Endless Summer Light

There was a time when summers in the Philippines meant waking up without a plan and falling asleep with sunburned skin and a full heart.
Back then, the days stretched long and unhurried. Mornings began with the sound of slippers on pavement, the clink of ice in a glass of gulaman, and the promise of mischief just outside the front door. Whether it was riding on the back of a tricycle through dusty provincial roads or catching fish with bare hands in the river, every moment felt like a small miracle. And perhaps what made it so unforgettable was that it asked nothing of us but our attention.
As we welcome this summer issue, we return to the idea that the best things in life are free. Not just free of cost, but free of expectations. Free of schedules. Free of screens. These are the memories that live on the longest. The breeze through the open windows of a childhood home. The echo of a cousin’s voice calling you to merienda. The quiet comfort of a sunset that needed no filter and no audience.
In this collection of travel stories and lifestyle features, we invite you to revisit that feeling. You’ll find destinations that celebrate nature in its rawest form, local communities that welcome you like family, and experiences that nourish not only the senses but the soul. Whether you are planning a road trip to the highlands or a retreat by the sea, let this be your reminder that sometimes the richest travels are the ones where simplicity takes the lead.
Here’s to the season of rediscovery. To laughter without reason. To slow days and sun-warmed skin. To a Philippine summer that always knows how to bring us home to what matters most.

Island Days and Ocean Views: My Trip to Boracay
by Kira Haynie

To kick off the new year, my partner and I embarked on a roughly 20-hour journey to the Philippines for a good friend’s wedding. Long plane rides are nothing new to me, but reaching the island of Boracay required three flights and a boat ride. Fortunately, everything aligned smoothly, and we made each leg of the trip without delays.
When we arrived in Boracay, we were exhausted, but the sight of turquoise waters and swaying palm trees instantly revived us. We checked in at our resort, Alta Vista, quickly freshened up, and set out to explore the nearby area. The surrounding town was lively and welcoming—polite locals greeted us, children laughed as they played, and we passed by dogs, cats, and chickens roaming freely. My partner even got to try Jollibee for the first time, which felt like a rite of passage in the Philippines.
The following morning, we woke to the unexpected sound of monkeys right outside our balcony. After grabbing some towels, we made our way to Puka Shell Beach, a more peaceful alternative to White Beach. We spent the day lounging under the sun, cooling off in the choppy sea, and admiring the many intricate sandcastles and sculptures along the shore. That evening, we ventured to D’Mall for the first time—the bustling heart of the island, full of shops, restaurants, and energy. On the day of the wedding, we started with an authentic Filipino breakfast at the hotel before enjoying some time

in the infinity pool. The wedding, held at the luxurious Shangri-La, was a breathtaking blend of elegance and Filipino warmth. With the ocean as a backdrop, the couple exchanged vows and later danced the night away under the stars.
Other highlights from the trip included hiking up Mount Luho for panoramic island views, swimming out to Willy’s Rock, and trying scuba diving for the first time with Wicked Squid Divers—an unforgettable experience that left us both thrilled and proud.
Before heading home, we spent a night in Manila where I was finally able to meet a remote coworker who lives in the Philippines. We stayed in Makati, near the Greenbelt area, which impressed us with its modern design and vibrant atmosphere.

As I reflect on the trip, I already miss the ube-flavored treats, the laid-back island lifestyle, and, most of all, the kindness and warmth of the local people. I truly hope life brings me back to the Philippines one day.

Why Sunset Watching Holds a Special Place in Filipino Travel Culture
by Billy De La Cruz
In the Philippines, sunsets are not just daily sky shows. They’re emotional events—a moment to pause, reflect, and breathe in the colors of the archipelago. Whether it’s a romantic evening stroll, a quiet meditation, or a vibrant beach party, the Filipino sunset acts as a universal punctuation mark to the day. And with more than 7,000 islands, the country is never short of scenic backdrops.
WEST-FACING WONDERS
Palawan, consistently ranked among the world’s most beautiful islands, offers sunset lovers an endless canvas.
In El Nido, the jagged limestone cliffs frame the sinking sun in dramatic silhouettes. Over in Coron, watching the sun dip behind the karst formations of Kayangan Lake is a quiet spectacle. On the west coast of Cebu, the town of Moalboal gifts viewers with fire-orange skies reflected on the surface of its coral-filled waters.
On the island of Siquijor, the sunsets take on an almost mystical quality. Locals speak of the “golden hour” as a magical time—not just for its beauty, but for the calm it brings. San Juan, with its long shoreline and sleepy beach bars, is the ideal perch.
METRO MANILA’S SURPRISING SUNSET SPOTS
Even in the chaos of city life, sunset magic finds a way. Manila Bay remains a classic, despite the traffic and commercial build-up. The view from the Baywalk or even a rooftop bar in Pasay can turn a hectic day into a golden memory. For a quieter urban experience, the sunset seen from the hills of Antipolo or the trails of La Mesa Eco Park offers a peaceful glow.
WHY THE FILIPINO SUNSET IS MORE THAN JUST A VIEW
For many, watching the sunset in the Philippines is less about sightseeing and more about soul-centering. It’s a form of ritual, a silent goodbye to the day. In recent years, sunset yoga sessions and mindful sunset retreats have emerged, especially in island destinations like Siargao and Bohol. These events blend local hospitality with wellness tourism, drawing both foreign travelers and city-weary locals.
CHASING LIGHT: HOW SUNSETS SHAPE TRAVEL ITINERARIES
Tour guides and hotels are beginning to capitalize on this natural attraction, offering sunset packages that include boat rides, cliffside dinners and even photography lessons. This has transformed the simple act of watching the sun into a curated experience. In some locations, such as Panglao or Pagudpud, sunset chasing is now listed as a key travel itinerary highlight. In the Philippines, every sunset feels personal. With each descent of the sun, travelers are reminded of the beauty that exists between moments. Whether you’re perched on a mountaintop, stretched out on a beach or watching from a city balcony, a Filipino sunset offers something intangible. It grounds. It connects. It heals.

