WELCOME TO PEP Congratulations on your acceptance to PEP. Throughout the year, you will engage in special projects, internships, experiences, and service opportunities. These experiences allow you to apply the theoretical knowledge and skills you will gain in a practical setting, making your learning more relevant and valuable.

As you embark on your journey of purposeful living, we have assigned you two relevant books: HBR's Guide to Crafting Your Purpose and John C. Maxwell's The Power of Significance.

In HBR's Guide to Crafting Your Purpose, you'll discover that purpose isn't something you find; it's something you build. Similarly, The Power of Significance teaches that everyone has the potential to lead a significant life, regardless of their status or resources. Maxwell outlines practical steps to help you identify your "why" and make meaningful contributions that resonate with your values.

As PEP Interns, you are in a prime position to maximize life's opportunities and minimize your excuses. It may be challenging at times. However, if you feel overworked or need guidance, please remember that you can always contact me, your leaders, and your peers in the PEP. The program is not meant to compete with your responsibilities. We are here to provide the skills and resources to help you succeed as a student and in your future careers. In short, we are committed to standing and working with you as teammates.

The Senior Lead Interns serve as the student coordinators and supervisors for the Lead Interns. Their responsibilities include Overseeing and guiding the Lead Interns in their duties, ensuring consistency in the internship program across all groups, and organizing regular check-ins with the Lead Interns to monitor progress, provide support, and assist in the development and improvement of the internship program.

Lead Interns are responsible for directly supervising and supporting groups of interns. Their duties include: Helping interns complete their orientation process.

Guiding interns through their assignments and projects.

Conducting regular check-ins with their assigned group of interns.

Addressing any issues or concerns raised by interns.

Conducting mid-term and final evaluations of their assigned interns.

Reporting progress and any significant matters to the Senior Lead Interns.

Facilitating team-building activities and fostering a positive internship experience.

Both roles are crucial in ensuring a structured, supportive, and enriching professional development program that promotes the growth and development of all participants.

INTRODUCTION There are many types of internships. An Internship is one of the best ways to gain professional experiences, while also enhancing your resume.

Additionally, it is a great way to acquaint yourself with the opportunities and challenges within an industry, while learning universal values like responsibility, accountability, and teamwork.

The SBSHS Professional Enhancement Program (PEP), is a unique internship which pairs Broward College students with Broward College leaders and community professionals to gain experience and knowledge in their intended fields of study and/or careers. Internship providers who participate in the program share their time and talent to give interns meaningful, career-related experiences.

"Purposeful Living"

As you embark on your journey of purposeful living, we have assigned you two relevant books that will provide valuable insights and practical guidance: HBR's Guide to Crafting Your Purpose by John Coleman and John C. Maxwell's The Power of Significance.

HBR's Guide to Crafting Your Purpose In this helpful guide, John Coleman challenges the conventional wisdom about purpose. He argues that purpose isn't something you discover but actively build and cultivate.

The book debunks three common myths about purpose: That purpose is found That you have only one purpose That purpose remains static over time Coleman provides a framework for crafting your purpose, offering practical exercises and strategies.

The Power of Significance by John C. Maxwell Complementing Coleman's approach, John C. Maxwell's The Power of Significance offers a compelling perspective on leading a life of purpose and impact.

Key insights from Maxwell's book include: Defining significance: Understanding that true significance comes from adding value to others' lives The "Why" factor: Identifying your personal mission and core values Overcoming limitations: Recognizing and surpassing selfimposed barriers Creating a legacy: Focusing on long-term impact rather than short-term success Developing a “significance” mindset: Shifting from selfcentered thinking to others-centered living.

Maxwell asserts that everyone has the potential to lead a significant life, regardless of their current status, resources, or circumstances.

MENTOR EXPECTATIONS

MENTOR/MENTEE GOALS AND EXPECTATIONS Mentor provide guidance and feedback as your mentees/protégés conceptualize their future goals and professional aspirations.

Mentors dedicate 3-5 hrs. monthly or as needed with mentees/protégés.

Mentors Dedicate 7 months with mentees/ protégés.

TIME/TALENTS/ AND TREASURES

Determine how much time you can afford to spend together with your protégé.

Determine what specialization or expertise that you can offer to your protégé.

Determine what resources that you can offer to your protégé (ex. Special contacts, information concerning scholarships, job or internship reference).

Mentee Expectations: Make initial contact and follow-up with mentor. Prepare relevant and appropriate questions for initial meetings.

ESTABLISH EXPLANATIONS AND EXPECTATIONS Establish and explain ground-rules with protege.

Establish clear expectations and consequences for not abiding by ground-rules.

Mentee Expectation: Be prepared to negotiate time and schedule with mentor.

ASSESSMENTS/ANSWERS Learn about your protégé’s priorities and objectives.

Provide your protégé answers to basic questions or make appropriate references.

