COVER FEATURE Last year saw SUNSQUABI release "Odyssey" on GRiZ’s All Good Records, constant touring across North America with proclamations of "stealing the show" at big time events like Electric Forest, High Sierra, Camp Bisco, and Hullaween, to mention a few. Now they're back with a terrific new EP 'Deluxe' and guess what, they're back on the road.

Features 52 DRAI'S IN PICTURES

Drai’s Beachclub and Nightclub regularly hosts some of the biggest names in hip-hop and EDM. Over the course of the last few months, we’ve been gathering some spectacular images taken by Tony Tran and his photography team, presenting the best of them in to a Photo Essay of sorts.

72 JOEY NEGRO

On July 12, 1979 at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Illinois, crates of disco records were blown-up and set a blaze to the delight of many rock fans in attendance, as well as to the city’s shockjock DJ Steve Dahl, who incidentally spearheaded the historic event. At that moment in time, Dave Lee, aka Joey Negro, had just turned 15 years old and was two years in with his love affair of the genre.

Markus Schulz Unveils Cover of Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill' & Premieres "The Nine Lives" On May 27, 2017, Markus Schulz debuted his brand new production "The Nine Skies" at Dreamstate in San Francisco, California and will take it to EDC Las Vegas on June 18, Tomorrowland on July 28 and @SW4 ON August 21 in London. For more information on “The Nine Skies” production, jump over to their website at www.thenineskies.com. Following his recent single release, “Mota-Mota,” which is reviewed on page 101, comes a club adaptation on Kate Bush’s "Running Up That Hill." From its outset, 'Running' echoes the pulsing feel of the original, never losing a drop of its famously bittersweet rapture. Markus develops its hypnotic theme, slowly raising its synths from deep within in the drop and finally lifting them to meet its almost impossibly beautiful crescendo. Markus’ search to find exactly the right voice to do justice to his cover was nothing short of exhaustive. After many months and many demos, the hunt ended at the door of singer Bev Wild. A relative electronic music newcomer, it proved to be the crucial tipping-point in the realization his interpretation. Bev brings the track a vocal conviction way beyond her years, sublimating Kate’s inflections brilliantly and conveying every brutally truthful, painfully sensual ounce of 'Running’s' song. Ahead of it’s May 29 release via Coldhabour Recordings, you can hear a clip Markus’ arrangement of "Running Up That Hill" here.

[NEW MUSIC] and Canal+. Clark's pivotal new album of total rave euphoria, "Death Peak," released worldwide through Warp Records, features the tracks "Peak Magnetic" and "Hoova," preceeded by the first single, "Peak Magnetic," on SoundCloud.

Christopher Stephen Clark's music output is pretty impressive— over the span of 15 years, he has released 9 Albums and around a dozen EPs and Singles. You may have also heard some of his compositions outside the dance environment. His talents have been recuited for composing music for Dance: 'Tilted Fawn' performed by Melanie Lane at the Sydney Opera House; For Film: with the track 'The Pining Pt.2' from "Iradelphic" was featured in the 2013 film Elysium and the track "Vengeance Drools" which was used in a domestic violence awareness advertising campaign by Woman's Aid, which starred Keira Knightley and TV in which Clark scored the 2015 six-part TV series The Last Panthers starring Samantha Morton, John Hurt and Tahar Rahim, broadcast in Europe by Sky Atlantic

18 | Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 9

"Death Peak" deftly weaves together the various threads of Clark's extensive work, intertwining euphoric melodies and visceral rhythms of warehouse rave with newer vocal and choral elements. Speaking about the release, Clark says: "I want to extend the boundary of what's possible in music but not lose sight of the complex, emotional story telling at the heart of it. Death Peak is a riddle of these most pure and lucid moments, condensed into an enduring and continuous musical wheel." The design of the album cover is that of a crumpled photograph of Clark himself, produced by photographer Alma Haser. Buy it here.

[MUSIC PRODUCTION 101] IN PARTNER SHI P W I T H MAT T C A L DW E L L PR

GOZZO

For our latest installment of the Music Production 101 series with our partners over at Matt Caldwell PR, Ecuador based DJ and producer Gozzo talks about everything there is to need to know about music production including gear, samples, plug-ins and more. But first, here's a brief backstory. Since exploding onto the Dance music scene, Quito native Gozzo has quickly become one of the most promising and exciting new artists on the clubbing circuit. Taught by a former member of super-group Soda Stereo, Juan Ignacio Moncayo, the mastermind behind the Gozzo moniker, has already achieved in a short space of time some emphatic feats. Gozzo has releases on imprints such as Audiophile Records, in which he remixes E.K.O and Maya Maman’s hit collaboration ‘Something About You’, the Economist graduate has already managed to hit the Hypeddit Top 100 charts - #4 on the Dubstep chart and #52 on the Deep House chart - monumental achievements for any calibre of producer. With a fresh and uncommon approach to sound design, his records incuding his infectious ‘Remix Series’, have been featured on DJDigitalPool and has gained colossal amounts of airplay on Ecuador’s premiere Dance music Radio Station, Alfa Radio something that many aspiring artists can only dream of accomplishing. Taking time out of the studio, Gozzo can be found teaching music production in the Music School that he established to nurture and develop upcoming talents (TMS), but one thing is for sure, it won’t be long before Gozzo himself is rubbing shoulders with the industry’s elite at the top of the Dance music ladder. Now, on to the interview.

