On behalf of Bayview Yacht Club, I am honored to welcome you to the 100th running of the Bayview Mackinac Race, presented this year by National Fleet Services!
For almost a century, sailors from across the globe have converged on the waters of Lake Huron to embark on a voyage that tests their skill, endurance, and spirit of adventure. This year, we commemorate the 100th consecutive running of this storied race, honoring a legacy of maritime excellence and the timeless thrill of competition
Since its inaugural race in 1925, the Bayview Mackinac Race has become one of the most prestigious and anticipated events in the sailing world As we gather to celebrate this milestone, we pay tribute to the countless sailors, supporters, and enthusiasts who have made this race an enduring tradition
The introduction from the program for the inaugural race states:
The tendency among American Yachtsmen of today, being towards long distance racing, it seemed advisable for such a race to be available in Detroit. The Detroit-Mackinac Race was therefore sponsored by Detroit and Port Huron Yachtsmen, and it is hoped much pleasure and benefit will be derived therefrom
Well, needless to say after not only 100 races, but 100 consecutive races that yes . . . much pleasure and benefit have been derived from!
I am always amazed after each race finish, no matter how good or bad things were on the water, by the amount of fun being had and the camaraderie displayed on the island. I am also continually amazed by the number of multi-generational racers who participate, showcasing how family-friendly the sport of sailing is!
It takes a lot of people to make this race happen I want to take a moment to thank our General Manager, Matt Prost, and all of our Bayview staff, this year’s race chair, Charlie Trost, and the other Mackinac Race Authority members, the Mackinac Race Foundation, along with all of the volunteers, and the United States Coast Guard.
I would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Port Huron Yacht Club for their continued help and support in making this race happen
And last but not least, I want to thank our Sponsors:

Bayview Yacht Club Names Honorary Race Committee
For The 100th Bayview Mackinac Race
July 20, 2024
Bayview Yacht Club is pleased to announce the Honorary Race Committee for the 100th Bayview Mackinac Race in 2024. The Honorary Race Committee is comprised of sailors with a unique connection to Bayview Yacht Club' s historic annual event who have performed significant accomplishments in the sport of sailing
The Honorary Race Committee is comprised of the following individuals, all of whom are Michigan natives and have extensive experience with the Bayview Mackinac Race:
Stuart Argo, Jr. - Argo, a product of Bayview Yacht Club' s Junior Sailing Program, has gone on to be part of seven America' s Cup campaigns including winning the America’s Cup XXVIII in 1992, aboard America3 Additionally, he won the 1988 Canada’s Cup aboard Challenge 88 and competed in several other Canada’s Cup campaigns. Argo has accomplished many wins in his sailing career worldwide and continues to make the Bayview Mackinac Race a part of his summer every year having the honor of being a "Double Goat" with 65 combined Bayview and Chicago Mackinac races.
David and Peter Askew - David and Peter started sailing in the Bayview Yacht Club Junior Sailor program. They reached the top of the sailing world in 2019, when they won the World Sailing Team of the Year after winning the Caribbean 600; and by being the first American boat in over 30 years to win the Fastnet Race on their Volvo 70 Wizard, winning the race overall. That same year, they also won the Transatlantic Race and Pineapple Cup, and in 2018 won the Sydney to Hobart Race. Other offshore wins for the Askew brothers include the Transpac and Newport Bermuda Race The Askews cut their teeth in offshore sailing on the Great Lakes and have each won multiple Bayview Mackinac Races
Commodore Bruce Burton - Com. Burton served as Commodore of Bayview Yacht Club in 2010 and went on to serve as the United States Sailing Association’s (US Sailing) President and the United States Olympic Sailing Chair. Com. Burton is a back-to-back world champion in the Etchells class and has spent a lifetime serving the sport of sailing.
Bora Gulari - The 2009 Rolex Yachtsman of the Year, Bora has racked up championships in various classes, including the International Moth (two-time world champion); Melges 24, and represented the United States in the 2016 Summer Olympics. To this day, Bora is often seen sailing on Com. Phil & Sharon O'Niel' s PAC 52 Natalie J.
Peter Harken - It would be a rare occurrence to step on a sailboat and not see the Harken name on a piece of hardware Along with his brother Olaf, Peter founded Harken Inc in 1967, with their start in the scow and iceboat communities, and quickly took over the sailing world with their hardware found on Olympic boats, America' s Cup boats, and everything from an Optimist to mega yachts and ocean racers. Peter was inducted into the Sailing Hall of Fame in 2014.
