Beacon Life Be Challenged

Statistical Skittles

Our Year 5 boys demonstrated a variety of statistical skills in a functional way, whilst engaging in a Skittles Data Investigation during their Maths lessons.

Before they even opened their allocated pack of sweets, our boys had to estimate how many of each colour might be in each pack. Some of the boys had really close guesses! Once they got familiar with the data, they presented it by creating pictograms, bar graphs, tally charts and impressive pie charts. They agreed that line graphs wouldn't be appropriate in this instance, as they are better suited to present results observed over a period of time.

To top off the Maths investigation, our boys created beautiful, colourful posters, showcasing their understanding of statistics. As a reward for their effort, they got to eat their data at the end of the lesson!

Shiplake Maths Competition

In January, six of our budding Mathematicians attended a Maths Competition at Shiplake College

All of the boys worked collaboratively and embraced every task with enthusiasm and perseverance. After a nail-biting sudden death question about capacity, The Beacon boys were declared winners for the second year in a row! A huge well done to all our boys for an amazing afternoon of Maths.

UKMT Maths Challenge

Our Beacon Mathematicians were given the chance, following fantastic results in the UKMT Intermediate Challenge, to sit the Grey Kangaroo UKMT Challenge. The Grey Kangaroo Challenge is aimed towards highachieving 16-year-olds in Year 10 and Year 11, so for some of our boys to have an opportunity to participate was fantastic. We scored very highly indeed with three elite Mathematicians gaining a Merit certificate each.

Well done to Alex T (Year 7), Kevin Z (Year 7) and Shay N (Year 5).

Rotary Technology Tournament 2023

The Beacon boys were victorious in winning the Rotary Technology Tournament 2023!

Two teams of our boys from Years 5 to 8 participated, competing against several other schools in the local area. Each team had to solve the same interactive technology-based task requiring participants to design, develop and build a solution with the materials supplied.

Both of our Beacon teams succeeded in completing the task, with one of our teams winning the foundation award for their age group in the tournament overall!

Scholarship Success

We are thrilled that so many of our Beacon boys have been awarded superb Scholarships and Exhibitions by their future senior schools. These are fantastic achievements in what is an increasingly competitive process.
