“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”

William Butler Yeats

This quotation from Yeats suggests that many people (wrongly) assume that teaching is trying to fill a pupil’s head with facts (like one can fill a pail with water). However, Yeats advocates that teaching is instead about inspiring growth (like adding a spark to a bundle of kindling) and that the job of education is to teach children to think broadly and critically. In other words, intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education. This is our aim at Beachborough.

I was lucky that at school, I had teachers that lit up my mind with their passion for their subjects. For me, the flame continued to burn, as I trained to teach English, and my love of Literature has been the torch that has guided me throughout my career; as a teacher there is no greater pleasure than passing on that spark to somebody else and seeing them get as excited as you do about your subject.

Where our pupils have already found their passion, we do our best as a school to nurture it. But one of the most important things adults can do for young people is introduce them to as many new subjects, skills, and experiences as possible for every time we do, we open the world of the possible and this could be the thing that really lights their fire. At Beachborough this week, there were 43 co-curricular clubs, a Violin and Cello Concert, a Piano and Keyboard Workshop at Stowe, the Regional Robotics Championships and a Formal Dinner for Form VII and VIII Regular Boarders, not to mention the Form VI performance of “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.”

There are many, many privileges in being a Headteacher, but one of the unparalleled joys of the role is seeing the children grab the many opportunities on offer and then absolutely smash it. I’ve seen it on the sports field, I see it in classrooms, I hear it in the musical performances, and I even taste it in Food Tech; last night, I saw it as Form VI gave a magnificent performance of “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” in the Whybrow.

The study and performance of drama at any level allows the children to make cognitive and physical connections with the world around them, with no fear of being right or wrong. The range of skills experienced in a single lesson provides the “soft skills” and personal attributes that will inevitably be used in situations outside the classroom, confidence, social cues, and clear, effective communication. Whether through improvisation, or engaging with a character in a script, drama fosters use of the imagination and decision-making to engage an audience.

“Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” is a spectacular tale of an eccentric inventor, the marvellous Truly Scrumptious, two children - Jeremy and Jemima, and a magical car named “Chitty,” set in the faraway country of Vulgaria. What a terrific show it is; if you have not seen it yet, and you are going tonight, you are in for a treat!

Last night, there was such energy and enthusiasm from the extremely talented cast, huge congratulations to them all. A special thanks to the dedicated team of staff who made it all happen: Mrs Andrew – Director, Mrs Chatfield – Musical Director, Mrs Boardman – Choreography, Mrs Cox – Set Design, Miss Cheshire and Mrs Oram – Costumes and Props Design and Mr Perronnet for the amazing Chitty Car.

As I am writing, I have just heard that the “Beachbotics” Team have won the Regional Robotics Championships and are the Regional Champions! Congratulations to Harrison B, Will W, Gethin P, Isabella W, Abigail C, Charlie L, Megan M, Zach L-W, Dylan M and Henry F. Next, we are off to Harrogate for the National Championships. A huge thank you to Mrs Blithe and Mr Foote for their support and coaching of the team.

Wishing you a restful and relaxing weekend, Simone

A Science Update!

Curiosity, Creativity and Challenge were the requirements of the day, when a small group of Form VI headed to Cheltenham College last week, for an afternoon of Science. The children were given the fantastic opportunity to dissect their own owl pellets (coughed up by barn owls), with the skulls of mice and shrews being identified amongst the fur and feathers. They went on to the Physics dept to solve a variety of puzzles, using equipment such as stroboscopes, oscilloscopes, pendulums and projectors, but it was the Chemistry department which left them covering their ears and eyes as they made glow in the dark luminous solutions, and created gases that gave loud squeaky explosions. They also realised the power of pressurised gas, launching plastic bottles towards the ceiling with their various carbonated drink mixtures. It was an enriching and fabulous afternoon, which left their curious minds with more ideas and questions than when they arrived.

National Science Week celebrated its 30th Anniversary this year, and coincided with the 30th anniversary of the construction of the Eurotunnel. To mark these anniversaries, various classes were given the opportunity to design and build rollercoaster tracks which were exciting and creative, and allowed a small train carriage to complete a lap once launched. We discussed the different forces involved, energy transfers that were occurring, and some designs were certainly very ambitious. A good deal of reflection, resilience and perseverance was required in ensuring the success of their constructions, but there were some fantastic creations.

Quiz Club News!

