BY SHEL SEGAL With a $10 million offer recently rejected by the Mater Dolorosa Passionist Retreat Center to prevent the sale and development of some of the center’s open space in northern Sierra Madre, a spokesman for the passionists said it was for good reason. In light of the severe drought conditions in California, the Arcadia Unified School District will no longer allow its schools and clubs to hold community car wash fundraisers with the ban having started on Monday, which was Earth Day. While many of these car washes serve as significant fundraisers to support different schools and their clubs, the district’s mission of being environmentally conscious will take priority during California’s drought, said Joel Shawn, district superintendent. “We want to continue to be leaders in this community and globally,” Shawn said.
