“Experience, travel – these are as education in themselves” – Euripides

Most of us will remember a school trip or educational visit we took part in, maybe due to being cold, wet, scared, excited or all of these, but at the time and maybe even now, we didn’t know what a huge benefit the visit was for us. My first school trip was to Hatfield Forest when I was four, and I am sure my teacher planned this visit to enable us to make discoveries about nature and to help us create a lasting connection with natural history. Although, all I can remember about that trip is that I had to sit next to a boy I did not like on the coach, as we had to sit in alphabetical order, and that I got to eat jam sandwiches!

At Beachborough, we value educational visits because we believe they play an important role in achieving our goal of enabling the children to thrive and make a positive difference in the world.

Educational visits ignite curiosity, questioning, and creativity. By stepping outside the classroom and immersing themselves in real-world experiences, the children have the opportunity to explore and discover new perspectives and foster the critical thinking skills that are essential for their personal and academic growth.

Last week, I had the pleasure of accompanying the Chamber Choir on their Tour to Belgium. Not only did the children enjoy some superb choral opportunities (our last concert in De Penne, received a standing ovation and had us all in tears), but the experience of a residential trip in a foreign country also provided the children with the chance to negotiate complex situations, reconcile tensions and work together. By interacting with their peers in new and unfamiliar settings, the children learnt to develop and practice empathy, communicate effectively, and work together towards a common goal. These collaborative experiences foster teamwork and prepare them for future professional and personal relationships. By being exposed to different environments and situations, the children become more self-aware and develop self-regulation skills.

All the children at Beachborough have the opportunity to experience residential and non-residential trips from a Reception class visit to Buckingham Library, PP2 having a sleep over in the Boardman, Form III staying at Cuffley or visiting the Living Rainforest, Form VI crossing the channel to Normandy and Form VIII’s final residential to Aberdovey. There is something for everyone to enjoy and experience.

These educational visits outside of the formal classroom provide transformative experiences that equip our Beachburians with agency, adaptability, positive attitudes and provide lifelong memories. In addition, a specific trip or destination may inspire your son or daughter to revisit in the future and consider a new opportunity or career path. After all, we are preparing the children today for a world that is yet to unfold. This week also saw our second Creative Technologists Innovative (CTI) Day of this year, aimed at Form V. This year’s theme was “Pedal Power,” and we welcomed Mike Mullen a former BMX World Champion, who spoke about the growth mindset and being willing to take a risk. The children also participated in workshops on friction and the impact it has on stopping distances, and gravity and its effects when riding a bike. Finally, they had the opportunity to get creative by making keychains and an automated pedalling creature. We welcomed three local primary schools to join us, making over 125 children in total. My thanks go to Mrs Blithe and the Beachborough staff for making this such a special and exciting day.

We are all hoping for good weather on Sunday, as many Beachborough children will be participating in the Prep Schools Charity Triathlon at Oundle School. I will be going along to offer my support, so I hope to see many of you there.

Wishing you a great weekend.

Simone

The Chamber Choir Goes on Tour!

On Thursday 2nd May, our Chamber Choir made their way to Belgium. The children will have experienced a great deal over the four days they were away, and we could visibly see them growing in confidence over the weekend. We were travelling to sing, but we all learnt so much from being away from home; being independent, problem solving (making beds!), and having to organise ourselves. Seeing different cultures and languages, and having an awareness of others is so important, and the children were superb ambassadors for the school. On our outward-bound journey on the ferry, one family came up to say how well behaved and polite our children were, and the manager of Youth Hostel was impressed at how the children dealt with the schedule.

We had a superb Coach Driver, 'Dan the Man', who was an invaluable part of the trip, with advice, suggestions and great fun! The accommodation was spacious and friendly, with good food and plenty of space to play and relax.

We started with the Chocco Story, with the history of chocolate, chocolate tasting, and a live demo (with more chocolate to eat), followed by a very popular shop - I hope you actually got to eat some of the purchases! A visit to the war memorials, which moved everyone and a tour of The Brugge Concert Hall, with a chance to sing on the Chamber music stage and the large concert hall.

Finally, the concerts were brilliant. Two very different environments, one outside with passers-by and some who stayed for the whole gig. The children had fun and enjoyed the informality. The second had been well advertised, and we had a full church and an extremely appreciative audience. There was a magical feel to the performance and it was very moving to receive a standing ovation! The concert organisers were blown away, saying the choir were outstanding. A very special occasion which I will treasure.

The staff team of Mrs Mitchell, Mr Wilson, and Miss Sutherland were fantastic; they took great care of the children, going above and beyond to ensure their safety and enjoyment and the whole tour was wonderful.

Well done to every single child who took part!

Sponsored Cycle!

With the Oundle Triathlon set to take place this Sunday, Dougy, Ollie, Sam, and Freddie did a sponsored cycle to school on Thursday, cycling a total of 10 miles. Their aim was to fundraise for the triathlon ahead of participating this weekend, and they successfully raised over £100 each!

Amazing work, team. Wishing you the best of luck this weekend!

Beachborough Colts v Bilton Grange

A glorious, warm sunny day and the pristine Beachborough grounds were the backdrop to Thursday's fixture for the boys against Bilton Grange. Freddie, our captain for a second week, lost the toss and we were put into bat.