Find Your Way Back Home: How OFW
Nathanael Nunag Rediscovers the Philippines, One Province at a Time
by Billy De La Cruz
When Nathanael Nunag first left his small rural hometown, he carried with him more than just a suitcase—he brought the wonder of a boy who used to flip through encyclopedias, dreaming of far-off places. That curiosity never left him. Years later, as an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) now based in Australia and the voice behind Travelling Peoples, a blog and digital storytelling platform, Nunag has achieved something rare and extraordinary: he has traveled to all 80 provinces and cities of the Philippines. This personal milestone speaks to the heart of his mission—to inspire fellow Filipinos, especially those overseas, to explore their own country with the same excitement reserved for foreign lands.
“I’m really glad you chose to travel while you were young— it gave you so many amazing experiences and opened a lot of doors,” he reflects, as if offering advice to his 24-year-old self. “Still, no regrets—just lessons.”
His journey is more than just a personal checklist. It’s a homecoming in installments, a love letter to the archipelago stitched together by jeepney rides, ferry crossings, hotel stays, and kind encounters. At the heart of it all is a message that resonates deeply with the global Filipino: no matter how far we roam, we always find our way home.
TRAVELING IN COMFORT, EARNING EVERY MILE
Unlike the backpacker narrative many associate with longterm travel, Nunag chose a different path.
“Like many OFWs, I believe that after years of hard work, we deserve to travel in style—turning each trip into a well-earned reward,” he told Balikbayan Magazine in an interview.
He funneled his savings not into flashy material goods but into experiences that allowed him to fully savor

destination. From hotel stays to immersive cultural experiences, his approach redefines what it means to travel meaningfully and responsibly.
Behind the curated social media posts lies a simple truth.
“People often assume I must have a lot of money to be able to travel, but what they don’t see are the sacrifices behind the scenes. I keep things super simple—like, I pretty much live in the same black shirt and denim pants.”
It’s this authenticity that powers his platform, Travelling Peoples, a digital space filled with stories that go beyond
Fresh from a night shift, Nunag flew to Batanes—exhausted yet elated. Despite the lack of sleep, the island’s raw beauty awakened his every sense.
Captured in the breathtaking Marlboro Country of Batanes— where rolling hills meet the vast sea, and even the cows seem to pause and admire the view. A true masterpiece crafted by nature. each

Photographed at the stunning Hundred Islands—an ideal destination for OFWs seeking connection and calm. Sharing this moment with loved ones brought a rare chance to reflect, recharge, and simply be present.
picture-perfect beaches and instead tell of forgotten folklore, humble meals, and the joy of getting lost. His background in Literature and Asian Studies deepens this storytelling. “It’s not just about the place, but the deeper story behind it.”
SEEING HOME THROUGH NEW EYES
The beauty of travel, especially for those who’ve lived abroad, lies in perspective. For Nunag, revisiting the Philippines wasn’t just about ticking off destinations. It was about rediscovery.
“Meeting people in remote, beautiful islands who’ve never really left their hometowns made me think of my late grandmother. She never got the chance to visit places like Visayas or Mindanao, even though I feel like she would’ve loved to travel.”
That memory shaped his mission—to inspire others to explore, not out of envy but empowerment.
“I try to stay grateful for every trip I take, and I hope my
journey inspires others, not makes them feel left out or discouraged.”
It’s a gentle yet powerful reminder: travel doesn’t have to be grand to be transformative. Even a weekend in an unfamiliar barangay or a leisurely walk through a provincial capital can reconnect us to our roots.
NOT JUST GATEWAYS, BUT DESTINATIONS
While many balikbayans still think of Manila as the default entry point into the country, Nunag has a different message: explore through Clark and Cebu.
“I’ve got a soft spot for Clark and Cebu because I feel like more people need to know how convenient and worldclass their airports are,” he shares. “They’re less crowded and less stressful. Plus, there are so many beautiful spots nearby that are worth exploring.”
It’s not just about logistics. Both cities have taken strides to present themselves not merely as stopovers, but as cultural destinations in their own right. “When you land there, it’s not just a gateway to other places—it’s a chance to dive into the local vibe right away, from the food to the festivals to the way people welcome you.”
And if you’ve only got 48 hours? Nunag recommends making it count with a staycation. “Go for a relaxing stay in one of their world-class hotels, and enjoy the food—Clark’s Kapampangan Sisig and Cebu’s Lechon are musts. Even with a short stay, you can still get a real taste of the culture.”
ANGELS ALONG THE WAY
Through his years of travel, Nunag has met what he calls “millions of angels.” These aren’t mythical beings, but everyday people who changed his journey in quiet, meaningful ways. “There have been so many small moments—someone offering directions, sharing a meal, or just giving a smile when I needed it most.”
In a world that often feels fast-paced and transactional, these moments ground his work. “It reminds me of that quote, ‘In a world where you can be anything, be kind.’ It’s those kinds of people—those ‘angels’—that have helped shape my journey in the best way.”
It’s this human connection that he believes sets his content apart. “By telling my own stories—what I felt, what I noticed, even the small things—I’m already offering something unique.”
A meaningful visit to the historic Barasoain Church, with the flags of the Katipunan waving in the background—a striking reminder of the nation’s enduring fight for freedom and identity.

HOME IS A MOVING DESTINATION
Now based in Australia with his wife Liezel, Nunag’s life has entered a new chapter. But even from afar, the Philippines calls him back. “After this chapter in Australia, I’d really love to take a sentimental trip back to the Philippines— visit each province again and document how things have changed. It feels like a full-circle moment.”
Traveling together has only strengthened their bond. “It’s a great way to really get to know each other—how we handle stress, how we enjoy little things, and even how we solve problems on the go.”
From their first summer plane ride to Boracay to quiet sunsets in Tawi-Tawi, each shared experience reinforces what matters most: presence, connection, and the joy of discovery.
INSPIRING THE NEXT WAVE
With nearly a decade of content behind him, Nunag still sees himself as a work in progress. For aspiring travel creators, especially those starting with little more than a smartphone and a dream, he offers a simple but powerful roadmap.
“If you’re serious about it, invest in a decent gadget, even if it means getting one through a small loan. But more than gear, stay consistent, stay curious, and tell stories that feel true to you.”
His hope for Travelling Peoples is that it leaves behind a digital legacy that pushes Filipinos—wherever they may be—to explore, not someday, but now. “Life can be unpredictable, and sometimes we wait too long and miss our chance.”
A RETURN TO JOY
There’s something about summer in the Philippines that makes it easier to remember who we are. Nunag feels it too. “I always love going back during summer—it’s usually typhoon-free, so it’s easier to travel around and really experience the beauty of each place.”
Among all the destinations he’s visited, he holds a special fondness for the underrated. “Tawi-Tawi is incredibly beautiful and peaceful. Visiting helps shift those narratives and shows the real charm of the place.”
And if he had to choose a favorite tradition? “Santa Cruzan

in May. It’s such a beautiful mix of faith, tradition, and pageantry. People really go all out. It adds a really special vibe to summer.”
COMING HOME, AGAIN AND AGAIN
For Nunag, travel is more than just movement. It’s a means of rediscovering identity, of preserving stories, and of reminding us that even as we fly far, we always have a home waiting—sometimes in a province we’ve never been to, sometimes in a familiar dish, sometimes in the smile of a stranger.
In a world that often glorifies leaving, his story is a powerful reminder of the beauty in returning. Because wherever Filipinos may end up, we never forget how to find our way home.
And for those still waiting to take that trip? He leaves us with this:
“Just go for it—travel while you can. Don’t keep putting it off. Make those memories now, not someday.”
Follow Nunag’s journey at @travellingpeoples and rediscover the Philippines, one heartfelt story at a time.
Taking a moment to enjoy a touch of luxury before the next adventure begins. “To fellow OFWs—this is a reminder that indulging in a luxury stay in the Philippines is not only possible, but well-deserved,” Nunag shares.
Immersed in the vibrant culture of Lake Sebu, dressed in authentic T’boli attire at the Lotus Garden. A beautiful tribute to the heritage and craftsmanship of one of Mindanao’s proud indigenous communities.