Last Friday, the amazing Beachborough Quiz Club teams competed in the National Quiz Club Semi Finals. Out of 50 entries, we held our own, finishing in 26th and 29th place, respectively. The competition was hot, vis-a-vis the questions, but we only ended up needing a few more correct answers to progress to the final. We all have a feeling that next year could be our time to progress all the way. Hats off to Eliza B, Ariana M, Erin K, Zach LW, Morgan M and Henry C for a super performance from start to finish.

Gymnastics Competiton Success...

Children from the Boardman represented the school at the Wade Gymnastics Competition on Sunday. For many of them, it was their first time at competing and they presented their routines with confidence in front of a large gathering of spectators. The more experienced gymnasts were on super form. Orla E received an Overall Medal for both her Floor and Vault, and Tilly B an individual Silver Medal for her Floor routine. In the Year 1 & 2 category, Team 2 won a Bronze Medal and in the Year 3 & 4 category, Team 1 won a Silver Medal. Congratulations to Iris P, Isla A, Lily A, Tabitha S, Zoe E, Orla E, Tilly B, Hannah F, Hermione S and Evie E. The judges were also looking for a gymnast that showed flair and promise in their skills, and we were thrilled that Belle T won an Artistry Medal for her Floor routine. All competitors received a certificate, which we will present to them again in our Celebration Assembly soon. We are so proud of all of their achievements.

Rugby Sevens Festival...

Last Saturday 9th March, our U13A and U11A sides competed in the Winchester House Rugby Sevens competition. For the U13’s, this was their second 7’s event of the term, having competed, and performed well, in the Northampton Saints Buckinghamshire series in early February, whilst the U11’s were playing in their maiden event in this format.

The U13’s started with a morale boosting win against MCS, Oxford, which was then followed by a narrow 10-15 defeat to St Joseph’s in a very tight game. Arguably, the best game of the morning’s programme was their third group game against Brackley Rugby Club, in which the boys played some fantastic, free flowing rugby and, buoyed on by some vociferous support, led 10-5 going into the dying embers of the game. A fast break from their most dangerous player led to an equalising try for Brackley with the last play. However, the team still advanced to the Cup competition where they met Bedford in the quarter finals. This is where their tournament ended as despite a valiant rally towards the end, Bedford ran out comfortable winners.

The U11’s also enjoyed some exciting games, none more so than the opening one against Bromsgrove. Despite falling behind to an early try, the team responded superbly to lead 10-5. Two quickfire tries from Bromsgrove meant we were behind going into the last minute of the game. Some good handling after a ruck resulted in Alex H sprinting away and scoring with the last play of the game to give the boys a thoroughly deserved draw. We then comfortably beat both St Hugh’s and Winchester House to move into the top 3 stage of the competition. We had no answers in our rematch with Bromsgrove, in what was effectively billed as a final, but did beat Bedford (and a familiar face amongst their ranks!) to finish 2nd overall; a wonderful effort.

A Staff Update...

I am writing with a staff update, Caroline Smith or Caz as she is affectionally known, has decided to retire from her role as Boarding Matron at the end of this academic year. Caz has dedicated her working life to Beachborough and has given so much love and care to many, many children during this time. She will be missed but leaves us to embark on a new life chapter.

We will say a formal goodbye at the end of the Summer Term but I know you will join me in wishing her every success and happiness in the future.

This week, in Mr Plowright's English lesson, we performed a monologue, with each child taking on the role of Edward Tulane.

With careful attention to detail, the children were tasked with embodying the character through expressions and gestures. It was truly impressive to witness their dedication and commitment to bringing the character to life.

Beachbotics Victory!

What an exhilarating journey it has been for our Beachbotics team as we triumphantly clinched victory at the Regional First Lego League! The thrill of progressing to Nationals is beyond words. Throughout the day, the teams dedication and hard work was truly evident as they continuously recorded progress, fine-tuning their strategies, and improving with every robotic match. Their innovation project was nothing short of fantastic, showcasing the team's ingenuity and creativity. The presentations captivated the judges, demonstrating their thorough research and innovative solutions. Winning the Cranfield University award, voted for by all the volunteers, was the icing on the cake. Unanimously chosen for their outstanding teamwork, conduct, problem-solving skills, and unwavering enthusiasm, it truly validates their efforts. None of this would have been possible without the invaluable guidance and support of Gary Foote, whose wisdom and encouragement has propelled Beachbotics towards success. As they prepare for Nationals, we know this victory, will be driving them to work even harder and face new challenges with determination and enthusiasm. We are so proud of you all.

A huge well done to Eddie, Jonah, Tami, Harry, Keagan, Timothy and Bethany, for performing with such confidence!
