WELCOME Welcome to the Professional Enhancement Program!

Thank

you

Broward

agreeing

College

to

serve

Professional

as

a

mentor for

Enhancement

the

Program.

The program pairs students with peer mentors, alumni mentors, and master mentors. Throughout the year, our interns

engage

in

special

projects,

internships,

experiences, and service opportunities that allow them to apply theoretical knowledge and skills in a practical setting.

This academic year, our theme is “Conflict Resolution.” Most view conflicts as bad. However, conflicts in life are inevitable. They can provide great opportunities

for

examining

events,

issues,

and

hidden

issues.

If

the

process of resolving conflicts transforms all involved, why not use them as opportunities for positivity, creativity, and growth. COVID-19 is one of the greatest threats to our world. It has made it abundantly clear that we need each other, and that positive collective action is indispensable. In that regard, you will be challenged to understand more about teamwork and

real-world

applications,

as

well

as

develop

communication

and

leadership skills, while growing as young professionals.

This

handbook

was

developed

to

give

you

a

overview

of

the

program. Please review it and let us know how we can assist you as you serve our students. Again, thank you for serving in the role of a mentor this semester. We are grateful for your commitment of time, expertise, and energy.

Sincerely, Lulrick Balzora Dean of the Social Behavioral Sciences & Human Services Broward College

EXPECTATIONS

MENTOR GOALS AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES Assist students in completing their projects, certificates, and training. Provide guidance and feedback as students conceptualize ideas. Keep students on track and help them meet deadlines.

MENTOR RESPONSABILITIES The acronym of our expectations for mentors is T.E.A.C.H.

T - TIME/ TALENTS/ AND TREASURES Determine how much time you can afford to spend together with your protégé. The number of meetings is not prescribed. Each student and mentor are expected to determine the amount of time they wish to meet. Determine

what

unique

specialization

or

expertise

that

you

can

offer

to

your

protégé. Determine what resources that you can offer to your protégé (ex. Special contacts, information concerning scholarships, job or internship reference).

E - ESTABLISH EXPLANATIONS AND EXPECTATIONS Establish ground-rules Explain ground-rules Establish clear expectations and consequences for not abiding by ground-rules.

A - ASSESSMENTS/ ANSWERS Learn about your protégé’s priorities and objectives. Provide your protégé answers to basic questions or refer them to the proper source for their questions.

C – COMMUNICATE/ COLLABORATE Create a schedule for meeting and communicating Create opportunities for collaboration

H – HELPFULNESS/ HOPEFULNESS Be a source of “Help” for your protégé

Be a source of “Hope” for your protégé

Please Note: Although mentors will be following up with student leaders, the Program Coordinator and Peer Leaders will work to make sure that all work is being completed in a timely fashion. The Program Coordinator

HOW PEP WORKS PEP Interns are assigned to what we call P.I.E.S. which stands for:

PROJECTS o Lean Six Sigma Project o Bougainvillea House (Mental Health) o Elite Foundation (Anti-human Trafficking) o Dept. of Justice (Dialogues on Race)

INTERNSHIPS o Psychology Lab o Oral History Lab o GIS Lab o BMI Lab

EXPERIENCES o Weekly Seminars o Conferences o Lauderdale Lead o Elite Foundation Gala

SERVICE o Anti Human Trafficking Service Project o Special volunteer activities

It is expected the intern works on their PIES to achieve an outcome designed by them and their lead, mentor or any other professional they may work with or under. It is encouraged that interns take initiative to create their own projects and opportunities related to PIES.