The Place That Knows You: Where Comfort Finds Its Shore at Tambuli Seaside Resort and Spa
by Billy De La Cruz

There are destinations that dazzle—and there are those that stay with you. Tambuli Seaside Resort and Spa belongs to the latter. Tucked into a quiet cove on Mactan Island, it doesn’t clamor for attention with spectacle or noise. Instead, it speaks in softer tones through the rustle of palms, the hush of tides, and the unmistakable feeling that this is where you were meant to be.
Tambuli doesn’t try to reinvent the Filipino beach resort concept. It simply returns to what matters: space, comfort, and a sense of home. The name itself, tambuli, is a call from tradition—a native horn once used to gather communities, to signal safety, reunion, and belonging. That call is still heard here, only now it’s woven into the architecture, the welcome, and the slow rhythm of everyday resort life.
For balikbayans, weary city dwellers, or anyone who’s been too far from salt air and quiet mornings, Tambuli offers something deeper than a vacation. It offers return not just to place, but to self.
“As Filipinos, we’re always being called back to where we belong,” says Bea Samantha Esteves, Marketing Communications Manager. “Tambuli was built around that idea. Whether you’re a balikbayan, a family planning a reunion, or a traveler in search of soul over spectacle, this is a place that remembers you.”
UNHURRIED DAYS ON UNCROWDED SHORES
Esteves describes Tambuli in three carefully chosen words that guests consistently echo: serene, spacious, and refreshing. These aren’t marketing buzzwords but lived experiences that differentiate

Tambuli from the cluttered resort landscape of Cebu.
“Tambuli is the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city,” Esteves shares. “Tucked in a lush tropical setting with its own private beach and calming sea breeze, it instantly puts you at ease. There’s no noisy crowds or overwhelming attractions here—just pure, laid-back vibes where you can truly unwind and enjoy nature’s quiet charm.”
The spaciousness is immediately apparent. Spanning over four hectares of amenity area within the larger 11-hectare community, the resort offers generous breathing room that has become increasingly rare in today’s travel landscape. From wide beachfront stretches to expansive pools and manicured gardens, guests never feel the claustrophobia that plagues many popular destinations.
This commitment to space extends to the accommodations themselves. The service apartments—ranging from Deluxe Studios to Two Bedroom Premier Suites—encapsulate what Esteves calls “the modern conveniences of home in a resort setting.” Each unit features thoughtful amenities including a 5-foot refrigerator, induction stove, microwave, and complete cooking facilities, acknowledging that today’s travelers, especially longer-staying balikbayans, appreciate the flexibility of preparing their own meals while maintaining the luxury resort experience.
WHERE THE JOURNEY LEADS BACK TO YOU
Perhaps nowhere is Tambuli’s unique positioning more evident than in its approach to serving overseas

Filipinos. While many resorts simply market to balikbayans as an afterthought, Tambuli has woven their homecoming narrative into its very DNA.
The resort’s Balikbayan Promo, starting at PHP 7,688 net for a minimum two-night stay, includes practical touches that demonstrate understanding of the balikbayan experience like a buffet breakfast and complimentary airport transfers. But the real value lies in the intangible elements: the warm greetings from Filipino staff who understand the nuances of homecoming, the carefully crafted dining experiences that feature both Asian and international cuisine, and the setting that manages to feel both elevated and familiar.
“Tambuli combines contemporary and modern architecture with natural landscapes and sleek amenities,” Esteves explains. “It’s a place where guests can reconnect with their roots while enjoying the comforts of modern travel.”
WHERE CELEBRATIONS COME TOGETHER
While leisure travel often dominates resort marketing, Tambuli has quietly positioned itself as the ideal destination for meaningful gatherings of all kinds. The spacious layout and service apartment concept create natural advantages that extend far beyond traditional hotel stays, making it perfect for family reunions, class reunions, corporate retreats, and milestone celebrations where groups need both communal spaces and private accommodations.
“Tambuli has long been known among locals as a beloved spot for family gatherings and reunions,” Esteves notes, highlighting the resort’s deep roots in Filipino celebration culture. The four-hectare amenity area strikes a balance that traditional hotels struggle to achieve. It provides multiple venues for large group activities, while the service apartments allow extended families or classmates to stay comfortably together while maintaining individual privacy.
The Day Use Package, priced at PHP 1,800 on weekdays and PHP 2,000 on weekends, offers exceptional value for groups planning reunions or celebrations. The package includes PHP 1,100 worth of food consumables per adult on weekdays, access to swimming facilities from 9 AM to 5 PM, complimentary pool towels, locker access, and 30 minutes of non-motorized watersports—creating opportunities for both organized group activities and organic bonding moments that make reunions truly memorable.
CULTURE IN THE QUIET DETAILS
One of Tambuli’s most sophisticated achievements is its integration of Filipino culture without resorting to tourist-focused performances or manufactured experiences. “We showcase Filipino heritage through

our food, local entertainment, and collaborations with artisans,” Esteves notes. “Whether it’s a boodle fight by the beach or cultural dance nights, guests can immerse in authentic Filipino moments.”
This authenticity extends to the resort’s upcoming “Go Slow, Go Local” Independence Day celebration, which kicks off the Slow Food Movement in Cebu. The event brings together renowned chefs from Cebu and Bacolod to showcase locally sourced ingredients, creating a culinary experience that educates while it entertains. At PHP 1,800 net for the lunch buffet or PHP 2,500 net for day use including resort facilities, it represents the kind of meaningful cultural programming that distinguishes Tambuli from resorts that treat Filipino culture as mere decoration.
HEALTH IN HARMONY WITH PLACE
While the Lanas spa is currently under renovation, Tambuli’s approach to wellness extends far beyond traditional spa services. The resort has embraced the growing demand for active wellness programming with complimentary activities that encourage guests to move, breathe, and connect.
Friday and Saturday evenings feature yoga sessions from 5 to 6 PM, taking advantage of the golden hour lighting and sea breeze. Aqua Zumba sessions run Friday through Sunday from 4:30 to 5:30 PM, combining fitness with fun in the resort’s spacious pools. For families, Weekend Funventure sessions on Saturday and Sunday afternoons create opportunities for children to play games and make new friends while parents relax nearby. These programs reflect a broader understanding of modern wellness travel as guests increasingly seek resorts that support their health goals without requiring additional fees or complicated bookings. The natural integration of these activities into the daily rhythm of the resort creates an environment where wellness happens organically rather than feeling forced or commercialized.
ROOTED IN RESPONSIBILITY, ELEVATED IN EXPERIENCE
Tambuli’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond marketing rhetoric to practical implementation

