Once you’ve accepted an offer, the support doesn’t stop, we’re on hand to assist with any problems or questions.

To contact Mark or Tristan for a free, no obligation valuation, head to www. purplebricks.com and find out why we’re the estate agent you can love.

The Beacon enjoyed a Royal visit recently when Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, called into our office. He asked about the magazine’s production and was particularly interested in its content, even asking how we managed to change the images in our popular ‘Spot the Differences’ competiton.

By Peter White Many Island businesses make generous donations to local charities each year. But with companies often receiving numerous requests for funding, the whole process can be extremely time consuming. That is why successful Island businessman Geoff Underwood decided to start a Foundation that focuses on working with companies to help them manage their charitable giving far more easily. Geoff, managing director of Island-based Inflight Peripherals Ltd (IFPL), is founder and chairman of WightAID, which allows businesses to make one donation to the Foundation, instead of responding to, and administering dozens of requests. He first came up with the idea of WightAID a couple of years ago, and after overcoming several hurdles, he and his fellow Trustees have already recruited a number of influential Island companies to join the scheme. At the recent launch of WightAID, several charities and good causes were the first to receive financial assistance.

Geoff explained: “As my company has grown, the amount of money we can give to charities has grown as well. But with that, the administration required to make those donations went through the roof. Many of the smaller charities and good causes are not looking for a lot of money, but that meant we could often end up with 20 or 30 applying for funds. “So I wanted to start a Foundation that would allow companies to write just one cheque, rather than several, and allow the Foundation to distribute the funds that remain wholly on the Island. I didn’t want to just invest any money and use the interest, but instead felt we should distribute everything we receive, while keeping running costs to an absolute minimum. “I ran the idea of WightAID past a few business friends and colleagues, and they liked it, so over the last six months we have really been able to push ahead with it. The whole idea is to make giving money to local charities and good causes as simple as possible.”

If we can make WightAID big enough, then we may be able to support some of the larger charities in the future Geoff continued: “If some companies have designated charities each year, and that is how they like to work, that is fine by me. All we are trying to do is to encourage businesses to put maybe even more money in the pot for good causes.” WightAID is headed by Geoff (above, third left) with Steve Porter, Nick Hessey, Sue Lucas, Brian Marriott, Claire Willis, and Rob Da Bank making up the board of Trustees. They currently meet 10 times a year to consider applications and distribute funds, and generally focus on the Island’s smaller charities, as opposed to some of the bigger ones that already have their own marketing and fund-raising team. But Geoff points out: “If we can make WightAID big enough, then we may be able to support some of the larger charities in the future. But for the time being the aim is to help some of the smaller guys who know that even a few hundred pounds can be a tremendous help. During the first year we are looking to distribute around £150,000 to various causes, and it would be great if we could eventually take that figure up to around £250,000 a year.” Geoff added: “We have tried to keep the forms simple, but I would ask anyone just to fill it in the best they can, and get it to us, and then we can follow it up.” WightAID can also be found on Facebook and Twitter.

INTERVIEW

Life in the slow lane for speed ace Chris By Peter White

B

Chris Atkinson is used to living life in the fast lane. Over the years he has driven his Surtees Formula 5000 racing car and his Piper Sports car around circuits in Britain and abroad at speeds of up to 200mph.

ut now he is busily preparing himself for a whole new challenge - driving in the annual London to Brighton Rally in a car that is 113 years old, has a six brake horse power engine, and a top speed of just 23mph. He smiled: “It’s certainly going to be interesting, and very different. I shall be driving, and my dad Ken will be navigator for the first half of the journey, then a friend, who introduced me to racing, will help out. I always fancied taking part in the London to Brighton Rally as a passenger, then the opportunity came up to buy this car only a few months ago. We are so looking forward to it, and it’s not about winning, but the challenge of trying to complete the route.” The vintage 1903 French De Dion Bouton car has wooden wheels and spokes, a

6

combined foot and hand brake, two throttles, two gears but no reverse. So if Chris wants to move backwards, he has to hop off and push it! It has a horn as well as a bell to warn of its oncoming, and if it is still running when it gets dark, it’s down to gas lights to guide the way. The Rally journey is 60 miles, with several stops on the way, but if Chris happens to forget to use the oil plunger every 20 miles to keep the engine and gear box lubricated, it will seize up, as it did the last time the vintage beauty undertook the journey with its previous owner. The car, which is started with a handle, and still has some of the original leather seating, could not be further away from the two magnificent, high-powered historic sports cars that Chris normally drives around famous circuits that include