Bill Martin - Martin has a lifetime invested in the Bayview Mackinac Race on a variety of boats, the latest being his Santa Cruz 70 Stripes He has served as the President of US Sailing, the US Olympic Committee and as athletic director at the University of Michigan. Martin has won multiple Bayview Mackinac Races and was inducted into the US Sailing Hall of Fame in 2017.
Dawn Riley - A pioneer for women in sailing, Riley’s accomplishments include being part of the first all-female crew in both the Whitbread Round the World Race and America' s Cup Dawn has broken more than a few glass ceilings in the sport of sailing and now serves as Executive Director of New York-based Oakcliff Sailing. This national sail training organization trains the next generation of America’s next top sailors. She is the youngest and first female to become a ‘dual famer’ at the National Sailing and America’s Cup Halls of Fame.
Year 2010: Ray and Winnie Adams and their boat Epic won the first race for the Tigers. Ray was very skeptical when I called him and questioned what this was all about, several times. Representing the Tigers? Was this some type of scam? It became a reality to him when he received the Tiger shirts, hats, and flag and when PAWS showed up on Epic in Port Huron. Then they received on field recognition before a Tigers game. Ray and Winnie are big Pro-Team Challenge supporters to this day.
Year 2014: Mike Medwid, skipper of Not So Easy Money, was drawn by Red Wings, Ken Kal. Mike purchased Red Wing jerseys for each of his crew and had the outline of Not So Easy Money embroidered on the back of the jersey with each crew member’s name. This was the best-looking crew in all the ProTeam Challenge races
Year 2015: Yacht Legend, representing the Detroit Lions, affixed a large Lions logo on the front of each side of their boat
Year 2016: Detroit Pistons, Baddest Bad Boy of them all, Rick Mahorn, drew the boat Nauti Boys, skippered by Ed Vermet Nauti Boys won the race. Several weeks after the Mackinac, Nauti Boys, sadly, was struck by lightning in a local race and was basically destroyed. Rick, not being a fan of being on the water, hasn’t lived down his Pro-Team Challenge selection
Year 2023: Detroit City FC was invited to be the 5th team in the Pro-Team Challenge. Owner Sean Mann drew the boat, Underdog None of the other Pro-Teams had been seasonal team winners and in the playoffs for years. DCFC had just been in the playoffs and showed the other teams what winning was like by Underdog winning the Pro-Team Challenge in its first year.
2024 is an exciting year in Detroit sports. The Lions concluded a highly successful NFC playoff season. The Red Wings came within 1 point of making the playoffs The Tigers are winning early in the season. The NFL draft was highly successful and showcased globally Detroit’s rebound The Detroit Grand Prix. The Selfridge Airshow highlighting the Air Force Thunderbirds. And the 100th consecutive running of the Bayview Mackinac Race. Detroit Sports Media Association and the Pro-Team Challenge are proud to be a contributor to Bayview and this great Detroit sports scene.
“Sails were unfurled as they reached the big blue, dreams of the 1st race were coming true
Twelve yachts were anxious to race and see, who the best of all would be”
Sailors gathered long ago, it was their destiny
Twelve captains and their crews, raced into history
A sailboat race along the lake would be a challenge for all
Each captain said he was up to the task and ready to answer the call
All knew the risk that lay ahead as the breeze became a blow
A storm was building over the lake, how large they did not know
Sails and masts were lost that day, as raging storms took their toll
All twelve yachts stayed the course, hoping to reach their goal
Six yachts finished that first race, and they set the pace
This sailing challenge has now become, the annual Bayview Mackinac Race
100 years have come and gone, and the stories you hear are true
Skills and talent are required, to sail the lake of blue
“There is never a pass from beginning to end, but only a ticket to ride with the wind
Trust the wind it will take you there, just look to the sky for a breath of air
Trust the wind as the fog disappears, what you are after will be perfectly clear
Look for an island with a fort on the hill, release the spinnaker and let it fill”
Have you ever had a premonition of what the future may hold
Of winning a world class sailing race, and a medal of gold
Many captains have left their mark, whether they have lost or won
The secret is to challenge the wind, as you make your run
Many have won, more have lost, but they come back every year
This race is a favorite of world class sailors, so Bayview stand up and cheer
This 100th race is dedicated, to the captain’s and their crew,
The Mackinac Race is alive and well, clearly because of you
David Tyler
While racers prepare for the 100th consecutive running of the Bayview Mackinac Race, the race committee has been hard at work behind the scenes for over a year. The committee consists of over 50 people who ensure a safe and successful event where every detail matters. One of the key team members of this endeavor is Mike Davenport, the chair of the Harbor Committee. His exceptional leadership and dedication are not just instrumental but the very backbone of the race ' s smooth running.
