Science meets Ecology meets Art If you’ve been wandering along the beaches of the Bay at low tide, you may have spotted a series of decorative tiles appearing on the sea walls; some highly decorative, some more natural-looking, and others just squares of barnacle-free concrete. Actually, they are the first stages of an exciting experiment in marine biodiversity and coastal resilience.

Island organisations from The Bay area have been awarded a Partnership Grant by the Royal Society, a fellowship of the world's most eminent scientists. Sandown Bay Academy, Eccleston George and Arc Consulting are working together on a programme of experimental science covered by the STEM subjects - science, technology, engineering, maths - in which art is also playing an essential role.

The project is part of a concept called Artecology, being developed by Eccleston George and Arc, and it introduces students to the notion and the practice of making new textures and materials for the marine environment. The five miles of Bay coastline have recently become a focus of innovation in the fields of asset resilience (making structures last longer by ‘bioarmouring’ them) and intertidal colonisation (enhancing biodiversity on sea defences).

Andy Green, Key Stage 3 Director at Sandown Bay Academy said: “The year 7, 8 and 9 students from Sandown Bay Academy taking part in the Artecology project have risen to the complex set of challenges set by the project brief.” Nigel George, founder of Eccleston George Public Artists, added: “I really love the students‘ scientific inquisitiveness and the way they've used their wonderful creativity in the quest for answers to the real world problems we’ve presented to them.”

Meet local artists at Arts Open Studios The Isle of Wight Arts Open Studios 2016 will take place across the Island from July 15th to 25th. Artists invite you to meet them and talk about their work, while offering the chance to buy unique and affordable art.

Admission is free with opening from 10am to 5pm, but opening dates may vary.

Across South Wight, including Ventnor and Sandown areas, you can visit venues such as Ventnor Botanic Gardens, Ventnor Central, Holliers Farm Arts Centre, as well as small groups and solo artists. Yearbooks allow you to make your own art trail, and are obtained from Red Funnel, Tourist Information points, libraries, National Trust and English Heritage properties, galleries, framers and art shops. Plenty for all to see and do at Chale Festival Chale’s annual village festival takes place on Sunday July 17th on Chale Green from 1.30 p.m. to 4.00 p.m.

Introducing Peter White, the new editor of the Beacon Experienced journalist Peter White is the new editor of the Beacon magazine, and admits he is relishing the prospect of this latest challenge.

Although Peter is perhaps best known as a football reporter for national newspapers, he also has a wealth of experience writing features on Isle of Wight personalities and characters, including the likes of actors Celia Imrie and Melvyn Hayes, and former MPs Virginia Bottomley and Norman Fowler, as well as naturalist Chris Packham and the multi-talented Alan Titchmarsh.

He said: “I have also been fortunate enough to interview many other amazing Island people, including our Lord Lieutenant Maj.Gen. Martin White, the last five Isle of Wight High Sheriffs, and unsung heroes such as ex-military personnel, charity workers, key hospital staff and members of the farming community, who have all had wonderful tales to tell.”

Peter has also interviewed a number of artists who have appeared at the Isle of Wight Festival, Bestival or at Osborne concerts, including the Island’s own Mark King from Level 42, John Taylor of Duran Duran, Steve Harley, Simple Minds lead singer Jim Kerr, Mel C from the Spice Girls and Little Mix’s Perrie Edwards to name just a few.

Peter is originally from Warwickshire and began his journalistic career in the Midlands, working first in Banbury, and then for the Coventry Evening Telegraph, the Wolverhampton Express and Star, the Birmingham Evening Mail, and as chief reporter for the Saturday evening football paper, the Sports Argus.

I have been very fortunate to have interviewed so many interesting people on the Island.

