BCP AAPS Student Chapter was established under the guidance of our venerable faculty advisor, Dr. Alka Mukne and it is the very first AAPS Student Chapter in Mumbai. We are very privileged to have our Chapter virtually inaugurated by honourable dignitaries; Dr. Andy Vick, Dr. B. Suresh, Dr. Vinod Shah and Dr. Ajit Singh on June 11, 2021. Dr. Mukne has been the pillar of the foundation and because of her, the Student Chapter has managed to provide students with a plethora of professional development activities in the last 6 months.

We aim to provide students with networking opportunities with experts from the industry, career development programs and knowledge upgrading technical events. In addition, we offer regular updates about the various scientific advancements in the pharmaceutical industry and equip them with key 21st-century skills.

It is said that through the toughest moments, comes the greatest power. Undaunted by the hardships of the pandemic, the Student Chapter saw a stupendous number of around 400+ Student member registrations in the last tenure! I can proudly say that students have largely benefitted from the array of activities that we have conducted in the past. As the Chapter continues to grow by organizing many more insightful events, I hope to see the same zeal and involvement this year as well.

The entire team has worked meticulously in bringing out COGNIZANCE, the very first newsletter of the Chapter. I congratulate all of them for their commendable efforts and thank Dr. Alka Mukne for her noteworthy inputs throughout. Assuredly, you will have a wonderful time reading this issue. Stay home. It gives me immense pleasure to present to you our much anticipated newsletter- COGNIZANCE, which is our annual feature for the term 2021.

BCP AAPS Student Chapter was instituted on 11th June, 2021 to provide a platform for students, academicians, research scientists and industry experts for networking and knowledge sharing.

I am obliged to be the Co-founder and the Publications Head of the Chapter. I acquired various professional skills in the process. I must say that the past few months have indeed been memorable and have honed my skillset appreciably.

Connecting and interacting with so many professionals and industry experts has helped me enhance my knowledge.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Dr. Alka Mukne, our faculty advisor for her continued support and guidance.

It is said that "Success is best when it's shared". Keeping this quote in mind, I would like to thank all the committees for their tireless efforts in organizing every event and to all the students participating with the same enthusiasm.

Lastly, I would also like to thank all the individuals who have put in tremendous efforts in collating, drafting and presenting the contents of this newsletter.

GRAND Inauguration Ceremony of BCP AAPS Student Chapter He offered his heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Alka Mukne; the faculty advisor of BCP AAPS Student Chapter, Mr. Nitin Maniar; Chairman, Governing body of Bombay College of Pharmacy, Dr. Krishnapriya Mohanraj; the Principal of Bombay College of Pharmacy and all the students who organised this inaugural event.

The Inauguration ceremony of the BCP AAPS Student Chapter was held on 11th June 2021 at 6:30 pm IST. The session was hosted virtually on Microsoft Teams and live-streamed on YouTube. The total participants exceeded 500 (including Microsoft Teams and YouTube). The program commenced with the traditional lamp lighting, followed by the welcome address which was presented by the Chairperson of the BCP AAPS Student Chapter, Ms. Pratiksha Kakate.

Dr. N Sivaprasad, President of IPA MSB welcomed all the honourable guests and thanked AAPS for instituting this Chapter at Bombay College of Pharmacy.

The function was taken forward by Dr. Nitin Maniar wherein he gave a summary of the student activities at IPA and emphasised the importance of such an international professional Student Chapter being set up at BCP. Following this, Dr. Alka Mukne gave a short overview of the Chapter which included a brief introduction of Bombay College of Pharmacy and the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS).

COGNIZANCE She briefly spoke about the future activities that the Chapter envisions and also introduced the Office Bearers and the Executive Committee Heads. She then introduced the Chief Guest Dr. Andy Wick (President, AAPS) and the Guest of Honour Dr. B. Suresh (Pro-Chancellor, JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, President, Pharmacy Council of India), Mr. Ajit Singh (Chairman, ACGWorld Patron, AAPS Western India Discussion Group) and Dr. Vinod Shah (Pharmaceutical Consultant North Potomac, MD USA). Dr. Vinod Shah was the President of AAPS in 2003 and his speech gave a deeper insight into the functioning of the Chapter and how to gain the most out of this opportunity. He also congratulated the entire team of BCP AAPS SC on the commencement of the Chapter. Our next Guest of Honour was Mr. Ajit Singh. Despite his travel issues and serious network challenges, he made sure his best wishes and wise words reached the BCP AAPS SC team via a recorded video clip. He announced institution of travel grants that would be administered through BCP AAPS Student Chapter and AAPS Western India Discussion Group. These grants would be awarded to students who are interested in traveling for AAPS annual conferences for presenting research papers.