Freddie and Keagan strode out purposefully and Freddie took the game to our guests, playing some solid shots. Keagan sadly never really settled, and although he did get bat on ball a couple of times, he was undone without scoring. This was disappointing as he is a capable batsman. The score was 21 for the loss of the first wicket and in came Rory, who played some nice shots and was settling into a good rhythm when he was out LBW for 6 off 16 balls. A bit of luck his way and he would’ve scored a few. The score had moved on to 49/2 at this point, which is testament to how well Freddie was batting. Sadly, Arthur K didn’t trouble the scorers and Arthur P didn’t fair too much better, a middle order mini collapse, found us at 71/4. In came Will, showing some nerves initially but verbally rejoicing when he’d scored 2 runs, as this was his highest score of the season so far… he needn’t have fretted, he batted very well from there on and formed a terrific partnership with Freddie. The captain scored a terrific 33 off 55 – a decent strike rate of 65, before he was disappointingly runout. A captain’s innings indeed. Will was joined by Ian at the crease, who both managed to see out the remainder of the innings, despite some indeterminate calling. Will scored 15 off 20, and Ian amassed 7 off 17. We finished on 131 for 5 off our allotted 20 overs. All in all, a very decent score.

After the tea break, we took to the field and Will opened the bowling. A devastating opening over reduced the guests to 0/1 off 1, with Will hitting the target with his fourth ball. A lean over from Freddie followed, only conceding 2 runs, and another wicket fell in the third over when Leo bowled a belter! Bilton were rattled at 4/2, and our heads were high. What a triumvirate of overs. Things relatively settled a bit for the batsmen and a few runs accumulated here and there. Arthur and Felix bowled steadily, their straight balls always somehow finding the bat. The next to bowl was Keagan, a whisper in his ear ‘bowl straight, not fast’ must’ve struck a chord because his first ball was straight as a die, a flailing shot from the batsman across line missed and Keagan hit! 16/3 and our tails were up. Another wicket a few deliveries later from Ian’s fourth ball really had our opponents struggling. If they thought this was bad, worse was only moments away. The MATCH DAY MOMENT(S)On came Arthur K, a run out on his second ball by Arthur P followed by a Freddie catch at point and a plum LBW, three in three… saw the score shrivel to 22/8… our bowling then took a turn, the extras column grew in number and the batsmen were granted some breathing space. The impetus was lost, our focus dropped, and we took our foot of the pedal a bit. I appreciate in all but the score the game was won but we must remain ruthless right to the end. In nearly six overs, more than 30 runs were conceded, mostly in extras. The final two wickets fell to Arthur P and Felix respectively, with Bilton Grange finishing on 55 all out. A victory IS a victory, nonetheless. Both Freddie for his batting and Arthur K for his bowling were my Men of the Match - well done both!

CTI Day: Pedal Power!

On Tuesday 7th May, we welcomed Year 5 children from The Radstone Primary School, Helmdon Primary School, and Finmere Primary School, to join our FV Beachburians for our second CTI event of the year.

The day was jam-packed with exciting activities, which centered around the theme of 'bikes'. The morning began with an impressive trick display, from BMX Halfpipe Champion, Mike Mullen; the children were amazed, and couldn't wait to have a go themselves! In the TED Suite, they created pedalling creatures, using the electric saws and pillar drills, before connecting a simple crank. In the Science Labs, they investigated friction and how tyres perform on different road surfaces.

The Art Room was used for making beautiful keychains, with patterns and decorative cogs, and in the Computing Room, the children built and programmed a device that demonstrated gravitational pull. The final activity was an inspirational BMX Workshop with Mike, which gave the children an opportunity to try a multitude of exciting tricks, using their own BMX bike. It was fantastic to see the confidence of the children growing with each trick that they tried, whilst encouraging each other to not give up when they found it challenging.

We extend a special thank you to Mike, and to the local schools that joined us. We hope you had a fabulous day.

The Winton Cup at Stowe...

On Tuesday 7 May 2024, Beachborough sent a team of 6 Form VI students to take part in Stowe School’s Prep School Humanities Competition, The Winton Cup (billed as the most prestigious prep schools’ humanities competition!). This year, the theme was entitled ‘Are some wars morally justified?'. There were 15 schools in the competition and each team was took part in five activities: Geography, History, History of Art, Philosophy and Religion, and Politics. Although the team did not win the competition, they were challenged academically and acquitted themselves admirably, and showed great collaboration with each other and with the other teams from the other two schools in their group.

Congratulating Josh...

On Wednesday evening, Joshua S in Form VII received the wonderful news that he has been offered a two year contract with West Bromwich Albion Football Club, to remain in their academy. This is a significant achievement, considering the competitive nature of professional football, and the club are delighted with Josh’s progress, recognsiing the huge potential that he has. Josh was told by The Head of Foundation Phase “it’s exciting watching you on the pitch, when you drive the ball forward, we know things are going to happen.”

Josh will now continue his footballing journey, playing against the very best teams in the country. He heads across to Turin in Italy in a couple of weeks time, playing a tournament against the likes of Lazio, Juventus, AC & Inter Milan, Lausanne, Nice and Monaco, amongst others.

Beachborough School is extremely proud of Josh and everything that he has achieved up to this point with his football with West Bromwich Albion. His hard work, drive and commitment has led him to this point and we look forward to monitoring his progress for many years to come.