As chair of the Harbor Committee, Davenport' s devotion to the race ' s success extends far beyond managing the docking of boats and harbors before and after the race. He continually offers solutions to a range of issues presented throughout the year by offering strategic insights and tireless support to ensure that the Bayview Mackinac Race thrives as a premier event. This year alone, Mike helped secure the registration location in Port Huron, secured over fourteen volunteers to help on Mackinac Island, and assisted in our successful partnership with the Blue Water Fest.
As the Bayview Mackinac Race prepares to set sail on its 100th consecutive running, it can take pride knowing that its course is charted by a steady hand with Mike Davenport at the helm of the Harbor Committee. In recognition of his outstanding leadership and continuous contributions to our race, Mike Davenport is the 2024 Race Committee Person of the Year! Congratulations Mike!
Please take a moment to recognize Mike either in Port Huron or on Mackinac Island! While he is dedicated to the race, he is also an avid golfer so please depart the harbor on Wednesday by 11 a.m. so that Mike can complete his duties to make his weekly tee time back in Port Huron!
The Bayview Mackinac Race Foundation was created in 2012 to ensure that the Bayview Mackinac Race will continue uninterrupted for generations to come The race is the longest consecutive running fresh water long distance race.
This year will be the 100th consecutive year that the race has been held. The Mackinac Race is an expensive undertaking and relies heavily upon corporate sponsorship. If that sponsorship were to go away, which it has at times, in the recent past, the Foundation has stepped in with sponsorship funding to be sure that the race was held. This also allowed the continued benefit to the economy of the State of Michigan. The Bayview Mackinac Race contributes over $50 million dollars annually to the economy of the State of Michigan. This figure was determined in a study performed by noted economist David Littman of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy
The Board Members of the Foundation would like to thank all the contributors to date that have so generously donated money and assets to the Foundation. The Board has set some high goals as far as how much money they would like to have in the Foundation’s coffers so that it can continue to support the race each year The Foundation Board has an investment strategy and policy that limits spending the principal money it has, and only uses the investment earnings to support the race. Therefore, the Foundation must continue to build the principal to a level where it can sustain its sponsorship.
If you would like to contribute toward the Bayview Mackinac Race Foundation you may do so through the BYC website or mailing your donation to Bayview Mackinac Race Foundation, 100 Clairpointe, Detroit, MI 48215. Donations can be dedicated in “Memory Of” or “Honor Of” either through the website or mail. Your contributions are tax deductible The Bayview Mackinac Race Foundation is a Federal IRS recognized 501(c)(3) organization.

The Mackinac Race Foundation ' s purpose is to ensure that the annual Bayview Mackinac Race continues on forever.
The Foundation depends entirely on contributions, bequests, and endowments to accomplish its goal to guarantee the financial security of the Mackinac Race in perpetuity. Thus, it is the Foundation ' s investment strategy and policy to invest the net principal of all monetary contributions and donations and to use only the earning in its support of the Mackinac Race each year.
Now, more than ever, we need your support to serve as a guarantee for the future of the Mackinac Race. Please think of us now or in your future estate plans. Every single contribution of any amount is always truly appreciated.
Your donation will help us reach our goal of $1,000,000
How can I support the Foundation and pledge support to the Mackinac Race?

The Society of Grand Rams was founded to honor those distinguished sailors who have completed 50 Bayview Mackinac Races. Having sailed 50 or more Mackinac Races requires more than one hundred twenty days on the water and some fourteen thousand miles of sailing. They have likely endured 100 thunderstorms and suffered through 500 or more watch changes.

As the last of the glue dried on a few of the exhibit fixtures, nearly 200 sailing afficionados filled the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle in mid-May for a sneak preview of the exhibit “Challenge these Waters: A century of sailing from Detroit to Mackinac Island. ”
The event was the Bayview Mackinac Race Foundation’s annual fundraiser.
The exhibit is on display until May 2025 at the museum, which is part of the Detroit Historical Society (DHS) The Dossin Museum, located on Belle Isle, is open throughout the year Information about visiting can be found on the Detroit Historical Museum’s website.
With photographs, quotes from sailors, artifacts and, of course, winners’ flags, the exhibit shares the story of Bayview Yacht Club’s founding in 1915, the start of the Mack Race just a decade later, and the subsequent traditions, technology, risks and rewards that are part of this annual race
“Highlights are hard to pick, ” said Joel Stone, senior curator emeritus at DHS who volunteered countless hours helping curate the exhibit and spoke at the sneak preview event. “I think visitors – whether they’ve sailed the race or not – will connect to sailing, the Great Lakes and the challenge of the race through the displays. ”
Stone, a sailor himself, met throughout the past year with Bayview’s History Committee, digging through the reorganized archives and digitized files to find photos and race programs, for example, that now fill the walls of thegallery. He also included artifacts that
were already in the DHS collection, such as the compass from Wrinkle, one of the first Bayview boats.
