Every family dreams of a place that feels like home. A place where mornings are calm, children can play safely outdoors, and every corner holds room for laughter and memories. For many families moving beyond the rush of Metro Manila, that dream is becoming reality in Silang, Cavite at The West Midland.

Developed by Don Tim Development Corporation, a trusted name in community building for more than five

decades, The West Midland carries forward its promise of “Life Made Good.” Here, modern comforts meet the cool, green backdrop of Silang, offering space to breathe, room to grow, and a community built with families in mind.

THE SILANG ADVANTAGE

Silang offers the balance families want: the calm of the countryside with the accessibility of the city. Set in Barangays Santol and Lalaan II, The West Midland is only minutes from Aguinaldo Highway and CALAX, connecting residents to Metro Manila, Tagaytay, and nearby business districts.

The town’s atmosphere is part of its appeal. Families enjoy proximity to schools, hospitals, and shopping centers without losing the peace of a cooler, greener setting. With CALAX and the upcoming Cavite-Batangas Expressway

reshaping travel, Silang is also becoming one of Cavite’s most promising growth areas.

COOL CLIMATE, COMFORTABLE LIVING

Silang’s elevation brings breezier, cooler weather that families long for after years of city living. At The West Midland,

homes maximize this natural gift with wide windows and open layouts that let air flow freely. Shaded parks and treelined streets add to the sense of retreat, making life here not only healthier and more comfortable but also more practical with reduced reliance on air conditioning.

HOMES THAT GROW WITH YOU

The homes at The West Midland reflect the Filipino lifestyle through a Modern Asian Tropical design. Clean lines, open layouts, and angled roofs provide both beauty and practicality, while durable finishes ensure long-term quality.

Two models are available. The Tulip Unit offers 58 square meters of space on a 150-square-meter lot, ideal for newlyweds or small families planning for growth. The Daffodil Unit, slightly larger at 62 square meters, suits bigger households with flexible areas and extra parking. Both provide the freedom to expand, garden, or simply enjoy generous outdoor space.

SPACE TO BREATHE

Unlike most urban developments, The West Midland gives families wide outdoor areas. Each lot allows for front

yards, backyards, and side gardens that can be customized into play spaces, patios, or quiet corners for morning coffee. These are not token green patches but true extensions of the home.

WHERE COMMUNITY THRIVES

Life here goes beyond individual homes. The clubhouse, swimming pool, playground, and multipurpose court are designed to bring neighbors together. Safety is ensured with a gated entrance and 24/7 personnel, while home layouts allow privacy without losing a sense of openness.

EVERYDAY CONVENIENCE

Daily needs are always close at hand. Schools, hospitals, shopping centers, and leisure spots are within easy reach, while Tagaytay’s attractions are only a short drive away. Within the development itself, six commercial lots provide added convenience and support a vibrant, self-sustaining community.

INVESTMENT THAT MAKES SENSE

Choosing The West Midland is both a lifestyle decision and a sound investment. With infrastructure projects boosting accessibility, property values in Silang are steadily rising. Families gain a home in a location that enhances daily life while securing long-term growth.

BUILT ON TRUST

For over fifty years, Don Tim Development Corporation has built neighborhoods across Southern Luzon with quality and care. The West Midland continues that legacy, offering homes that feel timeless, communities that foster connection, and a setting where life feels lighter and more complete.

Every so often, we are reminded of the power of a story well told. A story that goes beyond borders, that speaks to shared humanity, and that inspires others to dream bigger. This is the kind of storytelling we are committed to bringing you in these pages.

For this issue, we shine a light on the many ways Filipinos are shaping the present and future of our world. It is a tribute to leaders, creators, innovators, and everyday heroes who show that talent nurtured in the Philippines can make a mark anywhere.

This is not just a record of achievements. It is a collection of journeys filled with persistence, ingenuity, courage, and vision. You will discover the stories of individuals whose names are celebrated across continents, as well as those whose influence is felt quietly yet deeply in their local communities. Together, they reveal the extraordinary range of Filipino excellence.

This issue showcases how the Filipino spirit transforms every space it touches. At the heart of all these stories is an unshakable sense of identity. No matter where they are in the world, Filipinos carry with them the values of community, resilience, and generosity. These values give us not only the strength to succeed, but also the ability to contribute meaningfully to the places and industries we enter.

It is our hope that this issue leaves you feeling proud and inspired. Proud of the paths forged by those who came before us, and inspired to create your own path with confidence. Excellence can take root in a bustling metropolis or a quiet hometown, in global capitals or homegrown ventures,

through bold reinvention or steadfast dedication.

As you turn these pages, may you see reflections of yourself in these narratives. May you remember that the Philippines is more than a location on a map. It is a living force for creativity, leadership, and innovation. The rise of the Filipino is a story still unfolding, and each of us has a role to play in it.

IN THE NEWS

A Timeless Muse: Mary Mariño Spanish Era Pictorial in Historic Taal in Batangas

Grace, heritage, and elegance came together when Mary Mariño, daughter of Pete and Tess Agregado Mariño, stepped into the storied town of Taal for a formal pictorial at Recuerdos, a destination famed for recreating the romantic grandeur of the Spanish colonial era.

In full period ensemble, Mary posed within the charming ancestral homes and cobblestone paths of Taal — a living postcard of history. The setting, rich in character and nostalgia, became the perfect canvas for a portrait session that would transcend time.

This moment was more than just a celebration of beauty. It was a tribute to family, roots, and legacy. Mary is the proud sister of Marvey Mariño, former Congressman and the current Mayor of Batangas City, a public servant known for his dedication to progress and community development. Their family has long stood as a symbol of leadership, grace, and integrity in Batangas.

Professionally, Mary has carved a name for herself abroad as Head Nurse at Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Los Angeles — a role that speaks to her strength, compassion, and leadership in healthcare. Despite her life in the U.S., Mary remains deeply connected to her Filipino heritage.

“It’s a souvenir of a lifetime,” shared her mother, Tess Agregado Mariño reflecting on the photoshoot. “These are memories we carry forever — a bridge between the past and the future.”

Tess herself is a woman of distinction. A former model of renowned Japanese imperial painter Gungi Ando, Tess’s image is immortalized in life-sized oil paintings exhibited in a Japanese museum — a rare feat she shares with only one other Filipina: Lalaine Bennett, the legendary Miss Universe runner-up.

As Mary now steps into her own spotlight, this pictorial becomes a symbolic echo of the elegance that runs in their bloodline. From Taal’s

timeless charm to Los Angeles’ medical corridors, Mary Mariño embodies the strength of a modern Filipina — proud of her heritage, grounded in values, and radiant with quiet dignity.

The Many Reasons to

Travel light, but bring your curiosity. You’re about to set off on a journey across the Philippines, a sprawling archipelago bursting with hidden wonders that will change your idea of paradise forever. Each destination offers a new story, a new rhythm, and a new way to experience the magic of this vibrant land.

Forget the usual tropical clichés. The Philippines is not just beaches and sunsets. It is a place that reshapes you from within and challenges your idea of what a getaway can truly be.

LIVING MUSEUM: WHERE EVOLUTION GOT CREATIVE

Start your journey in Palawan, often called the last frontier, where evolution seemingly set up a private laboratory and forgot to invite the rest of the world to see the results. The Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park, accessible only by liveaboard dive boats, hosts the most biodiverse marine sanctuary in the region. Here, 600 fish species and 360 coral species create an underwater metropolis where whale sharks cruise like gentle giants and manta rays perform underwater ballet.