that guests can observe and participate in. The resort practices comprehensive waste segregation, actively minimizes single-use plastics, and supports locally sourced produce through partnerships with community suppliers.
Perhaps most notably, the resort maintains an organic garden that directly supplies its restaurants, creating a farm-to-table experience that reduces environmental impact while enhancing food quality.
“We are committed to responsible tourism,” Esteves emphasizes, noting that these practices align with growing guest expectations for environmentally conscious travel options.
This sustainability focus particularly resonates with corporate clients seeking venues that align with their environmental, social, and governance commitments. For international visitors, especially environmentally conscious balikbayans, these practices demonstrate that Philippine resorts can compete globally on sustainability metrics while maintaining local authenticity.
REVEALED IN SILENCE, REMEMBERED IN STILLNESS
Beyond the obvious attractions of beach and pools, Tambuli offers discoveries that reveal themselves gradually to observant guests. The nature trails wind through the lush tropical landscaping, providing early morning walking opportunities that showcase the resort’s commitment to preserving natural beauty within its developed spaces.
“Many guests are pleasantly surprised to discover our nature trails and serene pool areas—lush, quiet corners of the resort that are perfect for early morning walks or a refreshing swim,” Esteves shares. These unexpected elements contribute to the sense that Tambuli rewards exploration and extended stays rather than rushing guests through predetermined experiences.
The Tipsy Dog Beach Club adds another layer to the resort experience, operating Sunday through Thursday from 11 AM to midnight and Friday through Saturday until 2 AM. This venue creates options for guests seeking livelier evening entertainment while maintaining the overall serene atmosphere that defines the broader resort experience.
SHAPING THE FUTURE WITH HEART AND HERITAGE
As Philippine tourism evolves toward more sustainable and authentic experiences, Tambuli represents a thoughtful approach to resort development that other destinations might well emulate. “We hope to be remembered as a resort that honored its roots, elevated the Filipino hospitality experience, and inspired others to lead with heart,

heritage, and responsibility,” Esteves reflects.
This vision extends beyond immediate guest satisfaction to longer-term impact on Philippine tourism. By demonstrating that luxury and authenticity can coexist, that sustainability and profitability align, and that Filipino hospitality can compete globally without compromising its essential character, Tambuli contributes to a more mature and sustainable tourism industry.
The resort’s success in serving both local and international markets while maintaining cultural authenticity offers a model for other Philippine destinations seeking to develop tourism that benefits local communities while satisfying increasingly sophisticated traveler expectations.
WHERE EVERY ARRIVAL FEELS FAMILIAR
For overseas Filipinos planning their next visit home, Tambuli offers something increasingly rare in today’s travel landscape: a destination that understands the emotional complexity of homecoming while providing the practical comforts that make extended stays feasible and enjoyable.
“Come home to a place that remembers you,” Esteves concludes. “Tambuli is not just a resort— it’s a welcome back hug, a taste of comfort, and a celebration of who you are.”
In an industry often criticized for prioritizing profit over people, Tambuli’s commitment to creating genuine connections—between guests and place, between tradition and modernity, between individual comfort and community values—represents a refreshing evolution in Philippine hospitality.
Whether seeking a peaceful family reunion venue, a productive corporate retreat location, or simply a place to reconnect with the rhythms of island life, Tambuli Seaside Resort and Spa offers something increasingly precious: the luxury of time, space, and authentic connection in a world that often provides none of these.
IF YOU’VE BEEN LOOKING FOR A SIGN—THIS MIGHT BE IT
For those planning their next return, whether after a long absence or just a long week, Tambuli Seaside Resort and Spa offers more than an escape. It offers a welcome back.
With space to gather, room to breathe, and a deep understanding of what it means to come home, Tambuli invites you to stop searching. You’ve been expected.

Coming Home to Healing: How Nurture Wellness Village is Redefining Filipino Well-being for the World
by Billy De La Cruz
In a world where speed is prized over stillness and digital noise often drowns out inner calm, where the pace of life rarely pauses, a quiet sanctuary thrives in the mist-covered hills of Tagaytay. More than a spa resort, Nurture Wellness Village is a soulful return to what it means to be whole. Here, beneath the shade of native trees and beside fields of coffee and greens, healing is not a service—it is a way of being.
Rooted in Filipino cultural wisdom and guided by the principle of pakikipagkapwa—their deeply held belief in shared humanity— Nurture Wellness Village is redefining wellness for the global age. This is not a borrowed tradition repackaged for tourists. It is an authentic, heartfelt movement that brings together ancient healing, scientific integrity, and a sense of home.
This is not just a destination. It’s a homecoming.
“It’s about pakikipagkapwa,” says Catherine Brillantes-Turvill, founder and president of Nurture Wellness Village, and current president of the Wellness Tourism Association of the Philippines. “That deep Filipino sense of shared humanity—connection to others, to the land, to something greater than ourselves. That’s what true wellness means.”
Under her leadership, Nurture Wellness Village has grown beyond its beginnings as a serene retreat in 2001. It has become a cultural movement, championing the Philippines as a global leader in holistic healing rooted in community, tradition, and nature.
ROOTED IN SOUL: HEALING THE FILIPINO WAY
Well before wellness tourism became trendy— Nurture Wellness Village was envisioned as a sanctuary that honored, rather than imitated, Filipino traditions. Brillantes-Turvill, who once held a highpowered corporate role, was driven by a mission: to create an authentic space that would bring Filipino healing wisdom to the modern world.
CNN Go named it one of Asia’s “28 Most Relaxing Spas.” Asia Spa Magazine placed it among the “Top Seven Spas in the Philippines.” Yet for BrillantesTurvill, the true success lies in a deeper recognition— that Filipino healing is a complete system, one that sees body, mind, and spirit as inseparable.
“Western medicine often compartmentalizes,” she explains. “But our traditions understand that healing happens in relationship—with ourselves, with nature, and with one another.”
At Nurture Wellness Village, this is called ecotherapy, where healing takes place in harmony with nature, rooted in the Filipino values of empathy and community.