It was while he was working in the Midlands that he covered many big sporting events, including Wimbledon, Test cricket, the 1986 World Cup finals in Mexico and the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. He said: “A lot of people ask me what is the most memorable football

match I’ve ever covered. I have to say it was England v Argentina in Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium in ’86, when Diego Maradona scored his infamous ‘Hand of God’ goal, and then went on to score one of the best individual goals ever seen in World Cup game.

“In those days journalists often stayed in the same hotel as the team – no chance these days – and I was fortunate enough to be with England in the Mexican city of Monterrey for their group matches. The late Bobby Robson was England’s manager, and he was very media friendly, and a pleasure to work with. He was devastated when England were knocked out by Argentina, because he genuinely thought we were going to win the World Cup again that year.”

After seven years as Midlands football correspondent for the Sun newspaper, he went freelance, and subsequently moved to the Island with his late wife Trish and son Jamie in 1999.

Since then he has combined covering Southampton, Portsmouth and Bournemouth football clubs for a variety of national and Sunday newspapers, with feature writing on the Island. He was editor of an Island lifestyle magazine for four years, and also wrote articles for another Island publication before accepting the offer to become editor of the Beacon.

Peter added: “I have been very fortunate that I have already met and interviewed so many interesting people here on the Island. But there are still many more who I would like to talk to so I can give Beacon readers an insight into their lives.”

Peter recalled: “The Seoul Olympics are perhaps best remembered for the disqualification of Canadian drugs cheat Ben Johnson in the 100 metres final. I was in the stadium to watch the race, and then a few of us went out for a drink or two!

“Just as we returned to the Press Village in the early hours, news broke that Johnson had been sent packing, so we were up all night trying to track him down in South Korea while he had already been sent home in disgrace.”

The Railway Folk are once again set to ‘take over’ the running of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway - and Dusty the Station Master is very concerned!

It’s the height of summer and news is breaking that from July 31st to August 2nd a train load of farmyard animals will be breaking down just outside Havenstreet. The Railway Folk have decided to come to the rescue and are busily setting up home for them on the field. But they are novices at this and need your help!

To complete your day out, around the station there will be all sorts of fun and activities for families to enjoy, including steam train rides, with a special two-train service in operation; fun with Kidsrome Mobile Petting Farm; learn how to milk Mavis the Cow; children’s tractor rides; and picnic areas. A good selection of refreshments will also be available.

While Mrs. Cumberpatch is hastily knitting covers for the goats’ horns, Max and Penny are getting to grips with learning to milk Mavis the Cow. Distraught Dusty is trying to keep the ducks in a row, Tamp is conversing with the llamas and Jenny is cleaning up the straw. To his delight Old George the Gardener is happily clearing out the animals and depositing the contents of his wheelbarrow on his prize roses.

Shanklin Town Mayor Cllr John Gilbey I would like to congratulate Shanklin Town Brass Band for being awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in the year of the Queen’s 90th birthday.

This national recognition reflects the hard work, dedication and commitment of Malcolm and Karen Lewis, and all those involved with the Band since its inception. I’ve been privileged to attend several concerts at Shanklin Theatre and Rylstone Gardens, and not only is this Award truly merited for their musical standards, it also recognises the contribution they have made to the development of young musicians, and the work they have put into the Chalet, saving it from potential demolition. * Shanklin has received a National Seaside Award. Our beaches were one of only four on the Island to receive this accolade, reflecting

the commitment the Town Council has given to funding bins on the beach; first aid equipment and radios to all Longshoremen; helping with litter picks on the beach and providing a defibrillator and training for emergencies. The funding has also enabled improved signage and information to tourists, repair to shelters and Osborne Steps in partnership with Island Roads, plus a range of other initiatives. * I had the pleasure of presenting the trophies at Shanklin Rowing Regatta, a

successful event with many mainland clubs competing. A big thank you to Terry Nigh, Ian Thomas and all the volunteers at the club who put a lot of time and effort into organising the event every year. * Congratulations to Shanklin athlete Jess Andrews, and her proud family, on her success on being selected for the Team GB squad going to the Rio Olympics, representing the country in the 10,000 meters: I am sure we will all be cheering her on.