34 | Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 9

Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 9 | 35

Hi Gozzo, thanks for taking time to talk to us about the production aspect of your career. Can you tell us about how you got involved in producing? Gozzo: HI! Thanks for this interview! Well, at first when I was 14, I started to play drums in Rock Band PS3 videogame, haha. Eventually my best friend told me to take some drum lessons at the Conservatory of Music. Seven months later they shut the doors on us due to bankruptcy. Nevertheless, I started looking for a great teacher with no luck at all. One day when buying some drumsticks, the salesman recommended me to a guy called Frank Guerrero (Yamaha International Drummer). So I took lessons with him for 4 years and he introduced me to some key aspects of feeling the groove and not just playing drums. After that, I took some piano lessons for over a year. At that time I felt that something was really missing, so I started to search for a Music Production teacher and found Daniel Sais (Ex – Soda Stereo member). He introduced me to the basics and taught me how to use Logic Pro X (So far I was using Garage Band to arrange some loops) While studying Economics at College, I founded a Modern Music School called TMS with my partner Frank (At first we had lessons of many instruments, now it is focused on composition and music production) I started to make some music with Amalia Cárdenas (Local Artist – Singer and Teacher) and learned a lot! That was a crucial point in my life as I decided to become a Producer rather than an Economist. Are you self-taught producer? Gozzo: Mainly on technical aspects and

36 | Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 9

creating hooks ideas. Deeper concepts such as groove – music theory – Bass Dynamics, etc. I had to learn from a lot of people including my friends who don´t know anything about the music process. How do you develop your music production skills and talents? Gozzo: By creating new projects whenever it´s possible. I try not to follow step by step other producer’s music process. There is nothing more gratifying than listening to your own original work. Always tell my students

to focus on their identity rather than their sound engineering; the last thing will come eventually.

What’s the typical process you go through when working on a new tune?

Where do you get your inspiration from when producing new music?

Gozzo: It depends, if it is a remix I start to get all chords just right with a simple piano and then start experimenting with sounds and rhythmic patterns. If it’s an original track, it really depends on the mood of the track. For chill songs I prefer to start with the melody and for party songs I always start with the beat.

Gozzo: I need to be totally relaxed; my mood definitely affects my compositions. I am more a trial and error kind of guy; my creativity works better that way. Sometimes my ideas just come in a dream and that´s it. My advice is to do as many things non-music related as possible.

Do you have a favorite production technique? Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 9 | 37

CM 38 | Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 9

Gozzo: I think that pushing your boundaries on every production is what gives the extra touch to the song. Always trying things that you are not comfortable with. When you are producing, what are your go to plugins and equipment? Gozzo: I love the synths from Native Instruments and Output, Logic pro X default synths are very useful too. I use M3 -8 Studio Monitors and a Native instruments Interface (Komplete Audio 6) and a 27 inches iMac Core i7 2014 model. What’s your favorite synth? Gozzo: Substance by Output. What’s your favorite sample pack? Gozzo: EDM Risers and Drops V3 from Loopmasters. Do you have any favorite plugins for mixing and mastering? Gozzo: For mixing, I prefer to use Native Instruments Dynamics processors and Logic Pro X factory plugins. For mastering, by far iZotope 7. What plugins/equipment is on your master channel? Gozzo: Everything is inside the box, adaptive limiters; EQ; and of course iZotope 7! How long does it usually take you to complete a new track? Gozzo: A month most of the time. Which traits do you think make an excellent producer? Gozzo: Accept critics. Try different things. Collaborate with a lot of people. Being passionate about making music. Not producing just for earning a lot of money. Finally, what can we expect in terms of new music from Gozzo? Gozzo: I am at Demo Stage on a project called My Dharma! I think you will love the sound design and hooks from this song. It is definitely one to listen to and dance. Just stay tuned! Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 9 | 39

ut of Vienna, Austria is the mysterious trio Gudrun Von Laxenburg. Identified by first names only—July, Christoph, and Daniel, respectively, come from musical backgrounds that usually have nothing to do with electronic music. July is a jazz

trained drummer, Christoph is a classically trained violinist, and Daniel came up as a hardrock guitarist. What started out as a joke has now turned in to a career path that has created an international and fueling a rapidly growing fan base. The story goes, it all began when the trio first “jammed out” at a friend’s party back in 2009 and Daniel comments: “It all started out as joke. We never sat down and said ‘right, let’s make a serious hard-hitting band. Even our name is a joke. We just took the street names we lived on and made an aristocratic name out of them. The joke is a big part of our live shows. We’re not cool kids all dressed in black or covered in Bling, we’re there in costume, making noises and having a good time the audience.” Today, they are signed to major label Skint/BMG UK and have recently released a full

length LP titled "Panic!" preceded by the singles 'Just Can’t Get Enough,' 'Moving Water' and 'Revolution.' "Word of Mouth" is arguably one of the most effective tools to growing a fan base from a Grassroots level to a global audience. Gudrun Von Laxenburg has used the accumulated “buzz” to build an impressive on-going history of live dates performing at Europe’s largest music festivals and beyond. Staying true to their revered reputation, they continue to demonstrate true punk spirit and attitudes with roots well anchored to live interaction with their technical gear, instruments and visuals they use. These are the driving forces and common denominator as to why the “buzz” is abound, which brings me back to the beginning of this profile. Gurdun Von Laxenburg is a mystery. One to definitely search out and keep an eye on and look out for 2017 tour dates in a city near you. Oh, and one more thing, get the new album Panic! Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 9 | 43

Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 9 | 65

S

unsquabi is an electro-funk-dance music trio made up by Chris Anderson (Drums), Josh Fairman (Bass/Synths) and Kevin Donohue (Guitar/Keys/Production) out of Boulder Colorado and what they do is unique to the typical live dance music experience, in the music the produce and they way the go about it in performance and presentation. Last year saw the release of "Odyssey" on GRiZ’s All Good Records and constant touring across North America with proclamations of "stealing the show" at big time events like Electric Forest, High Sierra, Camp Bisco, and Hullaween, to mention a few. Now they are riding high on their "breakout year," having just released a brand new multi-track package

What is the significance of the name SunSquabi and is the name a representation of the musical direction you have taken thus far? KD: The greatest part about our name, is that it means nothing else other than our identity. Having this identity and this freedom has given us all a very open mind about what this project can be about. The word is just a word we used a lot like 'dude' when we were kids, and when it came time to name the project, it seemed like the perfect fit. Tell us about the upcoming release "Deluxe" and what can Sunsquabi fans expect to hear on the new release?

"I wake up the same way everyday, have a coffee, smoke a bowl & play my guitar.