But Tubbataha is just the opening act. The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River winds 8.2 kilometers through limestone karst landscapes, harboring eight bat species and serving as a nursery for endangered marine life. The silence underground, broken only

by the splash of paddles and occasional flutter of wings, provides an otherworldly meditation on nature’s architectural prowess.

Head north to Bohol, where the Chocolate Hills create one of Earth’s most surreal landscapes. These 1,268 perfectly conical hills, covered in grass that turns chocolate brown during dry season, stretch to the horizon like a vast geological chess set. But Bohol’s real treasure is the Philippine tarsier, weighing less than a tennis ball, with eyes larger than its brain and the ability to turn its head 180 degrees. The Tarsier Conservation Area in Corella protects these nocturnal primates, whose enormous amber eyes seem to hold ancient secrets.

Travel to Mindanao’s forests where the Philippine eagle rules as the world’s largest and most powerful bird of prey. With fewer than 800 individuals remaining, encountering one feels like receiving a blessing from the forest spirits. The Philippine Eagle Center in Davao provides sanctuary for these magnificent birds, whose feather crown and fierce golden eyes make them look like mythical creatures that accidentally wandered into reality.

In the waters surrounding Dumaguete, Apo Island Marine Reserve demonstrates how communitybased conservation can resurrect dead reefs. Local fishing communities transformed degraded coral areas into thriving sanctuaries where sea turtles nest on black sand beaches and schools of jackfish create silvery tornadoes in the blue water.

The Cordillera mountains harbor the Ifugao rice terraces, carved 2,000 years ago and still functioning through ancient irrigation systems called “muyong.” These living landscapes support endemic bird species and traditional farming practices that UNESCO recognizes as both cultural and natural heritage. During planting season, the terraces mirror the sky so perfectly that walking among them feels like traversing clouds.

Move to the Visayas, where Negros Island hosts the largest population of Visayan warty pigs, found nowhere else on Earth. These forest dwellers, distinguished by their prominent facial warts and bristly manes, represent successful conservation efforts in the West Visayas State University’s breeding program.

In Siargao’s mangrove forests, the Philippine crocodile, the world’s most critically endangered crocodilian, finds refuge in freshwater marshes.

Once numbering in the tens of thousands, fewer than 100 adults remain in the wild, making every conservation success a triumph against extinction.

The Sulu Sea conceals the Jessie Beazley Reef, where dugongs graze in seagrass meadows like underwater cattle. These gentle marine mammals, relatives of elephants, can live over 70 years and serve as living indicators of ocean health.

NATURAL MASTERPIECES: THE COUNTRY THAT PERFECTED PARADISE

From Palawan, sail north to El Nido, where limestone karst formations rise from emerald waters like the fossilized dreams of ancient gods. The Big Lagoon and Small Lagoon, accessible only by kayak through narrow limestone openings, reveal hidden beaches where the only footprints belong to monitor lizards and hermit crabs. The water here achieves such transparency that boats appear to float on air rather than liquid.

Continue to Coron, where Japanese shipwrecks from World War II rest in crystal-clear waters, creating artificial reefs that teem with marine life. The Irako Maru, sitting upright at 43 meters depth, serves as home to schools of barracuda and sweetlips, transforming wartime tragedy into underwater sanctuary.

Fly to Luzon’s north, where the Banaue Rice Terraces cascade down mountainsides like green waterfalls frozen in time. Built entirely by hand using indigenous tools, these terraces represent humanity’s greatest collaboration with mountain geography. During golden hour, mist rises from the paddies while the last light of day turns water into mirrors reflecting the sky.

Head to Albay Province, where Mount Mayon displays volcanic perfection with its symmetrical cone rising 2,462 meters above coconut groves and rice fields. Local photographers gather at dawn in Legazpi City to capture the mountain’s silhouette against the sunrise, often finding it partially veiled in clouds that seem arranged by an artistic deity.

Travel to Batangas, where Taal Volcano creates a lake within a lake within an island—a geological Russian doll that defies easy description. The

smallest active volcano in the world sits on Volcano Island in the middle of Taal Lake, which itself sits on the larger island of Luzon. The view from Tagaytay Ridge reveals this natural paradox in all its impossible beauty.

Journey to Zambales, where the aftermath of Mount Pinatubo’s 1991 eruption created an alien landscape that’s slowly transforming into unexpected beauty. The crater lake, formed in the volcano’s collapsed summit, reflects sky in waters so blue they seem artificially enhanced. The trek to reach it crosses moonscapes of volcanic ash and lahar formations, making the lake’s pristine beauty even more startling.

In Bohol, the Loboc River winds through jungle landscapes where monitor lizards sun themselves on fallen logs and kingfishers flash electric blue as they dive for fish. River cruises pass through tunnels of bamboo and nipa palms while local musicians aboard floating restaurants provide soundtracks of traditional folk songs.

Visit Camiguin, the island born of fire, where seven volcanoes created black sand beaches and natural hot springs. The Sunken Cemetery, submerged during a volcanic eruption in 1871, now exists as an underwater memorial marked by a large cross rising from the sea. Snorkeling here reveals coralencrusted tombstones and schools of tropical fish swimming through what was once a sacred ground. Explore Siquijor, the mystical island where traditional healers still practice ancient arts passed down through generations. White sand beaches ring an island interior of century-old balete trees and hidden waterfalls like Cambugahay Falls, where multi-tiered cascades create natural infinity pools perfect for swimming.

Travel to Catanduanes, the “Happy Island,” where Puraran Beach hosts some of the Philippines’ best surfing waves. The Majestic Rolling Hills, covered in emerald grass, roll toward the Pacific Ocean like a tropical version of Ireland’s countryside.

End in the Batanes Islands, the Philippines’ northernmost frontier, where Ivatan stone houses withstand Pacific typhoons and rolling hills dotted with cattle create landscapes that seem transplanted from Scottish highlands. Sabtang Island’s traditional villages preserve architecture and customs virtually unchanged for centuries, while Marlboro Country’s grasslands stretch toward dramatic cliff-lined coasts.

FESTIVAL REPUBLIC: THE ARCHIPELAGO THAT NEVER STOPS CELEBRATING

Your cultural immersion begins in Cebu during Sinulog Festival, where two million people transform the entire city into a river of color and movement. The festival honors the Santo Niño with street dancing that continues for days, accompanied by drums that create a collective heartbeat audible from kilometers away. Hotels book solid a year in advance, and the phrase “Pit Señor!” becomes the city’s universal greeting, shouted with joy from every corner.

Travel to Kalibo for Ati-Atihan, the “Mother of All Philippine Festivals,” where social hierarchies dissolve as participants paint their faces with soot

and dance with wild abandon. The festival traces to a 13th-century peace agreement between indigenous Ati people and Malay settlers, but today represents pure, uninhibited celebration. Street vendors sell face paint and feathered headdresses while entire families join impromptu dance parties that spill from sidewalks into main thoroughfares.

Head to Bacolod for MassKara Festival, born during the 1980s sugar crisis when city leaders decided to counter economic gloom with an explosion of smiling masks and street parties. The painted grins have become symbols of Filipino resilience, proof that joy can serve as resistance against despair. The festival’s competitive street dancing draws performers from throughout the Philippines, each group spending months perfecting elaborate costumes and choreography.

But Filipino celebration extends far beyond designated festivals. Every barangay (neighborhood) has its patron saint, and every patron saint deserves proper honor. This means that somewhere in the Philippines, every single day of the year, a community is hosting a fiesta complete with lechon roasting over coconut husks, karaoke competitions lasting until dawn, and basketball tournaments that draw spectators from neighboring provinces.