Provide opportunities for protege to meet people in their desired field.

Mentee Expectation: Process and provide after-reports for any guidance or assignments.

Mentee Expectations: Be helpful to other students in the program and share what they are learning from their mentorship experience.

LEAD INTERN EXPECTATIONS

The Professional Enhancement Program exists to enhance and complement your educational success, as well as provides opportunities for strategic leadership. As a lead intern, you assist students with their internship, work-based learning experience, and corporate partnerships for job placements. Additionally, you are required to exemplify the characteristics and attributes necessary for your interns to model.

In addition to the training and documents required for interns, lead interns also need to complete the following:

TRAINING WEEKLY REPORTS Weekly reports are primary forum to communicate your progress, benefits, concerns, and overall experience in the program as well the progress of your team with the senior lead. Weekly reports are a vital part of mid-term and final evaluations.

EVALUATIONS Your successful completion of all requirements on or before deadlines is critical. Lead interns are required to objectively evaluate each intern based on the PEP competencies and assignment completion. Lead interns are responsible for scheduling evaluations with their interns and completing all evaluations by the deadline. Lead interns will be evaluated the week following intern evaluation dates.

LEAN SIX SIGMA YELLOW BELT Provide Interns a 3-day training program with a management certification. Provide PEP interns with an introduction to fundamental improvement tools and classroom exercises to demonstrate application. Use a 3 day format that allows interns to receive their certificate provided they attend all three days and participate in the exercises

BC SOCIAL VALUES ACADEMY The Social Value Academy is masterclass in social value for those working in commissioning, procurement, and as providers of goods and services. You will learn from the leading experts in the field and from practical, real-life examples how to use and implement the Social Value Act

PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION Your successful completion of all requirements on or before deadlines is critical.

Requirement deadlines are listed in the Program Calendar at the end of this handbook. Also, two to three times per semester, the lead interns will conduct an evaluation of your performance and progress as a leader.

PEP performance evaluations are based on the areas below: • Training (S. Harassment and Equal Op) • Document Submissions (bio, resume, Ed plan, scholarship plan, business card, PIES plan, and schedule) • Participation and attendance (Weekly and monthly meetings) • Weekly Reports, Communication skills, Interest level, Motivation, Reliability, Progress made toward development of projects.

At the end of the internship program, you will be given the opportunity to evaluate your internship, as well as the provider.

HOW PEP WORKS PEP Interns are assigned to what we call P.I.E.S. which stands for: PROJECTS Develop teamwork through group projects INTERNSHIPS Develop your professional and networking skills through our internship opportunities EXPERIENCES Develop your leadership and public speaking skills through social experiences SERVICE Give back to the community through service learning It is expected the intern works on their PIES to achieve an outcome designed by them and their lead, mentor or any other professional they may work with or under.

AWARDS & RECOGNITIONS PEP honors successful completion of the program, as well as individuals and organizations for outstanding service to their community. These service efforts take many forms, including volunteer time, charitable giving and for doing visionary work to solve pressing challenges, and create a brighter future for Broward College students and alumni.

INTERN EXPECTATIONS

The Professional Enhancement Program exists to enhance and complement your educational success. Indicators of successful participation and completion of the program include consistent academic achievement, active participation in the program, and aspirations for continuing education beyond Broward College.

ORIENTATION TRAINING SEXUAL HARASSMENT

Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitutes sexual harassment.

LEADERSHIP TRAINING FLORIDA SOFT SKILLS CERTIFICATE The Ready to Work Courseware is ideal for measuring the competency in foundational skills that focus on the core communication, reasoning, and problem-solving skills required for 21st century opportunities, from entry-level to professional.

ASSIGNMENTS WEEKLY REPORTS

Weekly reports are the primary forum to communicate and keep us informed of your progress, benefits, concerns, and overall experience in the program. Weekly reports are a vital part of mid-term and final intern evaluations and intern rankings.

EVALUATIONS

Your successful completion of all requirements on or before deadlines is critical.

Evaluations will be completed by the lead intern for the intern(s) in their team. PEP performance evaluations are based on conveying professionalism; communicating effectively; teamwork and collaboration; critical thinking and problem solving.

BIOGRAPHY

A Biography provides a snapshot of who you are, your education, background, and the way you relate to the industry you are aiming to build a relationship with in an engaging way.

RESUME

A resume is a summary of your qualifications, skills, and achievements. It conveys your accomplishments and what you can bring to the position and the company.

BUSINESS CARDS

Your business card allows you to share your contact with other professionals. This form of networking could lead to new opportunities, such as a job or internship.

EDUCATIONAL/SCHOLARSHIP PLAN

Your Educational Plan outlines the classes required for your major and transfer university. Following the educational plan outlined by your advisor can save you time and money.

PROFESSIONAL HEADSHOTS

A professional headshot is a portrait of the person used as a image, wearing a suit or a classic office-wear outfit.