Dr. B Suresh, the Guest of Honour, explained the significance of students connecting with dignitaries and professionals through a platform like this which highlights the best abilities in them and also helps develop leadership quality in them. Furthermore, he extended warm greetings to all the guests, felicitated BCP for establishing an AAPS Student Chapter and wished students good luck for the venture.

Finally, Dr. Andy Vick began by congratulating everyone for having this Chapter instituted at BCP. Using a comprehensive presentation, he elaborated on what AAPS is and its goals and missions. He concluded by welcoming everyone wholeheartedly to the AAPS family.

The Chief Guest, Dr. Andy Vick, Guest of Honour, Dr. B Suresh and Dr. Vinod Shah then formally inaugurated the BCP AAPS Student Chapter. Prof. Arvind Bansal, Mentor of AAPS NIPER Mohali Student Chapter then addressed the gathering. He applauded BCP AAPS Student Chapter, gave a brief overview of the AAPS NIPER Mohali Student Chapter and wished BCP AAPS Student Chapter luck for its future endeavours. Dr. Ramaswamy Lakshmanan, managing director of Sotax India Pvt. Ltd, then shared his thoughts by saying that this initiative will be a huge success in the upcoming years and a lot of students will be benefitted from the same. He complimented Dr. Mukne and gave his kind regards to the entire team of BCP AAPS SC. The ceremony concluded with the Vote of Thanks delivered by the Secretary of BCP AAPS SC, Mr. Aryan Puranik.

INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST DRUG ABUSE & ILLICIT TRAFFICING ONLINE QUIZ 26 JUNE 2021

On the occasion of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed on 26th June, BCP AAPS SC organized an interesting online quiz to spread awareness about the hazardous effects of drug abuse on an individual’s health and to assess their knowledge of drugs. The event was conducted through google forms. More than 180 students participated in the quiz and received their result immediately. Difficulty level of the questions ranged from easy to moderate. The quiz comprised questions related to procurement of narcotics from natural sources, carcinogenic components in a drug, pathological effects, treatments suggested, prevention and cautions to be undertaken during consumption combined dose, and so on. It was an informative and knowledge enriching event for the students.

WORLD HEPATITIS DAY

AWARENESS ACTIVITY 28 JULY 2021

Every year, 28th of July is observed as World Hepatitis Day. BCP AAPS Student Chapter strove to spread awareness about viral hepatitis; an inflammation of the liver that causes severe liver disease and hepatocellular cancer. The Student Chapter spread awareness by sending the Chapter Members an article which highlighted the cause, spread and treatment of hepatitis. The article was prepared by sourcing the contents from various research papers. There are five main strains of the hepatitis virus which are A, B, C, D and E. Together, hepatitis B and C are the most common which result in 1.1 million deaths and 3 million new infections every year. To prevent this life-threatening disease, increasing the radius of awareness and maintaining hygiene is of utmost importance.

MAP IT DOWN In July, BCP AAPS Student Chapter organised a mind map competition titled ‘Map It Down’, an engaging event for students to assess their cognitive abilities, creativity and their ability to portray a chain of thoughts. The participants meticulously drafted a simple yet informative mind map which presented and explained the intricate topics easily.

Topics for the mind map were as follows: – Infectious disease management – Immunotherapy in Oncology – Nutraceuticals’ Role in Lifestyle Diseases Students from various pharmacy colleges actively participated in the event. Dr. Elvis Martis, Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at Bombay College of Pharmacy and Dr. Rachana Kaul, Assistant Professor at Bombay College of Pharmacy, evaluated the received entries. All the winners were presented with a Certificate of Merit.

WORD WAR BCP AAPS Student Chapter conducted a fun event, ‘WORD WAR-Unleash the wordaholic in you’. It was an online event which was conducted on Microsoft Teams. Students from various pharmacy colleges across India enthusiastically participated in the event.

The Main event constituted two rounds, namely: PharmaWiz – This round was similar to the traditional game – Name, Place, Animal, Thing.