We are just very grateful to have to the chance to play music as often as we do, and we plan to continue doing it for a very long time. I'm sure 2018 will feel the same!" —KD

66 | Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 9

KD: "Deluxe" is full of a lot of tight grooves. We worked very specifically on pocket and making everything gel together for this release. There are a ton of vintage keyboards (A100 Organ, Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, Hohner D6, Acoustic grand piano) that we recorded at Scanhope Sound here in Colorado. The engineer on the whole record (as well as Odyssey) is our new bass player Josh Fairman. I would say this EP has the most detailed sound of any release from us so far. What would you say was that "ah-ha" moment during the creative process behind the new release that set the theme and direction of the music writing?

titled "Deluxe," the second EP for All Good and a cross country tour to support it. So far, 3 singles have been officially released: 'Pygmy Up' with Russ Liquid, 'Cinnamon' with Late Night Radio, and most recently 'Dexter.' To celebrate the new EP, Sunsquabi are currently on the road presenting their new music across the United States with return visits to Enchanted Forest, High Sierra, Camp Bisco, multiple club gigs and a date a Red Rocks. A couple of days before the 'Deluxe' Tour kick off, we arranged this Q&A with Guitarist/Keyboardist/ Producer Kevin Donohue hitting on a few topics like the name Sunsquabi and what is the meaning behind it, taking their music on the road and what they would be doing if not producing music together as Sunsquabi.

KD: A lot of the inspiration for me came from traveling the country last year with The Floozies. We had just released "Odyssey," and being in a different city every night was just such an incredible experience, it was hard not to stay inspired. So, I spent a lot of time on the bus creating new ideas that we took into the studio when we got home. Over the summer and pretty much through August we recorded the rest of the tracks that we needed and it pretty much wrote itself. Â You've had a busy Spring 2017 touring schedule, how has the reception been of the new music (we assume you are debuting in your sets)?

KD: This year so far has been incredible, and the response from our fans and new friends alike is truly overwhelming. We are so grateful to be getting out there and making people smile. We feel that we have really been locking in together as a band, communicating well on stage and off, planning our sets in greater detail and overall just keeping it tight. We've been feeling very present with our audiences recently. What are your challenges of performing the music you produce in a live setting? KD: I think the important thing to remember when we're performing is just to relax and have fun with it.

Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 9 | 67

The live-electronic / jam band/ dj set realm of the music world we exist in is limitless with potential for musical ideas. We are consciously trying to let go of the expectations of what a "Live-Electronic" band is supposed to be. The light shows, the huge sound systems...we get to be a part of all of that... but with it we have the instruments. It is our tool to connect with the audience, that we are feeling what you are feeling and translating that into the instrument for you. Do you see 2017 in a different light since 2016 provided success on the "Odyssey" release and how so? KD: I wake up the same way every day, have a coffee, smoke a bowl, and play my guitar. We are just very grateful to have to the chance to play music as often as we do, and we plan to continue doing it for a very long time. I'm sure 2018 will feel the same! When and how did GRiZ's All Good Records become interested in SunSquabi? KD: The first track we collaborated on together was 'Get Down' (GRiZ x Manic Focus Say It Loud 2015). Manic Focus was really the introduction into working on music directly with GRiZ. Grant lived down the street from our rehearsal spot in Boulder, and it was very easy for us to link up and work on music together. We also have a lot of things in common, weed, super nintendo, saxophone. And that's really what All Good Records is: An epic collection of true friends and like-minded people working together to do good through music. If you, as individuals, were not working together producing music, what would your career path look like?

68 | Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 9

KD: I am 100% certain that the three of us would be playing and producing music in some way or another. Chris is a hustler, and has the musical talent in his family. Josh would probably go on to produce 420 gold and platinum records, and I would be an ambient/dreamscape/downtempo producer/music therapist. What is your favorite city to visit and gig in? Why?

KD: This is the toughest question to answer... Over the years we have created so many lifelong friendships in places all over the country, and to pick one as a favorite would just seem like a disservice to the others. Having said that, we've been going to New Orleans quite a bit recently... the culture and the history there is amazing, and it just feels like there's always something extraordinary to do. Taos, NM is quite beautiful

too...and San Francisco...and Las Vegas...and Chicago...and Atlanta...Okay so we really like touring. Thank you!

JOEY NEGRO 21ST CENTURY DISCO KING Written by JOSEPH WENSELL

On July 12, 1979 at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Illinois, crates of disco records were blown-up and set a blaze to the delight of many rock fans in attendance, as well as to the city’s shock-jock DJ Steve Dahl, who incidentally spearheaded the historic event. At that moment in time, Dave Lee, aka Joey Negro, had just turned 15 years old and was two years in with his love affair of the genre. During the next 38 years his love for disco did not waiver. On June 30, 2017, Negro’s label Z Records will release a collection of 11 tracks showcasing new and original music packaged in a triple vinyl set, double CD and as a digital download. Hyped, and rightfully so, as a buoyant, life-affirming, disco inspired album that offers welcome relief from the grey-faced march of modern club music, Joey Negro's "Produced With Love" keeps the disco fire burning. Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 9 | 73

Photography courtesy of Dave Lee

O

ver the course of his career, which spans over three decades, Joey Negro has amassed a spectacular discography of remix recordings for Grace Jones, Diana Ross, Deep Dish, Lionel Richie, Mariah Carey, Tears For Fears, Ultra Nate, Masters At Work, Roy Ayers, Blaze, and Roger Sanchez, and let's not forget his own productions going back to 1988’s contribution to "The Garage Sound of Deepest New York" to his very first LP in 1993 titled "Universe of Love" to last year’s Grammy nominated, DJ Magazine’s Compilation Winner and Traxsource’s best-seller "Remixed With Love Vol. 2." Surprisingly, "Produced With Love" is Joey Negro’s second full-length album of original compositions in more than 20 years. This album is guaranteed to make you move with Joey Negro’s modernization of disco music on full display, featuring long time co-writer and singer-songwriter, Diane Charlemagne on three tracks: "Prove That You’re Feeling Me," "Must Be The Music," and "Overnight Sensation," plus all star appearances from Horse Meat Disco, R&B singers Angela Johnson, Melba Moore and Sacha Williamson. The three opening tracks, "Prove That You’re Feeling Me," "Free Bass" featuring the pristine funky bass work of Julian Crampton and "Won’t Let Go" featuring the spoken words of Linda Clifford that brings to mind Ronny Jordan’s 1993 acid jazz colossal hit, "The Jackel" masterfully set the feel for the album, a feel good and modern classic that is "Produced With Love."