Silverstone, Brands Hatch and Oulton Park, as well as many of the top European tracks. A former tyre fitter, who was born on the Island and now lives in Shanklin, Chris admits he has always been a frustrated racing driver, who would have loved the money to compete seriously. He said: “I have always loved cars and motor bikes. My first car was an historic Formula Ford, and my first competition car was a Ford Escort when I was about 24. “I soon realised you need a lot of money to compete seriously, and if you’re not careful it can run away with you. But at least the two historic cars I have continue to go up in value, but that only pays for what I spend on them, because they take a lot of looking after. You have to be a mechanic as well as a driver, and I love doing both.”

The 1971 500 bhp Surtees TS8 is a Formula 5000, with a fascinating history, as Chris explained. He said: “It was built in the John Surtees factory, John of course being the only person to win the world title on a motor cycle and in a Formula one car, before going on to manufacture cars. “This car was originally driven by the famous motor cycle racer Mike Hailwood, regarded as one of the best of all time, who sadly died in a road accident in 1981. The first time he drove this car in 1971, he won in it, and came second overall in the Formula 5000 series that year.

into an historic Formula One racing car. But the engine conversion alone would probably cost around £100,000! “It is off to New Zealand in a container shortly, which will take eight weeks, then I shall follow it over, and race in two meetings, and in a hill climb over there in late January or February.”

“It is a very competitive car, with a top speed of around 200mph, and I’ve won my class in it for the last two years. The engine has to be re-built every 3,000 miles, and the tyres usually last me a season. I could put a different engine in it, and convert it

The stunning Piper 1965 - nicknamed Billy - was the forerunner to the TVR, was acquired by Chris 10 years ago for £55,000. That too has nearly doubled in price since he bought it. He also has a 1953 trials car, which he keeps on the mainland. It is the type of vehicle that many Formula One drivers of that era used to race in the winter months to keep in trim for the demanding summer series of events. Chris has recently added to his collection by buying a Fiat Aardvark for the princely sum of £500, and when renovated, he might drive it in the occasionally hill climb. So it seems that although the London to Brighton Rally might be a gentle jaunt for Chris, his high-speed thrills will soon be back in top gear.

“I bought it three years ago for £55,000, and love racing in it, but because of its history we always volunteer it for any charity work that John Surtees does, if he wants to borrow it.

‘I could put a different engine in it, and convert it into an historic Formula One racing car’

Chris, who works as a mechanic on a number of other people’s car on the Historic Sports Car circuit to help pay the way, also competed in the famous Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2015. The High Sheriff waving the Isle of Wight Day flag with East Cowes Mayor, Margaret Webster

I would like to thank everyone on the Island who held events and supported the first Isle of Wight Day. I felt it was a very successful venture, probably better than I expected, but of course that is for everyone else to decide. It was very hastily put together, because I could not announce my plans until I was sworn in as High Sheriff in April. That is why my initial ambition was to cover the Island in bunting, but I never really expected so many events to be organised right across the Island. We had around 70 miles of bunting made, and every inch was used in one way or another. So I would urge everyone who still has the bunting to keep it until next year’s Isle of Wight Day, which will be held on September 23rd, and we will also be having a lot more bunting made for that day. My term of office as High Sheriff ends in April, but I have already made it known to my successor that I am happy to organise next year’s event - it is somerhing I couldn’t impose on forthcoming High Sheriffs! Now the inaugural Isle of Wight Day has been celebrated I hope the message has got across to everyone that it’s a day to showcase all that is good about the Island. There are so many wonderful organisations, businesses, schools and individuals, and it’s the opportunity to all come together for our own Christmas Day in September!

The People’s Parade that wound its way through Nerwport was very successful. I have never been in a parade before, and I was overwhelmed that in the High Street people were three and four deep watching it. When we arrived at St Georges Park everyone who was celebrating a birthday on day was wished ‘Happy Birthday’ and given a cake. The sailing relay from Yarmouth to Bembridge was also a magnificent event, and thanks to all the yacht clubs that took part. Overall, I was very satisfied at the way the day went - so here’s to an even bigger and better day in 2017!

