Every Courtwarming, a time honored tradition occurs on Powell Court between that year's senior class and the faculty in the Dekalb Senior Faculty Game. Each year, the senior class and staff gather their star studded rosters for the most important basketball game of the year. The rules are the same as any other basketball game, except it’s two 20 minute halves with a running clock at all times. Normally, the staff take a more relaxed approach to the game, providing some friendly banter and laughs while playing light defense. This year though, the staff turned the knob up to 11 and played all out against the seniors. While not all the seniors played, most of the basketball teams and a few others suited up against the staff. One basketball senior, Jayden Schnieder, remembers mostly about “I remember losing pretty badly, but thankfully the scoreboard operator was new to the job.” Cristen Cagle watched from the sidelines, cheering on her fellow staff members, watching as “Lathan grabbed the ball and immediately asked for help.” While the seniors lost pretty badly, it was a fun experience that they’ll remember for the rest of their lives and have stories that they can give their kids in the future. Hopefully, next year's senior class can avenge the seniors of this year and put a stop to the reign of the staff.

Courtwarming Dance a Success By: Ashlee Derry

To end the exciting and eventful week of Courtwarming, we had our annual Courtwarming dance. This year things were kind of different. Usually, you'd think there would just be dancing and not much more. But, this year, there was more than dancing. We had many different options of games to play from Uno to Twister. A few students who showed up joined in a game of UNO. The students that attended all enjoyed themselves and had fun. “It was pretty cool. I had a lot of fun, and it was entertaining when people got in the trash can,” said senior Nat Griffin. Michaela Copeland agrees with Nat: “Well, Bella and I danced in a trash can, so that was fun.”

FEBRUARY 16, 2024

Student Council Sponsor Ms. Cagle said that turnout to the dance “was average compared to the previous dances.” Ms. Cagle has been helping put the dance on, along with the help of the Student Council President for many years. Many of the students that attended had a great time at the dance with whatever they decided to do from busting a move on the dance floor to playing some competitive uno games. In the future, we do hope that more students show up so there can be more great memories made.

What to Play By: Boston Burdette

Fortnite is one of the most popular games that Epic Games has ever released with new people buying the game every week. Playing ranked games is fun because the higher the rank, the harder it gets.

What to Read By: Brayden Bowen

I recently finished Dark Age, the fifth novel in the Red Rising series by Pierce Brown. It is also, by far, the goriest, most violent, and worst book I’ve ever read in terms of enjoyment. Don’t get me wrong, it’s well written but I know that everyone I like is gonna die, and Pierce Brown doesn’t slack on the details. He takes 3 pages to describe a nuclear warhead vaporizing the main characters army and an entire city. However, this book gives you just a tiny bit of hope. It’s just enough to give you a hope that your characters you like will survive and be happy. But this book doesn’t aim to please, it aims to devastate, startle, and scar the reader. It’s one of the most beautifully violent masterpieces I think I’ve ever read, and continues to be one of the greatest pieces of literature I think I’ve had the displeasure of reading.

In time, you learn new strategies, getting smarter than most opponents. It is also much more fun playing with friends and inviting them if they have Fortnite. Other people give the game 2.5 stars but I give it 4.5 stars, because of the amazing experience, 1v1 battles, and Battle Royal.

What to Listen To By: Ashlee Derry An artist that I have enjoyed listening to is Bailey Zimmerman. Zimmerman has had many great songs released among those being Fall In Love, Rock and a Hard Place, and Religiously. These three songs have all reached number one on Billboard Country Airplay. Zimmerman has recently released his first-ever album and is doing phenomenal. During Nashville's 2023 Billboard Country live event Bailey went on to be rewarded with the first-ever Rookie of the Year award. Zimmerman is a very talented artist and we can't wait to hear what he has in store for us in the future.

Students and staff got to vote to see who they thought would win the Super Bowl. In the survey, 83.9% of people voted for the Chiefs and 16.1% voted for the 49ers. Ame Taylor voted for the Chiefs because “They have the better team, and they have the mindset to win.” 87.1% of Staff and students said they would watch the Super Bowl and 12.9% of people said they wouldn't watch it. Senior Carl Ranada said “It felt good because the Chiefs won, but I was surprised they won because they didnt do too good.” The Chiefs still ended up with the win, though. They beat the 49ers 25-22 in overtime. They've won 3 times in the past 5 years.

Scholar Bowl Invited to Golden Oldies Luncheon By: Marshall Jones something like that in the De Kalb community." She also notes that “We get people from Dekalb, Rushville, St. Joseph, and Faucett.” And finally, she says that “If it's your birth month, you can choose a day and get your meal free.”

On Wednesday, January 24, representatives from the Middle and High School Scholar Bowl teams helped serve food during the Golden Oldies luncheon. These representatives include Senior Jayden Schneider, Junior Gavin Moore, 8th grader Brayden Massengale, and 7th graders Parker Pierce and Boston Zabel. In an Interview with Vicki Sampson, She says “Golden Oldies is a bi-monthly gathering of senior citizens who come and eat home-cooked food and spend time with friends.”

The students helped by introducing themselves and their families, as well as plating and serving food and dessert. They also helped clear and pick up chairs. Jayden Schneider says that “It was fun to interact with the community and get to know our neighbors.” He also noted that, “the cooks did very well and the food smelled good.” Thank you, Vicki Sampson, for allowing us students to help serve the community.

She also noted that “I have two people that help me serve lunch which are Jane Hager and Terri Matthews. Kids from the high school also come and help.” Sampson says that Golden Oldies, “was kind of my brainchild. They had the same type of setup over at Faucett, and they had to shut down during Covid. They were supposed to come back, but they didn’t, and I decided that we needed