2017 through Hospital Records. The recording captures the first ever "live" performance of the 20 member Big Band. The fusion of jazz and drum and bass in a live big band format sets an impressive insight as to where the evolution of dance music, let alone drum and bass music, can go. The album is full of big brassy sounds, equally big D’n’B rhythms and underlying gritty electronics, and the groove bass lines provided by Colman himself demonstrate his "jazz" chops as a seasoned player and leader. The live Horns also feature throughout the album, most notably the soulful accompaniments to the trumpet solo on 'Just One Second.' Other highlights worth mentioning include the opening track 'Remember The Future,' 'Elekrticity Will Keep Me Warm,' 'Song In The Key Of Knife' and the closing track, Daft Punk’s 'One More Time.' —Joseph Arthur Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 9 | 79

CASHMERE CAT 9 MAD LOVE/INTERSCOPE

 Over the last five years Magnus August Høiberg, now known as Cashmere Cat, has released 2 EPs, 2012’s "Mirror Maru" and 2014’s "Wedding Bells." In between and up to his debut full-length album titled "9," he’s lent his production skills to top draws Kanye West, The Weeknd, and Ariana Grande. The Norwegian is the 2016 Spellmannprisen Producer of the Year winner (Norway's Grammy Awards), has a 2016 Grammy Best R&B Song nomination for 'LUV' with Tory Lanez, and contributions on Kanye West's "Life of Pablo," Ariana Grande's 2014 album "My Everything," and where it all began, an edit of 2 Chainz 'No Lie' which placed him at the top of Vibe Magazine's list of "25 Awesome Genre-Benders of 2012." "9" features 4 previously released singles in 'Wild Love,' 'Trust Nobody,' 'Love Incredible' and '9 (after Coachella).' The project brings long time fan and

mentor of sorts, Benny Blanco in a producer’s role and features The Weeknd, Francis and the Lights, Selena Gomez, Tory Lanez, Camila Cabello, MØ, Sophie, Kehlani Parrish, Kacy Hill, Ariana Grande, Ty Dolla Sign and Jhené Aiko. The 10 tracks, spread out over 34 minutes, you’ll be treated to shiny moments of electronica brilliance, soulful and minimalistic vocal deliveries, morsels of hip-hop, drum and bass, and soul. One thing is for sure, some of the electronics used throughout are sounds that are entirely his own and as the album progresses, so does the level of gorgeous strangeness in rhythms, melodies and sound design. Every track really stands out, however the songs that really resonate with me are: 'Europa Pools' featuring Kacy Hill's mystical voice, the anthemic '9 (after Coachella),' 'Quit' featuring Ariana Grande, and the real surprise, 'Victoria’s Veil.' It is cleverly written with a sunny and sugary pop melody, soaring falsetto vocals, acoustic instruments and of course weird electronics. Switching things up a little and ripe with an R&B flavor, backed bya chill dance groove, 'Trust Nobody' featuring Selena Gomez, followed by 'Love Incredible' featuring Camila Cabello, solidly proves that Cashmere Cat can expertly navigate from the weird and strange to a wider cross-genre audience. This debut album is quite impressive and the usage of so many different electronic effects that are not typically heard in today’s dance music productions, is for me, what makes it special. Cashmere Cat has put forth his unique sounds, making a strong statement with this all-star cast of guest collaborators, and with a major label behind him, one can assume that this young producer has a very bright future ahead. Excellent!

CHILDREN OF THE ATØM 0 Isn't O COTA

 Every once-in-a-while, an album comes out that blows away the listener. Deserving of wide spread attention, Children of the ATØM and their self-released "Ø Isn’t O" is one of those albums. From start to finish, it is full of amazing and tantalizing electronic textures and layers designed for the musically adventurous. The album's backstory goes as such: "Two Norwegian volunteers found their death in the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Their souls were able to escape and travel to Girona where they got into the bodies of two young musicians. It was a slow possession, a strong fight that lasted hours which ended with the fusion and victory of the two musicians, now known as Children Of The ATØM." "Ø Isn’t O," gives you 8 tracks spanning a range of styles from Ambient to Hard Techno and like I said in the beginning, it is fantastic. The music

throughout is theatric, epic, bold, and danceable with tight grooves and rhythms. Track by track you become a full participant to the music, simply by listening, and doing so, it becomes easy to imagine what their live shows would be like. It has been said that, on stage, they’re decked out in nuclear protective suits and masks, transforming their live shows into "electronic" performance art through their music and visuals. If this is the case, it is a perfect fit to the musical narrative. If you are reading this review, You must check out the music for yourself. I have a feeling that once heard, becoming a fan will be a no-brainer. The album opens up with 'First Steps (Intro)' with an apocolyptic visage that seemlessly leads to the second cut 'See u Soon,' taking you down a dark road with driving drums and bass. Things get crazy with the third track 'Spirits.' The high enegry dance groove, buzzing electronics, thumping drums and evil like vocals make this track one of the highlights. 'MØMA' has more of dance floor feel featuring shuffling drum beats, low end synth pulses and clicks, conversational styled vocal samples under an influence of Industrial Dance Music. On 'Radioactivity,' the track begins with sounds from a Geiger Counter, tolling electronic generated bell sounds, big vocals, thumping kick drums, rhythmic high hat cymbal sounds, grinding and buzzing electronics. The last six minutes of the album are the tracks 'HØRD,' a tightly grooved driving dance track that heavy on the low end of all of the instrumentation used. The closing title track 'Ø Isn’t O' is just a short one minute, theatrical spoken word with minimalistic underpinnings, soft keys and distortion, kind of nightmarish. Like I said, this is an album of songs that is full of dance, industrial slants, dark twists, futuristic and apocalyptic themes that is a delight to listen to.

ESTANCIA LA MAR SESIONES DE PANAMÁ MUSIC FOR DREAMS

 Estancia La Mar is a "dream-team" trio made up of three of the most sought after names in the Chilean music scene: Mario Martinez, Pablo Munez and Juan Pabla Abalo. "Sesiones de Panamá' was recorded live in a studio, producing six tracks giving you over fifty minutes of music that shines with soothing atmospheric and psychedelic soundscapes, house and Balearic that make up the perfect ingredients for this Music For Dreams release. 'Botavara' opens the album with a dreamy xylophone melody on a backdrop of breezy synthesizer generated layers and in the background is the progressive percussion rhythms that are integral, however, so, so subtle that quickens the pace leading you to the 2nd track, 'La Casa Del Torrero.' Following in the footsteps of the opening track, this melody once again features a xylophone but more in an experimental fashion that evolves and grows through the use of electronics.