Bayview members and other sailors shared race memorabilia and other related pieces that became part of the exhibit. A few half hulls are missing from the Clubhouse to be part of the exhibit, and the trophy and logbook from the 1924 Newport Bermuda Race are there as well.
If you don’t know the story, a team from Bayview traveled to the East Coast to compete in the famed race Aboard the schooner the “Lloyd W Berry, ” they won their class and the Fisherman Cup. The Detroit Free Press reported that it was the first time a group of freshwater sailors had won a race on the ocean. Bayview pride was born along with a tradition of offshore racing – including the first Port Huron to Mackinac Race the next year.
Moving into the present day at the exhibit, you can also see a partial list of Bayview’s national, North American, world and America’s Cup champions on the museum wall – more than 100 of them from recent decades, listed from Bill Alcott to Com. William Zemmin.
The Tomahawk sinking – and rescue by Old Bear – also merited its own case, complete with the Tomahawk’s horseshoe that washed up weeks later and made its way back to the Lowry family
The Detroit Historical Society and Bayview Yacht Club are planning other events throughout the year the exhibit will be up.

On the one-tonner Notre Dame, with the great Mike “Griz” Thompson, when he brought us right into a fog-shrouded Cove Island buoy using only an RDF radio, a compass, and a prayer. Winning the Bayview race on my NA40 Mandalay with my sons, Adam & Nathan.
The beauty of a full moon glinting off the water with Brien Baker on Dynamis, and the too-exciting midnight jibe with the boom pointing straight up at that moon. The overall win in 2022 with Chuck Stormes and a crew of Bayview all-stars on DeTour and, with my brother Eric, the spectacular lightning show and howling wind of the Chicago race that same year with Charlie Hess on Funtech. So many other great people who shared their expertise and wisdom with me over the years. Far too many to name them all, but a partial list reads like a who’s who of the greatest Mackinac sailors: Doug & Maggie Wake, Henry Burkhard, Fred Somes, Al Declercq, Russ Nutter, TK Lowry, Tim Woodhouse and, my constant companion through all challenges, my brother, Eric.
So many great people, so many great memories and, hopefully, more to come if, to quote the Griz: “God willin’ and the creek don’t rise!”
The work to initiate a Mackinac Island race by the Bayview Yacht Club followed the success of a Bayview team in the 1924 Newport Bermuda race, taking first in class on the schooner “Lloyd W. Berry. ” Within the November 4, 1924, Bayview Yacht Club Board of Gover-
TIM & CATHY McGUIRE
ABOUT OUR CREW:
This is Tim's 24th Mack, and Cathy's 8th Mack, but her 1st on ELEVATION! Our crew is an incredible group of sailors, including Rob Fleming (an OLD GOAT this year!), Sami Fleming (his daughter, her 2nd year), Katie Schlutz (18 Macks), our Afterguard for all six Macks - Brian Smith (31 Macks), Steve Tepel (30+ Macks), Carl Eaton (Evolution Sails), and from South Carolina doing his first Bayview Mack is Teddy Berman
FAVORITE BAYVIEW MACKINAC RACE MEMORY:
Our favorite memory is our first time on stage taking 1st Place in Class D, as well as the Corinthian Trophy in 2021 Winning this race with friends and family including Tim's brother Damian McGuire was as good as it gets This was Tim's 21st Mackinac, and after 20 attempts on 9 different boats he had never received a Mackinac flag until we won with ELEVATION!
BEST BAYVIEW MACKINAC RACE
ADVICE:
Take friends and family, practice seamanship first, and remember: We do this to have fun, enjoy yourselves!
39TH BAYVIEW MACKINAC RACE PAUL VANTOL & BRUCE VANDEVUSSE
Eliminator is a C&C35 Mk II which has raced 38 consecutive Port Huron to Mackinac races with a crew that has historically and principally been made up of owners Bruce VandeVusse and Paul VanTol and each of their respective two sons and close family friends. Eliminator has 3 division overalls and has class wins in 20 out of the 38 races it has participated in
FAVORITE BAYVIEW MACKINAC RACE MEMORY:
Our favorite memory from all of the races was an early race on the Cove Island Course, sailing downwind in fog and a heavy breeze, attempting to find the Cove Island light with visibility limited to around 200' We hit the mark ahead of anyone in our class, many of whom spent extra time looking for the mark, and we went on to win our class and take 3rd overall in the race
BEST BAYVIEW MACKINAC RACE
ADVICE:
Enjoy the glory and joy of the Mack as well as your sailing friends, because 38 years passes you by faster than you will ever believe!