SPACES THAT BREATHE: ARCHITECTURE WITH INTENTION
At Nurture Wellness Village, every structure tells a story—one that honors Filipino heritage and embraces nature as an essential partner in healing. The iconic Ifugao huts, far from being mere aesthetic choices, embody centuries-old indigenous wisdom. These traditional houses, originally designed for practicality and resilience in mountainous regions, have been thoughtfully adapted to provide guests with modern comforts while maintaining their authentic essence. Each hut is a testament to sustainable building practices, crafted from locally sourced bamboo, wood, and other natural materials that harmonize with the surrounding environment.
The architecture itself is a silent healer. Open-air layouts invite cool mountain breezes and soft sunlight to circulate freely, encouraging a deep sense of calm and presence. Earthy tones, from muted browns to the subtle greens of native plants, blend seamlessly with artisanal Filipino crafts—woven textiles, hand-carved wood accents, and indigenous pottery—that adorn
Catherine Brillantes-Turvill, visionary behind Nurture Wellness Village and advocate for Filipino wellness traditions worldwide.

interiors. This thoughtful design creates a sanctuary where one’s body and mind are gently coaxed into relaxation even before the first treatment begins.
Walking through the grounds, visitors feel the subtle yet powerful effect of this intentional space. The rhythmic rustle of leaves, the distant calls of native birds, and the fresh scent of lemongrass and sampaguita mingle to awaken the senses. It’s a place that breathes with life—inviting guests to slow down, listen, and reconnect to the natural rhythms of both earth and self. Here, the boundary between indoors and outdoors dissolves, reminding everyone that healing extends beyond the body into the environment that nurtures it.
THE WISDOM IN THEIR HANDS
The therapists at Nurture Wellness Village are custodians of an ancient Filipino legacy of healing touch. More than trained professionals, they are carriers of cultural memory and intention, blending technical expertise with heartfelt care passed down through generations. In Filipino tradition, a mother’s touch is sacred—imbued not only with skill but with a deep nurturing spirit that conveys empathy and respect for the person receiving care. Many of Nurture’s therapists are mothers themselves, bringing this unique quality into every massage and ritual.
Signature treatments such as Hilot Kagalingan and Haplos Kalinga are not simply physical manipulations; they are sacred ceremonies. Drawing from indigenous practices, these therapies harmonize therapeutic pressure with prayerful presence, balancing energy
and promoting holistic restoration. The hands move with purpose—soothing muscles, releasing tension, and encouraging the flow of banlaw (life force) throughout the body. Guests often remark on a sense of being held—not just physically but emotionally and spiritually—an experience that transcends typical spa encounters.
This profound connection between therapist and guest exemplifies pakikipagkapwa, the Filipino value of shared humanity. Each session becomes an intimate dialogue of healing, where touch serves as language. In a fast-paced world that often feels isolating, the therapists’ hands provide a grounding reminder that we are seen, valued, and cared for. It’s a

healing philosophy that resonates deeply, offering not only relief but renewal at the most elemental level.
SCIENCE AND SOUL, TOGETHER
While deeply rooted in tradition, Nurture Wellness Village embraces innovation through a harmonious blend of science and soul. At the heart of this synthesis is the Amu’in line of therapeutic oils, developed by cofounder Dr. Mike Turvill, a PhD chemist whose passion for Filipino botanicals led to the creation of these uniquely potent blends. Each oil combines indigenous plants long valued for their healing properties with rigorous scientific formulation, ensuring efficacy , safety, and a sensory experience that awakens both body and spirit.
These oils serve as more than just fragrances or massage aids—they are integral to the healing process. Crafted to address a range of needs from soothing restless minds to easing muscular pain

or supporting digestive health, each blend reflects a purposeful marriage of ancestral knowledge and modern chemistry. This thoughtful approach respects Filipino cultural heritage while offering guests confidence in quality and results.
Beyond the oils, Nurture’s holistic philosophy extends to integrating evidence-based wellness practices into its programs. Rather than opposing science and tradition, the resort demonstrates how they can co-exist and enhance each other. The result is a unique offering that honors legacy while providing cutting-edge support for guests seeking deep, lasting transformation. At Nurture, healing is not nostalgia; it’s a living, evolving dialogue between past and present. BEYOND THE MASSAGE: PROGRAMS
THAT TRANSFORM
What truly distinguishes Nurture Wellness Village is its commitment to lasting well-being that transcends the temporary relief of a single treatment. Their comprehensive programs encompass detoxification, weight management, stress reduction, and lifestyle renewal—each carefully crafted to address the complex, interconnected nature of health. These journeys are guided by a multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, and wellness experts, ensuring that care is medically sound, emotionally supportive, and culturally meaningful.
Traditional Filipino healing methods, such as charcoal therapy and herbal cleansing, are integrated with nutritional guidance, therapeutic massage, and mindfulness practices to create personalized paths toward balance. This holistic approach acknowledges that health is more than absence of illness—it is a state of harmony that requires time, patience, and community support. Nurture’s programs reject quick fixes and fad diets, focusing instead on sustainable habits and emotional resilience.
For overseas Filipinos, in particular, these programs offer a profound reconnection—not just to their heritage, but to their bodies and selves after years of living in often disconnected, stressful environments. Nurture becomes more than a destination; it becomes a vital pause, a reset button, and a source of empowerment for those seeking to reclaim their well-being and identity. Healing here is a process, a homecoming,
and ultimately, a transformation.
HEALING THE WORKPLACE: THE WORKWELL PROJECT
Burnout isn’t just personal—it’s organizational. That’s why Nurture launched the WorkWell Project, a corporate wellness program that reimagines team building through experiential healing.
Here, team members don’t just attend seminars— they move, breathe, laugh, and reconnect. Sessions may include partner massage, juice therapy, tai chi gong, and the delightfully freeing “happy dance.”
“When people are well, organizations thrive,” Brillantes-Turvill affirms.
Companies can also host offsite retreats at Nurture, where nature and purpose combine to spark creativity and camaraderie.
WELLNESS FOR ALL SEASONS
Whether you’re a balikbayan longing for reconnection, a city-weary professional seeking rest, or a leader hoping to inspire your team, Nurture Wellness Village offers deeply personal and purposedriven experiences designed to meet you where you are in life. From day visits to immersive multi-day retreats, from solo travelers to families and corporate groups—everyone finds a place of belonging here. Because wellness isn’t a luxury. It’s a universal need.
Further expanding their vision of whole-person care, Nurture Wellness Village will soon partner with Clinica Manila, a leading medical group specializing in integrative medicine. Under the leadership of Dr. Hernan Delizo, an expert in internal medicine,

