Our Mission
To provide essential and next-step services to restore hope and help end homelessness in Houston.
Dear Friends of The Beacon,
There is a blessing in belonging. In knowing, without a doubt, that whatever the circumstances or seasons of life in which we may fi nd ourselves that we are all beloved children of God.
God’s radical and unconditional love calls us, throughout the seasons of our lives, to share and form connections with one another. The Beacon is more than a place where resources are devoted to empowering our siblings in need – it is a point of connection, a ministry where time and service are transformed into helping others build lives reflective of their inherent dignity and worth. Sometimes these moments come to us with such clarity that we begin to understand the shifts that happen in seasons of life around us and that is truly a gift.
This year, as we reflect on the growth and impact of The Beacon’s ministry, I want to extend a sense of deep and abiding gratitude to three individuals who have contributed countless seasons of service in answering God’s call: Becky Landes, in her departure as CEO, Mike Puccio, as he embarks on a well-deserved retirement, and Bob Thurmond, whose passing has left a space in our hearts but whose legacy in founding the Beacon Law program lives on in perpetuity.
A universal truth we discover in life is that time is a precious resource, that we should make the most of the time we are given. Becky and Mike have made the most of their time at The Beacon. In serving each person who walks through the doors of The Beacon, its staff and volunteers remind us that our ability to welcome the stranger is our ability to welcome God into our midst. Even as we are sad to say goodbye, we anticipate the start of the next chapter of The Beacon’s leadership and continued successful seasons to come. We ask for your prayers and your support in this time of transition.
If there is one prayer that would be most appropriate to send Becky and Mike off with and to honor Bob’s legacy, it would be Thank You.
Peace and blessings,
The Very Rev. Nathaniel Katz Dean and Beacon Board Chair
IN MEMORIAM
Bob Thurmond
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do good things he planned for us long ago.”
EPHESIANS 2:10
In addition to the volunteer mentors who are paired with the women in our Brigid’s Hope program, one couple has been a constant source of spiritual guidance and growth for almost two decades. Since 2007, Fred and Donna Lowe have quietly been providing an invaluable resource to each participant in our Brigid’s Hope program, giving their time, energy and support to more than 200 women over the years.
Each summer, Fred and Donna gear up to deliver an 8-week course known as “The Only One Standing in Your Way is You.” The coursework has been adapted slightly over the last 17 years, but it’s rooted in Ephesians 2:10. Fred explains that the goal is to emphasize that new life and purpose are found in faith and that it’s our purpose to do good deeds that glorify God and serve others.
The women start by identifying values that are most important to them, a process of discovery that is as unique as they are. After a few sessions, they move towards creating their very own mission statement which further defi nes their core purpose in life. From there, they map out a vision of where they see themselves personally and impacting those around them. Living out their vision in permanence is key to their success.
Fred and Donna share that we all talk to ourselves more than we talk to others; and it’s this inner dialogue that can help to shape a person’s view of themselves and the world. The couple models what positive affi rmations look like and helps the women generate their own phrases that are purposeful and intentional.
The sessions culminate with an offsite retreat at Camp Allen where the women continue to hone what they have learned for the last two months. At the retreat, the women create vision boards that are shared with Fred and Donna and one another. These manifestations of each woman’s journey and the testimonials they share at graduation ceremonies are what drive Fred and Donna.
The transformations are real, and they are because of the women putting in the effort to make lasting change, the mentors who stay by their sides and because of Fred and Donna Lowe who are unwavering in their hope for each and every woman.

We love it when corporate groups embrace our mission and inspire their employees to volunteer or give financially – both of which are critical to accomplishing our work.
Oliver Wyman Houston has taken this to the next level.
Near the end of the pandemic, several sta members reached out to learn more about our work at The Beacon and how we serve an extremely vulnerable population during challenging times. Zoom introductions and socially distanced meetings took place and the team held their first employeeled fundraiser for The Beacon in early 2022.
Oliver Wyman is a global management consulting firm that provides advisory services to businesses across various industries. They employ a wide array of specialists who o er expertise in strategy, operations, risk management and organizational transformation. And, they are extremely creative!
Auction items up for grabs have ranged from conference room naming rights to murder mystery parties, fresh eggs for a year and a weekend stay at a Texas hill country home.