82 | Beatselector Magazine | Issue N° 9

Bringing some dramatics to the track they use simple piano chords, trippy sound effects, and a shuffling trancy inducing electronic drum rhyhtm. Third in line is the track 'El Pacifico Mexicano.' The driving electronic percussion beats moves you along a jungle inspired song dripping with layers of brightly orchestrated synthesizer chords. Halfway in and you're at 'Isla Margarita.' Hypnotic, but not too overbearing, this ten minute track is bright and rolls along nicely in a peaceful easy ambient groove, giving one a a feeling of deep relaxation. On the track 'Terminos & Condiciones' they move in a slightly different direction featuring a vocal sample and utilizing the feel of the album's music thus far in, but like I said it's slightly different. 'Polaris,' the closer, has the dance groove firmly nailed down powered by pulsating bass drums kicks, rapid electronics and bringing the return of the wooden mallet instrumentation (either a xylophone or vibraphone), putting forth the most dancey track of the six. I'm a fan of Music For Dreams productions and the label consitently releases great music that is expected, yet unexpected and I never ever walk away disappointed. As a matter of fact, most of the time, I return to MFD releases again and again for repeat listens. The "Sesiones de Panamá" album will certainly be on my repeat list. So, for those that are inclined to ambient music with just a taste of house and Balearic touches and are looking for that perfect soundtrack to chill out, appreciate, or meditate with, this album would be an excellent choice. One last thing to mention here and that is the musical talents that are represented in the compositions and songwriting. Martinez, Munez and Abalo each apply their skills as writers and musical visionaries and easily became a cohesive unit producing such a high standard recording.

SIAN CAPITAL CRIME WAVE OCTOPUS RECORDINGS

 For ten years, Sian has been running and growing his label Octopus Recordings with an impressive roster of artists and releases that include Nicole Moudaber, Pleasurekraft, Alan Fitzpatrick, Julian Jeweil, just to name a few. Residing now in Los Angeles, Sian has released a massive full-length studio album of 20 tracks that will appeal to fans of warehouse techno, intergalactic hip-hop, and dubbed out electronica, titled "Capital Crimewave." The new album features fellow Los Angeles hip-hop artists AG Fernandez and CL. From beginning to end, the blending of techno and hip-hop reigns supreme with AG Fernandez laying down positive lyrics in a effortless fashion on eight tracks that compliment sophisticated rhythms and bass booms perfectly suited for big room techno club dance floors. The music is progressive and futuristic and, quite honestly, an advancement

in the development of experimental dance music on the hinges of dark, and energetic technolaced dance music. Throughout, you’ll be treated to some extraordinary programming and usage of electronics. Anyone who has leanings towards adventurous, alternative and progressive electronic music tastes, these songs will absolutely transcend you from the past to the future, across the two wellestablished genres. By showcasing the talents of AG Fernandez, as well as CL, it also puts Sian in position to be a leading voice in the transitional changes of incorporating hip-hop flavors with techno through the lyrical prose and voicings they deliver and are a testament to the evolutionary leaps that are well underway, as demonstrated in each of the 20 tracks. Personally, while the hip-hop infused tracks such as 'Change,' 'Underrated,' 'Kinetic Energy' and 'Flowing' are brillliant with a breakout vocal performance from Hernandez in particular, I find the instrumentals to be exceptional, because the diversity and stylings kept me interested in the intricate and complexity of the compositions, easily transformed into epic tracks that really highlight his talents. Standing out amongst those are: 'Autofocus,' 'Stuxnet,' 'Python,' 'Never Retro' and 'Camouflage.' Listen more than once, and with headphones, and you'll discover something new each time and if heard in a club setting, it will open the aural sensations and will get your body moving. This album is an excellent example of an artist taking chances, getting away from the standards of today by reflecting on the past and taking the crossgenres of techno and hip-hop in to the future. On a side note, at the time of the official release, Sian has taken the "Capital Crimewave" production on a multi-national tour with several dates across the U.S. in June and July. SLAPTOP WITH YOU SUNSQUAD

 "With You" marks two milestones for Slaptop. First, it is his debut full-length album of all original music. And, second, it marks the launch of his label, Sunsquad. Slaptop’s quick rise to fame was in part fueled by his official remixes for Zhu, Fetty Wap, Bob Moses, and Jaymes Young just to name a few. But quite simply, in my opinion, it was just a matter of time before the San Francisco based producer received his due. This debut of 11 original new songs featuring guest appearances by Geneva White, Will Fraker, Olivia Florentino, Tate Kobang, Maxine Marcus, and Rozzi Crane, and further demonstrates that the producer is brilliantly and beautifully unpredictable when it comes to choice of genres and tempos. From start to finish, it has to be a daunting task when it comes to choosing tracks listings for assembling an album. "Ebb and flow, seamless

transitions,” and so on…are all familiar terms we read in critiques from time to time, and probably most of the time, it’s overlooked as being a vital part of a final production. Well, Slaptop has managed to present in this debut album, 11 tracks that mix it up stylistically and in varying degrees of moody colors, lyrically themed around relationship woes, obstacles, and endings with his precise order of songs. Just like rollercoaster described relationships, this collection of songs takes you up and down with really good song composition based in disco to house to hiphop, and chill. And despite the difference in feel of each track, you will completely be hooked in to what is going on in the music. My favorite tracks include: 'Panama,' 'With You,' 'Jump Into' featuring the gorgeous singing of Maxine Marcus and 'Palm.' Excellent, equally full of bright splashes against the darker moods, mixing a formula that works. Worth mentioning are two other songs that will appeal. First up is the disco embellsihed 'Passenger' featuring Will Fraker and second, the rap/pop cross-over track 'What I Mean' featuring Tate Kobang. Every so often comes an album that crosses all barriers and presents quite simply, a music lovers delight. By mixing up the feel of the record from disco to jazz, bright moods to dark, crossover to the eclectic, anyone who loves electronic music as a whole, will become fans. I highly recommend listening to "With You" and emerse yourself in the music and if you are like me, you'll certainly realize why the a-listers chose him early on to work with. Now with this 11 song debut, praised in the international press, is solid proof that being out front and releasing his original music is an exciting beginning of what is yet to come.