Participants were instructed to draw 3 columns titled drug, pharmaceutical company, disease. The participants had to enlist the names in the respective columns according to the random letters that were announced.

Pictionary - In this round, a set of 4 pictures were displayed on the screen. Participants had to unscramble and decipher the letters within allotted time. There were 3 levels, difficulty increasing with each step up.

A bonus round was also conducted to make the event more engaging.

All the winners were presented with a Certificate of Merit.

ROLE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) IN PHARMACY About OUR SPEAKER

Dr. Parizad Elchidana Dr Parizad Elchidana is PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, with additional qualifications in Quality Management Systems, Business Management and Computer Science. She joined ACG as Principal Technical Consultant – Pharma from May 2019.

With an experience of over 3 and half decades in Pharma Industry starting with product development upto commercialization for global markets, she also has a few patents and research publications to her credit.She is also President of Controlled Release Society Indian Chapter and co-chair of AAPS Western India Chapter, Mumbai Discussion Group.

Dr. Parizad is currently the President of BCP Alumni Association.

WEBINAR 23 AUGUST 2021 BCP AAPS Student Chapter organised its first webinar on 23rd August, 2021 on a topic of current interest, ‘Role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Pharmacy’. The eminent speaker of the session was Dr. Parizad Elchidana, Principal Technical Consultant – Pharma, ACG Worldwide. The session was hosted on Microsoft Teams and saw an astounding participation of around 140 students. The session began with the welcome address presented by Ms. Sannidhi Poojary, Vice Chairperson of BCP AAPS Student Chapter.

Dr. Krishna Iyer I/C Principal of Bombay College of Pharmacy then addressed the gathering and briefly summarised the activities conducted by the Chapter in the past. Dr. Parizad started by introducing and defining the term AI and its benefits to humans in general.

She then linked its significance in the pharmaceutical industry by emphasizing on Drug Discovery and Product Development, Molecule Development, Opportunities for Drug Delivery Strategies through AI and AI in Support Functions. She touched upon a case study where an AI dependent app could help detect cataract with almost 91% accuracy. With an elaborate presentation she explained all the intricate points clearly and effectively.

The webinar was followed by an interactive Q&A session.

POSTER PRESENTATION On 18th September, 2021 BCP AAPS Student Chapter organized Poster Presentation as the final event of the tenure. The event was hosted virtually on Microsoft Teams.

The topics for the same were as follows: • 3D Printing in Pharmaceutical Industry • Synthetic and asymmetric methodology • Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) in Geriatrics • Forensic applications of phytotoxins The event was conducted in two stages: Firstly, abstract Submission- Students were required to submit an abstract based on any one topic chosen. Secondly, presenting the Poster – Selected students had to present the poster on 18th September.

This was followed by a Q&A session by the judges. The esteemed judges for the event were Dr. Dipti Gatne, Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Analysis at Bombay College of Pharmacy and Dr. Vivek Dhawan, The Then Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutics at Bombay College of Pharmacy.

PHARMYTH BUSTERS World Pharmacists Day is observed and celebrated every year on 25th September with great enthusiasm. It is a day dedicated to Pharmacists for their significant role in improving global health. The theme for World Pharmacists Day this year was “Pharmacy: Always trusted for your health”. On this occasion, BCP AAPS Student Chapter organized ‘Pharmyth Busters', an exhilarating event to assess their knowledge of Pharmaceutical Myths and Facts. Two days prior to World Pharmacists Day, the Chapter Members were presented with 10 statements and were required to segregate them into Myths and Facts. This event was conducted via Google Forms. The statements were from diverse pharmaceutical topics such as compounded medicines, vaccines, herbal supplements and generic drugs. Finally, on the World Pharmacists Day, all the Chapter Members were sent an article that had the statements categorically segregated into Myths and Facts. This activity attempted to bust the general pharmaceutical myths and educate our Chapter Members with verified facts.

NATIONAL BIOTECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE AAPS’ popular NBC will follow a trackbased structure. The NBC will also offer a Career Development Program focused on developing management and leadership skills as well as a Career Fair and other options to help jobhunters.

The overarching theme for this year’s NBC is the concept of understanding how we can let science and innovation lead us in accelerating and improving our biotechnology drug development processes. The three tracks each explore different settings that create paradigm-challenging circumstances to the “business as usual” of biotechnology drug development because they do not fit into established processes.