NEWS FROM YOUR AREA - RYDE

Hopefully cameras will end speeding offenders A CCTV camera has finally been installed on North Walk and it should capture any late night speeding offenders doing their racing around Canoe Lake in the early hours. Since writing my last report on the anti-social driving issue I have been contacted by residents from East Hill Road, Marlborough Road, Esplanade and High Street all saying they too said they have been woken by noisy exhausts on motorcycles and cars as the speed by their homes in the early hours. I would urge all residents who live around Nelson Street area extending from the Esplanade to Park Road and George Street to Monkton Street to make sure their homes are secure at all times as we have had many burglaries recently. Police are fully aware and tell me they are working with all associated agencies to address the issue. If anyone sees or hears anything suspicious call the police immediately and report it. It was disappointing to see Ryde Arena locked by bailiffs after the Trust and employees put so much work and effort into keeping the place open for our community. The Ryde Business Association are planning a lantern lit seasonal Christmas Light switch on, to take place on Small Business Saturday, December 3rd; it will be a fun filled family event. Wayne Whittle, IW Councillor, Ryde North East

So important to retain these vital support services I visited the Adelaide with Cllr Stephens recently to meet Caroline, who has now become the manager, and to pass on my best wishes to Sue who is retiring. The Adelaide, along with Gouldings and Westminster House, plays an important role in the support services for the elderly and the vulnerable, and I will be voting for their retention in the forthcoming budget. When I was walking the Ward recently I noticed that a number of private properties are overgrown and causing obstruction to pathways, etc. A gentle reminder that it is the responsibility of the property owners to cutback any overgrowth obstruction to public right of ways that emanates from their property . The cemetery behind Westridge Garage, with an entrance in Great Preston Road, is private property and the slip road outside the gate is part of the property, and is the parking area for those visiting the cemetery. Would residents please bear this in mind and refrain from using the slip road for parking. Roger Whitby Smith, IW Councillor, Ryde East

Coffee morning for Lifeboats A Bembridge RNLI Lifeboat coffee morning will be held on Saturday, November 26th at Bembridge Village Hall from 10.0am to 12 noon. There will be sales of cakes, books, jewellery, bric-a-brac, and lifeboat gifts and souvenirs including Christmas cards, and copies of former coxswain Martin Woodward’s book ‘Bembridge Lifeboat Station – A Village Commitment’. All money raised will go directly towards supporting our lifeboats. It is now six years since the Tamar all-weather lifeboat Alfred Albert Williams arrived on station and took up service, and has responded to more than 150 service calls. One of the things the public visiting the station ask is ‘is it ever used – it looks brand new’? Its condition is reflected in the dedication of care and maintenance of the craft which is a credit to everyone involved. The offshore boathouse and RNLI shop will be open every day throughout November from 2.0 pm to 4.0pm.

Poppy volunteers needed Ryde branch of the Royal British Legion are looking for volunteers to help collect for their worthwhile cause. They need people who can spare an hour or two to take Poppy trays out onto the streets of Ryde to raise funds for those members of the services both past and present and their families who now need support. If you would like to support the Poppy appeal in this way please call Terry Clarkson on 07914 067709 or email terryyvonne@hotmail.co.uk

ISLAND STORY BY KEVIN SHAW

Tennyson at the hub of fashionable Freshwater Those who know Freshwater as it is today could easily be forgiven for failing to realise just how famous it once was. The sprawling village, with many of its old shops now gone, and encroached by ever more housing but few new attractions or amenities, is a far cry from its golden heyday.