endocrinology, and geriatrics, this collaboration will allow Nurture Wellness Village to provide holistic, continuing, and connected care that bridges wellness and clinical expertise. The result: a true medicalwellness hub, supporting guests in achieving longterm, sustainable well-being.
Also on the horizon are physical fitness and mindfulness retreats led by seasoned holistic health practitioners. These programs will offer intentional, expert-guided experiences designed to strengthen the body, steady the mind, and renew the spirit—aligning with their belief that true healing is not only possible, but deeply personal.
Even the on-site restaurant, Farmer’s Table, embodies this guiding philosophy. Known for its nourishing Filipino comfort food made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, it transforms every meal into an act of care. Open daily from 7 AM to 7 PM, it welcomes all who hunger for more than just a meal— those seeking warmth, memory, and meaning in every bite.
This commitment to inclusive, culturally rooted care recently earned Nurture Wellness Village national recognition. On May 26, it was officially awarded by the FIQH and Halal Council of the Philippines Inc. as the only Halal Certified Wellness Destination in the country.
As the global demand for halal-certified services continues to grow, this milestone marks Nurture Wellness Village as a pioneer in wellness hospitality— responding not only to evolving market needs but to a deeper mission of fostering cross-cultural respect, accessibility, and healing for all.
LEADING WITH CULTURE: A GLOBAL VISION FOR FILIPINO WELLNESS
As president of the Wellness Tourism Association of the Philippines, Brillantes-Turvill envisions the country as a world leader in culturally-rooted healing. Not by copying global trends—but by leading with authenticity.
“Filipino wellness is rare,” she says. “It integrates science, spirit, and community. That is our gift to the world.”
And the world is beginning to notice. Travelers— especially after the pandemic—are seeking meaning in their journeys. They want healing that feels real.
At Nurture Wellness Village, they find it.

THE CALL TO RETURN
We are living in uncertain times. And in times like these, people seek places that restore them. Not with extravagance—but with truth.

For overseas Filipinos, it’s a return to roots. For local visitors, it’s a breath of calm. For anyone, it’s a quiet invitation to come home—to yourself, to your culture, to the kind of wellness that doesn’t fade when the vacation ends.
“Wellness,” says Brillantes-Turvill, “is not a trend. It’s a way of life—one we’ve always known in our hearts.”

The Pinoy State of Mind: How Summer Becomes a Season of Memory, Escape & Belonging
by Billy De La Cruz
Summer in the Philippines is not a line on the calendar. It is a feeling that arrives without warning, ushered in by the brightness of the morning sun or the sudden quiet of an afternoon nap. It lives in the scent of ripe mangoes, the sound of tricycles humming through sleepy towns, the taste of something cold and sweet savored beneath a cloudless sky.
More than heat or holidays, it is a shift in spirit — a collective softening of pace, a return to something essential. In a country defined by water, memory, and belonging, summer becomes less about weather and more about the way time opens, stretches, and lets us breathe.

WHERE SUMMERS BEGIN AND NEVER END
Ask any Filipino what summer feels like and you will not get a weather report. You will get a story. There was the summer when cousins came home from overseas and everyone slept on floor mattresses under one roof.
There was the summer of first crushes on the basketball court, of dusty slippers on long walks home, of rain suddenly interrupting a sunny day in a way that felt magical instead of inconvenient. These stories often begin in childhood but rarely stay there. They travel forward, imprinted on adulthood. They live in the scent of sunblock, the sound of water lapping against a banca, the feel of ice cracking in a glass of gulaman. The beauty of a Filipino summer is that it is not a place in time. It is a cycle of return.
THE LANGUAGE OF LIGHT AND ESCAPE

There is a particular quality to summer light in the Philippines. It is golden without being harsh, lingering without overstaying. It wraps itself around memories and magnifies them. And it does something else too. It encourages escape. Escape not only from city traffic and deadlines but from the burdens of formality and constraint.

Psychologically, lightness loosens us. Studies suggest sunlight improves emotional regulation and fosters openness. In a society already anchored in community and warmth, this becomes amplified. Filipinos smile more in summer, linger longer at tables, share stories in a way that feels both ceremonial and effortless. There is an intimacy that summer invites, where even silence feels like connection.
WATER AS ORIGIN AND RETURN

The Filipino relationship with water is not recreational. It is ancestral. From rivers that fed the earliest settlements to shorelines that raised entire generations, water has always been a home. Summer intensifies this pull. Whether it is a family trip to Panglao or an impromptu dip in the barangay stream, bodies seek water as a natural act of remembering.
There is no proper Filipino summer without water. Not because of heat alone, but because it mirrors the soul. Moving, changing, generous. At the beach, time feels suspended. Schedules give way to tides. Children dig their names into the sand while grandparents sit under trees with thermoses of iced salabat. The water holds it all. The joy. The nostalgia. The simplicity.
THE SACREDNESS OF SLOWNESS
Summer reintroduces slowness into Filipino life, and with it, presence. While the rest of the year is marked by motion and productivity, summer gives permission to pause. The rhythm of the day shifts. Breakfasts are longer. Afternoons are quieter. Conversations stretch lazily into twilight. This slowness is not idleness. It is restoration. It allows for observation. Of dragonflies in rice fields. Of shadows shifting on ancestral walls. Of the way time moves differently when we are truly paying attention. In provinces, this slowness is not a choice but a tradition. It is in the act of shelling peanuts for merienda. In folding laundry on bamboo chairs. In storytelling that begins after dinner and ends only when the last mosquito has

been swatted away.
THE RITUAL OF GOING HOME
Every summer, there is a ritual migration. Families pack themselves into buses, vans, ferries. Routes become ceremonies. Coolers filled with baon. Bags heavy with pasalubong. The journey is rarely about luxury. It is about presence. It is about going back to places where roots are deeper than roads.

The return to the province is one of the most enduring rituals of the Filipino summer. It is the opposite of tourism. It is not about escape but about restoration. Children meet cousins. Grandchildren meet stories. Homes open that have waited all year to be lived in again. It is in these homes, under galvanized roofs and beside coconut trees, that summer becomes most real. Not as spectacle but as soul.
FIESTAS AND THE PULSE OF COMMUNITY
Summer in the Philippines has its own sound. Brass bands. Church bells. Firecrackers. Karaoke. Roosters crowing under buntings. These are not background noise. They are heartbeat. Especially during fiesta season, when whole barangays dress themselves in color and celebration.
A fiesta is not a party. It is an affirmation. Of faith, yes, but also of survival, family, identity. Streets become kitchens. Strangers become neighbors. Food multiplies without logic. Dancing happens without instruction. Whether in honor of a patron saint or simply tradition passed down, these celebrations give summer its spirit. They remind Filipinos that joy, like grief, is better when shared.
CITY HEAT AND THE ART OF ADAPTATION
In Metro Manila and other urban centers, summer does not arrive quietly. It blares through glass buildings and congested intersections. Yet even here, the season finds a way. People adapt with creativity. Malls become playgrounds. Weekend markets bloom in parking lots. Cold drinks become rituals. Parks fill with students, vendors, lovers under umbrellas.
City summers require a different kind of surrender. Not to silence, but to softness. The small joys become louder. Street food stalls that stay open longer. Bookstores where the air conditioning feels sacred. Old songs on jeepney radios that suddenly feel like summer anthems. Even in the sprawl of buildings and wires, the season leaves its mark.