ONE PROFESSIONAL ATTIRE/OUTFIT

Professional Attire presents a visual image and sends a message that the employees.

Generally one wears conservative clothing to portray yourself in a professional manner.

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

PROJECTS/LABS Mentors are encouraged to provide input for existing projects and help create new projects that may benefit the students in the program.

SOCIAL VALUES ACADEMY

SVA

The Principles of Social Value provide the basic building blocks for making decisions, in order to increase expected returns on investment (ROI), improve wellbeing and increase sustainability. Student use generally accepted social accounting principles and apply them on their projects for a better understanding of the skills of forecasting and analyzing the outcomes of the art of risk taking.

PSG: END THE DEMAND

Students work with local organizations and sponsor anti-human trafficking initiatives such as the Walk for Awareness Campaign and annual youth conferences for high school, colleges and university students. PEP interns also work with the department of homeland security to offer education and prevention webinars that create awareness in higher education.

ORAL HISTORY

Oral History is for students who enjoy engaging with community members, the research process and conducting interviews will be assigned to the Oral History Lab. The Lab helps the Oral History director plan and coordinate special interviews, mini-conferences, and promote experiential learning certificates.

PRACTICAL OPPORTUNITIES

INTERNSHIPS Mentors are encouraged to provide internship opportunities for students.

Note: summer internships allow students maximum flexibility for internships.

PSYCHOLOGY LAB

SIMULATION CENTER

The Psychology Lab is for those interested in research. The lab assists with planning research and engaging in forums in which students work in semi-structured focus groups.

The Simulation Center (HSSC), is a educational facility that models a hospital setting. It is designed to provide students with a safe learning environment where they transfer theory into hands-on practice.

GIS LAB

BMI LAB

Geographic Information systems Lab (GIS) works as a catalyst for creative thought and problem-solving skills and facilitates spatial reasoning. Students who love working with technology will be assigned to the GIS Lab to find solutions to real world challenges that benefit their community.

The Brain Machine Interface Lab allows students to explore the ethical implications and current and future applications of BMI. Students will engage in discussions that relate to translating neuronal information into computer commands.

NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES

EXPERIENCES Mentors are encouraged to invite students to experience shadowing opportunities in professional, celebratory, and conference settings.

WEEKLY WORKSHOPS

PILLARS CONFERENCE

PEP students meet weekly on Fridays at 11:00am to engage in forums that focus on teamwork and the art of risk taking, along with current issues and events. PEP mentors and leaders in the community often lead the discussions.

The four-day conference is the final PEP event of the year (8/8/2024 -8/11, 2024).

It is a collaborative effort that provides experiences for leaders to maximize their opportunities to strengthen their sense of global purpose, personal well-being and individual resilience.

INTERNATIONAL

FLORIDA READY TO WORK

Broward College has several International Centers around the world.

Students take courses taught in English typically by local faculty in the host country. This means PEP interns are able to collaborate with peers with different perspectives from team-mates from and in different countries.

PEP interns must complete The Florida Soft Skills training, which features highly interactive digital training focused on in-demand employability and leadership skills, including, communicating effectively, teamwork, , and thinking critically and solving problems. Student who successfully complete the training receive a certificate signed by the governor of Florida.

PHILANTHROPIC OPPORTUNITIES

SERVICE Mentors are encouraged to promote and challenge students to use their projects as service opportunities and engage in service work with mentors.

PILLARS CONFERENCE

Mentors are invited to attend the annual conference to be held on August 8th and 9th, 2024 (remotely via Zoom) and August 10th and 11th, 2024 (remotely via Zoom or in-person at the Pillars Hotel) This year, our theme is “The Art of the Risk Taking.” In other words, make the most of the present, which is the only moment which holds true power. In the next few months, we will meet weekly to examine different scenarios for success, focusing attention on and investing our energy and prioritizing the areas in which we have influence.

Our goal is to provide a peaceful and effective forum for students as leaders to strengthen their sense of global purpose, personal well-being, and individual resilience. As we adjust to the realities of wars, conflicts, and global pandemic, we hope the 15th Pillars Conference achieves its objective. In so doing, we hope to help all maximize the Art of Risk Taking!

All PEP interns/mentees must present the outcomes of their projects at the conference.

Mentors may consider supporting the conference in various ways, such as scholarships.

PILLARS CONFERENCE

The Pillars Hotel is ideally situated right on the Intracoastal Waterway. It offers a casually elegant and charming experience in the prime of the most renowned Florida beach and yachting town. PEP students are treated to an exceptional level of individual service and luxury reminiscent of the finest European boutique inns. This is a first-time experience for many students.

Key features of the conference include gourmet dining in The Secret Garden restaurant during the final night at the Award Ceremony, in which recipients are awarded student Pillars, Faculty Pillars, Alumni Pillars and Service Pillars of the Community Awards.