Yet, if much of Freshwater has lost the quaint beauty it once enjoyed, and if even the naturally delightful bay is let down by some disappointingly ill-kept buildings, there was a time when not only was the then pretty village centre part of a vibrant local community, but Freshwater Bay area was seriously stylish and fashionable - THE place to be. Before the 19th century the Island was rarely a destination for travellers. Even though by 1800 its insular beauty was attracting artists like Samuel Howitt and Thomas Rowlandson, and had even drawn an early ‘tourist guide’ in John Albin’s ‘Companion to the Isle of Wight’, it was not widely popular. That, however, was soon to change. After the success in 1830 of Britain’s first steam-powered passenger railway, by the 1840s ‘Railway Mania’ saw lines rapidly spreading throughout the country. As they made their way to the south coast and brought the Island within 10

easy reach, this was a spur even to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as they sought a peaceful but accessible family retreat. Purchasing old Osborne House in 1844, their presence immediately raised the profile and popularity of the Island, but mostly around Cowes and in East Wight where connections were better. In contrast, the West Wight remained remote. The latter, though, was exactly what appealed to one the country’s favourite and most famous personalities a decade later. Made Poet Laureate in 1850, Alfred Tennyson was a highly popular literary figure by the time he first found Farringford three years later. Seeking tranquillity, and loving the setting and the views, the house was rented furnished, for two shillings per week (10p), and in 1856 bought outright, along with the farm and extensive land. If his wife Emily recorded how ‘two of the servants on seeing it burst into tears saying

Alfred Tennyson they could never live in such a lonely place’, it did not stay that way for long. With ever-growing fame – he had penned the powerfully populist ‘Charge of the Light Brigade’ in late 1854 – Tennyson was visited by a succession of well-known friends and admirers. Even on the day their own furniture arrived, Prince Albert, a fan of his verse and advocate of his Laureateship, arrived unannounced into the chaos, keen to see all round. Royalty apart, from the outset those who came to Farringford and Freshwater to see Tennyson included many of the great literary and artistic giants of the day. Notable among that entourage of poets, writers,

Freshwater was linked by train with Yarmouth and Newport, served by a handsome station artists and musicians was his friend George Frederick Watts, the painter and sculptor who produced several portraits of the great man. Watts later became a near neighbour and built The Briary for both himself and their close mutual friends, Henry and Sarah Prinsep. The latter, whose salon at Little Holland House in London was famed throughout the 1850s and 60s as the centre of a fashionable Bohemian artistic and literary circle, brought other significant connections. Among the gifted group of family and friends was Sarah’s brother, Charles Cameron and his wife Julia Margaret. The splendid Orchards family grocers, founded in 1865, survives By the late 1860s the numbers trying to glimpse or gawp at the great man, reluctantly drove him away in the summer months, and the Camerons moved back to India in 1875. But the Tennyson family remained dedicated to Farringford and Freshwater, even beyond Lord Alfred’s death in 1892, when the popularity of the area was still increasing. From 1889 until 1953 Freshwater was linked by train with Yarmouth and Newport, served by a handsome station at the eastern end of the main village. After Tennyson’s passing, the vibrant vogue of ‘fashionable’ Freshwater may have faded, but far into the 20th century Freshwater as a whole thrived. In the popular area between Farringford and the Bay, Hallam, Tennyson’s eldest son, in 1908 gave the land for the thatched St. Agnes’s church opposite the then Stark’s Hotel and a flourishing community of shops. Of these, the splendid Orchards family grocers, founded in 1865, survives, a delightful and still evocative reminder of bygone days. 11

THE JOHN HANNAM INTERVIEW

By popular demand...! This month John recalls his meetings with Island character Sylvia Jones uring the 26 years of my Isle of Wight Radio chat show, two people created the biggest impact - Cliff Richard and the late Military Road farmer Sylvia Jones. Sir Cliff was perhaps expected, but Sylvia, making her radio debut at the age of 74, brought in phone calls from all along the south coast, and she came back several times by popular demand. I still think of her every time I drive past Sutton Farm. She was always full of fun and once told me: "What I've got left is either wrinkled, shrivelled up or dropping off. When Sylvia was growing up on the Military Road it was narrow, with gates to unlock and her cows munched the grass verges. School meant a three mile walk each way to Shorwell. No trendy 4x4s in those days. After leaving school she worked on her parents’ Chine Farm for five shillings a week (25p today) and her keep. She smiled: ”We hardly went to the next village. For a special night out I would cycle to Shorwell, catch the Shotters' bus to Newport, have the best seat in the cinema, buy sweets and an ice cream and end up with a bag of chips – and still have a penny or two left over to buy clothes. " A tweed coat cost £1 and a dress was 2/6d (just over 12p). They were

happy times and we just kept working and had little time to think about anything else." During the Second World War they traded with the American troops in the holiday camp opposite. They also had to milk by hurricane lamp. Sylvia vividly remembered seeing German planes fly under the electric wire lines on the Military Road and throwing herself on the ground as the planes shot at anything that moved.

