestic sustainable seafood, and we take part in the Virginia Beach Aquarium and Monterey Beach Aquarium sustainable seafood program,” explains Jon. “Our main goal is to buy as local as possible for all of our seafood products.”

Guests can also enjoy steel drums every Friday night courtesy of an incredible local musician JuJu, who has been sharing the vibe at The Shanty for 10 years. “We love to bring in live music… to keep the place lively,” says Jon. This year, things are going to be even more lively than usual as The Shanty hosts Cape Charles’ ‘Crab Slam’ event in August. Celebrating the Eastern Shore of Virginia and the history of working watermen, Crab Slam is a three-day festival with live music, crab skiff races, and the main event Boat Docking on Sunday August 1st.

“We’re excited to host this event for the first time and hope that it becomes an annual mainstay,” says Jon. “It’s a huge event and The Shanty is glad to be a part of it.”

It’s not just the loyal locals and seasonal guests who love The Shanty. Men’s Journal listed The Shanty as one of the “Top 25 Best Beach Bars in America.”

And they’ve won multiple years as Best of Virginia Seafood Restaurant and Best of Virginia Outdoor Dining in Virginia Living’s coveted ‘Best Of Virginia’ awards.
