The problem

Accounting Vera Shamon

The biggest problem that the people of Sierra Madre have is on out-of-control government that is constantly working on every way that they can to enslave the people and private property. They do so at the neglect of the public areas that they are supposed to maintain and serve the people. They have sublet the maintenance of the parks and swimming pool They have also stopped the Dial-a ¬Ride service and all the City equipment is going to waste or has already been destroyed. The City has 64 bookkeeping accounts which include all of the volunteer activities that the City has taken over. If they gave half of those accounts back to the people, they could reduce some of the overhead work and taxpayer expense. If they did their own maintenance of the parks, pool and Diala-Ride, they could likewise reduce the spending of these items. The City should also see how many sections of the ordinances that can repeal

Dear Editor: Your April 17 issue had an article on Pasadena Armenian Genocide Memorial to be built in Memorial Park. As a youth I remember playing in this park and it was erected as a patriotic park to honor US war veterans-especially World War 1. It’s difficult to believe this park will be used to memorialize a foreign genocide that occurred in Turkey. Maybe

that mandate control of private property. Start with the so-called "street trees", which belong to the property owner and strip out all the mandatory requirements and make them voluntary. It starts with all the fees that are charged, regulations on the size of homes that the owner can build, their battle against twostory houses and deny other items that they can think of in order to prevent the owner from doing what they want to build on their property. Ask any realtor and they will tell you that the more square footage the home has, the more it will sell for. Haven't we had large two-story homes in town for more than fifty years? They lose sight that the more a home sells for the more money the City receives in property taxes. This says nothing about the penalties that the city has imposed on the use of water, which likewise reduces their income. If the City would only focus on doing their job themselves and quit all the conversation of selling the Water

the city should build a memorial to Japanese Americans living in Pasadena who were shipped to Gila River, Arizona US prison camps in April 1942 because of Pearl Harbor. Ironically sons of these prisoners were serving in the US Army in the Pacific and European war zones. At least Pasadena should have honored the Japanese American Medal of Honor winner in Me-

Department, or the sewer or the Police Department and the Fire Department, then people could also reduce the overhead personnel and generally downsize the government. They should table the discussion of gray-water and the fees on fireworks. Perhaps the only thing that the people can hope for is to see a complete change of attitude with the election of these new council persons. It took years for the government to get in this shape and it will be no easy job to unravel their grip on the people and for them to reduce their foolish spending and spend the revenue to properly maintain property of the public sector. This goes far beyond simply fixing the leaking water mains or sewers and this discussion only scratches the surface of what needs correcting. The job is massive and it will require a strong back and constant attention. Hopefully, the new electors will start the change as they are sworn in and seated. Sierra Madre Watchman

morial Park which as mentioned was for American war veterans. It should also be mentioned the memorial Pasadena should erect for the patriotic Japanese American war veterans who died while their parents were in US prison camps. Pasadena city council should reconsider building a memorial for a foreign country. Yours truly, Calvin Tajima, Altadena
