Message from the Commodore

Greetings BYC Members,

As I sit here in late August, getting our kids ready to go back to school (thank God), it’s hard to believe just how fast our summer has gone by. In the wake of a successful Bayview One Design Regatta, 99th Bayview Mackinac Race, and massive turnout for the WOW (congratulations ladies) the board is now turning its attention to a packed fall schedule For the remainder of August, we will be hosting the 15th annual D Cup with twelve entries representing eight countries from around the world. A special thank you to Lance Smotherman and his team of volunteers for getting ready for this event. Our fleet of Ultimate 20’s has never been in better shape.

As we move into September our schedule gets really busy once again with our annual Long Distance Race on the 16th, Mackinac Awards dinner on the 22nd, the US Optimist Dinghy Association (USODA) Great Lakes Championships on the 23rd and 24th and finally the North Channel Race on September 30th If you have struggled to get down to the club to view our summer sailing activities not to worry There is still plenty of opportunity to bring your family down and enjoy the warm weather ahead Also, don’t forget that the Thursday Off-theDock series runs through October 5th

Operationally Bayview is in a strong position heading into the final two months of our fiscal year ending September 30th. Just reviewing our financials through July, we are on pace to have another profitable year with a

little luck and a few more solid nights in the bar we have a shot at hitting our targets for 2023. Our fall menu was launched last week and I am struggling to choose an entrée that I don’t want to at least try.

Finally, the Board is planning to take a run at adding a Social Membership Category to the Bayview By-Laws with a vote from our membership targeted for the month of October We plan to start with a Town-Hall Meeting in September to roll-out what our team has put together. Hopefully, with some added feedback and a few minor tweaks from our members suggestions this will set us up for Special Meeting in October to get this one across the finish line. I should have the meeting dates after our August Board meeting and will make sure to send out an announcement with dates and times so you can mark your calendar

As always, I want to thank all of our volunteers that make Bayview work behind the curtains. Without your service this place just wouldn’t be the same. Thank you

Manager's Report

It has been a tremendous summer of racing, events, catching up with friends, and continuous improvement. Bayview members have competed all over the country, adding to the legacy of Bayview being among the most successful sailing clubs in the Midwest The 99th Bayview Mackinac Race is in the books and within hours of arriving home the calls and planning already started for the 100th Bayview Mackinac Race presented by National Fleet Services. While the race will start on July 20th, the events surrounding the race will occur throughout the year.

The unexpected remodel of the dining room and bar has received rave reviews The addition of the mahogany and the openness of the space really enhanced the spaces We’re looking forward to completing the second floor, returning the J.L. Hudson trophy back to its case, and getting half models back up around the clubhouse. Did you know the new 10-person table in the Blue Room was constructed from the beams of the old clubhouse? Detroit Architectural Salvage recovered the wood during the demo phase and produced this table, the coffee tables throughout the club, and items like the bottle openers for sale at the front desk.

September and October look to be among the busiest months at the clubhouse. We have Thursday night races on September 14th, 28th, and 5th of October; the BYC Long Distance race on September 16th, Priems Regretta September 17th, Mackinac Awards Dinner on the 22nd, the USODA Championships September 23rd & 24th; North Channel Race September 30th Registration for the BYC Mackinac race opens for pre-registered boats on October 1 (regular on October 8); Alumni Regatta is October 14th.

We have tons of special events coming up to start thinking about as well! September 2nd kicks of football season in Michigan and Chef is bringing back an old favorite of Crab Leg night. On October 6th we will show the film Melges: The Wizard of Zenda. A few others to get on your schedule are October 19th Top Chef: Bayview Edition; November 17th Dueling Pianos Night; November 22nd is Lobsterfest.

We are working hard to offer multiple opportunities for individuals and families both sailing related and socially driven throughout the year. As we continue to stabilize our staff, we have been able to consistently deliver amazing events to our members. We look forward to seeing you both on and off the water!

Enjoy the beautiful fall in Michigan.

AUGUST 2023 3

From the Food & Beverage Director’s Desk...

Summer is in full swing, and we have been enjoying a nice season here at the club. We just rolled out new menus for lunch, dinner, and brunch. If you haven’t tried them yet, come down and treat yourself to the new contemporary food stylings of Chef Christopher and his crew. They have been working on improving not just the visual aspect of the food but also the flavor combinations. This is not your regular old lunch counter foods; these dishes display a depth of flavors. Come try the pancakes at brunch or our house smoked brisket for lunch or heirloom tomato salad for dinner. Rest assured; we always have the legacy Bayview burger!

If you are wondering what else is in store, we still have some exciting regattas and races left this season. The Chef and I are looking into the future and setting the calendar for wine dinners. Plus, ideating for the fall menu. Stay tuned for those.

We look forward to seeing you at the Club soon!

How to Successfully Sponsor a New Member

The quality of candidates submitted for membership falls primarily on the Chief Sponsor who is responsible for coordinating the collection of the required membership documents. This flowchart provides further clarification of sponsor responsibilities.

Step 1: BYC Member Submits Request for Membership Application & Prospective Member's Sailing Background for Review by Membership Committee

Step 2: Membership Committee Invites Prospective Member to Complete Application for Membership

Each prospective member must submit a completed Membership Application along with a photo of themselves to membership@byc.com.

Step 3: Help Prospective Member Identify Two Sponsors & Two Board Members to Sign in Support

Each prospective member will need two additional sponsors and signatures from two current Board members. The Chief Sponsor is responsible for shepherding the prospective member through the application process, including introducing them to other BYC members who can serve in this capacity. Once those individuals have been identified the Chief Sponsor will also help ensure they each complete the necessary Sponsor Questionnaire as well as the Sponsor Contact & Board Signature form.

Step 4: Submit All Documents of Support by the Monthly Deadline

All application documents are due no less than one week prior to the monthly board meeting. Board meeting dates and deadlines can be found on the Member Central Calendar. Membership application files that are incomplete as of the monthly deadline will not proceed to the monthly meeting.