VARIOUS ARTISTS MOVING HOUSE 2017 SUBFIELD

 Back in the 90’s Geoffroy Mugwamp was instrumental in showcasing cutting- edge producers of house music through his heralded "Moving House" compilation albums. June 2, 2017, marks the return of the series with "Moving House 2017" featuring the likes of Andrew Weatherall, Tuff City Kids, Roman Flügel, Toby Tobias, Front De Cadeaux, Arbeid Adelt and DC Salas among others within the modern day house, disco and techno scenes. The 17 song collection opens and closes with two versions of 'Read The Signs' by Cage & Aviary, a vocal rendition and an instrumental, both of which are crisp, bright and made for the dance floor. The next track, 'Dubba' featuring F2C, is just as the title states, heavy in dub rhythms and heavy in dance beats. Max Pask’s 'Apophenia' displays a bouncy jungle beat, gritty low bass tones, and a distorted synth Sci-fi melody. Toby Tobias’ 'Lorimer Funk' brings to this collection an electro disco inflected complimented by funky overtones and a delicious

groove. Are you nostalgic for 80’s style instrumental new wave music? Roman Flügel’s 'People_and_ Places' takes you back to the days of Yaz(oo) and the Vince Clarke era electronic dance music. It is very nice hear how electronic music from that period in time is now being re-introduced to the present. The next two tracks, 'Mitro' by TCK and 'Nothing So Far' take you from a sunny cinematic soundscape to a pulsing bass heavy track a rhythm filled with a looping synthesizer melody and slight industrial/ house sounds, tripped out vocal samples. Then comes the 'De Man Die Alles Noteert' reworked by DC Salas, and it’s one the best tracks with a sick bass line, shiny synths and a sexy vocal bit is just killin’. So, half way in, you’ve heard music, good music with shades of funk, electronica, dub, new wave, and deep house. The bottom half of this album kicks off with Christian S. Koein’s 'Duesseldorf' over seven minutes of glorious minimalist techno followed by Duncan Gray’s 'Clean' demonstrating some tasty work, with an electric guitar loop and a dirty bass line and some wild electronica thrown in. Finally we get to hear some Mugwamp on the track 'Brundlefly' with Pete Herbert. It drives you with futuristic sounds that are hypnotic and trance inducing. The one and only Andrew Weatherall delivers his iconic sounds in 'Kaif' full of very deep and bass and drums, psychedelic bits and chant like vocals. 'God Is Gracious' has Mugwamp digging back to the 80's world of electronic new wave dance music. Good beats, bass, and a bright piano line in front of sweeping layers of color and a progressively quickening snyth melody. Closing the album are the tracks 'A Museum To Myself' by Duncan Gray, a joint effort from Mugwamp & DC Salas on 'Bang The Box' and a remix of 'Koein Duesseldorf' by Bryan Kessler Regio. Bottomlining it here, anyone who has followed Mugwamp’s career will be thrilled to know that this resurrected series is back and continues to shine the spotlight on some of today’s most exciting producers working in the underground. Get it.

LIQUID STRANGER WEIRD AND WONDERFUL WAKAAN





Camo & Krooked released a 2 track EP back in March as a teaser from an upcoming full length album coming later this year via Ram Records/ BMG/Sony Music. Representing the music capitol of the world, Vienna, these guys are changing the mold and have formulated a sound steeped deep in minimalism and sonic sounds that have separated them from the rest of the DnB pack. The lead track, 'Good Times, Bad Times,' highlights harmonious and strong vocals driven by cracking drum rhythms, a sweet guitar lick, and a wide spectrum of electronics that are expertly placed within in the structure of the song. Krooked takes center stage on the track 'Honesty' lending his angelic voice for the very first time in stellar fashion against the driving drum beats and pulsating rhythms. Can we expect more of the same with the new forthcoming LP? I hope so.

Coming out of Scottsdale, Arizona is Liquid Stranger. His latest EP release "Weird and Wonderful" crosses barriers and genres ranging from Electronica to Bass, and infuses elements of funk and reggae that will appeal to his growing fan base and will entice others to join in on the whack, weird, spacedout music presented on this collection of 6 tracks. As you begin your listening journey, you’ll appreciate the creative and unusual selection of sounds and effects delivering a futuristic feeling of glorious electronica. The next 20 minutes begins with 'Who' and 'SPACEBOSS,' both of which are on opposite ends of galactic noisescape. You also get a skanky reggae, infused with electronics on the aptly titled 'Frankenskank.' 'Hotbox' shines with more weird sounds, lush backgrounds and rap lyricist that rocks. The closer, 'Get Well Soon (Aaron),' brings you a slow and magical mellow departure.

Max Styler is on fire! And so is this remix package of two tracks from his debut LP "Heartache." 'Gold' and 'Deep Dreams' brings reworkings of the originals by a team hand picked by Dim Mak: Jameston Theives, Awoltalk, and Flapo. This remix package also follows a previous remix package of the LPs title track featuring SMLE, MERCE and Taiki Nulight. With the "Gold/Deep Dreams" Remixes, first up is Jameston Thieves at the controls on 'Gold.' This remix is gigantic, powerful, and sets the gold standard as to how future bass mixes should be conceived. Flapo’s take on 'Deep Dreams' is awesome with a subtle and cleverly placed underlying ragga beat, accentuated vocals by KARRA, along with the dance club beat. Awoltalk’s remix of 'Gold' is a drop and roll juggernaut with interspersed atmospheric sounds and quickening drum rhythms leading the way to multiple drops.

Paul Woolford’s 2 track EP features two gems in 'Chaos' and 'Meditate,' both of which presents two different sides of creativity in sound design from Woolford. 'Chaos' is a multi-layered, pulsating piece with a definite nod towards Techno. The usage of electronic sound effects against the upper and lower registers, interweaving melodies exhibiting creativity and wild imagination. 'Meditate' is a hybrid of sorts featuring a soulful female vocal sample giving you a feeling reminiscent of 90s nu-soul. The keyboard melody softly in the background against the occasional boom, groovy bass line and shuffling drum beat rhythm drive it along in house vein, but the weird electronics interspersed make it all the more interesting, hence the "hybrid" association mentioned above. This 2 track Paul Woolford project is tasty treat for Edible. Go ahead and take bite, you like what you hear.