In Mountain Province, witness the Begnas Festival during rice harvest season, where Igorot communities perform traditional dances while dressed in hand-woven textiles that take months to complete. The cañao ritual includes the sacrifice of pigs and chickens, followed by communal feasting that strengthens tribal bonds and ensures spiritual protection for the coming year.

Visit Davao during Kadayawan Festival, where tribal communities from throughout Mindanao gather to showcase their distinct cultures through street dancing, traditional crafts, and exotic fruits displays. The festival’s highlight is the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan street dancing competition, where performers wear elaborate costumes adorned with indigenous materials like abaca fiber, shells, and feathers.

Experience Iloilo’s Dinagyang Festival, where Ati warrior dances tell the story of early inhabitants

before Spanish colonization. Performers blacken their skin with soot and wear minimal clothing decorated with geometric patterns while executing energetic dances that mimic hunting and warfare.

Traditional arts remain vibrantly alive throughout the archipelago. In Mindanao, the kulintang ensemble creates hypnotic music using a row of small bronze gongs, with rhythms that vary by ethnic group. T’boli women weave t’nalak textiles with patterns received in dreams from the goddess Fu Dalu, creating fabrics so sacred they’re used only for special ceremonies.

The Spanish colonial legacy lives in stone churches scattered throughout the islands. San Agustin Church in Manila, dating to 1587, survived earthquakes and wars while preserving centuriesold religious art. Miag-ao Church in Iloilo showcases baroque architecture adapted for tropical climate, with thick walls and elevated design that provide natural cooling.

Filipino hospitality operates as a cultural imperative rather than tourist service. The phrase “kumain ka na ba?” (have you eaten?) serves as both greeting and invitation, ensuring no visitor remains hungry or lonely. Families regularly set extra places for travelers they’ve known for minutes, and the concept of “stranger” dissolves faster than ice in tropical heat.

Music runs through Filipino culture like blood through veins. From the haunting gongs of Mindanao to the heart-wrenching kundiman love songs that bring entire rooms to tears, the Philippines creates soundtracks for every feeling. Karaoke goes beyond entertainment because it is a social ritual that turns strangers into lifelong friends with a single performance of “My Way.”

CULINARY CARTOGRAPHY: MAPPING THE PHILIPPINES THROUGH FOOD

Begin your culinary journey in Manila, where adobo achieves its most refined expressions. At neighborhood carinderias (local eateries), each family guards secret variations passed down through generations. Some add coconut milk for richness, others prefer the dry Ilocano style with minimal sauce, while certain cooks swear by pineapple juice for subtle sweetness. The dish’s genius lies not in complexity but in perfect balance: vinegar for preservation and tang, soy sauce for umami depth, garlic for aromatics, and bay leaves for herbal notes that tie everything together.

Travel to Pampanga, the culinary capital, where sisig was born in the 1970s when Lucia Cunanan transformed pig face and liver into sizzling perfection. Served on cast-iron platters with calamansi and chili, sisig represents Filipino ingenuity in transforming humble ingredients into unforgettable flavors. The dish’s popularity has spread nationwide, with variations using tuna, tofu, or bangus (milkfish) for different dietary preferences.

Head south to Bicol, where coconut milk and chili peppers create a cuisine that’s simultaneously creamy and fiery. Bicol Express, despite its name referencing the region’s train line, weaponizes sili

(chili) in coconut cream with pork or shrimp. The heat builds slowly, warming your entire body while the coconut provides cooling balance. Local cooks measure spice levels not by taste but by the amount of sweat produced.

Journey to Cebu, where lechon achieves legendary status through the CNT Lechon family’s closely guarded recipe. Their whole roasted pig, stuffed with lemongrass, tanglad, and secret spice blends,

develops skin so crispy it shatters at first bite while the meat remains impossibly succulent. Celebrity chefs from around the world make pilgrimages to Cebu specifically to experience this lechon, often declaring it the best roasted pork they’ve ever tasted.

Explore Iloilo, where La Paz batchoy originated in the 1930s at Ted’s Oldtimer restaurant. This noodle soup combines fresh egg noodles with pork organs, crushed chicharron, and beef stock, creating a hearty bowl that locals swear can cure any ailment from heartbreak to hangovers. The dish’s richness comes from slow-cooked bones, while crispy toppings provide textural contrast.

Head to Dumaguete and taste silvanas, the iconic cashew meringue sandwiches filled with buttercream and rolled in crunchy cashew crumbs, born at Sans Rival Cakes and Pastries. These frozen delights slowly dissolve on your tongue, releasing a cascade of nutty sweetness that tells the story of Negros Island’s rich sugar legacy.

Travel to Davao, where durian season transforms the entire city into an aromatic adventure. The “king of fruits” challenges visitors with its pungent smell but rewards the brave with custard-like flesh that tastes like vanilla-almond heaven. Local hotels provide durian parties where guests can sample different varieties while learning proper eating techniques from Davao natives who consider durian rejection a personal insult.

Discover Baguio, where strawberry farms grow berries so sweet and bright they taste like pure sunshine. Hear the familiar call of “Taho!” drifting through the mountain air as vendors serve warm silken tofu topped with rich brown sugar syrup and fresh strawberries. This simple snack captures the

city’s cool mountain breeze and its abundant harvest in every spoonful.

In Palawan, kinilaw reaches its purest expression using super-fresh catch from pristine waters. Raw fish gets “cooked” in coconut vinegar and calamansi juice, mixed with onions, ginger, and chili to create a dish that’s simultaneously light and intensely flavorful. The best kinilaw happens on beaches where fishermen prepare their catch within hours of landing.

Explore Mindanao, where Maranao cuisine showcases Muslim Filipino cooking traditions. Rendang, slow-cooked beef in coconut milk and spices, demonstrates the region’s connection to broader Southeast Asian flavors while maintaining distinctly Filipino characteristics. The cooking process can take hours, reducing coconut milk to concentrated richness that coats tender meat.

Visit Bataan, where the original adobo sa gata adds coconut milk to the classic vinegar-soy base, creating a dish that’s simultaneously familiar and exotic. This variation demonstrates how Filipino cooks adapt foundational recipes to local ingredients and preferences, ensuring tradition remains alive while allowing for innovation.

Experience the vibrant street food culture that turns sidewalks into bustling open-air kitchens. Isaw, grilled chicken or pork intestines marinated in soy and calamansi, offers a smoky crust with a tender bite inside. Balut, a boiled duck embryo eaten straight from the shell, may test the squeamish but provides a protein-rich boost when dipped in salt, chili, and vinegar. Fish balls, kwek-kwek which are quail eggs in bright orange batter, and banana-que, deep-fried bananas coated in caramelized sugar, serve as affordable and flavorful snacks found on nearly every street corner.

End with Filipino desserts that defy international conventions. Halo-halo piles shaved ice with sweetened beans, jellies, ube ice cream, leche flan, and evaporated milk into organized chaos that tastes like heaven. Each spoonful delivers different textures and temperatures, creating an eating experience that’s as much about play as flavor. Ube, the purple yam, has become the unofficial color of Filipino desserts, its earthy vanilla-like flavor and striking violet hue transforming ice cream, cakes, and pastries into Instagram-worthy creations that taste even better than they photograph.

THE EQUATION OF ENCHANTMENT

The numbers only scratch the surface: a vast web of life, centuries of culture woven together, and a cuisine that transforms every bite into a story. The Philippines offers more than an escape. It promises a journey that changes how you see the world and what it means to belong.

