FIII Rainforest Trip!

Last Friday, FIII spent the day at The Living Rainforest.

The children received a guided tour, and learnt how plants and animals have adapted to the living rainforest environment, discovering how adaptation can lead to evolution over time. The tour covered areas such as how the leaves gets rid of excess water; plant adaptations to maximise light and nutrient uptake; and the way various animals are suited to life in the rainforest.

FIII had a fantastic, informative day out, and discovered many interesting facts about the rainforest and its inhabitants. They even concluded their day with a trip to the park!

FV Girls' Cricket Festival

On Wednesday 1st May, 10 girls from Form V represented Beachborough at St Edward's Cricket Festival. They started the afternoon with a 1 hour coaching session in the cricket nets, focusing on accurate target practice. The girls were throwing the ball at the cricket stumps to mimic when this is used in a match scenario. They then went onto practice some batting, before playing 3 cricket matches.

In the first match, we played against Chandlings. With some brilliant batting from Thea R and Isabella B, Beachborough won 163-136.

Our second match was against Marlston House, and Beachborough won again with 150-116. Eva P batted really well, along with Thea R and Sophie C. Tilly E caught a brilliant catch, as well as bowling a wicket, and Isabella B bowled two consecutive wickets!

In our third match against St Andrew's, the girls played great cricket but sadly lost 122 to 127. Eva P fielded at short mid wicket and caught a brilliant catch!

Box and Board Night...

On Monday night, Kites soared into an exhilarating boxing evening, led by the seasoned boxer and coach, Luke Shears. With patience and precision, he guided the children through fundamental moves, eliciting laughter and determination as they honed their newfound skills.

But this wasn’t just about punches and combinations; we delved into thrilling team games, igniting laughter and cheers from everyone. From relay races to agility challenges, our young fighters and staff gave their all!

As the adrenaline subsided, we retreated to the boarding house for toasty delights and a well-deserved night’s rest.

And guess what? The gloves are staying close, because we’re already plotting our next adventure! Keep an eye out for details on our upcoming Box and Board Night.

St Hugh's v Beachborough Colts

Losing the toss, we were put into bat by the hosts, on a very green wicket – which is not surprising considering all the rain in the last few months. Both teams were playing with ten boys. Keagan and captain Freddie strode out confidently, and both tried to play shots from the off. Keagan unfortunately played all round a straight ball and in no time, we were 5/1. Rory came out at number three, and we rallied to 37 before a confident looking Freddie succumbed to another straight ball. He played some lovely strokes for his 12 runs. We then lost four wickets for twenty runs, sadly all being bowled other than Felix who was run out. We lost the remaining wickets for a further 13 runs, ending on 70/9 off 14 overs.

Rain started to fall towards the end of our innings, so we decided to play on and take tea at the end of the match.

Will opened the bowling for us and immediately made an impact, taking a wicket with his first ball and two overall in his first three deliveries. This impressive start was followed by two terrific overs from Freddie and Leo, who both took wickets for very few runs and the hosts were stunned and limped to 7 runs for 4 wickets after three overs. Things improved for St Hughs, who lurched to 36 before they lost their fifth wicket when Freddie came back on for his second spell. A terrific diving effort in the field by Keagan saved four runs, with the former passing the ball to Will who threw it in for a run out (match day moment 2). There were wickets too for Arthur P, Arthur K, Felix and Ian, but match day moment number 1 was a terrific slip catch from the skipper off Arthur P’s bowling, which wrapped the game up. All out for 58, St. Hugh’s lost by 12 runs. A terrific team performance aided significantly by our bowling and fielding secured our first win of the season. Man of the Match was Will for his bowling and fielding, well done!

PP2 Residential to Woodrow...

What an incredible adventure we had together at Woodrow High House, on Tuesday and Wednesday. We started our trip with an exciting tour of the house and grounds, giving us a sneak peek into what to expect from our stay. The weather couldn't have been better for a picnic outside with our friends, surrounded by the sensory garden and beautiful woodlands. Off we went with full tummies on a woodland walk spotting mushrooms, which we never realised sing to each other, as well as fighting fallen trees and smelling the aromatic herbs. In the afternoon, we split into our groups and began our chosen learning activities of 'Bushcraft', 'Nightline' and 'Back to Nature'.

Nightline entailed a hilarious obstacle course, wearing some fetching goggles that blacked our vision out, so we were totally reliant on our team and communication skills to make it through the squelchy mud, coded doors, and a rather swampy mattress. Bushcraft left feeling a sense of achievement, after persevering to light a fire without matches. Nobody could match Mrs Sanders' years of experience lighting fire in forest school! We munched some smoky popcorn after we successfully managed to build a small fire. We felt like we pulled ourselves back to nature, using our senses to make beautiful pictures and creatures using mud and flowers, stinky or fragrant perfumes, and scavenging for textured items for our egg boxes. To finish our first day at Woodrow, we set off to the campfire site for toasted marshmallows, chocolate biscuits and crazy songs and jokes. Although they were tired, they loved every minute with sticky fingers and chocolatey smiles. After a lovely night's kip in the beds, we tried to make ourselves, we were ready to finish off the tasks and to 'DROP IT, POP IT!' Poor Dan, a favourite instructor, took a dowsing after the children's water bombs crashed to the ground from the top floor of Woodrow's fire escape. All in all, a bundle of fun! It was a privilege to take away such enthusiastic and curious children who smiled the whole trip, encouraging their friends when they needed it.

Fun at the farm!

Over the last three weeks, PP2 have been bringing their topic of ‘Living and Growing’ to life with private tours of ‘Featherbed Fruits Farm’ in Mixbury, and the ‘BarnOwl Farm Shop’ in Evenly. What incredible opportunities we have had to explore a hydroponic and drip-irrigation strawberry farm, and to have the intricacies of how the computer system controls the temperature, water, roof, and fans to grow the best strawberries in our local community. It looked like no strawberry farm we ever imagined. Some of the 50,000kg of strawberries are produced in these enormous poly-tunnels, the size of Wembley, for corporate and famous events! On our visit, we learnt all about the 400 bees that were released to support the carefully planned environment, how the good pests combat the bad pests, why some strawberries are classed as wonky and the life cycle of a strawberry plant. Back onto the minibus and off to our next destination…the pigs! The children learnt about what parts of a pig went into pieces of meat we could buy. The children were able to use their prior knowledge to create a shopping bag of foods from each food group for a balanced diet. The butchers that created the beautiful meat display were so welcoming and engaged with the children. They answered their questions and made suggestions to extend their learning further. We finished our shop visit with a trip to view the pigs in their pen, and reflect on how food goes from farm to fork. We finished our group visit with a delicious treat from the shop.