Sylvia working at Chine Farm She also revealed the local home guard were armed with just sticks and prongs. By necessity, and against her father's wishes, the family was forced to have German prisoners of war on their farm, due to a shortage of male labour. "They came in a lorry and we'd never seen a foreigner before and didn't know what to expect. We gave them a meal and thought ‘they look like us and eat like us’. They couldn't speak English and we couldn't speak German and we had to do everything by sign language. In the end

they stayed for two years,” she said. In the late 1930s James Mason starred in a movie called ‘I Met A Murderer’, which was filmed on the Island. They didn't have a huge budget and borrowed her father's Ford V8 for their police car and his farm horses for the on-screen chases. The exciting final scene was filmed at Whale Chine. James Mason, who stayed at their farmhouse, did invite them to a special late night screening at the Regent Cinema, Freshwater. When Sylvia and her husband, Mike ran Sutton Farm they had to carry the 10-gallon milk churns up the lane. Then it suddenly became heaven. He bought an old lorry for £75, with no sides nor a windscreen. On one occasion she spent 10 nights in a loose box with a sick cow. At that time, they could never have imagined dinosaur bones would be discovered on their land. Amazingly, later in life Sylvia actually left the Island for three holidays abroad. She didn't take many clothes but still filled a case, explaining: "I took my own grub. I didn't fancy all that oily stuff over there." I do miss Sylvia Jones, who died in 2000, but perhaps not her hard on-the-lips kisses wherever we met! *Listen out for her soon on a worldwide John Hannam Meets archive podcast.

The Nightingale on song A well-known Shanklin hotel is under new ownership and has been rebranded as The Nightingale Hotel, Bar and Restaurant. Formerly, Keats Green Hotel in Queens Road, Shanklin, the 31-bedroom Nightingale Hotel, including two suites, has recruited top chef Brad Roe (above left) and he and his kitchen team will be serving food not just for residents, but also for Island diners and visitors who are looking for high quality meals at competitive prices in a pleasing environment. Dino and Arina Joachim acquired the hotel last Decemeber and rebranded it as The Nightingale in July, after carrying out extensive refurbishments. The hotel restaurant has 40 covers, and highly-experienced chef Brad is relishing the challenge of preparing and supplying a wide range of dishes. Brad was originally from Basildon, Essex, but moved to the Isle of Wight with his family when he was 13, and attended the Isle of Wight College at 16 to train to become a chef. During his time at the College, he carried out work experience at a number of top functions, including at Buckingham Palace, Chelsea Flower Show, Royal Ascot and the Albert Hall. He moved to the United States to work at 18, having gained a Green Card scholarship, and was subsequently a chef in Florida, Los Angeles and Las Vegas, staying in the US for 20 years. He worked in The Peabody, a five-star hotel in Orlando, before moving to LA for six months to learn about Mexican food. He then spent 17 years in Las Vegas cheffing at some of the city’s top hotels, Cesar’s Palace, Bellagio, The Wynn, Mandalay Bay and The Paris. Since returning to England, Brad has worked at Carluccio’s in Gunwharf Quay, Portsmouth, and cheffed at Old Mutual Wealth, Southampton, before moving to the Island to head the kitchen team at the Nightingale.

High quality meals at competitive prices in a pleasing environment He said: “This is the dream chef’s job because Sam Parkinson (above right) my sous chef, and I can produce a variety of interesting and different dishes every day. We shall be serving a wide variety of locally caught fish, as well as meats and eggs from Brownriggs Farm, using as much local produce as possible. Sam has already built a reputation for creating wonderful desserts.” Sam, from Shanklin, has 13 years’ experience, having previously worked at pubs on the Island including The Star, Wroxall. He admits he loves creating and serving mouthwatering desserts, including one he jokingly describes as ‘diabetes on a plate’! He attended Carisbrooke and Sandown High Schools, before starting as a KP, and working his way up the culinary ladder. The Nightingale Restaurant will offer a daily choice of four starters, four mains and desserts each evening, with Brad and Sam also looking to produce their own specialities at weekends, assisted by commis and breakfast chef Shane Burden from Sandown. The Nightingale also has a bar menu from noon until 5.0pm, with the restaurant open from 6.30pm to 9.30 pm, and the well-stocked bar includes real ales, lagers, spirits and a fine selection of wines. The hotel will be holding themed nights, and can cater for Christmas parties, including a Christmas package. Booking is essential. Five things you should know about accidents involving pedestrians