Adam Hyde and Reuben Styles’ explosive 2014 hit 'High' moved the duo known as Peking Duk from the Australian music scene to the international stage. Late in 2016, they released another massive track, 'Stranger' featuring Elliphant, and guess what? The song broke out with tens of millions of streams, complimented by a twisted must see video and a two part remix project showcasing the talents of Destructo, Y2K, Blanke,Wax Motif, Faux Tales and Jackel. Part one opens with Destructo’s remix, a slightly darker, distorted bass groove with quickly paced cymbal patterns and lower register synths all designed for a packed dance floor. Y2K follows more of an acoustic formula using traditional percussion, keys, and guitar that are propped up with soaring electro and an echo-ish style vocal chorus. Electro and Bass fans will dig Blanke’s remix as it brings you a heavy and driving sound of epic proportions.

Part 2 of the Stranger Remix project features Wax Motif’s wildly trippy bass electronics and the heavy helium sounding vocal treatment combined with a future house influence gives the track the most unique version among the 7 remixes. Faux Tales' rework is a driving force, very polished, and builds in tempo and anticipation to a tremendous dance groove. Personally, this particular remix is my favorite of the entire set. Slowing it down masterfully, Jackal adds a completely different laid back flavor entirely while keeping true to the original version of the song. Dance floor junkies will love the Benson remix. It’s heavy on the low end with thumping kick drums and bass and the rising melody that segues into an awesome mid section and closes out in a soothing flare. This is an outstanding take on this song and a highlight of the set.



Save this date! June 12, 2017. Why, you ask? The date marks a 4 track EP release coming from Detroit’s legendary house music producer Rick Wade. The Cacao Records series "Portraits" showcases legendary artists that have influenced and inspired them of the course of their careers. Both versions of the lead track 'Discolicious' brings you back to the classic disco vibe and as the title suggests, it is deliciously disco. Using all the ingredients of the genre, horns, deep bass, claps, strings, and throwing in a little electro and when K.E.E.N.E. get his hands on it, watch out! The second track 'Still Angry' is a more laid back old school house jam loaded with groove over 7 minutes long. Gonzo-Gonzo’s edit takes the track one step beyond with an emphasis on the looping melodic structure and the bouncy bass turning it into a slightly more modernistic dance track.

Talamanca System is a super-group of sorts representing the International Feel imprint. When you bring Gerd Jansen, Phillip Lauer and Mark Barrott together, magical music creation is certain to happen. "On My Past Is Your Future," features two additional mixes: 'Beatless Stars is Space' and 'Chukka Chukka Dance.' I urge you to get onboard and pay attention. This is music that fuses everything that is great about house music and Balearic, turning it into a hybrid dance oriented burner. It’s beautifully melodic and mysterious, and the bold dance slant will take you into the deep grooves, put you in to a nirvana dream like state (just like the official press release states) and leave you wanting to hear more. This is just a taste of what comes from a session when these three artists get together and create. And, with this preview of what is come, we will not be disappointed.

Following up on her first original track 'Prelude' comes "Wide Awake & Dreaming," co-written with Tommy Rocks, whom she met incidentally at Spinnin’ Records songwriting camp. The track was written with the inspiration of realizing long held dreams becoming reality in a moment’s notice. It is gorgeously hypnotic, deep in bounce and yet it’s mellow, soothing and that’s because Amba’s sweet delivery and expressive vocals make it so. Musically, there’s a lot going on in the background, the expertly use electronics and other effects such as echos, clicks and claps that provide an exquisite musical landscape by which Amba’s voice is featured. To fully appreciate what’s going on In the track, hit replay, replay, and replay.

In November 2016 I wrote a multi-page feature article on Conor Paton better known as Conro, published in our 7th issue. While doing my home work learning about Paton and listening to his previous 5 recordings for Monstercat, I quickly realized why he was being hyped as a significant new voice in the future bass genre. So, when we received notice of a new single, we were eager to hear what the track had to offer. With one listen of 'Chardonnay,' his 6th release for Monstercat, it is clearly apparent that the Canadian producer is becoming a trailblazer. Teaming up with vocalist Karra the duo blend a popish feel with a heavy future bass slant that is sure to be a summer time favorite. And as the chorus goes, "watching waves and sipping on Chardonnay," this recent track is sunny, crisp, and essential Conro.

CRASH LAND CRASH LAND STMPD RCRDS

DANIEL WANROOY & CUESTA LOEB ALL MY LIFE DANCEPUSH





Martin Garrix’s STMPD RECRDS stands on the idea of presenting the label as an outlet for a wide and varied source of eclectic music forms. The superstar DJ, producer and label owner has an act, Crash Land, steeped in the hip hop tradition. The official Press Release for the self titled release, out now, asks 4 simple questions: Who are they, where do they come from, what do they want with us, and where are they going. Get the concept? Are we to assume they are not from this planet? Well, the official music video tells a story of space exploration, alien planets, and destiny. The stripped down sound design built of low-end sounds and rhythms provides a spacey atmospheric launch pad for the vocalist’s expert lyrical delivery. Follow the story and embrace the mystery behind Crash Land and the what their future holds.

Daniel Wanrooy is one of Holland’s most active producers working today. His latest project brings him back to the label Dancepush and this time with label mate and Califorinia based singer songwriter Cuesta Loeb collaborating on the new song. Wanrooy continues to impress me with his productions and with this latest, highly polished, bright and bouncy house pop infused track, it definitely gives one what one would expect in a Wanrooy production. Cuesta Loeb gives the track a lush gorgeous voicing fitting so perfectly with the song’s house groove, layered melodic keys, driving bass and interchanging featured instrumentation show off the skills of both these talent songwriters. The synergy and energy demonstrated in the song and the way it makes you feel is nothing short of high positivity, possibilities and some will even feel the similarities of the story told in "All My Life."