NEW FORMS OF THE FAMILIAR

The Filipino summer is evolving. It is shaped now by algorithms and airline seat sales. Beach trips are booked through apps. Memories are filtered in real time. There is a generation that knows Boracay more through drone shots than family lore. But beneath this layer of digital polish, the essence remains.
Families still gather. Friends still travel in groups that feel like extensions of the self. Young people still crave water and wind and moments that make them feel limitless. Whether through island-hopping or road trips to places that smell of ancestral kitchens, summer is still the best excuse to live more vividly.
A SEASON THAT LIVES WITHIN

The power of the Filipino summer lies not in where it takes you but in what it brings back. It is memory. It is instinct. It is inheritance. The moment you step into the sun and feel your shoulders drop, your breath slow, your heart open, you are returning. Not just to childhood, not just to nature, but to the most honest parts of yourself. That is why summer here is more than a cultural event. It is a mirror. A reminder of what it means to live with joy as a daily practice, not just a seasonal indulgence. To eat fruit with your hands. To nap with the windows open. To laugh until you are breathless. To feel, deeply and without apology.
SUMMER IS ALWAYS CALLING
Wherever you are in the country, whether your summer is framed by mountains or malls, by silence or street noise, there is always an invitation waiting. An invitation to step outside, slow down, and remember that you belong to a place that understands beauty not as luxury but as rhythm.
The Filipino summer does not ask you to chase anything. It asks you to notice. And in that noticing, it offers something rare and beautiful. A chance to live, not harder, but truer.

Get Curves in the Right Places Through Weight Management and Body Sculpting at The Zen Institute
Struggling to have the perfect curves in the right places due to difficulty in losing or gaining weight? Or perhaps your skin already needs some tightening to fully achieve your aesthetic body goals? While there are various treatments that offer exciting possibilities to attain a more defined, well-shaped body, it is crucial to initially understand that the journey to an ideal body contour must begin with weight management, followed by body sculpting
The Zen Institute has been offering weight management programs and non-surgical body sculpting since 2006. Its team of professional doctors is well-trained with standardized protocols.
Some people consider body sculpting as a weight loss treatment, but this is a misconception. Weight management and body sculpting are like two peas in a pod – they complement each other. Dr. Mary Jane “MJ” Torres, founder and CEO of The Zen Institute, explains that weight management is the first step in the body sculpting process. Management can mean either weight loss, weight gain, or weight maintenance. Any of the three can be the base of the program, depending on the body requirements of the patient.
When a patient comes for body sculpting, the first thing we do is measure the weight, BMI (body mass index), fat percentage, and muscle mass. If one is overweight, then we recommend weight loss,” Dr. MJ says. “If a patient has a specific part of the body that needs to be reduced, like the face, and is doing the weight loss program, he/she must be aware that during weight loss, fat loss is equally distributed from head to foot. So, if the person has a pear body shape, after losing 10 lbs. of weight, the patient’s body remains pear-shaped but smaller. Hence, body sculpting is necessary in this situation.
Body sculpting is non-surgical, which is why undergoing a weight loss program is essential. It is not a quick fix but rather a lifestyle shift, Dr. MJ further explains. Body sculpting targets specific areas that need fat reduction. The weight loss program is composed of nutritional counseling, a diet plan, a workout plan with target heart rates, support like herbal diet pills, IV therapy for weight loss, and detox programs like Colon Hydrotherapy and Ozone Therapy.

The program is available for individuals aged 18 years old and above. Those who wish to avail must go through the following process:
Consultation with the doctor for body analysis
Blood test to determine baseline results
Nutritional counseling – which includes a meal plan with meal replacements and herbal diet pills (composed of Ginkgo, chili, bitter melon, all-natural fiber formula of Chitosan derived from the shells of marine crustaceans, and composite Vitamin B)
Workout Plan

Treatment Plan – Mesotherapy, Lipocryo therapy, Ultralipo, IV therapy, Colonics Hydrotherapy, Ozone Therapy.
The Zen Institute offers the following types of non-surgical body sculpting:
Mesolipotherapy – an injectable cocktail using phosphatidylcholine, a soy derivative. This cocktail, when injected into the fat, dissolves the fat.
Ultracontour – uses high-intensity focused ultrasound. This technology dissolves the fat just like Mesolipotherapy. Lipocryo therapy – uses high-energy cold temperatures to squeeze out the water content of the fat.
Ultralift – uses radiofrequency to tighten the skin after fat dissolution.
A weekly treatment and consultation are recommended. To achieve the desired result, the program may last from six weeks to three months but may extend to six months. In cases where patients are pre-diabetic or diabetic, Ozempic and Saxenda may be given in collaboration with an endocrinologist.
“Non-surgical weight management and body sculpting may not be instant, but they are lasting as they assist the patient in making a lifestyle shift,” declares Dr. MJ, who opened her first clinic in 2000. Initially, she focused on skinrelated issues, but after five years, the anti-aging and wellness expert expanded into body sculpting

‘Go & Get Better!’ A RALLYING CALL AT THE PHILIPPINES’ PIONEERING WELLNESS EXPO
The Philippines has it all. Whether you’re seeking a serene escape to stunning beaches, a peaceful getaway to natural landscapes, a rejuvenating retreat at wellness farms, a pampering stay at luxurious hotel resorts, a soothing relief at top-tier medical facilities, or a sweet smile on welcoming faces, the Philippines truly has it all.
No wonder foreign visitors continue to flock to the Philippines, drawn to both her unveiled and hidden beauty, her familiar charms, rich history, and quiet magnanimity. They come to uncover her gems, to discover her soul, and to surrender to the truth: this is a land like no other — a tropical paradise, vibrant and timeless. Just like them, Filipinos beyond her shores never fail to pay a visit, nostalgic for the past they left behind and ever hopeful for what lies ahead. The same holds true for Filipinos at home and migrants who choose to make the country their permanent home, eager as ever to explore her urban sprawls and rural expanses in search of something new, something different, yet undeniably spectacular.
All told, the Philippines is indeed an “Earthly Eden”, awaiting all who seek beauty, warmth, and wonder.
This assertion about the Philippines is the cornerstone of the country’s pioneering health and wellness trade fair, the Health & Wellness Conference & Expo (HWONFEX), a proud Filipino initiative being supported by the Department of Tourism and the Department of Health and in partnership with the Wellness Tourism Association of the Philippines (WeTAP). The event serves as the centerpiece of a dynamic multimedia campaign aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles among Filipinos, celebrating the country’s natural beauty, and supporting the government’s efforts of positioning the Philippines as a world-class and premier health and wellness tourism destination.
The health and wellness industry in the Philippines shows to be very promising, as highlighted by a 2023 report from the Global Wellness Institute. The