This is not a visit. It is an invitation to become part of something greater where every stranger welcomes you like family, every sunset feels crafted for your soul, and the urge to explore one more island grows impossible to resist.

Bring only your sense of wonder and openness. The Philippines waits quietly, ready to reveal a world where magic is real and every moment leaves a mark.

Starfish Island lives up to its name with resident starfish that guests can observe in their natural habitat, creating moments of connection with marine life that feel both intimate and profound. Lu-li Island, whose name playfully combines “lulubog” (submerge) and “lilitaw” (emerge), offers a unique sandbar experience where the island literally appears and disappears with the tides.

The hotel’s partnerships with reputable tour operators ensure that these Honda Bay experiences maintain the highest standards of safety and environmental responsibility. Boats are well-maintained and operated by experienced local guides who understand both the waters and the delicate ecosystems they navigate.

Within the city, Baker’s Hill tempts with local delicacies and panoramic views, Mitra’s Ranch provides hilltop serenity, and the Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center showcases the island’s biodiversity. The hotel’s arrangements ensure every excursion is seamless, safe, and memorable.

Guiding The Ivywall Hotel: Vision, Leadership, and Lasting Legacy

Building on the strong foundations laid by Engr. Danilo D. Tamayo, The Ivywall Hotel continues to thrive under the hands-on leadership of Diana Christy Tamayo-Iñigo and George Michael Iñigo. Having already made their mark earlier in the hotel’s story, the duo now shares how they’ve turned vision into daily practice: blending operational excellence, brand stewardship, and deep-rooted family values to shape a hospitality experience that feels both distinctly Filipino and globally competitive.

When George first took on his role, he faced the challenge of shifting the team’s mindset.

“At first it was hard, since the employees were not used to working directly with the owners and they were intimidated,” he recalls. But by focusing on three core values—Humility, Care, and Excellence—they helped employees feel supported rather than scrutinized.

“We want our team to know we’re here to help and empower them, not to point fingers,” he explains. This approach has fostered a culture where dedication and pride in service thrive.

Diana brings her perspective as both a family member and a marketing professional. She emphasizes the importance of evolving with new trends while maintaining brand standards.

For both, The Ivywall is more than a hotel—it’s a part of their identity. Diana reflects, “This is where we grew professionally, where we were tested, and where we realized there are endless opportunities to learn.” Outside work, they find respite at Napsan Beach, a serene getaway where they enjoy simple pleasures like swimming, sharing boodle fight lunches, and gathering under the stars—a perfect reminder of the warmth and community they aim to create at The Ivywall Hotel.

“As an owner’s representative, I help management raise necessary concerns to the owning company,” she says. “It’s crucial that we refine strategies based on market trends while balancing transparency with the owner’s vision.” Her leadership ensures The Ivywall Hotel remains relevant and competitive without losing its Filipino soul.

At the heart of their philosophy is the Filipino value of malasakit—a genuine care extended not only to guests but also to staff and partners.

Looking ahead, Diana shares their ambitious vision: “Our goal is to be the benchmark of worldclass Filipino hospitality in Palawan.” For George, this vision is deeply tied to cultural pride. “It’s our identity as Filipinos to be naturally hospitable—treating each guest like family and showcasing our vibrant culture,” he says.

Their partnership balances individual strengths perfectly. While George focuses on flawless operations, Diana drives the brand and marketing strategies. They maintain open communication, offering constructive feedback and embracing change as an opportunity to grow.

Beyond Borders: The Enduring Excellence of Overseas Filipino Workers

In 2024, over 10 million overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) achieved something unprecedented: they sent home a record-breaking $38.34 billion in remittances, according to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. This staggering figure, representing a 3% increase from the previous year’s $37.21 billion, tells only part of a far more profound story.

Behind each money remitted lies countless hours of skilled labor, personal sacrifice, and unshakable determination that has positioned Filipino workers as indispensable assets in the global economy. These modernday heroes have transcended geographical boundaries to become pillars of excellence worldwide, carrying with them not merely their labor, but the very essence of Filipino values that have earned international recognition and respect.

The OFW phenomenon represents far more than economic necessity. It embodies the Filipino spirit of resilience, adaptability, and unshakeable dedication to family and nation. Across continents and cultures, these kababayans have established themselves as synonymous with quality, integrity, and exceptional service, transforming the narrative from economic migration to cultural ambassadorship on a global scale.

THE GENESIS OF A GLOBAL MOVEMENT

The roots of overseas Filipino labor migration stretch back to the early 1900s, when Filipino workers first ventured to Hawaiian sugar plantations and Alaskan canneries. However, the systematic deployment of Filipino workers began in earnest during the 1970s under President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., who recognized the potential of overseas employment as both an economic strategy and a solution to domestic unemployment.

What began as a temporary labor export program has evolved into a sophisticated global workforce deployment system. The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), established in 1982, has facilitated the movement of millions of skilled and semi-skilled Filipino workers to over 200 countries and territories worldwide. This evolution reflects not just changing global labor demands, but the Philippines’ strategic positioning as a premier source of quality human resources.

The socio-economic impact of OFWs on the Philippines cannot be overstated. Remittances consistently account for approximately 8-10% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product, funding everything from basic household necessities to major infrastructure projects. More significantly, OFW families demonstrate higher rates of home ownership, educational attainment, and entrepreneurial activity, creating a multiplier effect that strengthens entire communities.

EXCELLENCE ACROSS INDUSTRIES

Filipino workers have distinguished themselves across virtually every sector of the global economy, earning reputations for professionalism, skill, and reliability that

transcend national boundaries.

In healthcare, Filipino nurses, doctors, and medical technicians form the backbone of medical systems from the Middle East to North America. Countries like the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, and the United States actively recruit Filipino healthcare professionals, recognizing their combination of technical competence, compassionate care, and cultural sensitivity. Maria Santos, a cardiac surgery nurse in London, exemplifies this excellence: promoted to department head within five years, she now leads training programs for international medical staff.

The maritime industry tells perhaps the most compelling story of Filipino dominance. Filipino seafarers comprise nearly 25% of the world’s maritime workforce, operating vessels that carry 90% of global trade. Their expertise spans from deck officers to marine engineers, with Filipino captains commanding some of the world’s largest container ships and cruise vessels. Captain Roberto Cruz, who helms a major international shipping line, attributes Filipino maritime success to rigorous training standards and an inherent understanding of teamwork forged by the archipelagic nature of the Philippines.

Engineering and construction sectors worldwide rely heavily on Filipino expertise. From the towering skyscrapers of Dubai to the infrastructure projects of Australia, Filipino engineers, architects, and skilled craftsmen contribute precision and innovation. Civil engineer Ana Reyes designed critical components of Singapore’s water management system, demonstrating how Filipino technical expertise addresses global challenges.

The hospitality and service industries have been transformed by Filipino workers who bring warmth, attention to detail, and multilingual capabilities to hotels, restaurants, and cruise ships worldwide. Their service-oriented culture, rooted in the Filipino concept of “kapamilya” (treating others as family), creates exceptional customer experiences that drive business success.

Even in emerging sectors like information technology and digital services, Filipino professionals have carved significant niches. The Philippines has become a major destination for business process outsourcing precisely because Filipino workers combine technical proficiency with strong English communication skills and cultural adaptability.