Community spirit shines through The invitation from BBC South Today for Ventnor to be the first in its series of programmes celebrating community spirit gave the town an excellent opportunity to showcase its amazing range of voluntary organisations. Although we only had three weeks’ notice of their visit, 55 organisations set out their stalls on the Salisbury Garden Green (below) for a wonderful afternoon and early evening, filmed live in 20 minutes of the South Today 6.30pm news slot.

The final Accounts for our 2015/16 financial year showed Income £399,641. Of that, the Precept contributed £254,101 (64% of total spend), Salisbury Gardens £79,329 (20%) and grants £47,733 (12%).

Expenditure came to £378,972, £20,669 less than the year’s income.

Overhead costs totalled £91,245 (24%) including salary costs of £65,312 (17% of total turnover).

Expenditure on the parts of the town’s infrastructure the Town Council is now responsible for totalled £69,065 (18%) and a range of projects cost £140,060 (37%) with Salisbury Gardens’ expenditure at £57,721 (15%).

Library plans move forward Our hope of relocating the town’s Library to the town centre with parking facilities took a major step forward last month.

Mayor re-appointed The Town Council’s annual meeting re-appointed Councillor Jason Mack as Town Mayor for the third year in succession and Councillor Leigh Geddes as Deputy Town Mayor.

The Isle of Wight Council agreed to appoint Spectrum Housing Group as the Special Purchaser for the old Youth Centre site with plans for its replacement as 12 one-bedroom flats over three floors with the Library occupying the ground floor.

The Festival, which has free entry apart from the two evenings of stage acts, costs around £90,000 to put on each year, but generates only £60,000 revenue, through car parking charges, programme sales, draw tickets and stall pitch fees.

That leaves a massive £30,000 shortfall, which has previously been offset by sponsorship. Although dates have already been provisionally pencilled in for 2017, time is running out to find the finances to ensure in goes ahead.

Debbie Cotton, chair of the Old Gaffers organising committee for the past 14 years, explained: “Unfortunately there is now a big financial gap that needs filling, and we are hoping that sponsors will come forward and see this as a fantastic opportunity to advertise their businesses.”

ALAN STROUD’S ISLAND STORY

Raising a glass in memory of Tom, old Albert…and all!

Over the decades the Island has had its share of fine breweries, and at one time Mew Langton of Newport was arguably the largest and most successful of them. Many will remember their distinctive red and brown signs swinging from posts outside pubs in towns and villages across the Island, and the promising smell of hops that hung over Newport town on brewing days.

Island Story has briefly featured Mew’s before, but this time the tale is told by someone who actually worked there, Mike Millidge of Newport, now in his very youthful eighties.

Mike worked for Mew’s and its successors for over 40 years on the two-acre brewery site where St Cross Court and Lidl now stand. He recalled: “I went to work for Mew Langton when I left school in 1951. I started on the first Monday in April in the order office in Crocker Street.

“I'd see Joe Mew most days. He lived down by the brewery in St Cross House which are offices now, and it's got the wall scalloped out to allow lorries from Fisk and Fisher, which were in

St Cross Mill then, to go by. When I was in the order office we had to take the pub orders up to Joe Mew every morning.

He went through them all, one after the other, and he'd tap one of the entries for one of the pubs and say, ‘he hasn't had any mild ale for two weeks’.

“He had a memory like an elephant. Joe's cousin, Colonel Mew, lived at Kingston Manor.

Colonel Mew was the architect on the building side and Joe did the brewing side.”

Times were certainly different in those days.

Mike recalls how the words 'morning brew' took on a whole different meaning at Mew Langton. He said: “Initially when I went there, at 10 o'clock each morning we had a ‘beer break’. You went to the restroom and instead of tea you had a pint of beer. We had a nine gallon cask in a cupboard and had a beer break in the morning and a tea break in the afternoon.