country’s wellness economy was valued at $43.33 billion, ranking 23rd globally, surpassing even Thailand. Contributing 9.92% to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the sector demonstrates substantial economic influence. In comparison, the broader tourism industry accounts for 14.48% of GDP, underscoring the wellness sector’s growing potential as a key driver of national development and sustainable economic growth.
With this year’s theme: “Go & Get Better: Sustainable

and Regenerative Tourism Recharges All!”, HWONFEX strongly promotes the call to embrace travel as a journey toward holistic wellness, benefiting from the beauty, calmness, comfort, and pleasure offered by the destinations we explore; the people we meet along the way; and the food, culture, and practices we experience during our travels — emphasizing the importance of leaving the places we visit better than we found them. The goal is to balance economic growth, social equity, and environmental protection for the well-being of both present and future generations.
Building on the success of its 2024 rerun, HWONFEX will stage its 2025 edition from September 5 to 7, 2025 at the SMX Convention Center Manila. The event is considered to be the pioneering health and wellness expo in the country, bringing together health and wellness providers and related industry stakeholders from award-winning wellness resorts offering health tourism packages to organic farms and specialty shops providing various innovative, sustainable, and eco-friendly health and wellness products and services. HWONFEX 2025 will be even more exciting, featuring both new and enhanced elements aimed at enriching the experience for exhibitors, visitors, buyers, and guests.

With over 7,000 islands to explore, the Philippines invites you to hop from one paradise to another—each with its own rhythm, beauty, and story to tell.
SIDE TRIP
7 Island-Hopping Routes for Every Kind of Traveler
by Liana Marie Sagun
Island-hopping is more than a popular summer activity in the Philippines. It is a way of experiencing the country in its most elemental form. With over seven thousand islands, the options are endless, but there are a few standout routes that speak to every type of traveler. Whether you are seeking solitude, adventure, family bonding, or romance, there is an island circuit that feels tailor-made for your spirit.
In the Visayas, the Gigantes Islands offer a perfect balance for thrill-seekers and food lovers. Hidden lagoons, limestone formations, and a bounty of seafood fresh from the day’s catch make this cluster in Iloilo a feast for the senses. Further north, the Hundred Islands National Park in Pangasinan provides a family-friendly option where calm waters and islets shaped by time create a natural playground for kids and adults alike. Adventurers looking for uncharted territory can head to Balabac in southern Palawan. This remote group of islands features sandbars that appear like secrets revealed at low tide. Getting there requires time and patience, but the reward is a feeling of having arrived somewhere untouched.
For those chasing romance, the Calamian Islands present a dreamscape. Coron’s lagoons shimmer with clarity and the sunken wrecks offer underwater stories waiting to be explored. Camiguin, with its volcanoes and springs, invites a more introspective journey, perfect for
couples looking to share quiet wonder.
Island-hopping is not a one-size-fits-all experience. It is fluid and personal. Sometimes it is about discovering beauty in the obvious, and other times it is about wandering just far enough to feel like you have found something no one else has.

Set sail through the sparkling waters of Gigantes Island, where limestone cliffs, hidden lagoons, and untouched beaches make every stop an unforgettable escape.

Through the Pintô: Where Art and Nature Heal the Soul
by Catherine C. Oriel
I’ve always had a soft spot for museums that blur the lines between indoors and outdoors—places where nature and art exist side by side, where you can wander from a gallery into a garden without missing a beat. There’s something grounding about being able to take in a powerful painting, then step outside to breathe fresh air and reflect.
I never thought I’d find a museum like that in the Philippines—until I visited the Pintô Art Museum. Tucked away in the quiet hills of Antipolo, the Pintô Art Museum is about an hour away from Metro Manila, but it feels like a world apart. The moment I stepped onto the grounds, I was immediately struck by the peaceful atmosphere. The bright white Spanish-style buildings were bathed in natural light, with archways and courtyards opening into lush gardens filled with indigenous plants. Beautiful and thought-provoking sculptures were thoughtfully scattered throughout the property, piquing my curiosity for the pieces yet to come.
Pintô’s story began in the 1970s, when Filipino neurologist and former Director of St. Luke’s Hospital, Dr. Joven Cuanang, purchased the house and lot that would later become the museum. During the political shifts of the People Power Revolution and the fall of the Marcos regime in 1986, Dr. Cuanang emerged as a key advocate and patron for local artists, helping to spark a new wave of creative expression. He played a pivotal role in supporting The Salingpusa, a revolutionary Filipino artist collective, by providing them with a space to create and display their work.

In 2001, Dr. Cuanang opened Pintô’s first art gallery, and by 2010, it had grown into the Pintô Art Museum we know today. His collection features works by renowned artists like Elmer Borlongan, Mark Justiniani, Rodel Tapaya, and others—each piece capturing the shifting and vibrant landscape of contemporary Philippine art.
Our first stop was a large, airy gallery where Karnabal

by The Salingpusa stretched across the main wall, clearly the centerpiece of the room. My group and I spent nearly 30 minutes just unpacking the layers of symbolism and meaning in that one painting, which “provides a metaphor of Philippine society as a carnival of competing powers and pawns,” according to Pintô’s website. It was hard to believe it was completed back in 1992, as more than 30 years later, its political messages still feel strikingly relevant to today’s global landscape. As a Filipina American, my recent trip to the Philippines was the first time I fully confronted the complex history and painful realities the Filipino people have endured— particularly during the Marcos regime. As I continued walking from gallery to gallery, I realized that the Pintô

Art Museum offered more than just art; it revealed the emotional and political depth of Filipino expression— capturing stories of struggle, resistance, and identity through bold imagery and layered symbolism. In a world where it’s all too easy to move on without looking back, the work at Pintô challenges you to slow down, reflect, and reckon with the past—while also honoring the resilience and progress that has followed.
“Pintô” means “door” in Tagalog—a fitting symbol for the museum’s role as an entry point into the rich and complex world of Philippine art and heritage. A visit to the Pintô Art Museum offers a powerful opportunity to engage with aspects of Philippine history and identity that are often overlooked or unfamiliar. Being in that environment—surrounded by greenery, wandering freely from one gallery to the next—felt healing and eye-opening. We ended the visit at Café

Rizal, sipping on cold San Miguel beers on a hot March afternoon, looking out at the hills. It was quiet, and for a moment, I felt completely transformed and inspired. Before you even step foot into the museum, a sign outside reads: “Enter and be healed by art and nature. Depart and leave a better person.” I couldn’t have said it better myself to encapsulate the experience I had there. The Pintô Art Museum didn’t just meet my love for museums that flow between the natural and artistic world—it gave that love context. Meaning. It reminded me that the Philippines, in all its complexity, holds endless opportunities for reflection, connection, and discovery.
Some portals don’t just open to places. They open to parts of yourself you didn’t know were waiting to be uncovered. All you have to do is be brave enough to walk through the door and experience it for yourself.