NAVIGATING CHALLENGES WITH GRACE

The OFW journey, however, is not without significant challenges that test the very resilience for which Filipinos are known. Family separation remains the most profound sacrifice, with parents missing their children’s milestones and spouses maintaining relationships across time zones

and continents. The emotional toll of these separations affects not just the workers themselves, but entire family structures back home.

Cultural adjustment presents another complex challenge. OFWs must navigate different languages, customs, religious practices, and workplace cultures while maintaining their own identity.

Labor rights issues persist in many destination countries, with some OFWs facing contract violations, wage theft, physical abuse, and restricted movement. Domestic workers, in particular, remain vulnerable to exploitation despite international protective measures and bilateral agreements.

Yet Filipino workers consistently demonstrate remarkable resilience in overcoming these adversities. Discrimination based on nationality, race, or economic status affects many OFWs, yet they respond not with bitterness but with excellence that gradually changes perceptions.

CULTURAL AMBASSADORS AND GLOBAL CITIZENS

The contributions of OFWs extend far beyond their professional roles and financial remittances. They serve as cultural ambassadors who introduce Filipino values, traditions, and perspectives to global communities, fostering international understanding and appreciation for Philippine culture.

In cities worldwide, Filipino communities have enriched local cultures through food, festivals, and arts. Filipino restaurants introduce authentic cuisines that reflect the archipelago’s diverse culinary heritage. Cultural festivals like “Barrio Fiestas” and “Sinulog” celebrations attract not just Filipino expatriates but local populations eager to experience Filipino hospitality and traditions.

Volunteerism represents another significant contribution of OFW communities. Filipino healthcare workers often volunteer their expertise during natural disasters and health emergencies. After Hurricane Katrina, Filipino nurses from across the United States converged on New Orleans to provide medical assistance. Similarly, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Filipino healthcare workers in numerous countries worked overtime, with many making the ultimate sacrifice in service to their adopted communities.

Entrepreneurship among OFWs creates economic opportunities that benefit both host countries and the Philippines. Filipino-owned businesses, from small retail establishments to major service companies, generate employment and contribute to local tax bases while often facilitating trade relationships with the Philippines.

The diplomatic soft power wielded by OFWs cannot be underestimated. Their positive contributions to host societies create goodwill that strengthens bilateral relationships between the Philippines and destination countries. This people-to-people diplomacy often proves more effective than formal diplomatic channels in building lasting international partnerships.

PREPARING TOMORROW’S GLOBAL WORKFORCE

Recognizing the crucial role of OFWs in national development, the Philippine government has implemented comprehensive programs to enhance their skills, protect their welfare, and maximize their contributions to national progress.

The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) has aligned training programs with

international standards and global labor market demands. Specialized training centers prepare workers for specific industries and destination countries, ensuring they arrive abroad with relevant, certified skills that command competitive wages.

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) provides comprehensive welfare programs including insurance coverage, educational scholarships for OFW children, and reintegration programs for returning workers. These initiatives recognize that supporting OFW families strengthens the entire overseas employment program.

Technology has revolutionized how OFWs maintain connections with home and access support services. Digital remittance platforms have reduced transfer costs and increased speed, while video communication allows realtime family interactions that help maintain relationships across distances. Online learning platforms enable OFWs to upgrade their skills while working abroad, ensuring career advancement and adaptability to changing job markets.

Social media has become a powerful tool for amplifying Filipino excellence globally. OFW success stories shared online inspire others while showcasing Filipino capabilities to international audiences. Professional networking platforms help Filipino workers connect with opportunities and mentors worldwide, creating global professional communities that transcend geographical boundaries.

The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) has developed programs to harness the expertise and networks of successful Filipino professionals abroad for national development. These initiatives create opportunities for skills transfer, investment, and knowledge sharing that benefit the Philippines while maintaining connections with overseas communities.

A LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE

The story of overseas Filipino workers represents one of the most remarkable chapters in Philippine history, demonstrating how a nation can transform economic necessity into global excellence. Through decades of dedication, sacrifice, and achievement, OFWs have established the Philippines as a premier source of skilled, reliable, and values-driven workers who contribute positively wherever they serve.

Their legacy extends beyond individual success stories to encompass a fundamental transformation in how the world perceives Filipino capabilities. No longer seen merely as cheap labor, Filipino workers are increasingly recognized as skilled professionals who bring unique value propositions to global organizations and communities.

The support and recognition that OFWs deserve must come not only from international employers and host governments but also from the Philippines itself. This includes continued investment in education and skills development, stronger protection of worker rights, and more robust programs for family welfare and worker reintegration.

The words of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal resonate powerfully in the context of today’s OFWs: “The youth is the hope of our fatherland.” Today’s overseas Filipino workers, regardless of age, embody this hope by carrying Filipino excellence to every corner of the world, building bridges between cultures, and demonstrating that the Filipino spirit of resilience, compassion, and excellence knows no borders. Their continued success represents not just individual achievement, but the enduring strength and promise of the Filipino nation itself.

The Purple Invasion: How Ube is Turning Heads (and Palates)

Walk into any trendy bakery from Brooklyn to Berlin, and you’ll likely spot it: that unmistakable royal purple hue peeking out from croissants, swirled into soft serve, or glazed atop artisanal donuts. Ube, pronounced “OO-beh,” has quietly orchestrated one of the most remarkable culinary conquests of the past decade. What began as a humble root vegetable in Filipino kitchens has transformed into a global phenomenon that’s reshaping dessert menus, captivating food influencers, and introducing millions to the rich tapestry of Filipino cuisine.

For the uninitiated, ube is a purple yam native to the Philippines, scientifically known as Dioscorea alata. Its flesh ranges from pale lavender to deep violet, and its flavor profile is equally complex: subtly sweet with notes of vanilla and coconut, earthy yet delicate, nutty yet creamy. Unlike the artificial grape flavoring many Westerners might expect from its vibrant color, ube offers a sophisticated taste that’s both exotic and comforting.

But ube is more than just another Instagram-worthy ingredient. Its meteoric rise represents something far more significant: the growing global appetite for Filipino culture, creativity, and culinary innovation. In every purple-swirled creation lies a story of heritage, diaspora, and the power of food to transcend borders.

ROOTS OF ROYALTY

Long before ube conquered international palates, it held a revered place in Filipino households and celebrations. The purple yam has been cultivated in the Philippines for centuries, thriving in the archipelago’s tropical climate and volcanic soil. Its deep purple color has always carried special meaning in Filipino culture, symbolizing royalty, luxury, and festivity.

Traditional Filipino desserts have showcased ube’s versatility for generations. Ube halaya, a thick, creamy pudding made from mashed purple yam, coconut milk, and sugar, remains the gold standard of ube preparations. This labor-intensive dessert requires hours of constant stirring, making it a labor of love typically reserved for special occasions like Christmas, birthdays, and family reunions. The vibrant purple treat often serves as the crowning glory of holiday tables, its

rich color and celebration.

Equally beloved is halo-halo, the Philippines’ national dessert, where ube halaya sits atop a towering mountain of shaved ice, sweetened beans, jellies, and tropical fruits. This colorful creation embodies the Filipino spirit of harmony in diversity, with ube providing the dish’s signature purple flourish. In sapinsapin, a layered glutinous rice cake, ube creates one of the colorful tiers that make this dessert as visually stunning as it is delicious.

The reverence for ube extends beyond taste to cultural identity. Purple has long been associated with Filipino nobility and spiritual significance, and ube’s natural violet hue connects modern Filipinos to their ancestral appreciation for beauty and ceremony. In a culture that values both visual presentation and deep flavor, ube represents the perfect marriage of aesthetics and taste.