“I wasn't old enough at the beginning so I had to have lemonade but the older ones would have a pint of beer and some would go and

get a second one. If the cask got empty, you went down into the cellars and got another one! When the new drink laws came in during the 1960s, and you couldn't drink and drive, they stopped drinking at work and then we had an allowance of four dozen cans of beer a month or six dozen minerals. All the workers got that allowance, but the bosses could have as much as they liked. The draymen used to have plenty of pints as they went round delivering to the pubs.

“One of the drivers said to me ‘Oh, we probably have 12 pints a day’. I never heard of it causing an accident though.

Mind you, there wasn't the traffic then and of course, in the horse-drawn days the horse would know its way back! I remember the last horse-drawn cart. When I was at the Grammar School, on the corner of Lugley Street, old Albert Richards used to come along with Tom the horse and deliver to the Freemasons on the corner.

“We used to lean out and shout at him and he would wave his whip at us. Tom was the last horse, in about 1948. He went to the Ningwood retirement home for horses and we used to send a bushel of brewer's grain out for him.”

Mike saw a lot of changes in his time at Mew’s. It remained a family business until 1965 when the brewery and its 140 pubs were sold to Romsey brewer Strong’s for £1.5million. In the name of rationalisation, Strong’s closed the brewery - the last pint was brewed in 1969 - and shortly afterwards, Strong’s were taken over by Whitbread, whose first act was to close nearly 50 of the Island’s smaller pubs.

The brewery stood empty for years until one Sunday afternoon in October, 1979 when it mysteriously caught fire and was destroyed in less than an hour. The heat from the flames was so intense that even on that cold autumn afternoon it could be felt on Medina Way.

It was the biggest fire in Newport in living memory and a sad end to a building that could still be here today. The cause of the fire was unknown but children who were using the brewery as a play area were the main suspects. The demolition men were soon at work and the site was transformed into the St Cross Court sheltered housing complex and the adjacent yard into what is now the Lidl store.

Tales from the Coppice

Come July, the wood is teeming with animals and plants all busy with the business of growing, reproducing or otherwise taking advantage of the long and warmer days. As well as the very special hazel dormouse and red squirrel, the coppice is also home to many other animals and birds. This inquisitive fox inspected a camera I had set up in a quiet spot.

As the summer progresses and the days get hotter, some of the woodland wildlife retreats into damper and cooler quarters.

I found these two amphibians sitting together under a rotting birch log. Looking more closely, I realised that the shinier one on the left was a frog, but the warty one on the right was a toad. I’d never seen both species sharing the same space before.

Reading up on the habits of frogs and toads, it seems that, although they have been witnessed mating, such a union is sterile with no chance of baby togs or froads. Great camouflage though!

Mould SlimeMould Slime

Among the living things less commonly seen, on a dead hazel trunk that had fallen across one of the tracks I found this strange white blob. It was soft and spongy, like a sticky marshmallow and about four inches in diameter. It’s a ‘slime mould’, which isn’t an animal or a plant, but something akin to an amoeba that moves very slowly looking for bacteria, fungi or decaying organic material to consume.

I ended up with a pile of ash and an amount of charcoal sufficient only to barbecue a couple of chipolatas. Several burns later (and few prayers to Saint Alexander, the patron saint of charcoal burners), I’m now getting better results.

Success is all down to getting the kiln up to the correct temperature and achieving a delicate balance of burning by adjusting the amount of oxygen entering the kiln. My small kiln takes about six hours to complete the burn, but then needs a day or so to cool down before I can open the lid to inspect the results.

The large earth covered ‘clamp’ kilns of yesteryear took the best part of a week to complete the process and required the charcoal burner to watch the kiln constantly.

This required him to live in the woodlands, places that have been considered magical or sacred for thousands of years.

or that buzz past the ears in the areas where the new hazel shoots are bursting skywards from the stools coppiced last winter.