DIRTY AUDIO & JUPE DOWN UNDER SELF RELEASED

FELIX CARTAL GET WHAT YOU GIVE ENHANCED MUSIC





Riding high on the back of recent high profile collaborations with and remixes for Yellow Claw, Afrojack, and Max Styler. Dirty Audio returns with a free track’ titled 'Down Under.' This latest self released track which he produced with a teenage phenom going by the name of Jupe has a backstory that goes like this. While on tour in Australia, Dirty Audio is supporting KRNE & Jupe in his sets. Jupe received word of the support and sent over an idea that shortly developed in to a collaborative production that is aptly titled 'Down Under.' Fans of Dirty Audio will be treated to some hardcore DnB sounds, distorted vocals, syncopated rhythms, and odd time signatures along with some really clever usage of electronics. However, the interweaving upper register keyboard work and melody really pulls it all together presenting a glorious adventurous 3 minutes of Dirty Audio madness.

Almost 20 years on, The New Radicals worldwide smash hit 'You Get What You Give' gets a re-interpretation from Felix Cartal. Breathing fresh life into the classic pop song exquisitely, Cartal’s golden touch demonstrates reverence and love, all the while keeping true to the message and melodic structure of the original. This stylish version for Enhanced Music delivers on all fronts with heavy, bold, bouncy dance rhythms and that insanely hooky melody bringing you in to the realm of Cartal’s vision of presenting his modern styling’s to the song. Granted 'Get What You Give' was created to make people feel good and to fill dance floors, I would say, that as soon a the needle hits the groove, you do feel good and should be a summer staple on the festival and club circuit. Gregg Alexander should be proud and honored as Felix has given the classic a new life.

JES CARRY ME AWAY MAGIK MUZIK

MARKUS SCHULZ MOTA MOTA COLDHARBOUR RECORDS





For those who have experienced snow delays at airports, myself included, it can cause one to daydream, cuss and curse , sleep, whatever. California based singer/songwriter JES took advantage of such an inconvenience and let her imagination run wild with thoughts of love when she wrote her latest single 'Carry Me Away' on her iPhone while stuck at JFK Airport. Game Chasers return to collaborate and just like their previous Grammy Nominated track with JES, 'Hold On,' and the end result are two spectacular mixes. Alongside the electronic sounds and dance rhythms there is a slick saxophone line which adds a contemporary feel to the production. The second mix is a bit deeper in the feel than the original, with the lower end instruments more out front with JES. And as an added treat, Markus Schulz gives the song a gigantic boost in sound with his skilled wizardry.

'Mota-Mota' is a triumphant production from Markus Schulz, Dakota and Koen Groeneveld that all Techo fans should rejoice in as the original 3 minute 25 second mix gives the listener dark underlying low end bass rhythms, bass drum kicks, clicks, a futuristic melody with a distorted feel that drives the building tempos and the anticipation of monstrous drops evolving to rolling bass rhythms that get you moving. The real deal of this single is the 8 minute 15 second extended mix. It features all the ingredients heard in the original mix, bringing you in to the main synth melody around the 3 minute mark, and then the drop at the half way point is awesome bringing back in the rolling bass, clicks, snare drum and high hat cymbal sound effects and a pulsating bass drum kick beat taking you back to the theme of 'MotaMota.' Good stuff.

NO WAY BACK MINUTE ENHANCED MUSIC

WILL CLARKE & BOT TECHNO (NOT TECHNO) FOOD MUSIC





Anthony Pisano aka No Way Back is a Los Angeles based producer whose productions meld house, hip hop and soul in to songs that have caused big time names like Tiësto and Don Diablo among others to chime in with positive praise and support. His latest project, 'Minute' on Enhanced Music features L.A. vocalist Sophia Black and she is the perfect choice to lay down the vocals on No Way Back’s highly polished composition. Finger snaps and claps, bouncy bass, piano, electro effects and Black’s phrasing hooks you in right out the gate. The track gives off feelings of warm, fuzzy, bright and sunny vibes of positivity. The production has such high cross-over appeal to Pop fans and those of Sophia’s combined with the song writing of Pisano prove these two are equally deserving of wider recognition. Jump in and check it out for youself.

Only a few weeks in to their official Food Music release, "Techno (not techno)" Will Clarke and BOT have already seen full support coming from the likes of Danny Howard, whom, while filling in for Annie Mac at BBC Radio, first premiered the track and instantly generated international buzz. Tastemakers take note, this track is built for longevity and widespread reach among Will Clarke and Techno fans featuring tripped out vocals, thumping low end beats and synths that are both simplistic and minimalist. The B-side, 'L’il Miami' comes in at a slightly quicker pace with some very interesting and suggestive vocal deliveries and effects. Bouncy, yet nightmarish bass sound, claps and other electro percussion sounds builds a groove that proves the title precisely, "Techno (not techno)." Will Clarke & BOT’s just delivered some primo Techno, and something else equally special, that will appeal to all.

ROBERT MILES 1969-2017

Robert Miles, the Swiss-born Italian disc jockey and producer whose best-known track was the 1995 international club hit 'Children,' died early Wednesday, May 10, 2017, after a short illness on the island of Ibiza, Spain. He was 47. The piano-infused instrumental rose to No. 1 in six countries: Switzerland, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, and Sweden. In the U.K., the track reached No. 2, but it did not make the top20 in the U.S. and Canada, stopping short at No. 21. The tune appeared on Miles' 1996 platinumselling "Dreamland" album. Also in 1996, Miles followed up with the single 'Fable,' which went to No. 1 in Italy and reached the top 10 in four other countries. In 1997, Miles released another single, 'Freedom,' which featured the vocals of Kathy Sledge from the U.S. vocal group Sister Sledge of 'We Are Family' fame. 'Freedom,' from his second album, "23am," was a top-20 dance hit in Finland, Italy, and the U.K., but none of Miles' follow-ups fared as well as 'Children,' which has sold more than 5 million copies globally. Miles was born Roberto Concina Nov. 3, 1969, to his Italian immigrant parents in Fleurier, Switzerland. He showed an early aptitude on the piano. His family moved to Italy during the 1970s. Miles began his DJ career in the mid-'80s. In 1997, Miles won a Brit Award for the best international breakthrough act. He went on to release four more studio albums as well as some remix records. His last album, "Th1rt3en," was issued in 2011.