THE GLOBAL BOOM

Ube’s journey from Filipino kitchens to global recognition didn’t happen overnight. The transformation began in earnest during the 2010s, propelled by several converging forces: the growing Filipino diaspora, the rise of social media food culture, and an increasingly adventurous global palate seeking authentic, diverse flavors.

Filipino American chefs played a crucial role as cultural ambassadors, introducing ube to foreign audiences through innovative fusion creations. These culinary pioneers recognized that ube’s natural beauty and unique flavor profile could serve as a gateway ingredient, drawing curious diners into the broader world of Filipino cuisine. Early adopters began incorporating ube into familiar Western desserts, creating ube cheesecakes, macarons, and ice creams that felt both exotic and accessible.

The Instagram revolution proved to be ube’s secret weapon. In an era where visual appeal can make or break a food trend, ube’s photogenic purple hue made it irresistible to social media users. Food bloggers and influencers began featuring ube creations, their feeds flooded with images of violet-hued treats that garnered thousands of likes and shares. The hashtag #ube exploded across platforms, creating a viral loop that introduced millions to this Filipino treasure.

Mainstream culinary media soon took notice. Food Network features, magazine articles, and restaurant reviews began highlighting ube as the next big flavor trend. Celebrity chefs started experimenting with the

ingredient, while food manufacturers recognized its commercial potential. What had once been available only in Filipino grocery stores or specialty shops suddenly appeared in mainstream supermarkets and chain restaurants.

The pandemic years unexpectedly accelerated ube’s global expansion. As people spent more time at home, many turned to baking and cooking, seeking novel ingredients to brighten their quarantine routines. Ube’s cheerful color and comforting flavor provided exactly the kind of joy people craved during uncertain times.

Behind ube’s global success stands a dynamic community of Filipino entrepreneurs, chefs, and food innovators who have worked tirelessly to elevate their heritage ingredient on the world stage. These cultural ambassadors have transformed ube from a niche ethnic ingredient into a mainstream culinary phenomenon.

INNOVATION BEYOND DESSERT

While ube’s sweet applications continue to dominate global markets, innovative chefs have begun exploring its potential in savory preparations, revealing new dimensions of this versatile ingredient. Filipino fusion restaurants now feature ube gnocchi, where the purple yam’s natural creaminess creates pasta with both visual impact and earthy depth. Ube has appeared in risottos, providing a subtle sweetness that complements both seafood and meat dishes.

Modern Filipino cuisine has embraced ube in unexpected ways. Chefs create ube-infused breads and pastries that blur the line between sweet and savory, while others use purple yam as a natural food coloring in pasta doughs and dumpling wrappers. These applications showcase ube’s versatility beyond its traditional dessert role.

From a sustainability perspective, ube offers compelling advantages. The purple yam is naturally resilient, requiring fewer resources than many other crops while providing excellent nutritional value. Rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, ube aligns with growing consumer interest in functional foods that offer health benefits alongside great taste.

Food scientists have taken notice of ube’s natural properties, studying its potential as a source of anthocyanins, the compounds responsible for its purple color and antioxidant properties. Research into ube’s nutritional profile has revealed significant levels of potassium, vitamin C, and fiber, positioning it as a superfood that happens to taste incredible.

WHAT THE PURPLE WAVE MEANS FOR FILIPINO IDENTITY

Ube’s global success represents far more than a culinary trend; it embodies the rising soft power of Filipino culture and the diaspora’s growing confidence in sharing their heritage with the

world. For many Filipino-Americans and overseas Filipino workers, seeing ube celebrated in mainstream media and restaurants provides a source of immense pride and validation.

The ingredient’s popularity has opened doors for broader Filipino culinary traditions. Restaurants that initially attracted customers with ube desserts often find diners returning to explore other Filipino dishes like adobo, lumpia, and sisig. Ube serves as a comfortable entry point into a cuisine that Western palates might have previously found intimidating or unfamiliar.

This cultural exchange reflects a broader shift in global food culture toward inclusivity and authenticity. Diners increasingly seek out genuine cultural experiences rather than sanitized fusion versions of ethnic cuisines. Ube’s success suggests that audiences are ready for flavors that tell real stories about real places and people.

For younger generations of Filipino-Americans, ube’s mainstream acceptance has provided a bridge between their heritage and their contemporary identity. Many describe feeling proud to see their grandmother’s favorite ingredient featured in trendy cafes and celebrated by food influencers. This visibility helps combat the shame or embarrassment some experienced growing up with “different” foods that their non-Filipino classmates didn’t understand.

A TASTE OF HOME, A SIGN OF RISING INFLUENCE

As ube continues its purple march across global menus, its significance extends far beyond fleeting food fashion. This humble Philippine root vegetable has become a symbol of cultural resilience, creativity, and the power of the Filipino diaspora to shape international taste preferences.

The ube story reflects the Philippines’ broader emergence on the global stage. As the country’s economy grows and its cultural exports gain recognition, ube serves as an edible ambassador, introducing the world to Filipino values of warmth, celebration, and culinary artistry. Every purple-hued creation carries within it the story of a people who have maintained their cultural identity while embracing innovation and adaptation.

For food lovers worldwide, ube represents the joy of discovery and the endless potential for culinary surprise. Its success proves that authenticity resonates with global audiences hungry for genuine flavors and meaningful food experiences. In a world often divided by differences, ube demonstrates how food can unite us in appreciation for beauty, creativity, and the simple pleasure of something delicious.

Like the Philippines itself, ube is vibrant, versatile, and undeniably rising. Its journey from local treasure to global sensation mirrors the aspirations of millions of Filipinos who have shared their culture with the world while never forgetting their roots. In every spoonful of ube ice cream, every bite of purple pastry, lies a taste of home and a promise of even greater things to come.

The purple invasion is complete, but its impact is just beginning. Ube has won the world’s tastebuds, and in doing so, it has opened hearts and minds to the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines. This is more than a food trend; it’s a cultural moment, purple and proud.

When Words Open Worlds: Learning Local Dialects While Traveling

Travel can often feel like stepping into a different world. But when you take the time to learn the local dialect of the place you’re visiting, that world begins to speak back to you. In the Philippines, where hundreds of languages and dialects coexist, each region carries not just its own words but its own ways of seeing and being. Many travelers discover that learning even a handful of phrases deepens their connection to the place. In Cebu, saying “Maayong buntag” instead of “Good morning” earns you more than a smile—it earns you a moment of kinship. In Bicol, “Dios mabalos” carries with it a whole history of gratitude and warmth. These words are more than communication. They are an invitation to belong. In the smaller communities of Mindoro or Siquijor, locals are often delighted when visitors attempt to speak their native tongue. It signals curiosity, respect, and openness. Language learning on the road does not mean fluency. It means listening carefully, asking questions, laughing at mistakes, and embracing vulnerability. There is also joy in discovering how language shapes identity. A word in Hiligaynon might carry a tenderness that cannot be translated. A joke in Waray might reveal a sense of humor unique to the region. These nuances add layers to your understanding and create travel

memories that linger long after the trip is over.

To begin learning a new dialect while traveling, start with the basics: greetings, numbers, and common expressions. Many local tourism offices, homestays, or hostels have phrase sheets, or can point you to helpful mobile apps or community-led classes. Engaging a local guide or joining a cultural workshop—like weaving in Kalinga or cooking in Iloilo—also provides an authentic space to hear and practice the language in context.