It’s an unfortunate reality that thousands of pedestrians are injured in road traffic accidents every year. Often when there is an accident, the issue of ‘who is to blame?’ arises. There is a growing trend in which pedestrians are being found partly to blame for accidents. This is known as ‘contributory negligence’. The important point to remember is that contributory negligence does not prevent you from bringing a claim. Here are five things you should know about contributory negligence: • Sharing the blame: Contributory negligence is the concept that both parties are at some fault for the accident. If a pedestrian is crossing the road and fails to look in both directions, the pedestrian can still bring a claim for compensation against the driver but they might receive a reduced amount because they contributed to their injuries.

• Seeking compensation: The level of compensation is decided on a case by case basis. More often than not, a pedestrian will be able to recover some compensation from the driver of the vehicle. • Getting help and support for injuries: Pedestrians often suffer life-changing injuries in accidents and require a lot of medical intervention and care and support. By claiming compensation, pedestrians can secure funds to pay for their treatment and rehabilitation. If you have been injured in a road traffic accident but aren’t sure whether or not you can make a claim for compensation, we are happy to discuss your case with you at our offices in the St. Cross Business Park in Newport.

• Assessing the damage: It is up to the judge to decide the outcome of each case. They will take into account not only how much each party is to blame for the accident but also the fact that a vehicle driver will have the potential to cause more damage than a pedestrian. • Admission of liability: Even if the driver of the vehicle admits liability for the accident, the pedestrian’s contributory negligence will still be taken into account.

HOMES & PROPERTY

Rely on Isle of Wight Fuels Winter is fast approaching, and that inevitably means increased fuel consumption for heating oil users in many Island homes. But it is reassuring for those with oil fired heating or an Aga that Isle of Wight Fuels are on hand with their dedicated Island based sales team and efficient delivery service. Isle of Wight Fuels are not only fuel distributors but owners of the Island’s only fuel oil storage terminal. The company have three dedicated tankers to serve the Island with heating oil, underlining their aim to offer a first class customer service. And when it comes to the costs of heating your home, the trade association for the heating oil distribution industry, Federation of Petroleum Suppliers (FPS) has confirmed that oil has been consistently the cheapest fuel for home heating. The long-established terminal in East Cowes became Isle of Wight Fuels Ltd four years ago, coinciding with the arrival of David Grannum (pictured) as General Manager. He said: “It is always a concern to me that people are lulled into a false sense of security by buying alternative solutions that are supposed to be cheaper to run, but in fact are costing them more money than the traditional oil that they can store safely in their back gardens. And there are no standing charges or confusing contracts to understand. “You can buy with confidence the best price of oil, and expect to receive it within a few days of ordering. We are aware that the oil we provide is an important utility and we have recently invested in two brand new petrol tankers to ensure we can continue to provide a reliable service “Many parts of the Island are not connected to mains gas, so heating oil is an ideal solution. We are happy to offer advice if anyone would like to know more.” Up to two million litres of fuel arrive at the East Cowes

terminal each week, and contrary to popular belief, it is not carried here by pipeline from the mainland, but by a recently chartered larger ship which holds 1.8million litres of three different grades - petrol, diesel and kerosene and brings supplies from Immingham, near Kingston upon Hull. Once on the Island, the fuel is then distributed from another Kingston - this time Isle of Wight Fuels’ Kingston Road headquarters - to customers that range from Island Roads and Hovertravel, to supermarkets, and of course domestic consumers. Isle of Wight Fuels have also been instrumental in the return to the Island of the popular Esso brand, with David explaining: “It is a strong brand that Island motorists know and trust, and we are able to provide Esso fuel following improvements at our terminal.” Isle of Wight Fuels are continuing to raise their profile on the Island, knowing that without their expertise, knowledge and substantial investment, the whole Island would quickly grind to a halt, or at the very least cause major disruption by tankers bringing fuel over every day on the ferry routes.