Possibly one of the more exciting items auctioned o is the “beard rights” of one of their employees. Yes, that is right! The highest bidder wins total artistic control (style, color and design) over their co-worker’s long and famous beard!
This lively auction event has continued each year since 2022, raising nearly $140,000 for The Beacon’s program and services. More than 60 Oliver Wyman employees have participated in raising money for The Beacon, donating items/ experiences and bidding high at the auction! On top of that, Oliver Wyman’s parent company Marsh McLennan has matched a portion of the funds raised.
Members of their team have also volunteered in the Day Center, preparing meals and folding laundry for our clients. In 2024, Oliver Wyman volunteers contributed 47 hours to our work!
We are extremely grateful to all the Oliver Wyman employees who rally around The Beacon and show up for those we serve in every possible way!
Oliver Wyman proudly stands behind The Beacon and wholeheartedly supports the vital work they do for our community. It has been an honor to collaborate with them, and we applaud their unwavering commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of those they serve.

When I assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer at The Beacon in 2016, one of the first items on my agenda was to review the various programs and administrative functions of the organization. This involved getting to know our team, meeting our clients, identifying successful components, and evaluating opportunities for growth and improvement.
In the early months, I was also house hunting, wanting to move out of the suburbs and into town so that I could cut down on my commute. I looked at a lot of houses, but none of them fit my perfect criteria. Disappointed, I felt sorry for myself – I did not get the house I was hoping for after all and I had to make some concessions.
Around this same time, I met a man named John in our Day Center. John beamed as he told me that after five years living on Houston’s streets, he was just approved to move into his very own apartment. John’s worn appearance reflected the hardships of living unsheltered, but his joy radiated to everyone around him that day. This milestone for John certainly put my own housing disappointments in perspective and gave hope to others seeking stable housing.
From the very start, I appreciated working at The Beacon. What has influenced me the most is the grace, curiosity, resilience, and expertise of the individuals, such as John, whom we serve.
During my tenure, I have witnessed so many celebratory moments from move-ins and recovery journeys to restored hope through repeated acts of service. But, some evenings, after my workday was over, I would break down and cry for the hundreds of individuals that had no place to call home and struggled to keep going one day after the next. While there is sadness in our work, I recognize that serving others is a privilege – especially with an incredibly talented and dedicated staff.
Service also brings immense joy. The Beacon is extremely fortunate to have supporters who advance our mission by volunteering their time or making financial contributions – and many who do both! I hope our Beacon supporters find joy in service and continue to prop up this vital work.
I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy.
— Rabindranath Tagore
Although I am leaving The Beacon this summer to move back to my hometown of Staunton, Viriginia, I plan to keep tabs from afar and look forward to hearing more success stories like John’s. I have faith that The Beacon’s next CEO will quickly see the impact that this organization is making and build upon this important work of serving those in our community who need it the most.
In service,
Becky Landes Chief Executive Officer
My name is Autumn Valero, and I am a grateful woman in long-term recovery. My journey began in 2016 when I entered treatment at Santa Maria Hostel. Like many others who take their first steps toward healing, I was overwhelmed and uncertain—but I was also met with a wealth of resources that would change my life.
One of the most impactful resources I encountered was The Beacon. Through their compassionate and comprehensive support, I was connected with several paralegals who helped me address numerous legal issues, eliminate outstanding fines, and restore my identification.
Even more remarkably, they represented me in court and worked to have several of my cases dismissed—all at no cost to me. These weren’t just legal victories—they were personal breakthroughs. The Beacon helped remove the heavy legal burdens that had held me back, clearing the path for my transformation and giving me a real chance at a new life.
If it weren’t for The Beacon, I truly believe I would not be where I am today. Their support gave me the ability to focus on my recovery without the constant fear of legal setbacks. For that, I will always be grateful.
Today, I stand not only as a woman in recovery but also as a source of support for others. I am a certified Recovery Support Peer Specialist (RSPS) and Mental Health Peer Specialist (MHPS) in Texas. As a Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) advocate, I firmly believe that recovery is possible for everyone—and I’ve dedicated my life to proving just that.