Another helpful method is to keep a travel journal with words and phrases you learn along the way. Pair the vocabulary with personal notes or sketches of where you heard them—whether during a tricycle ride, at a sari-sari store, or over a shared meal. This not only aids retention but also creates a more personal connection to the language as it lives in everyday life.

Most importantly, speak up—even if imperfectly. Locals appreciate the effort and are often eager to teach or gently correct you. Sometimes, the best way to learn a word is to use it and watch the world respond. In doing so, you’ll realize that language isn’t a barrier to overcome—it’s a pathway to belonging, and an invitation to truly be part of the place you’re visiting.

Co-presented

When installed in 2026, Lea Salonga’s star will serve as permanent validation for Filipino excellence in entertainment history.

countless young viewers to see themselves reflected in Disney’s heroines.

“This is the kind of stuff reserved for people with a certain level of notoriety,” Salonga reflected, her humility evident even as she acknowledged the magnitude of her achievements. Yet her “notoriety” extends far beyond entertainment. She has served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, using her platform to advocate for children’s rights across Southeast Asia. Her concerts have raised millions for charitable causes, and her mentorship of young Filipino performers has created a pipeline of talent that continues to enrich the global entertainment landscape.

The entertainment industry has responded to her Walk of Fame selection with an outpouring of admiration. Fellow Broadway legends have praised her vocal technique and dramatic intensity, while Disney executives have acknowledged her irreplaceable contribution to their animated classics. Music critics have consistently ranked her among the finest musical theatre performers of her generation, noting her ability to convey profound emotion through both English and Filipino repertoires.

Salonga’s star will join a small but significant constellation of Filipino-American honorees on the Walk of Fame. will.i.am (Allan Pineda Lindo), better known as apl.de.ap of the Black Eyed Peas, received his star in 2018, celebrating his impact on hip-hop and pop music. Bruno Mars, whose Filipino mother gifted him with both his musical inclinations and cultural heritage, was honored in 2023 for his extraordinary contributions to contemporary music. Actor and comedian Rob Schneider, whose Filipino ancestry connects him to the islands through his maternal grandmother, received recognition for his comedic contributions to film and television.

Lea embodies the essence of a performer whose star will shine not just for herself, but for every dreamer who believes talent can overcome any obstacle.

Yet Salonga’s recognition carries particular weight because of her explicit connection to Filipino culture and her role as a cultural ambassador. Unlike some celebrities whose heritage remains background detail, Salonga has consistently celebrated her Filipino identity, performing in Tagalog, supporting Filipino artists, and serving as a bridge between Eastern and Western entertainment traditions.

Her career philosophy has remained remarkably consistent throughout her decades of success: “If you’re gonna do something, please do it well.” This simple maxim has guided her from her early days in Manila’s theater scene through her West End triumph, Broadway domination, and Disney immortality. It’s visible in her meticulous preparation for roles, her commitment to vocal excellence, and her gracious mentorship of emerging artists.

The 2026 ceremony will undoubtedly be a celebration not just of individual achievement, but of cultural breakthrough. When Salonga places her hands in the concrete beside her star, she’ll be creating a permanent monument to Filipino excellence in American entertainment. For the countless Filipino-Americans who have grown up singing along to “Reflection” or dreaming of Broadway stages, her star will serve as both inspiration and validation.

In an industry where representation battles continue to be fought, Lea Salonga’s Walk of Fame star represents something profound: the recognition that excellence transcends borders, that voices from small islands can echo across oceans, and that dreams pursued with unwavering dedication can indeed become immortal. Her star will shine not just for her, but for every dreamer who has ever believed that talent, hard work, and authenticity can overcome any obstacle.

As she continues to process this surreal honor, Salonga embodies the grace and humility that have defined her career. Her star may be the first Filipino one on the Walk of Fame, but if her legacy is any indication, it certainly won’t be the last.

Less Planning, More Living: How Gen Z and Millennials Are Redefining Getaways

Gone are the days when vacations meant six-months-inadvance bookings and laminated itineraries. A growing number of young Filipinos, particularly Gen Z and millennials, are embracing spontaneous getaways— weekend escapes decided the night before, driven not by schedule but by mood. This shift is not just about rebellion against structure. It reflects a deeper cultural pivot towards experience over possession, presence over perfection. In a country where affordable transport, scenic diversity and digital connectivity converge, last-minute trips are no longer impulsive. They are intentional.

DIGITAL NOMADS AND REMOTE WORK ENABLERS

The rise of remote work has also catalyzed this trend. With laptops in backpacks and workdays that end with beach views, young professionals are leveraging their freedom to discover places like La Union, Siargao

and Dumaguete without taking formal leave. Apps like Airbnb and Agoda, along with ride-sharing and bus booking platforms, have made logistics almost frictionless.

CURIOSITY OVER COMFORT: CHASING EXPERIENCE

Spontaneous travelers are less concerned about luxury and more drawn to authenticity. They sleep in hostels, glamp in mountains and surf between emails. For them, travel isn’t an escape but an extension of everyday life. Local markets, hole-in-the-wall eateries, and cultural exchanges form the core of their itineraries.

THE SOCIAL MEDIA SPARK

Instagram stories and TikTok vlogs are fueling this movement. Seeing a friend on a sudden Siargao trip prompts others to do the same. Hashtags like #biglaanglakad or #spurgetaway capture the spirit of impromptu escapes. The result is a communal rhythm where spontaneity becomes the norm, not the exception.

MENTAL WELLNESS THROUGH MOBILITY

For a generation managing climate anxiety, economic uncertainty and digital fatigue, these quick trips offer a reprieve. They are wellness strategies in motion. Nature becomes a reset button, and movement, however brief, becomes a mental detox.

CONCLUSION: THE JOURNEY OVER THE MAP

As this new wave of travel culture takes root, it shifts the narrative from checklist tourism to intuitive exploration. Gen Z and millennials aren’t just visiting the Philippines. They’re learning to live more fully in it—one unplanned trip at a time.

Get Curves in the Right Places Through Weight Management and Body Sculpting at The Zen Institute

Struggling to have the perfect curves in the right places due to difficulty in losing or gaining weight? Or perhaps your skin already needs some tightening to fully achieve your aesthetic body goals? While there are various treatments that offer exciting possibilities to attain a more defined, well-shaped body, it is crucial to initially understand that the journey to an ideal body contour must begin with weight management, followed by body sculpting

The Zen Institute has been offering weight management programs and non-surgical body sculpting since 2006. Its team of professional doctors is well-trained with standardized protocols.

Some people consider body sculpting as a weight loss treatment, but this is a misconception. Weight management and body sculpting are like two peas in a pod – they complement each other. Dr. Mary Jane “MJ” Torres, founder and CEO of The Zen Institute, explains that weight management is the first step in the body sculpting process. Management can mean either weight loss, weight gain, or weight maintenance. Any of the three can be the base of the program, depending on the body requirements of the patient.

When a patient comes for body sculpting, the first thing we do is measure the weight, BMI (body mass index), fat percentage, and muscle mass. If one is overweight, then we recommend weight loss,” Dr. MJ says. “If a patient has a specific part of the body that needs to be reduced, like the face, and is doing the weight loss program, he/she must be aware that during weight loss, fat loss is equally distributed from head to foot. So, if the person has a pear body shape, after losing 10 lbs. of weight, the patient’s body remains pear-shaped but smaller. Hence, body sculpting is necessary in this situation.