The tops of the tallest trees reach up into the sky like a collection of spires that complete the architecture of this woodland cathedral. Spending a large proportion of my time in the wood, I’ve come to realise that in loving being among the trees, loving the way being in the wood restores my mind and body and loving the joy of sharing it with others, I’ve found a degree of inner peace that tempers the rest of whatever life might throw in my direction.

And perhaps for me, that’s what is sacred about this place.

Clever Camouflage

Charcoal Kiln

Charcoal burning has been an ancient craft of the woodlands ever since man discovered how to smelt metal. Charcoal is obtained by burning wood very slowly in a kiln in order to drive off water and other compounds whilst restricting the amount of oxygen as the burning is taking place.

Rather than leaving a pile of ash, this process results in lumps of charcoal. At least that’s the theory. I’m still very much a novice and the results of my first charcoal burn two years ago were somewhat mixed.

We still ‘touch wood’ to ward off bad luck; an echo of the time when guardian spirits were thought to live in trees. Before felling, many woodsmen will still thank a tree for what it will provide. In high summer, going through the gate into the wood and into the cool shade under the leafy roof provides a sensation very much akin to that felt on entering an old country church and the direct heat of the sun is off the skin. The sunlight illuminating the leaves could be stained glass windows in shades of green.

The oldest trees provide the pillars that look like they’re holding up a roof of living wood either side of the tracks that are the cloisters of the coppice. The smell of honeysuckle flowers with hint of woodsmoke are the wafts of incense, the tall foxgloves are the alter candles and the heavenly chorus is of course provided by any number of songbirds among the branches, other creatures that rustle around in the leaf litter

LEGAL & Financial Total Landlord net property wealth reportedly exceeded £1,077trillion last year with mortgaged owner-occupiers holding £1,067trillion. Apparently the total value of Britain’s housing stock passed the £6trillion mark in 2015.

So with near double digit house price increases for the last three years for many in the London area, some may struggle to find much sympathy for the London buy-to-let landlords, but it is worth taking a look at the recent changes in legalisation and the changes still to come.

• The Immigration Act 2014 prohibits private residential landlords from renting to tenants without a right to stay in the country.

• Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Regulations require each storey to have a smoke alarm and a carbon monoxide detector in a room that has a solid fuel burning appliance.

• Gas Safe Certificate must be obtained annually by the Landlord. As of October 1st, 2015 if none exists then a landlord cannot use the shorthold ground for re-possession.

• Stamp Duty Land Tax changes last April introduced swingeing increases. In essence there is an additional 3% on the whole purchase price of a second home. The rules are strict with some perverse consequences so be alert should you already own a property globally. The duty on a £250,000 property was £2,500 and is now £10,000.

Yet to come: as of April 2017 the Chancellor will tax landlords on their turnover instead of net profit. This will be introduced in stages but will be in full force in 2020 and as a worked example: A higher rate tax payer receiving rent of £10,000 per annum and paying mortgage interest of £8,000 a year would have paid tax on the profit of £2,000, so that would be £800. By 2020, the tax changes will require

the tax to be on the turnover. So that will be £4,000, less an allowance of 20% which is designed to ensure standard rate taxpayers are not penalised.

The higher rate tax payer will then have a bill of £3,200 to be paid from his profit of £2,000. So a £1,200 profit has turned into a £1,200 loss!

Add to this, the 10% ‘wear and tear’ allowance has been removed and replaced so that Landlords can now only deduct for expenses actually incurred.

If you are starting to think it cannot all be bad as the Chancellor has announced an Inheritance Tax allowance of £1million for your mansion then think again. To reach £1million you have to use both your own £325,000 tax allowance and your spouse allowance of £325,000!

Then it is only available to linear descendants and being phased in gradually to 2021.

The above is a general indication from an assessment of current announcements. Tax rules are liable to change without notice and advice from an accountant is essential.