From 2017 to 2020, I served as a Peer Mentor for court-involved families, guiding them through some of their most difficult times. After earning my RSPS and MHPS certifications in 2020, I worked with the Harris County Family Reunification Court and later returned to Santa Maria Hostel, where I have continued to support women in recovery since 2021. I have referred many of these women to the Brigid’s Hope program and witnessed amazing transformations take place.
I currently serve as a Project Coordinator for the Department of Justice’s Second Chance Act Path to Recovery grant through Santa Maria Hostel. In this role, I support individuals as they reintegrate into society, providing them with the same hope and resources that once empowered me.
In 2023, I had the honor of sharing my journey and insights as a guest speaker at the Council of State Governments’ Second Chance Act forum in Washington, D.C.—a full-circle moment that reminded me just how far I’ve come. Today, I proudly serve on the Second Chance Act Children of Incarcerated Parents (COIP) Advisory Board through the Council of State Governments.
My mission is simple: to be a vessel of light. I share my lived experience to show others that recovery is not just a possibility—it is a promise. With the right support, community, and determination, a new life is within reach.
When Keeya was enrolled in The Beacon Day 1 Diversion program, she was living at a youth shelter after being evicted from her last residence. She had previously been exited from a Rapid Rehousing program and was not able to cover her rent. She was able to establish employment as a restaurant manager while living at the emergency shelter.
We provided her with short-term transportation assistance to maintain her employment and assisted her with locating a second chance property that would accept her with the eviction on her record.
Keeya moved into her new apartment in October 2024 with her partner and their 1-year-old child, and the program continued assisting with groceries and rent for three months to ensure the family could restabilize. The family also received furniture assistance and a Welcome Home Basket through Coalition for the Homeless Houston. Keeya was able to figure out her own transportation and maintained her employment throughout the transition period.
Upon exiting the program in December 2024, she was already able to set aside money for January rent and was saving up money for a new addition to their family. We were recently in touch with the family and they have continued to maintain stable housing.
Adrian’s journey is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when determination meets the right support. He first started coming to The Beacon after someone in the community told him that the organization could help with housing and other essential needs. At the time, Adrian was sleeping at Moody Park when not in a shelter.
He received a pre-navigation referral for our Navigation team to assist in gathering documentation necessary for a housing referral. While he was waiting on his housing referral, Adrian participated in our Thriving in Place (TIP) class at The Beacon. He stated that the class was very informative and meaningful, as it helped him learn about resources and other services like Beacon Law and, most importantly, kept him engaged and hopeful.
Thanks to his determination and the guidance he received, Adrian successfully transitioned into Permanent Supportive Housing in April 2024. Shortly after, he obtained employment at a bakery near his apartment, setting the foundation for long-term success and independence. A quote he hopes will resonate with others on a similar journey is, “Never give up on yourself.” It’s a simple yet powerful reminder to hold on to hope, even in the hardest moments.

Dear Friends,
One of the honors of serving on The Beacon Board of Directors is participating in the board service day and volunteer luncheon that we hold each spring.
On a recent Saturday in April, a group of board members met for this annual event, where we served a scratchmade lunch to some 200 clients.
As people moved through the serving line, we greeted them and asked them for their preferences. Their faces told many stories. Some looked tired and worn, while others were expressionless. Some wanted to engage, joking and laughing with us. Many quietly told us how much they appreciated The Beacon.
After we fi nished serving, we shared pizza, salad and conversation with our volunteers. Some work in the kitchen, preparing and serving meals, while others help clients determine what services they need that day. Others enjoy working in the laundry, and the satisfaction they get from handing a stack of freshly laundered clothes to someone for whom that simple act will make the day a little better.
The Beacon is in a period of transition. Earlier this year we lost long-time board member Bob Thurmond, who started our Beacon Law program. I am so glad that Bob and his wife, Julie, were able to join us at our annual Come to the Table event last September, where we had a lively conversation, and shared stories about some of Bob’s moments with Beacon Law.
As a board, we are happy for Mike and Becky as they pursue their new adventures. We will miss them, and we thank them.
We so appreciated Becky’s leadership during the past few years, as she guided us through challenging times that included hurricanes, freezes and the pandemic. In such times, Becky always made sure that The Beacon was stepping up to meet additional, emerging needs. We value all that Becky has done for The Beacon and for Houston’s homeless population.
With gratitude,
Susan Reeves Beacon Board President