Body sculpting is non-surgical, which is why undergoing a weight loss program is essential. It is not a quick fix but rather a lifestyle shift, Dr. MJ further explains. Body sculpting targets specific areas that need fat reduction. The weight loss program is composed of nutritional counseling, a diet plan, a workout plan with target heart rates, support like herbal diet pills, IV therapy for weight loss, and detox programs like Colon Hydrotherapy and Ozone Therapy.

The program is available for individuals aged 18 years old and above. Those who wish to avail must go through the following process:

Consultation with the doctor for body analysis

Blood test to determine baseline results

Nutritional counseling – which includes a meal plan with meal replacements and herbal diet pills (composed of Ginkgo, chili, bitter melon, all-natural fiber formula of Chitosan derived from the shells of marine crustaceans, and composite Vitamin B)

Workout Plan

Treatment Plan – Mesotherapy, Lipocryo therapy, Ultralipo, IV therapy, Colonics Hydrotherapy, Ozone Therapy.

The Zen Institute offers the following types of non-surgical body sculpting:

Mesolipotherapy – an injectable cocktail using phosphatidylcholine, a soy derivative. This cocktail, when injected into the fat, dissolves the fat.

Ultracontour – uses high-intensity focused ultrasound. This technology dissolves the fat just like Mesolipotherapy. Lipocryo therapy – uses high-energy cold temperatures to squeeze out the water content of the fat.

Ultralift – uses radiofrequency to tighten the skin after fat dissolution.

A weekly treatment and consultation are recommended. To achieve the desired result, the program may last from six weeks to three months but may extend to six months. In cases where patients are pre-diabetic or diabetic, Ozempic and Saxenda may be given in collaboration with an endocrinologist.

“Non-surgical weight management and body sculpting may not be instant, but they are lasting as they assist the patient in making a lifestyle shift,” declares Dr. MJ, who opened her first clinic in 2000. Initially, she focused on skinrelated issues, but after five years, the anti-aging and wellness expert expanded into body sculpting

Rediscover the true nature of Filipino design at Manila FAME 2025

As the second-longest-running trade show in Asia, Manila FAME has built a legacy as the must-attend international sourcing event for Filipino artistry and craftsmanship. For its 73rd edition, happening on October 16-18 at the World Trade Center Metro Manila in Pasay City, the country’s premier trade fair for all things home, fashion, and lifestyle is returning to the core and diving into the roots of Filipino design.

With the theme “Objects of Nature,” this year’s iteration is set to be a celebration of everything that makes Filipino artistry sought after all over the world. “The word ‘nature’ refers to our physical world, and it can also mean the qualities that are basic or inherent to a person or an object,” CITEM Executive Director Leah Pulido-Ocampo explains. “Within these contexts, ‘Objects of Nature’ has Manila FAME going right into the heart of what we do best. In the process, we unveil the unique selling propositions of our products that have made the Philippines a must-visit sourcing destination for design.”

RECONNECTING

WITH COMMUNITY AND THE ENVIRONMENT THROUGH DESIGN

The trade show’s theme takes into account the current international trends, all of which point to nature as a dominating key element for 2025 and 2026. From the use of recycled and upcycled materials to bolder, more playful aesthetics and nature-connected living spaces, the prevalent direction puts a strong focus on sustainability and biophilic design, with the latter a concept that nurtures the relationship between people and the environment.

The intrinsic qualities of Filipino design make it a natural fit for this prevailing movement. Thus, Manila FAME 2025 promises to showcase Philippine-made objects inspired by design’s original muse, nature.

Visitors can expect a fresh take on design that provides a counterpoint to the increasing influence and impact of technology and AI on daily life. Find meticulously handcrafted items made from natural and indigenous materials, creatively conceptualized and executed using community-based

production processes. Discover their multiple iterations, inspired by our rich cultural diversity and heritage. Fall in love with products that are as adaptable as they are unique, thanks to the Filipino pasadya culture that results in bespoke beauty.

HIGHLIGHTING NOT JUST PRODUCTS BUT ALSO PEOPLE AND PROCESSES

Since communal effort and cultural influences are innate aspects of Filipino design, Manila FAME’s signature features rightly put the spotlight on the people and the heritage that shape it.

Merging artisanship with innovation and sustainability, Design Commune once again has a selection of local manufacturers and brands working under the expert guidance of a renowned designer—this time, with one of Manila FAME’s frequent collaborators, Tony Gonzales. See how the hard work of

21 exhibitors from the lamps and lighting, furniture, home decor, and holiday and seasonal decor categories pushes the boundaries of product development through the creative use of raw materials to produce functional and stylish designs at a dedicated exhibit.

To cultivate the export capabilities of Philippine artisan communities and enterprises, the capacity-building program Artisans Village provides marketing and technical assistance to regional MSMEs in the handicraft sector. For 2025, participating MSMEs are fortunate to have Global Trends Ambassador Patti Carpenter making factory visits to help them conceptualize and develop pieces that match their branding while also sharing her vast knowledge of the design business. The design expert is working with local artisans from the following provinces to explore how they could maximize their signature materials and expand their product lineup: Bohol (natural fibers and materials), Ilocos Sur (inabel), Quirino (woodworks and fossilized flowers), and Tarlac (wood, stone, clay, and rattan).

Visitors will also get to learn from design and business experts and thought leaders at FAME Talks. Through forums that tackle timely topics, such as “Innovative, Versatile, and Sustainable Approaches to Designing Products for the Home, Fashion, and Lifestyle Sector” and “Global Design Trends for Fashion Accessories,” attendees can delve deeper into the

dynamic world of design, gain creative and actionable insights, and develop innovative strategies for navigating an evolving landscape.

ELEVATING HOW TRADE SHOWS ARE DONE

Guests can look forward, too, to exclusive features that will further enrich their Manila FAME experience. From a simple product category, Philippine Components, which made its maiden showcase last year, is now an exhibit that focuses on the fundamental building blocks of design: coverings, parts, and fittings. With Tony Gonzales also at its helm for 2025, guests can expect an immersive presentation of specially developed architectural fittings and components developed exclusively for Manila FAME by 15 companies, in the spirit of the pasadya culture.

CITEM also brings two of its innovative programs to Manila FAME to showcase a more integrative approach to exporting design. First is CREATELab, an on-site design clinic where professionals offer branding and marketing guidance to participating exhibitors. It is a joint project by CREATEPhilippines, a content and community platform for the Philippine creative industries, and the Communication Design Association of the Philippines (CDAP). Next, with “sustainability” a key concept this year, it’s only right that Sustainability Solutions Exchange (SSX), the country’s first platform promoting sustainable practices, resources, and technology to the world’s essential industries, makes its return to Manila FAME to showcase MSMEs that incorporate circularity into their business practices.

Through Manila FAME, Manila was lauded as the Milan of Asia in the ‘80s and the ‘90s, and it continues to attract buyers from all over the world looking for distinct, clever, and impeccably made items. International buyers attest to how the expo gives them a nice overview of the country’s design capabilities. According to Isabelle Miaja, the Managing Director for Singapore’s Miaja Design Group, “Manila FAME has always been a nice place where you discover new materials or new manufacturers.”

With all of the programs and features this year’s trade show has in store, buyers and visitors alike can expect to see the best of the best of Filipino artistry and craftsmanship across a wide range of products: fashion; personal care, beauty, and wellness; furniture; home decor and houseware; lamps and lighting; holiday and seasonal decor; gifts, souvenirs, and corporate giveaways; and components.

Marvel at these “Objects of Nature” and more up close at Manila FAME 2025 by registering at the trade show’s official website, fameplus.com.

Manila FAME is organized by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), the export promotions arm of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