BEST BAYVIEW MACKINAC RACE ADVICE:
Prepare for the race: boat, rig, crew and sails Gather as much Information as you can both before and during the race. Make a plan but be ready to modify it as the weather changes Make sure your crew is the best you can assemble You want crew that are reliable, skilled, and positive people who have been part of your crew You want the type of person that can recognize a problem developing and who will jump in to correct it without being told. Keep your head in the game and do not ever give up!
Co-written - except where it’s not - by Your Emcees That Night Adam Hollerbach, Todd Jones and Com. Sandi Svoboda
Old race posters, programs and results sheets. Hats REALLY OLD foul weather gear Backstay flags. A hiking bench. Aerial photos. A horn. Marked up charts – pre-GPS era The Great Whisper battle flag. And a 50-year-old life raft. More about that later…
On a rainy Friday in late January, some 60plus BYC Members showed up for the curiously titled event.
“What, exactly, is this event?” was a question we were asked more than twice in the run up to the night. And quite frankly, we didn’t quite know what the event was going to be either
Our goals were simple: have fun; see what Mackinac memorabilia our Members would share; tell some stories about the artifacts and the race; and did we mention have fun?
Oh, also to hope that Antiques Roadshow, the ACTUAL PBS program we were ripping off, wasn’t grumpy if they found out about our copycat event.
Jones: I’m sure we ran this past an attorney. Hollerbach: Given what happened, I’m sure we did not.
Sandi: Ignore them. The REAL purpose of the night was to be on the lookout for pieces that we can use in the “Challenge these Waters: A century of sailing from Detroit to Mackinac Island” exhibit that opens in May at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle
Luckily Joel Stone joined our lineup that night. He’s the retired senior curator at the Detroit Historical Society and a service member at Bayview. He’s curating the exhibit at the museum and offering guidance to our historical committee as they work on scanning, cataloging, and displaying the Club’s treasures.
We needed him to tell us what was priceless, what was junk and what should go in our museum exhibit, no matter which of the first two categories it fell in
So. What happened and what did we learn?
1. We have history. Oh gosh, do we have history at Bayview.
From the hand-held horn that has done an untold number of races, to charts that marked progress up the course in a pre-GPS era, to smelly foul weather gear dug out of lockers, to race programs that survived decades. Our sailors have collected the history of sailing in Detroit and the Mack race in ways you just can’t appreciate unless you hold it in your hand.
But it doesn’t always translate outside of our sailing circles. Joel was darn near harsh when someone asked him how much a collection of flags or hats or something else on the table that night was worth.
“To you, they’re priceless. To me, they’re worthless, ” he said, speaking as a museum administrator.
Ouch. But Joel also reminded us that the story of Bayview should be told far and wide – how this Club tucked away on the Detroit River has sailed for more than a century, sending sailors to the sport’s highest level, AND up the lake every year in the traditional Mack race.
We agree Everyone should hear that
2. We don’t livestream BYC events for good reasons.
We do appreciate that sometimes not all of us can get to Bayview for events, and streaming CAN offer an option to reach more
Welcome to Bayview Yacht Club, one of the most storied and historic sailing clubs in the nation. As we look forward to our 100th Anniversary of the Mackinac Race in 2024 we are reminded of our long history as a sailing club and the members that have brought us to this point. Bayview continues to develop many of the nation’s top sailors and has members competing in regattas around the world
In 2021 BYC completed a state-of-the-art renovation of our clubhouse adding an additional 3,000 square feet of space and taking full advantage of our waterfront location. Members enjoy waterfront dining featuring locally sourced ingredients, a second-floor bar with balcony offering the best views of the river, and world class banquets ranging from corporate meetings to 150 person weddings. Members continue to gather at our fully restored bar top located in the world-famous “Bayview Bar” – home of the Hummer!

A Great Lakes Tall Ship brings education on deck
Porter’s long-term vision is a full-time Detroit tall ship, and Sitkins agrees that a vessel like that in Detroit could inspire more future sailors and Great Lakes advocates.
“The schooner is a memorable and unique experience some of these students never have had before and may never have again But it really sets the stage for them to be open to the learning that occurs, ” he said “In essence, the reason we exist is protecting the Great Lakes through education ”
The Inland Seas ship plans to be docked at Bayview Yacht Club at the end of July and in September. Student groups join the boat downtown for two-hour educational tours.
